The US government has a lot of apologizing to do! For targeting civil rights leader Reverend Martin Luther King Jr and many other up-and-coming young black leaders of the civil Rights movement, under the guys of fighting communism. But we all know now that they are just blatantly racist! Their taxpayer funded black op project, #COINTELPRO HAD THE OBJECTIVE OF TARGETING AND ASSASSINATING, INFILTRATING groups, for what reason really? It's because they don't want to share power f selfish demons, who take away the best of us, to cripple the rest. FBI snipers army security officers alpha 184 and 111th that's who killed JFK at Lorraine motel! This is what your taxpayer dollars are going for, America what do you think about that??? The US government has a lot of apologizin to do! What about that military dude with his pillow???? This MLK Jr day, I'm doing research on new information surfacing recently about military officer entering the hospital where MLK was held and ordered everybody out of the room, after which he smothered MLK our hero of the Day, to death, with a pillow, that's how I heard the story, which I will be trying to confirm. Who was that dude? And WTF the FBI doing, assassinating black leadership systematically in the form of a black op operation, funded by our taxpayer dollars mind you! Called #cointelpro. I should do a whole podcast on that BS y'all really need to get me on the ballot

With an award-winning filmography that includes the epochal Civil Rights series Eyes on the Prize, 2020's MLK/FBI, and 2021's Citizen Ashe, among many others, documentarian Sam Pollard has changed the way we read history. Pollard is also an editor and producer, working with filmmakers like Spike Lee and Bill Gunn. Simply put, the guy is a legend. Which brings us to his latest film, the new two-part documentary Bill Russell: Legend, which digs deep into the life and career of one of the greatest basketball players of all time. The winner of a record 11 championships with the Boston Celtics from 1956 to 1969, including two as a player coach, Bill Russell broke many boundaries, both on the court and off. Pollard's film is a remarkably nuanced portrait of a complex figure who, as a record-breaking athlete and active participant in the Civil Rights movement, stood at the intersections of sports, celebrity, and race in America. FC co-deputy editor Clinton Krute invited Pollard on the podcast to discuss his new film with scholar Samantha N. Sheppard, whose 2020 book Sporting Blackness: Race, Embodiment, and Critical Muscle Memory on Screen is an expansive analysis of sports documentaries and representations of Blackness on screen. We discussed the intensive research process behind the film, how the genre of the sports documentary can be used to rewrite history, and the legacy and life of Russell, who passed away in July 2022.

Jeffrey Wolf's illuminating documentary BILL TRAYLOR: CHASING GHOSTS explores the life of a unique American artist, a man with a remarkable and unlikely biography. Bill Traylor was born into slavery in 1853 on a cotton plantation in rural Alabama. After the Civil War, Traylor continued to farm the land as a sharecropper until the late 1920s.Aging and alone, he moved to Montgomery and worked odd jobs in the thriving segregated black neighborhood. A decade later, in his late 80s, Traylor became homeless and started to draw and paint, both memories from plantation days and scenes of a radically changing urban culture. Having witnessed profound social and political change during a life spanning slavery, Reconstruction, Jim Crow segregation, and the Great Migration, Traylor devised his own visual language to translate an oral culture into something original, powerful, and culturally rooted. He made well over a thousand drawings and paintings between 1939-1942. This colorful, strikingly modernist work eventually led him to be recognized as one of America's greatest self-taught artists and the subject of a Smithsonian retrospective. Using historical and cultural context, BILL TRAYLOR: CHASING GHOSTS brings the spirit and mystery of Traylor's incomparable art to life. Making dramatic and surprising use of tap dance and evocative period music, the film balances archival photographs and footage, insightful perspectives from his descendents, and Traylor's striking drawings and paintings to reveal one of America's most prominent artists to a wide audience. Director Jeffrey Wolf (James Castle: Portrait of an Artist) and Producer Sam Pollard (Eyes on the Prize, MLK/FBI) join us for a conversation on the remarkable life and the unsettling times that infused the strikingly direct and unfettered work of a deeply intuitive artist. This episode is a little different, and quirky than we are normally accustomed too. Tim had the idea that we do a documentary episode. But instead of just choosing a documentary to talk about, we decided that ALL three of us would choose a documentary to watch, and then talk about. So, this episode technically has three topics within the one episode! Juan chose to speak about the documentary titled, MLK/FBI. There's a lot of very cool information about what was going on inside the FBI, during Martin Luther King's rise to popularity. There is said to be many more recordings that the FBI took of MLK, that will be released later this decade. Gabe chose to speak about the documentary, Murder Among the Mormons. This film is about a famous forger, who was apparently VERY good at forging items/documents, and created a lot of forgeries that had to do with believers in the Latter-day Saints movement.  If you're a fan of youtube "celebrities," than you might end up liking Doyle's pick. He chose to speak about the Jake Paul documentary titled, The Mind of Jake Paul. The documentary was created by another youtuber, and explores the mind of Jake Paul, as well as the psychology of youtubers, in general.  Tim went a little deeper into something that he seems passionate about, graffiti. He spoke about a graffiti documentary titled, Infamy. Graffiti follows the lives of six different, well known graffiti artists, as well as one buffer. A buffer is someone who cleans up graffiti. Take a look back onto the lives of a different form of artist.  SUBSCRIBE: Apple Podcasts | Android |  Spotify | Pandora | RSS Tell us what you think!Leave us a voicemail at 970-573-6148Send us feedback and/or MP3's to outsidethelongbox@gmail.comFollow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Youtube!Support the podcast on Patreon!Credit - Doyle Daniels, Juan Muro, Gabe Llanas, Tim Huskey

Obviously Eyes on the Prize comes up as we discuss our main film of the evening: Judas And The Black Messiah directed by Shaka King, a powerful and much-needed portrait of Black Panther Fred Hampton and a dramatised account of the BFI's infiltration of the Black Panthers and subversion of Hampton's community organising, which eventually led to his assassination.  We discuss the history and depiction of the Panthers, the concept of a "rainbow coalition", the professionalisation of community organising and the shift from class/race to identity politics.  As usual, comments and feedback welcome via Twitter @Mydylarama

At 70-years-old, filmmaker Sam Pollard has had a massive career spanning five decades. But it's arguably just getting its due in a major way and unlike never before (“The phone's been ringing off the hook,” he said). Pollard— a director, editor, and producer— is an Oscar nominee (Spike Lee's “4 Little Girls” doc, which he co-produced and edited), has been nominated for seven Emmys and has won three different times (two wins for the Spike's incredible Katrina doc, “When The Levees Broke”) and has also been honored with a Peabody Award (for Spike's second Katrina doc, (“If God Is Willing And The Creek Won't Rise.” So behind the scenes, he's known and is a giant in the world of documentaries, but thanks to the one-two punch of “MLK/FBI,” the IFC Films documentary released in January and “Black Art: In The Absence of Light,” the critically-acclaimed HBO doc about contemporary Black art in the United States that came out earlier this month, Pollard is finally getting some major name recognition. He's a veteran and an elder statesman of film and documentaries and was recently given another major honor with a lifetime achievement honor from the IDA Documentary Awards. I talked to Pollard about 'MLK/FBI,' 'Black Art,' his seminal work with Spike Lee, and a lot about his entire career. Please take a listen to the words and wisdom of filmmaker Sam Pollard. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theplaylist/message

James Comey took part in the film. He says it was a shameful chapter in the FBI's history. In the 60's, black folks had pics of King, Kennedy & Jesus.

For years Martin Luther King Jr, the leader and hero of the civil rights movement, faced constant surveillance and harassment by the US government. Helping us to learn more about this dark chapter in America's history is award-winning director, editor and producer, Sam Pollard, whose latest film MLK/FBI premieres on January 15th 2021, ahead of Martin Luther King Jr Day on January 18th. As a filmmaker with a career spanning more than three decades, Sam Pollard has won three Emmys and along with Spike Lee received an Oscar nomination for Four Little Girls (1997) . He is a teacher at the Tisch School of the Arts in New York, and a member at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. MLK/FBI is not a biopic. It is a complex and nuanced story with a clear protagonist, Dr Martin Luther King Jr, and the antagonist, J Edgar Hoover, who served as the Director of the FBI for almost four decades. Each man had his fatal flaws and each man had his own view of what America should be. "I'm someone who would do a survey film about anything and anybody. I want to be able to dig in as an anthropologist and archaeologist, to look at the pros and cons, and nuances of human beings and different institutions." – Sam Pollard Time Stamps: 02:47 - The film we are talking about today with our guest Sam Pollard. 04:00 - When MLK/FBI is being released and what the film is about. 05:40 - The FBI's surveillance of American citizens, including Martin Luther King Jr. 09:30 - How FBI turned onto MLK's private life and his extra-marital affairs to discredit him. 11:35 - What mass media were like at the time of MLK's activities. 13:00 - Who J Edgar Hoover was, his power and influence in the USA. 17:20 - Why MLK/FBI is made now and why it turns out to be so relevant to this time. 19:45 - Why 2020 felt very much like 1968. 23:00 - How recent history has never ceased to surprise us. 26:50 - What the director's responsibility is when making a film about Dr Martin Luther King Jr. 32:00 - MLK and J Edgar Hoover as the protagonist and antagonist in the film. 34:30 - Why all the participants in the film are commenting off camera. 37:00 - Why FBI tapes about MLK should be released. 40:30 - Sam Pollard's memories of US society and politics in the 1970s and 1980s. 43:18 - Where the documentary film industry is heading. 46:00 - The next project Sam is working on. Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, a podcast where we reach out to friends to talk about what we've been watching. It's as simple as that. Joining Nicolas Rapold this time are critics Amy Taubin and Michael Koresky. This time of year, our heads are usually full of brand-new movies from film festivals, which are a good way to preview fall releases as well as titles that might otherwise be hard to see. We talked about a number of films including: American Utopia, Spike Lee's movie of David Byrne's Broadway show; Sam Pollard's documentary MLK/FBI, about the FBI's relentless surveillance of Martin Luther King; Regina King's One Night in Miami, which dramatizes the meeting of four great historical figures in 1965; and a French comedy that plays out in a prison, The Big Hit, directed by Emmanuel Courcol. Finally, because we just couldn't help ourselves, we talked about Lovers Rock, actually the opening night selection of The New York Film Festival. Photo by Steve Snodgrass
