Fred Kiekhaefer, former president of Mercury Racing and son of Mercury Marine founder Carl Kiekhaefer, shares stories of his journey in the marine industry. He now owns K.Lab Design Works, a design and consulting firm, and discusses his latest project: a surfacing drive with a cockpit-controlled variable-pitch propeller. The drive, known as Project Dolphin, was designed for performance diesels in the recreational and military markets. Kiekhaefer received a patent for the drive in 2022 but canceled the project due to low demand for diesel-powered boats. After his father's death in 1983, Kiekhaefer took over the family business, Kiekhaefer Aeromarine Motors, which was famous for its successful racing engines. He decided to shift the business from engine building to performance products, drive systems, and propellers. He also developed products such as Zero Effort Controls and K-Plane trim tabs, which are still industry standards today. In 1988, Aeromarine launched their Sterndrive by Kiekhaefer, a drive that could handle extreme horsepower. Kiekhaefer recounts how the drive dominated offshore racing for years. In 1990, Mercury Marine bought Aeromarine and named Kiekhaefer president of Mercury Performance. The Aeromarine drive was rebranded as the Mercury Number Six drive. Mercury Performance later became Mercury Racing, where Kiekhaefer led the division to great success. He oversaw the development of the QC4V engine, a 9.0-liter quad-cam, four-valve engine that is arguably the best performance marine engine ever. Kiekhaefer retired from Mercury in 2012 and lives in Colorado, where he enjoys his exotic car and does work for various charity organizations including AeroAngel and the Morgan Adams Foundation. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/521 Presented By: Angler's Coffee, Smitty's Fly Box, Yellowstone Teton Territory In today's episode, owner of Fly Fishers Shop and Scientific Angler Ambassador Pat Ehlers takes us to fly fishing largemouth bass. Pat's journey into the realm of fly fishing is a tale that began with childhood wonder and evolved into a lifelong passion. With a boatload of expertise and a trusty VEXUS, he takes us on a bass-fishing adventure that's as thrilling as it is educational. Plus, he introduces us to his custom-crafted patterns like the Vampire Leech and Grim Reaper. Don't miss out on this episode packed with bass-catching wisdom from a true master of the craft! Episode Chapters with Pat Ehlers on Fly Fishing Largemouth Bass 02:10 - Pat's journey into fly fishing began as a young kid watching the first American Sportsman show on ABC with Curt Gowdy and Jack Dennis. He later developed a special mentorship with Jack Dennis and opportunities to share his knowledge at national fly fishing shows. 04:00 - Pat started the Fly Fishers Fly Shop in 1988. 08:22 - We talked about the evolution of fishing and fishing equipment over the years. Pat's commitment to finding high-end gear to better serve his customers eventually led him to explore saltwater fishing. 09:20 - Pat's introduction to Rick Murphy came through a connection with Flip Pallot. This meeting proved instrumental in expanding his knowledge of saltwater fishing. Today, Rick Murphy is the host of Sportsman's Adventures. 15:07 - Pat provides a comprehensive overview of the diverse fishing opportunities in their area. The region also boasts some of the best bass lakes within a 20-minute drive. Pat is well-equipped for these expeditions, thanks to his partnership with VEXUS Boats and Mercury Marine's Pro team. Finding Fish 19:17 - When it comes to targeting largemouth bass, having access to a boat is crucial, as the fish tend to be in deeper waters. Pat owns a 21-foot VEXUS boat, which he finds to be the perfect fit for pursuing largemouth bass in their part of the world. 22:08 - Pat uses reliable electronics for locating fish, like Minn Kota Humminbird. However, he acknowledges that not everyone may have access to such high-tech equipment, and a good lake map can be incredibly useful in finding fish. 24:49 - Pat mentions his collaboration with Scientific Anglers to develop specialized lines, including the Sonar Titan Sink Tip Mini, a five-foot mini sink tip that has proven popular among anglers. 34:00 - Pat says his Vampire Leech is a good pattern to use when dealing with cold water conditions. Pat also mentions the Grim Reaper pattern, inspired by the swim jigs. 45:00 - Pat says it's an excellent time for fly fishing in early September, with the water temperatures still warm and the bass active. 48:00 - Pat also shares an interesting technique involving the popper dropper. 55:00 - Pat describes two of his crayfish fly patterns, the Crazi Craw and the Long Strip Crayfish. 56:00 - Pat emphasizes that the choice of rod size depends on the type of flies being used and the size of the fish one anticipates encountering. 1:01:24 - Pat shares a casting technique he developed, resembling an underhand cast, which allows for accurate placement of the fly even in challenging locations. There’s no denying that the sterndrive no longer holds the place in the recreational boating industry it once did. However, there are plenty of manufacturers, dealers and customers who still see value in the sterndrive market, and that’s why Ilmor, Mercury Marine and Volvo Penta continue to invest, iterate and improve their sterndrive offerings. In this Boating Industry Insider episode, content director and editor-in-chief David Gee speaks about sterndrives with Mike Lindberg, Chief Operating Officer of Ilmor Marine, who oversees engineering, sales and service for the company. Among other things they talk about how the COVID sales surge re-energized the category, especially among first-time boaters, as well as sustainability, eco-friendliness, electrification, corrosion and reliability improvements and the future of the sterndrive space.

Huge week in the outboard space.
This week Mike the Mariner gives us a tour of his new vessel as he motors it to its new home. Plus a rep from Mercury Marine tells us about the new Verado V12 outboard.
Welcome back friends, to the 30th episode of festivalPass Stories podcast, sponsored by Dos Hombres. We have another famous guest this week, Emmy nominated host of “Bass 2 Billfish”, Peter Miller. There was always a connection between Peter and fishing. He learned everything about being a fisherman from his father while growing up in Tappan, New York. He can even remember thinking that he wanted a fishing tv show. But before he was given the keys to his own television program, he had to prove himself as a professional fisherman. After attending the University of Miami and receiving a marketing degree, Peter Miller validated his expert status as a fisherman with three world sailfish championships, along with over 100 prominent swordfish, sailfish, and marlin events. Now, with the victories under his belt at the top of fishing, Peter was ready to step into the spotlight as the star of his own show; fulfilling a childhood dream. NBC Sports launched “Bass 2 Billfish with Peter Miller”, and the show gained early momentum. It wasn't long before Peter became a nature celebrity, and “Bass 2 Billfish” started to get a huge following. With multiple Emmy nominations, the Discovery Channel decided to double down on the brand, and started “Uncharted Waters with Peter Miller”. And once again, Peter has proven to be a skilled angler and a charismatic television host that the fans love to follow. One of the better perks about being a celebrity is the endorsements, and Peter Miller has his fair share if we're being honest. Some of the top names in the sport like Bass Pro Shops, Invincible Boats, and Mercury Marine have sponsored Peter, and have built long-term relationships. Other big-name brands like Yeti Coolers, Citizen Watch, and Salt Life have also jumped into the Peter Miller business. Peter and his platforms on social media and television have millions of followers and viewers, allowing the partnerships between companies to flourish throughout his career. Not only is Peter Miller an exceptional fisherman, and a powerful brand ambassador, he is also a giving philanthropist and thoughtful environmentalist. Learn more about the charities and organizations that Peter has worked with in this milestone episode of festivalPass Stories. “My dad took me on a charter boat…and I caught a hammerhead shark when I was like 10. That was it, that's when it really kicked in. I though I was going to have a fishing tv show one day.” - Peter Miller Catch the interview on Festival Pass Stories! https://festivalpass.com/stories Resources: “Uncharted Waters” Website- https://www.unchartedwaterstv.com “Bass 2 Billfish” Website- http://www.bass2billfish.com Peter Miller's YouTube- https://www.youtube.com/user/PeterMillerFishing Peter Miller's Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/petermillerfishing/ Connect with Festival Pass! In this episode of Inside Jobs, we meet Gary Lancina (https://www.linkedin.com/in/glancina/) of engine manufacturer and extemporized lifestyle brand, Mercury Marine. Though Gary is multilingual, he believes that success in marketing requires one to be fluent in the language and practice of assorted functions while being skilled in establishing and nurturing relationships. Gary waxes on about working remotely, managing proficiently and fostering team touchpoints through COVID-19. He also reveals how his membership with IHAF has informed his organizational strategy and approach at Mercury Marine. (Thanks for the shout-out, Gary!) —— This podcast is supported by the In-House Agency Forum (www.ihaforum.org) and hosted by Robert Berkeley (www.linkedin.com/in/rberkeley/) from Express KCS (www.expresskcs.com).
This week, Derek and Jason discuss every generation of the Chevrolet Corvette while ogling beautiful sculpts made by Amalgam Collection. Derek explains that the C1 Corvette, in all of its various bodies, was perhaps better to look at than to drive, with a solid rear axle and (in early versions) a truckish straight-six engine. Jason hasn’t driven one, but feels like the Corvette recipe wasn’t fully baked until the C2 Corvette, which has perhaps the best-feeling manual-transmission shifter in history. The C3 has amazing door handles and voluptuous Ferrari-esque fenders; the C4 was 1980s angularly stunning, and introduced the ZR-1, the Corvette From Hell, with its 4-cam, Lotus-designed, Mercury Marine-built 32-valve V-8. The C5 resurrected the Z06 option code from the 1960s, and the C6 was genuinely great to drive at the limit. Especially in outrageous ZR1 form, which used a supercharged V8 whose scream was only matched by those of the passenger. It all came together with the C7, the first Corvette to be competitive on a world stage in all ways, including its interior. Still not a match for the more-expensive European stuff, it was a pleasure to drive in its distinctly American way: gruff, rough, heavy-handed and very, very fun.The C8’s departure goes way deeper than its switch to a mid-engine layout. All of its controls are light and delicate, and its dual-clutch automatic transmission so smooth and deliberate that it feels synthetic. Just like the sound of its small-block engine, which is now artificiially piped through the stereo speakers. Jason insists the Chevy Small Block is the best-sounding V-8 in the world and Derek doesn’t seem to disagree. But the C8’s understeer is enough to make him think twice before recommending it, even though we know forthcoming Corvette C8 hybrids will have torque-vectoring electric all-wheel-drive. And last but not least, the boys discuss model cars: is it better to have literal models that match the real-world thing, or artistic interpretations? One works better in a garage or man-cave, the other is perhaps more appropriate on a coffee table. At least in houses where a significant other’s non-automotive taste needs to be considered. This episode of The Carmudgeon Show was Supported by Amalgam Collection. Amazon, Google, Facebook….Brunswick. What do all these companies have in common you might ask? All will be exhibiting at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. While you don’t often see marine brands lumped in with these technology titans, Brunswick has made innovation a key focus as technology becomes a bigger and bigger part of boating. From launching an innovation lab in partnership with the University of Illinois, to leading the way in connected boating with Nautic-On, Brunswick has recognized that in order to continue growing boating participation, technology must play an important role. Lee Gordon has been able to combine his passion for the boating lifestyle with his skills as a communicator and storyteller honed from years as a journalist to take on the role of Director of Marine Public Relations and Communications for Brunswick Corporation. Lee Manages global public relations, communications and media activities to support all marine brands under the Brunswick portfolio including Mercury Marine, Brunswick's boat group and Business Acceleration division. Lee is in charge of communications for, it is safe to say, one of the largest marine companies in the world. Lee had a 15 year career as an Emmy nominated TV news/sports anchor for CBS and FOX, winning 25 Associated Press awards while covering some of the world's biggest events such as Hurricane Katrina, 9/11 and various Super Bowls. All the while, he took every opportunity he could to get out on boats after having great boating experiences growing up in Chicago. I recently had an opportunity to meet Lee, and to see him present, at our franchise conference as Brunswick purchased Freedom Boat Club this year, and after seeing him present I knew I had to have him on the show. He did not disappoint, as we talked about what got him into boating initially and the positive impact it has had on his life, fun stories from the boating industry life, some of the key Brunswick initiatives including presenting at the Consumer Electronics show, and more!

About Gary Lancina Gary Lancina is no stranger to marketing. Prior to joining Mercury Marine in 2016, Gary worked for SC Johnson’s marketing department. Gary promoted personal care brands using a strategy known as influencer marketing. Influencer marketing involves a forming a relationship with an influential person to strengthen a brand’s identity on social media or in-person. Gary has established a wealth of these relationships, from connections in the automotive field to minor league hockey teams and the NFL. Gary currently serves as senior director of Global Brand and Influencer Marketing Strategy at Mercury Marine. Authentic Agendas Gary says that influencer marketing is all about creating productive, mutually beneficial relationships with potential customers. Utilizing well-vetted influencers within an industry has proven to be an ethical and successful way to increase awareness and product sales. Finding appropriate influencers are both an art and a science. Gary explains that when scouring social media for new relationships, individuals with a big following aren’t always the most sought-after trait. While finding someone who emits a trustworthy, authentic perspective is crucial, you also have to carefully look at their audience’s characteristics. Having an overly bloated or broad follower base can lead to weaker engagements or an inappropriate demographic altogether. Connecting with Influencers When Gary first began utilizing influencer marketing, he created relationships through the use of agencies who helped broker introductions. The influencers many of these agencies brought in weren’t always in tune with the demographics Mercury Marine was looking for. Gary says in marine sporting, history or legacy in an activity or industry is the key to reaching the audience you are catering to. The smaller population of advocates and enthusiasts with marine interests isn’t as cutthroat as other fields, making it feasible to introduce relationships and opportunities to specific people without the use of an agency. Gary says that once a strong relationship is formed with an influencer, other leads follow in the form of referrals. Local Influencers Mercury Marine’s reputation and legacy helps reach everyday people who fit the profile of the company’s influencers. Whether it be fishing guide services or pro fisherman, most enthusiasts are familiar with the Mercury brand. Creating relationships with these earnest, local aficionados can be tremendously successful in stimulating awareness, loyalty and purchases in many regions. The person-to-person contact initiated by on-the-ground advocacy is just as important as positioning a brand alongside a popular online influencer. Maintaining Relationships The nature of influencer marketing requires establishing and maintaining relationships. Gary says keeping open and clear channels of communication is crucial. Hearing the perspective of an influencer and keeping an open dialogue about the relationship also helps prolong and strengthen a relationship. Gary says the longevity of relationships is extremely important, and at Mercury Marine some of these connections have lasted for decades. Success Metrics Social platforms allow for content-creators to access a bounty of valuable statistics and data. Analytics like click-throughs, views, screen-time, sources of traffic, activation methods and location data help determine the effectiveness of the relationship. Tools like Crimson Hexagon also give detailed insights into demographics and audiences. Location analytics allow a detailed look into how word-of-mouth and social posting alone can generate buzz in a region. In all cases, building trust and evoking feelings for your brand without diluting the integrity of your brand is certainly considered a measurement for success. I was able to catch up with Reagan Haynes, Senior reporter and social media manager for Soundings Trade Only, between her travel for stories. Reagan has been writing in-depth business analysis and news for the boating industry, specializing in banking and finance regarding the marine industry, as well as EPA and environmental standards in boating, for over 15 years. One of my favorite features each issue is Reagan’s Q&A with industry leaders. Reagan’s reporting has taken her across the country, and around the globe. Recent assignments include hurricane coverage in the Keys, political reporting in Alaska, boat shows in places like Newport, RI and more! The boating industry continues to keep Reagan interested with a vast array of topics she has had the fortune of covering over the last decade-plus. In that time, she has come to not only feel personally attached to the experience of boating with her family, she has also become connected with boats themselves, people who love them, as well as those who make their living building them, selling them, and all things related to them. Her stories have earned numerous awards over the years including the AP’s Best Business story of 2003 (in the region and circulation) with the Frederick News-Post, numerous Apex business story awards as a freelancer at Trade Only, and four straight years of Boat Writers International Awards for stories including: 2014 for the January 2013 article, “Insurance Costs Likely to Spiral”, 2015 (for 2014) was third for "Band of Sisters", 2016 (for 2015) was for "Bracing for Life Without Boomers”, and 2017 (for 2016) was for "Cheer up: We Could Be Golf". In addition, Reagan was recently appointed to the Board of Directors of Sail America. If it is happening in the boating industry, there’s a good chance Reagan has written about it, interviewed someone who is in the middle of it, or has a plane ticket to go cover it. Enjoy! On her latest travels…..Most recently I was in the Florida Keys. I was covering the damage from Hurricane Irma. I had never really seen anything like that before, pretty hard hit. I was there the day after they opened up. I didn’t expect it to be so leveled. Before that I was in Alaska with Yamaha Marine at a fishing Senate Subcommittee session on the Magnuson-Stevens Act. I was in Newport, great show, great traffic, and probably my next show will be Miami. That’s the best thing about my job, it’s always different. On covering the Hurricanes…... I was there the day after they opened up. I didn’t expect it to be so leveled. I was pretty nervous to go down and ask people about their boats. I was worried that I was going to be talking about a thing when they were focused on basic needs being met. I was really surprised that after basic needs and helping each other out they were most concerned about their boats. The attachments that people have with their vessels, there was no other way for me to learn that in such a profound way than to talk to these people who had lost their boats. On the importance of marine insurance companies…..Those guys with the insurance companies, they listen to these stories all day every day. The man I spoke to yesterday was 50 days in the field. I had never really considered insurance companies as first responders, but when things like this happen they really are. On getting into and reconnecting with boating…..My second story for Soundings Trade Only was about the boating industry post 9/11. That struck me a lot because I had expected it to be a business story and what it turned out to be was about boating bringing people together. My dad had a little aluminum fishing boat when I was little and we always fished. I fished with my granddaddy who lived in Missouri. I was the sibling who liked to fish so we would go out on that. We still fish, but I drifted away from boats and boating. That story had an impact on me. On why she loves the boating industry…..There are such great people and I get to be on boats all the time which is awesome. It’s a career people choose because its their passion and that’s the kind of people I like to surround myself with, people who do what they love. On boating with the family…..We get out on boats any time we can. Most recently we went to New York City. Mercury Marine was holding a non-boating media event. I got our kids and husband on the water. My big kids got to try the joy stick control on a Scout. That was their favorite part of the whole trip. These are tourist destinations that draw people from all over the world and all three, hands down, their favorite part was the boat. On most essential item to bring on the boat…..The dry bag. I’ve been burned too many times. I’m always writing on the boat and always have equipment on the boat. Gotta have one of those…. On her favorite boating destinations…..It’s hard to top Alaska but it’s probably tied with Cartagena, Columbia. In both places, the people are amazing, and it’s breathtakingly gorgeous. On recent debuts that have impressed…..That Hinckley was pretty astounding. The Dasher is what they are calling it with twin Torqeedos. I thought that was pretty unique. It is so amazingly quiet, it’s just such a different experience to be under power and hearing nothing but the slap of the waves against the hull. On some of her favorite interview subjects…..Shep McKenney, the way his mind works is pretty amazing. He developed the joystick on the Hinckley picnic boat. I just like that kind of mind. Instead of saying jet powered boats don’t operate as smoothly in close quarters, he said we can design around this. And then most recently with the Seakeeper Gyro. Anybody who thinks that instead of you just accept it, they can think and design around it, is really cool. Another person I love to interview always is Jack Ellis at Info-Link. He’s a big picture industry guy. He’s a lifetime boater. He sails and is a power boater so he has all perspectives. And he just loves data. He has really good ideas and is realistic about the industry and where it is and where it’s going and what might need to change in order for it to thrive. On the attractiveness of joining the boating industry as a career…..One of the unique things about this industry that stands apart from other industries as I’ve seen them is there is a lot of room for upward mobility. You really can work your way up from any position to any position. You hear it all the time and I don’t see it changing. On the importance of reaching women boaters…..There needs to be more focus on women. The industry makes a mistake assuming a woman won’t care about power or running boats. Women could drive a lot of growth if they were spoken to in a way that would assume that they do care about doing those things. Reagan covered so much more in our conversation.
