West Side hip-hop collective Pivot Gang (AKA Saba, Joseph Chilliams, MFnMelo, Frsh Waters and Dae Dae) stopped by Lollapalooza on August 2 to present young artists on the T.I.P. Fest pop-up stage, hosted by John Walt Foundation. The four featured artists — Nae Chic, Jonathan, Queen and Zia Jenaye — were awarded the opportunity during the nonprofit's annual T.I.P. (Teens in the Park) Fest, a city-wide showcase of local artists, musicians and poets between the ages of 14 and 24. Pivot Gang met with Vocalo's Nudia Hernandez shortly after the pop-up set to discuss the importance of providing opportunities for young Chicago artists and musicians. They also delved into writing songs inspired by ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender' and new music in the works — some of which they plan to play at Vocalo's Summer Finale in Millennium Park next month. Pivot Gang will be performing for FREE at Vocalo's Summer Finale at Millenium Park on Friday, Sept. 20. Other performers include Marquis Hill, KAINA and DJ Lady D. RSVP not required. This segment was edited and produced by Morgan Ciocca, with production support from Abigail Harrison and WBEZ's Mendy Kong. Keep up with Pivot Gang on Instagram @pivotgang.
The greenspace is a point of pride for many Chicagoans, and hosts many popular events throughout the year. But people were conflicted about it early on, especially about the unique art it holds. Reset digs into the archives, and hears from Loyola professor Timothy Gilfoyle to learn more about the history of the city's famous park. Today on the show we heard from a woman who is disgusted over she witnessed "scummy scanger b*these" (her words, not ours) doing in the Millenium Park in Blanch!!We asked if she was right to be so angry and horrified... and we were shocked by some of the callers we got!!
40 000 participants venus des quatre coins du monde. 50 conférences. 4 jours. It's FRIENDS AND RIVALS EPISOE 114 and we would like to welcome Connor Bedard to The Windy City! Please watch out for gunfire on the South Side. In March, enjoy the green river. Head over to Millenium Park to see the giant chrome bike helmet, and have a hot dog at an afternoon game over at Wrigley Field. Bedard is guaranteed to be the top athlete to play in the city since Al Bundy scored 4 touchdowns in a single game. So grab a Deep Dish and watch the shittiest team in the NFL west of the Meadowlands! BEDARD IS A BLACKHAWK! Also catch up on the Devils as they follow their standard plan to get blown out so fucking hard in the first two games that you forget the other team still needs to win two more, and then the Devils change goalies and climb right back to win it. Some say you can't sustain this approach, but, actually all you need to do is win 4 out of 7 and it doesn't matter how they do it. Like, I can have three bombs in a row at the end of the show when I say something witty, but I can totally come back and ace it on the next four episodes of FRIENDS AND RIVALS!

We all love nature but sometimes we don't consider just how much we are damaging it through our food and economic systems. In this programme Maura Brennan who runs the Acorn Project in Kilkenny is trying to repair this contradiction by running workshops that engage communities to care for and grow trees in their locality.Through funding from the Woodland Support Project, the Acorn Project has collaborated with Irish Seed Savers who are running workshops to train community seed savers in how to extract seeds and get them to germinate; the seeds having been already collected in their locality during the autumn. These seeds will then be planted in tree nurseries - wooden boxes - in parks or green areas, until the saplings grow to about two years old when they will then be planted out into areas designated by the community. Jeremy Turkington is Orchard Manager at Seedsavers who takes the groups through the processes in stratifying the seeds.Monica meets Maura in the Millenium Park, Freshford where an Acorn Box containing young saplings are growing in beautiful leaf mould compost. Using leaf mould to grow trees makes complete sense to workshop facilitator Donal O'Leary who runs Waste Down. Waste Down provides training in composting and they also sell compost too. He came to Durrow last autumn to train the tidy towns committee on how to compost leaf mould in their locality. It's always best to leave the leaves on the ground for wildlife but, if you're removing leaves from drains or to make car-parking space, then putting them in a heap afterwards to compost in a great way of getting the best use out of them. The Acorn Project runs forest school for children to get them out in the woods playing and learning about trees and the uses of trees. This according to Maura, will benefit them by cultivating a deeper connection to nature as they grow up into adults. An exciting new project which has just begun is called Waking the Seeds and involves 20 women who are exploring their connections to the woods through art. The workshop is a co-facilitation between Maura and Kilkenny based artist Rachel Burke.Restoring our forests acorn by acorn is the motto for Maura who believes that little things can achieve a lot.

While this natural eclecticism has become a hallmark of Haque's music, it was repeated visits to Von Freeman's Chicago jam sessions that gave Haque a grounding in the Chicago blues and jazz traditions. The 1981 recipient of North Texas State University's Jazz Guitar Scholarship, Haque spent a year studying with renowned jazz guitarist and pedagogue Jack Peterson. Fareed's growing interest in the classical guitar led him to transfer to Northwestern University, where he completed his studies in classical guitar under David Buch, John Holmquist, and Anne Waller.Soon after his transfer to NU, Haque came to the attention of multi-instrumentalist Howard Levy and joined his latin-fusion group Chevere. Thru Levy, Haque was introduced to Paquito D'Rivera and began a long and fruitful relationship with the Cuban NEA Jazz Master. Numerous world tours and recordings including Manhattan Burn, Celebration, Havana Cafe, Tico Tico, Live at the MCG were to follow. Especially notable is the classic and award winning Reunion featuring Haque along with Arturo Sandoval, Danilo Perez, Giovanni Hidalgo, Mark Walker, and David Fink.Thru D'Rivera, Haque was brought to the attention of Sting, who had just begun his record label Pangaea. Sting invited Haque to join the label and he released 2 critically acclaimed recordings, Voices Rising and Manresa. Haque toured briefly with Sting, including notable appearances at The Montreux Jazz Festival, as well as NBC's Michelob Presents Sunday Night with David Sanborn, but his own career demands led Haque in other directions.Haque has been featured on WTTW's ArtBeat and Chicago Tonight, Ben Sidran's New Visions, Michelob Presents Sunday Night with David Sanborn on NBC, his own Lonesome Pines special for PBS, and on BET cable jazz channel. Fareed has twice been selected as Talent Deserving Wider Recognition in Downbeat Magazine. In 1989, Haque also joined the faculty at Northern Illinois University as professor of jazz and classical guitar. He continues to teach at NIU to this day. After a short stint at Warner Bros. recording Majestad (unreleased and featuring John Patitucci, Michael Landau, Russel Ferrante, Grazinha, Lenny Castro, and Carlos Vega!), Bruce Lundvall signed Haque to the legendary Bluenote Records. While at Bluenote, Haque recorded three albums as a leader: Sacred Addiction, Opaque, and Déjà vu. Haque toured and recorded extensively with other artists, including tours and 3 CDs with Javon Jackson: A Look within, For One Who Knows, and Good People. In addition, sideman credits include tours and recordings with Joe Henderson, Herbie Mann, Bob James, Richie Cole, Joey Calderazzo, Kahil El Zabar and the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, and numerous Bluenote recordings for producer/arranger Bob Belden alongside Cassandra Wilson, Dianne Reeves, Joe Lovano, Paul Motian, and many others. Numerous classical recitals, as well as appearances with the Vermeer Quartet and many symphonies across the US and abroad, added to an incredible diversity of performances during this period.Thru Belden, Haque was invited to join forces with Joe Zawinul as part of his Zawinul Syndicate. The group proved to be one of Joe's best and most eclectic. Included were percussionist and vocalist Arto Tuncboyacian, drummer Paco Sery, bassist Mathew Garrison, along with Haque on Guitar and Electric Guitar. A year of extensive touring brought Haque closer to his Jazz/Rock roots. In 2001, Haque's interest in jam bands and the jam scene led him to co-found the jam super-group Garaj Mahal featuring Kai Eckhardt, Eric Levy, and Alan Hertz. This began 10 years of extensive touring across the US, performing in excess of 200 shows per year. Haque also joined George Brooks' group Summit, featuring Zakir Hussain and Steve Smith. Haque was voted ‘Most Valuable Player' at the 2002 High Sierra Music Festival. Haque and Garaj Mahal released 3 Live CDs as well as 5 studio CDs: Mondo Garaj, Blueberry Cave, w00t, More Mr. Nice Guy, and Discovery, which featured Haque's debut of the Moog Guitar. In 2004, Fareed premiered his Lahara Double Concerto for Sitar/Guitar and Tabla with The Chicago Sinfonietta at Symphony Center in Chicago, under the baton of maestro Paul Freeman, featuring tabla virtuoso Ustad Zakir Hussain, to whom the work is dedicated. In 2006, Fareed was commissioned to compose a classical guitar concerto for the Fulcrum Point Ensemble. His Gamelan Concertowas premiered in May of '06 at The Harris theatre in Millenium Park.In 2007, Garaj Mahal won an Independent Music Award. In 2009 Haque was voted ‘Best World Guitarist' by Guitar Player Magazine's Readers' poll. His acclaimed 2009 release Flat Planetwas twice #1 on the World Jazz Radio charts. After 10 years of over 2000 dates with Garaj Mahal, Haque's interest in electronic music and the Moog Guitar spurred him to leave Garaj Mahal and form Fareed Haque's MathGames, featuring bassist Alex Austin and drummer Greg Fundis.Notable events during this time include Haque performing and assistant directing the first Jazz Festival en la Patagonia in Frutillar, Chile under his mentor and friend Paquito D'Rivera, and appearances with his own groups at Java Jazz, The Chicago Jazz Festival, The Twents Guitar Festival, The Indy Jazz Fest, Coleman Hawkins Jazz Fest, Jazz in June, The Lafayette and South Bend Jazz Festivals, Sophia Jazz Fest, Bulgaria and many others around the world. Haque also performed at both the Aranjuez and Villa-Lobos guitar concertos (in one concert!) with The Chicago Philharmonic, under the baton of Lucia Matos at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall.★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
Most Friday nights during the school year, a group of Wheaton College students takes the train into downtown Chicago together. Their purpose? To share the gospel with the people they meet that night in the city. Last year, Wheaton’s Chicago Evangelism Team traveled to Millenium Park, home to one of the city’s most popular attractions: the Bean. When students began to approach people with pamphlets, a park employee told students they were forbidden from doing so. Similarly, when one student began preaching, they were told that they were breaking a Chicago ordinance. Read The Chicago Tribune’s report. This account comes from the lawsuit four students filed against the city of Chicago last week, alleging that the city’s park rules improperly restricted their freedom of speech. The rules divided up the park into 11 sections and banned the public from “the making of speeches and passing out of written communications” in all but one of the sections. That section was not the Bean, which was where the students specifically wanted to evangelize. The public’s strong reaction against evangelism comes as more and more companies are aggressively trying to sell you on their brands and products, says R. York Moore, the national evangelist for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship USA. “Now, as we see, people tend to associate proselytization with big tech companies or someone trying to sell you a credit card,” he said. “...It’s no longer unique.” Moore joined digital media producer Morgan Lee and editor in chief Mark Galli to discuss why evangelism can make us feel uncomfortable, what bad evangelism looks like, and what makes public proclamation of one’s faith beautiful and unique. This episode of Quick to Listen is brought to you in part by Fearfully and Wonderfully: The Marvel of Bearing God's Image, a newly updated and combined book by Paul Brand and Philip Yancey, from InterVarsity Press. There are very few voices out there who would question the nearly panacea like effects of adding more community greenspace. In popular media and academia, new research seems to be emerging daily documenting the significant health, developmental, biological and economic boon that investing in high-quality open space affords cities, and marquee projects like the High Line, Brooklyn Bridge Park, the Olympic Sculpture Park, and Millenium Park seem to reinforce that to be a 21st Century city and attract 21st century talent, you need to invest in open space. Yet what if that was only a part of the story? What if, to tweak Richard Florida’s recent framing, there was a New Urban Greenspace Crisis that offered a contradictory narrative of displacement that harmed some of the most vulnerable people in our communities? Are those concerns real? And if so, what do we do about them? These are just some of the difficult questions that Sarah Dooling confronts us with. And her critiques--and where she sees the greatest opportunity for advancement—challenge the owners, builders, designers, engineers and politicians who shape the built environment. Ultimately, Sarah invites us to define a new way of building—calling for a more synthetic practice that includes politics and economics—to make stronger, more resilient communities. I hope you enjoy our conversation.
