We'll be back with new episodes in the new year; in the meantime, enjoy this throwback and poke around the archive at Resources.org for more topics you might be interested in. In this week's episode rerun, host Kristin Hayes talks with Rebecca Epanchin-Niell, a senior fellow at Resources for the Future (RFF) who coauthored a journal article with RFF scholars Alexandra Thompson and Tyler Treakle about the role of the public in detecting invasive species. Pointing to a recent incident in which a member of the public spotted an Asian giant hornet in Washington State, Epanchin-Niell describes how more than a quarter of detections of invasive species—and possibly more—stem from these citizen scientists. Recognizing the essential role of the public, policymakers can make it easier to alert authorities about the presence of unusual species. Trvl Channel hosts Ashlan and Philippe Cousteau join a special World Oceans Day conversation with Mitch Ratcliffe and Newday Impact Investing CEO Doug Heske about the rapidly declining krill population in the Southern Antarctic Ocean. These tiny crustaceans that are the keystone of a critical carbon cycle are threatened with extinction from overharvesting to make heart- and brain-healthy Omega-3 oils and for use as filler in animal feed. Just as humans once hunted whales almost to extinction, krill are being harvested extensively in the Antarctic Southern Ocean, so much so that the species is at risk. Demand for products made from krill has reduced populations by as much as 80% since the 1970s, and they could face losses of another 40% because of the impacts of climate change. Philippe and Ashlan explain how krill power the largest carbon sink on the planet -- it sequesters more CO2 than the Amazon, and share a warning for consumers: avoid krill-based products to avoid contributing to the collapse of the Antarctic food chain and ask for algae-based alternatives. EarthEcho International, the youth ocean education nonprofit Philippe founded, and Newday Impact are collaborating to launch a krill-protection-focused exchange-traded fund that will support public awareness and the development of sustainable alternatives. They encourage young people to join the movement for ocean health at https://joingensea.org/.Krill are tiny, shrimp-like crustaceans that serve as a primary food source for many marine animals, including fish, whales, seals, and penguins in the Antarctic Southern Ocean. Just as humans once hunted whales almost to extinction, krill are being harvested extensively in the Antarctic Southern Ocean, so much so that the species is at risk. Demand for products made from krill has reduced populations by as much as 80% since the 1970s, and they could face a loss of another 40% because of the impacts of climate change. The solution Ashlan and Philippe suggest is a remarkable example of a broad solution that addresses many climate-related problems. As we've heard on previous shows, algae oil is an ingredient in nutritious foods, sustainable fuels, and compostable plastics or fabrics. The introduction of land-based algae farming can support millions of prosperous farmers, especially in the global south, where climate change already makes land too arid for traditional agriculture.Discover more about krill fishing and EarthEcho International at https://www.earthecho.org/ and the Newday Impact Investing Ocean Health ETF (NYSE: AHOY) at https://newdayimpact.com/ocean-health/

Celebrity brands have taken over the cannabis industry. Everywhere you look brands are slapping celebrity endorsements on the packaging and hoping someone picks it up and tries it. Real connoisseurs should be wary, as most of these brands are more focused on marketing than on quality. I was skeptical before my interview with Ashlan and Philippe Cousteau of SeaWeed Naturals. Of course the legacy of Jacques Cousteau speaks for itself in the oceanography world, but what did they know about cannabis? As I pressed them on why and how they developed their product line, I was impressed with their knowledge and intentionality around ingredients, packaging, and formulations. It is clear they could have created any number of products in the world, but they chose cannabis. I think that speaks volumes about how this industry has evolved. https://www.seaweednaturals.com/ ==== This episode is brought to you by MJ Unpacked: May 18-20 in NYC. There is a magical age, somewhere between eight and twelve, where young people's wonder at the natural world can be galvanized into meaningful engagement with the threats and challenges that humans bring to bear on nature. It is within this window that the right book at the right time can help a young person make sense of the big feelings that come with adolescence — and with unforeseen hardships, like global pandemics. In this episode, with the help of Sara Pennypacker, author of Pax and Pax, Journey Home, Colby Sharp, literacy advocate and teacher, and Philippe Cousteau, co-author of The Endangereds series, we discuss the serious, real-life challenges that young readers face and how animal characters in books can help them identify and express their feelings of grief, loss, and trauma. EarthEcho International, the global nonprofit founded on the belief that youth have the power to change our planet, is accepting submissions for the 2021 OurEcho Challenge until April 22, 2021. The STEM competition is designed to engage young problem solvers in studying, respecting and protecting the diversity of species and ecosystems that make life on earth possible. Teams of middle school students, guided by a teacher or mentor, are challenged to address the decline in biodiversity by identifying threats to natural resources in their communities and developing innovative solutions. The competition is made possible through the support of Aramco Americas. To learn more, please visit ourechochallenge.org. “During last year’s inaugural OurEcho Challenge we were blown away by the ingenuity, passion and determination of young leaders ready, willing and able to take on the growing global decline of biodiversity,” said Philippe Cousteau, Jr., founder of EarthEcho International. “The Challenge provides students with a platform to turn their love of nature into a plan of action to support the diverse native species and habitats that exist in their own communities and to inspire others to do the same.”This spring, EarthEcho will select 10 finalist teams to compete for three project grants ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 to turn their ideas into reality. Quantum Quote:  "I am always intrigued by the resistance to change, especially with clean energy. We can get rid of coal & oil. We really can. We just need the willingness to adapt”. Do you want to take action to protect wildlife and reduce pollution?  Do you want limits put on carbon pollution, action on climate change, and a faster transition to clean energy? Mass media plays a big role in creating clean energy and environmental awareness. Keeping humankind entertained, while keeping us informed. Jason Evans is the founder of the Maui-based production company, Silvershark Media, with a strong background in storytelling. Silvershark produces national campaigns, marketing videos, and webisodes. In the television realm they've had a hand in producing content for FOX, Travel Channel, Discovery Channel, Food Network, Golf Network, TLC, HGTV, among other networks. Jason has been involved in the TV industry since 2000  is a 4x Emmy Nominee for the Best Daytime Travel Series. He is the producer for Xploration Awesome Planet (a Steve Rotfeld Productions featuring Philippe Cousteau, grandson of the legendary Jacques Cousteau) geared toward 13 to 19 year olds. In this episode, Jason talks about how our way of living affects the natural habitat and the wild animals living around us, and how every decision we have has a connection to the changes that every living creature on earth is experiencing right now. He also shares how mass media helps humankind be entertained and informed about ongoing policies from the comfort of their home. Sign up for the free 60-minute AWESome EarthKind™ Clean Energy Demonstration to discover 3 simple actions you can take to start saving money and make the world a better place – without having to learn complex technology. Announcement: The Season 6 of Awesome Planet has just started to premiere. Please support. SuperNova #1: [Our lifestyle affects wild-life] Whether it be contaminated water that is endangering populations of certain animals or whether it be development, it's all connected together.  SuperNova #2:  United Technologies is working on an Otis Elevator that uses only 10% of the electricity of current elevators. It uses the hybrid idea of regenerative braking to capture the energy of the elevator going down and uses that energy to bring the elevator back up. SuperNova #3: [Characteristic of wild-life in their natural habitat] In this case, a shark. Sharks are not mindless killers. When you do free swims, you see them in their natural habitat. Some people might have hesitation when they don't see 20 sharks rushing right up to them. Maybe they have a different perspective of sharks in the wild. It's really a conservation approach through emotion and inspiration. SuperNova #4: [Having a Younger Generation knowledgeable about the importance of clean energy]. The younger generation (that's now not so young anymore), is entering & maturing in the workforce, and coming with a heavy hand of ‘Hey, we don't have to always do things like they used to be done.'  That's going to be an important thing to see these young leaders really push the capabilities of what's possible [in using clean energy]. Worst Clean Energy Moment:  I love seafood, and working on an Earth Science show I learned about where my food is sourced from. When you look into seafood, you can certainly find areas that are wrecking reefs, wrecking habitats, wrecking ecosystems, wrecking mangroves. I became more conscious of what I was buying at restaurants and trying to make sure - as much as I could - that everything was done sustainably because I know that everything's related whether it be storm protection, whether it be ecosystem habitat, whether it be keeping our waters in a clean state by not wrecking oyster beds and filter feeders.  Ah-Ha: Paying attention to what I was purchasing, and really taking that extra step to be informed and not just blindly taking what I wanted.  Best Advice: The best advice I ever received was not to be scared of the word, no. Personal Success: I'm very organized. Organization to me is one of my traits that I am proud of, and I think absolutely contributes to workflow success and future success. Internet Resources: BBC Science; Outside Online  Book Recommendation: The Old Man and The Sea by Ernest Hemingway Magic Wand: If I could change one thing with a magic wand, I would eliminate the fossil fuel industry and instantly convert it to something better. There's so much impact on air pollution, water contamination to our drinking waters, not to mention just burning, burning, burning all these resources. That would be one wand swipe that could knock out a lot of different problems. WTF or F: Done a couple of really, really heavy cold-weather things above the Arctic Circle. To me, that was the most intriguing weather that I've experienced personally. Negative 40 negative 50 - barely no daylight at nine o'clock, or you get basically a sunset hue for two hours. And then it's dark again, which takes some adjustment getting used to. One thing that Energizes Jason today: The one thing I'm most energized about today is tomorrow. I think that we have such potential and a rolling ball of momentum. Seeing the private sector take on a lot of these challenges (clean energy), and say we're not waiting around any more - that excites me. Parting Advice: If you have the influence to help give sparks to younger generations - do so and give opportunities. I think it goes a long way. And for me that's that's one thing that I really kind of take pride in and try to focus on. Telling the stories of up and coming youth leaders that are going to be our leaders of tomorrow, and also telling the stories of people that inspire those youth leaders to get involved in the first place. So my advice is: if you can give that spark to anyone, it goes a long way. "If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea." - Antoine de Saint-Exupery One of the often taken-for-granted and overlooked aspects of climate is our oceans. And by oceans, we mean ocean. One. All "oceans" are part of the same system, and they have been absorbing the heat and CO2 that we have been so irresponsibly emitting. But how can we get people to take action on climate, sustained and long-term? Our guest, Philippe Cousteau Jr. believes it all begins when we fall in love with our oceans. Standing on the shoulders of his father, Philippe Sr. and grandfather, Jacques Cousteau, Philippe reaches even further by taking us with him to explore just how endlessly immense the sea is, how much it has loved us, and how much we love it back. Not just through the lessons he was passed down from his grandfather but through his own insatiable curiosity. Philippe has a lot on the horizon like consulting on a new project involving the Red Sea (where his grandfather did a lot of work on his Aqua Lung system - which spawned the first SCUBA system), and a new network project which he teases in this conversation, and his new baby girl with wife Ashlan Gorse. DARBY HINTON is a native of Los Angeles. He was born in Santa Monica, California. He made his acting debut at the age of 6 months old in the arms of Jayne Mansfield in the TV show “Playhouse 90”. He went on to appear in numerous features and television shows, until the day his mother dropped him off at Twentieth Century Fox, (dressed in knee high socks and a lederhosen), to audition for a role in “The Sound Of Music”. Darby got lost and wandered into the wrong line of kids, by the time his mother found him he had turned in his lederhosen for a coon skin cap, and ended up playing Fess Parker’s son “Israel Boone” on the “Daniel Boone Show” for the next six years. While in recent years it seems to be in vogue for child actors to talk about their early acting years as ones of pain and abuse, Darby looks back on his life with fun and excitement. “It gave me the opportunity to travel the world and meet some of the most interesting people in it”. In fact Darby likes to travel so much that after finishing high school in Lugano Switzerland, he took three academic around-the-world voyages aboard the S.S. Universe. He went on to study under Jacque & Philippe Cousteau and almost gave up his acting career to become a marine biologist, however, once you start a career in Jayne Mansfield arms it is hard to give up that kind of work. Besides acting gave Darby the kind of freedom that he loved to explore his other passions like flying, skydiving, and martial arts. After meeting Bruce Lee, who at the time was playing Kato on the ‘Green Hornet’ series, Darby got very interested in martial Arts. He traveled to Hong Kong to see where Bruce first studied. He even got the opportunity to study under William Chung The World’s Grand Master of Wing Chung and the man who taught Bruce. He then spent a couple of years playing “Ian Griffith”, the probation officer that turned into the Salem rapist, on “Days Of Our Lives” The most recent chapter in Darby’s life revolves around human development. After meeting and working with the master of motivation, Tony Robbins, Darby realized his life’s work as an actor had been trying to figure out why people do what they do. He eventually became a master trainer for Tony Robbins taking a number of years off doing seminars all around the US including Hawaii and even in Fiji. Darby then sought out other Masters in the world of human development to study with, like Wayne Dryer, Julia Cameron, and Jim Rohn. Darby has been a proud member of the ‘SAG/AFTRA Young Performers Committee’, an active member of ‘A Minor Consideration’ and on the Advisory Committee to ‘Looking Ahead’. All geared to helping the creative youth of today experience the best of life while helping them avoid the pitfalls that have plagued young artists of the past and present. Still, acting is what Darby loves to do. For a much more complete list of his current project check out IMDB.com and be on the look out for him in ‘Bill Tilghman and The Outlaws’ opening in February. The assumption that Philippe Cousteau, 38, had no choice but to follow in the footsteps—er, wake—of his famous, sea-exploring grandfather Jacques Cousteau is wrong. While the younger Cousteau revere’s his grandfather, it was his own experience exploring that connected him to his grandfather’s work. The senior explorer died in 1997 at the age of 87. By the time the grandson was ready to explore the world, the grandfather was resigned to the role of “elder statesman” rather than intrepid explorer. An expedition to New Guinea at age 16, with Eugenie Clark, known as the Shark Lady, convinced Philippe Cousteau that there was simply no other way to live. In this moving presentation, Philippe Cousteau delivers a rich, visual account of his inheritance of the exploration and conservation of our “water planet,” carried out in the name of his grandfather Jacques Cousteau. He weaves his storytelling with vintage footage shot by his father on the Nile, and before and after filming among the coral reefs in the Florida Keys. As was impressed upon Philippe by his grandfather, the health and diversity of the oceans are precariously entangled with the wellbeing of people on land—including the empowerment of women and girls, access to safe drinking water, and ending our dependence on fossil fuel extraction. Philippe reads a cherished letter from his grandfather to his father, which serves as an inspiration to his family and all of humanity to “seek after the vanishing shapes of a better world.” This speech was given at the 2011 Bioneers National Conference. Since 1990, Bioneers has acted as a fertile hub of social and scientific innovators with practical and visionary solutions for the world's most pressing environmental and social challenges.
