If it's only me at the end of the day who has to make that kind of lonely decision, I'm trying to reach out to the less rational parts in me and listen to them, as well.”    (35:22) “I would say the first couple of years were really tough because we're very enthusiastic about the idea, but then as we're trying to build a business, we realized it's actually a tough space. Not too many companies are able to raise money. VCs were not too enthusiastic investing in our space in the first few years...really raising money and establishing credibility and gaining traction with investors the first couple of years was tough because the space was nonexistent….And we were not sure we were going to survive it.”   (37:04) “We can always pay more and throw more parties, but I feel that there is one thing that's quite unique about Minute Media, which is we have, I feel, a very colorful, engaging and sticky culture. We have many, many, many people who have been with us for many, many years. It probably has to do with the initial passion for what we do. So I think there is something special about that, which to me is the number one reason for the very high retention rates.” (39:05) “…it's been so difficult to get to where we are right now, but it can also shift, shift and change very quickly, very rapidly, and can change tomorrow, right? If anything, it probably taught me not to take anything for granted because it looks very shiny from the outside, but there's so much work and effort and rollercoaster and ups and downs put into it.”

Submissions continue today over the Government's plan to merge TVNZ with Radio NZ. The process, like most submission processes is a scam. It's a nod to some sort of democracy, but in reality, the Government of the day pretend they are listening and carry on anyway. This Government is no better or worse than other governments. They all do it and they would be way better saving the time and money and avoiding the whole process. Occasionally you will get a half decent idea and it will lead to an amendment or adjustment that you hadn't thought of. But this is a government of ideology and no matter what you tell them, you must always remember that you are wrong, and they aren't. Willie Jackson is probably their best example of that. No one knows broadcasting like Willie Jackson, so if we could all just shut up and let him get on with it that would be awesome. The fact the entire industry has a laundry list of cogent, cohesive, and insightful points as to why his plan is madness doesn't really matter. We heard some of those last week and we will hear more today. Mark Mitchell put it nicely yesterday; it's a solution looking for a problem. The problem has been made worse in the last week by Jackson's outburst over TVNZ, who he very clearly stated was the organisation who needed to change, as opposed to RNZ, who didn't. Most people thought the opposite. Because at least TVNZ makes money, knows how to chase an audience, and as such would be more agile and open to delivering the Government's dream under the new structure. RNZ is a government department that has fallen on tough times in recent years as they watched their audience slide significantly. The reality that Jackson fails to understand, despite his years of brilliance in all aspects of the industry, is that unless you have an audience, whatever it is you want to achieve is wasted. What's the point of funding a programme if no one hears it, sees it, or reads it? What's the point of the money and time if it plays to an audience of no one or one that barely registers? How much time and money do you want to spend on stuff people don't use, want, or absorb? And how much damage do you want to do to the other players in the industry as you pump up your own little fiefdom with money that isn't yours anyway? The biggest issue with this issue is unlike Three Waters or co-governance it's not a political hot potato. They won't win or lose votes by doing it hence they'll probably get away with it. Plus, they seem desperate to get it up by next year. In its tenth year of being in business and after a string of publisher purchases — which have included The Players' Tribune and FanSided — Minute Media made its first tech-centric acquisition in 2021 with the pickup of publishing tech platform Wazimo in November. The acquisition reflects how tech is becoming a bigger component of Minute Media's overall business and how its B2B tech revenue is becoming interwoven with its advertising revenue “The B2B side of our business, it'll end up [in 2021 having accounted for] 60-ish percent of our revenue. It's a big part of that business. We're as much of a tech company as we are a publishing business,” Minute Media president Rich Routman said in the latest episode of the Digiday Podcast. The lines between Minute Media's tech and publishing businesses are even blurrier than that. That percentage of overall revenue represented by B2B actually includes advertising revenue. While Minute Media does some deals in which it licenses its technology to companies for a fee, it also structures deals to include an advertising revenue-share component, which can also result in Minute Media selling ads for its tech clients. “As we become more flexible in our business model, the B2B revenues have grown significantly on the back of being B2B deals on a rev-share basis supported by advertising or B2B revenues on a license-fee basis. But the B2B business as a whole is larger than the [owned-and-operated] brands,” Routman said.

סיון היא שותפה מנהלת בקרן קומרה קפיטל, וביחד עם שותפיה ארז שחר ובועז דינטי, הם משקיעים בשלבי הצמיחה ומנהלים כיום למעלה מ- 800 מיליון דולר. קומרה השקיעו בין היתר ב Joytunes, Augury, Appsflyer, Fiverr, Minute Media, Jfrog, Riskified. סיון גדלה בלינה משותפת בקיבוץ, היתה מנהלת מכירות במספר חברות טלקום בעולם, לאחר מכן מנהלת השקעות בEvergreen ומשם טיפסה את דרכה להיות שותפה מנהלת בקומרה.   סיון שוחחה עימי בפתיחות בשני מישורים - על היחסים בין יזמים ומשקיעים, מה כוללת מערכת היחסים הזו, איך מנהלים אותה, איך בוחרים בחירה הדדית את היזם שנכון לך כמשקיעה ואיך יזם בוחר את המשקיע הנכון לו ומה תפקידו של המשקיע בתוך הקשר. וכן - על מערכות יחסים בין משקיעים, סוגים שונים של משקיעים, וכמה חשוב להסתדר טוב עם כל מי שיושב אתך בבורד.   שוחחנו על הFOMO שמלווה את התעשייה, וכמה על כל השקעה טובה שנעשתה יש גם המון השקעות שהתפספסו, ואיך מחדדים כל פעם את החושים לבחור נכון וטוב.    כשקרן growth עושה בממוצע 4 השקעות בשנה, כל אחת של כ- 20-30 מיליון דולר מתוך סיבוב של כ- 50-70 מיליון דולר - יש חשיבות מכרעת לדיוק הבחירה בהשקעה וליצירת קשר חזק בין היזמים למשקיעים, שהוא ממש בגדר שותפות. סיון שיתפה מה חשוב לה בבחירת יזמים שיוצאים אתם לדרך במהלך בדיקות הDD - החיבור האישי, הערכיות, דרך החשיבה, והכבוד שהיזם רוכש לתהליך ולמעורבים בו. אותו הכבוד ילווה את ההשקעה לאורך הדרך - גם מצד המשקיע ליזם, כשיתמודדו עם צמתי קבלת החלטות, והמשקיע יזכור שהוא בגדר שותף אסטרטג שאינו אופרטור, ובסוף, מי שמכיר את החברה והשוק באופן המיטבי זהו המנכ"ל וצוות ההנהלה והם אלו שצריכים לקבל את ההחלטות. עוד היא הוסיפה על התפקיד של מנכ"לים ומשקיעים של חברות בצמיחה, בהנעת המשק קדימה ויצירת חברות ומקומות עבודה פה בארץ.   דיברנו על הצורך של יזמים ומשקיעים כאחד, "לא להתבלבל" מהכסף שעובר ידיים, ולשמור על ענווה לאורך שלבי הצמיחה השונים, כי אחרת, הדרך לאבד שליטה היא קצרה.  כששאלתי את סיון לגביי אי הסכמות בקבלת החלטות בין המשקיע ליזם, אז היא ענתה תשובה נפלאה שכאשר נבנה אמון חזק בין המשקיע ליזם, זה יגבור על כל חוסר ודאות בהמשך הדרך.   סיון דיברה על דינמיקות בין משקיעים - על קנאה, תחרות, פרגון, חברות, וכמה חשוב להיכנס ברגישות לשולחן מקבלי ההחלטות כשנכנסים בשלבי צמיחה, וכמה החיבור בין האנשים בבורד הוא חשוב. שוחחנו גם על הצורך של משקיעים זרים להבין שבחברות צמיחה ישראליות - לב הפיתוח הוא בישראל, אבל לב המכירות הוא בשוק היעד, ומשקיעים חייבים להכיר ב'פיצול האישיות' הזה ולהצמיח את שני ההיבטים, שכן זה לא יחזיק בלי זה. סיון שיתפה על הדרך שלה כמשקיעה אישה, וכמה ההקשבה לקול הפנימי שלנו, עצמאות כלכלית, אסרטיביות והחוסן שבנתה עם השנים, איפשרו לה לראות הזדמנויות ולשרטט את דרכה כמשקיעה.    סיון העניקה מימד מאד אנושי לתחושות שמלוות משקיעים בתהליך ההשקעה, ועד כמה גם הם חווים מפחי נפש כשיזם בוחר בהשקעה אחרת, ואיך עם השנים היא למדה לכבד את הרגישות שלה ולהסיר את השיריון. כל השקעה מוצלחת מחד, וכל השקעה שבסוף לא התקיימה מאידך - הן כר למידה עצום גם למשקיעים, כדי לבוא מנוסים, מדוייקים ומחודדים יותר לקראת ההשקעה הבאה. סיון שופכת אור נעים על המימד האנושי של משקיעים ואולי זה יעזור ליזמים לזכור שנמצאים מולם בני אדם, שהם נגישים, טועים לעיתים ושהבחירה בשותפות בין יזמים ומשקיעים היא בחירה הדדית ושותפות דרך.   לסיום, סיון סיפרה על השאיפה שלה לראות 50% יזמיות בנוף, אבל שנסתפק גם ב20% בתור התחלה, וזה יעד שלגמרי כולנו צריכים לשאוף אליו.

In the spirit of Mental Floss’s 20th anniversary, let me give you a few pieces of trivia about the magazine. It made a cameo in two episodes of Friends and an episode of Netflix’s The OA. It started as a print magazine but discontinued its print edition in 2016. In addition to its web content, it produces several popular video series on YouTube. And in 2018, it was acquired by Minute Media, a conglomerate that mostly consists of sports media sites. Suffice it to say, the Mental Floss of 2020 looks a lot different than when it was a magazine published out of the dorm room of two Duke University students. I recently sat down with its editor in chief Erin McCarthy to talk about its post-print strategy and why a sports media company was interested in a publisher that specializes in history trivia.
