The Trombone Corner Podcast is brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass and The Brass Ark. Come watch the Los Angeles Brass Alliance (LAB-A) at 7PM on May 4th at Glendale First baptist Church for their second installation of Next Up! This free concert (generously sponsored by Bob Reeves Brass) spotlights LAB-A's annual collaboration between emerging LA-based composers and brass musicians. Learn more at: www.labrassalliance.org. Join hosts Noah and John as they interview Michael Dease, commercial trombonist from Los Angeles. About Michael: Michael Dease is one of the world's eminent trombonists, lending his versatile sound and signature improvisations to over 200 recordings and groups as diverse as Grammy winning artists David Sanborn, Christian McBride, Michel Camilo, and Alicia Keys. Born in Augusta, GA, he played the saxophone and trumpet before choosing the trombone at age 17. In 2001, Dease moved to New York City to become part of the historic first class of jazz students at The Juilliard School, earning both Bachelors and Masters degrees, and quickly established a reputation as a brilliant soloist, sideperson, and bandleader. Best Next Thing (Posi-Tone, 2022), Dease's newest release, his ninth on Posi-Tone, gathers together an assemblage of exceptional musicians to help him interactively explore the essence of the blues and reframe the abstract truths of jazz as the "Best Next Thing "for today's audience of listeners. Dease, the winner of the 69th Annual DownBeat Magazine Poll for Trombonist of the Year and multi-Grammy award winner, is also a sought-after lead, section and bass trombonist with today's leading jazz orchestras. His experiences include bands led by Christian McBride, Roy Hargrove, Nicholas Payton, Charles Tolliver, Rufus Reid, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band. However, it is on the frontline of quintets and sextets led by master musicians like The Heath Brothers, Winard Harper, Renee Rosnes, Bill Charlap, Claudio Roditi, and Lewis Nash, where Dease has revitalized the trombone's image. Not content to simply improvise, Dease arranges and composes for many different bands, constantly adjusting his tone and timbre to add just the right flavor to the music. Dease's unique blend of curiosity, hard work and optimism has helped him earn worldwide recognition, including awards from ASCAP, The International Trombone Association, Yamaha, Eastern Trombone Workshop, New York Youth Symphony, Hot House Magazine, Michigan State University, among others. Dease was profiled in Cicily Janus' book, The New Face of Jazz: An Intimate Look at Today's Living Legends (Random House). His experience in the studio has led him to produce several recording sessions for emerging artists, often composing and writing liner notes for the releases. Dease's singular talent has made him an effective and prolific teacher, resulting in invitations, master classes and residencies at University of North Texas, Scranton University, University of Iowa, Florida State College, Broward College, and many institutions abroad. He serves as Professor of Jazz Trombone at the renowned Michigan State University jazz program and has also been on faculty at Queens College - CUNY, The New School and North-eastern University. Many of Dease's current and former students are enjoying successful careers in the music world. Always an informed, but forward-thinking musician, Dease learned the craft from trombone legends Wycliffe Gordon and Joseph Alessi. His associations have run the entire spectrum of musical experience: Alicia Keys, Paul Simon, Paul Schaffer and the CBS Orchestra, Elton John, Neal Diamond, Illinois Jacquet, Slide Hampton & The World of Trombones, Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker, WDR Big Band, George Gruntz, Billy Harper, and numerous others. Dease enjoys spending every possible minute with his extraordinary wife and Professor of Percussion at MSU, Gwendolyn Dease, and their daughters Brooklyn & Charley. Michael Dease is a Yamaha Performing Artist and uses Pickett Brass and Vandoren mouthpieces exclusively. There's a new Record Store Day ritual in the jazz world - archival live releases from one of the many labels Zev Feldman has a hand in running. This year's two RSD days saw several releases on labels like Resonance, Reel to Real, and Elemental Music and the boys take a gander at one release from each of these wizards of the archive as well as pondering a brand new live release recorded (as well as let into the wild) in 2024. Recorded in Brooklyn because, well, of course it was. Emily Remler – LIVE FROM THE 4 QUEENS; Mal Waldron and Steve Lacy – THE MIGHTY WARRIORS; Charles Tolliver – LIVE AT THE CAPTAIN'S CABIN; The Fury – LIVE IN BROOKLYN.

William Linster is a Connecticut native and New York-based pianist, composer, music director, and arranger. Having been playing since the age of two and performing professionally since the age of seven, William has an extensive background in classical training, as well as in jazz and other contemporary styles. A graduate of the world-renowned New School For Jazz And Contemporary Music, William has studied and worked with some of the greatest musicians in the world, including Grammy® nominees Bobby Sanabria, Dave Douglas, Charles Tolliver, Cecil Bridgewater, and Andy Mckee, as well as Grammy® winners Bill Kirchner, Robert Sadin, and Hank Schocklee (Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame Inductee, Public Enemy). As an accompanist and session musician, he has worked with artists such as Katie Stevens (American Idol, The Bold Type), Coyle Girelli (Your Vegas, The Chevin), Ron McClure (Blood, Sweat & Tears), R&B hitmaker James "D-Train" Williams, and numerous other Broadway stars and opera singers. Upon first working with William, the late acclaimed librettist Roger O. Hirson (Tony Award®-nominee, Pippin) simply said, "He's a genius." He made his Carnegie Hall debut at age 16, and was featured on NBC Nightly News at 17 while at the Havana International Jazz Festival in Cuba. William is also a trained vocalist, in addition to having received training on violin, trumpet, clarinet, mallet percussion, concert percussion, drums and handbells. He recently served as the Music Director for the Off-Broadway production of Fringe Deaths (2019). William is currently in the process of developing four full-length musicals he wrote with late Hollywood screenwriter, Lawrence Alexander (Charlie's Angels, CHiPs, Barnaby Jones). He was recently named a 2022 Jonathan Larson Grant Finalist by American Theatre Wing. The musical centers around Quentin Roosevelt, the youngest son of Theodore Roosevelt, who embarks on a forbidden romance with Flora Payne Whitney, a wealthy heiress from a different social sphere. The Roosevelts, renowned for their political activism and their role in trust-busting (which significantly impacted the Whitney family's wealth), stand in stark contrast to the reserved Whitneys, who are determined to avoid scandal of any kind. The story follows Quentin as he navigates the pressures of familial expectations, personal ambition, and the looming shadow of war. Through a mix of historical events and artistic interpretation, the musical delves into themes of heroism, love, and the impact of war on individuals and their families. Quentin weaves together dramatic scenes, emotional soliloquies, and powerful musical numbers to create a moving portrait of a young man caught between personal desire and duty, love and loss, and the enduring question of how to make one's mark in the shadow of a powerful legacy.
Trumpeter/composer Keyon Harrold was born and raised in Ferguson, MO to a musical family. He is the son of pastors and one of 16 children. As a boy, a trumpet was placed in his hands, and the rest is history. He moved to New York to study at The New School in the 1990s and became part of a legendary generation of musicians associated with the neo soul movement, including Common, Bilal, Roy Hargrove, The Roots, and Robert Glasper. Harrold is a reliable and sought after player among big acts, and he's worked with Jay-Z, Beyonce, Rihanna, Eminem, Maxwell, Mac Miller and Snoop Dogg. At the same time he's a seriously gifted jazz improviser and composer, who was mentored by trumpeter Charles Tolliver, and who was once referred to as “the future of the trumpet” by Wynton Marsalis. He supplied all of the trumpet playing in Don Cheadle's Miles Davis biopic Miles Ahead, playing to match Cheadle's on-screen performance as Miles. The soundtrack to the film won a Grammy. But while Keyon has enjoyed what might appear to be a charmed career, he has also had a series of unexpected setbacks and heavy lived experiences that contribute to his musical journey. His new album Foreverland is a celebration of his multidimensional career and his sensitivity as an artist, proving that Harrold is a master of channeling his lived experience through his horn. The album features 10 original songs that explore themes of empowerment, positivity, love, loss, and vulnerability. And it's a family affair — nearly every musician is a longtime friend, including Common, Robert Glasper, Laura Mvula, Chris Dave, Marcus Gilmore, Nir Felder, Randy Runyon, BIGYUKI, Burniss Travis and many others. Here he talks about Foreverland, how a series of losses in his life ultimately led him to make “something beautiful, something positive, something inspiring,” and his reflections on the early days of his career as part of a community of like minded musicians who were “always open.” www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast

Tonight's Jazz Feature is one of the many that alto saxophonist Jackie McLean did for Blue Note Records during his early years with the label from 1959 to 1967. Jackie reached musical maturity during his Blue Note years and his playing progressed by leaps and bounds. This album seems unjustly neglected and deserves a hearing as the music is superb. It marks the recorded debut of trumpeter/composer Charles Tolliver. Charles contributes 3 compositions to the set which was recorded at Rudy van Gelder's Studio on August 5, 1964. Jackie McLean picked the great rhythm section with Herbie Hancock playing some very adventurous solos, On bass is Cecil McBee and on drums is the always creative "Mr Snap-Crackle" (Roy Haynes).. Mclean contributes 3 tunes to the set including the title track: "It's Time!". This Jazz Feature is a belated Birthday tribute to Mr. McLean who was born on May 17, 1931 in New York. It's Time for Jackie McLean!

La respuesta fue "Charles Tolliver, me gusta". Les invitamos a escuchar una selección de este trompetista y hacerle un poco de justicia musical. Esperamos que lo disfruten. Los temas son: 1. Tonight's Jazz Feature is a masterful album by one of the most distinctive voices of the alto saxophone John Lenwood McLean, better known as "Jackie". This is a date that he was proud of and rightly so. Mclean is in top form with this hand-picked quartet with pianist/composer Larry Willis on piano, the great Bob Cranshaw on bass and the dynamic Clifford Jarvis from Sun Ra's Archestra on drums. There are only four tunes on this date "Eco" by McLean opens the set with a bang. This is followed by the mournful and sad ode to the late Eric Dolphy by Larry Willis called "Poor Eric" the next is the uplifting and jagged "Christel's Time" by Mr. Willis and finally the exciting title track by trumpeter Charles Tolliver called "Right Now!". This often overlooked gem stands as one of Jackie McLean's finest outings and is over too soon! Check it out!

Charles Tolliver has lived his share of jazz history. As a fiery young sideman with Jackie McLean and Max Roach in the 1960s, he joined a lineage of exalted post-bop trumpeters, more than holding his own. But Tolliver also set a model of self-determination in the ‘70s, with a DIY record label called Strata-East.
For my guest today it is playing free music with Marion Brown or in Detroit where the spirits of Elvin, Tommy Flanagan and Yusef Lateef breeze by with a word of wisdom. Maybe it was with Rashan Roland Kirk back when Universities like Oberlin College could bring in a Cecil Taylor or Horace Tapscott for a year residency. Bands of younger musicians would form under their leadership. Because there were places to play cats could get loose on the bandstand at Slugs with Charles Tolliver or Jimmy and Tootie Heath. Late shows with Woody Shaw and long before our mothers cried with Sonny Fortune. The most spiritual music is created by my guest. He is patient and can also real off flurries of notes. He understands time and place. The opportunities that presented themselves to his generation. He was co-founder of The Strata East label which fused the language of swing and bebop with blues and soul. The music on this label had an urgency to it that spoke to the loss of lives- Dr. King, Malcolm X, Robert Kennedy and John Coltrane. The seeming upward mobility of a musician cutting albums and touring. Reinventing themselves to sustain their legacy and more importantly the music. As we all know, it's a jazz life. Episode 3 - African-American Art in the 20th Century in the Sunshine State. Among the many amazing artists in the exhibit, African-American Art in the 20th Century, is Purvis Young, a native to Florida. Since both Cornell Fine Arts Museum and the Major Scale are based in Central Florida, we thought we'd explore some regional Floridian roots. Young, the term "Outsider Artist," and the legendary Highwaymen are on the table for conversation as well as some of the Sunshine State's musical finest; including Slim Gaillard, Fats Navarro, Charles Tolliver, Gigi Gryce, Pee-Wee Ellis, Archie Shepp, and more.

We had decided to produce one podcast a month. So, Becky and I had settled into an easy Bar Crawl Radio July schedule -- the first annual BCR Margie Crawl was planned for the end of the month -- we had lined up some interesting guests -- things were going smoothly. Then, we went to Smoke -- a small venue jazz club on the UWS to hear jazz trumpet great -- Charles Tolliver. After the set, we talked to Mr. Tolliver and invited him to Bar Crawl Radio, and he said, “Sure -- I’m free next week.” So the research and planning started in a hurry. We had a great time talking with Charles at Gebhard’s Bar. He is a long time friend. We talked about his life as a musician and listen to several of his greatest hits and began the celebration for the 50th Anniversary of his “Paper Man” album -- culminating at the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival on Summer Stage late in August. A most entertaining conversation. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The sixth episode of the Burning Ambulance podcast features an interview with pianist Stanley Cowell. He’s a jazz veteran who made his recorded debut in 1967, on Marion Brown's albums Now What? and Three for Shepp. He’s also worked with Max Roach, Gary Bartz, Bobby Hutcherson, and the Heath Brothers, among others, and he co-founded the Strata-East label with trumpeter Charles Tolliver in the 1970s. In recent years, he retired from teaching at Rutgers University, and has assumed a more active recording and performing role; in 2015, he put out a solo album, Juneteenth, and in 2017, he released a quartet disc, No Illusions. In our interview, Cowell discusses his early career, his 1970s work as a solo artist and as part of the Piano Choir, his time as an educator, his fascination with electronic music and how he’s imported that interest into his own work, and much more. It’s a really interesting conversation I’ve been wanting to have for several years, and I hope you’ll enjoy it.

Episode 3, September 2007 Sounds of Berklee will have a Spanish flavor this month. The new track comes from Conrad Herwig's Sketches of Spain Y Mas, a collection of the trombonist's Latin jazz arrangements of classic Miles Davis compositions. When you listen to Herwig's arrangement of "Seven Steps to Heaven," you'll be getting just a taste of the BeanTown Jazz Festival's free outdoor concert this Saturday. The afternoon of music presents some of jazz's best artists—Herwig, Mike Stern, Claudia Acuña, and Charles Tolliver, to name a few—on three stages in Boston's historic South End. Come any time between noon and 6 p.m. and be a part of one of Boston's biggest annual music events—last year's festival attracted 60,000 people. And if you move fast, you might still be able to get tickets to Friday night's opening concert—A Celebration of Jazz and Joyce—boasting an extraordinary lineup of jazz greats, including Herbie Hancock, Michel Camilo, Geri Allen, and Joe Lovano. Subscribers to Sounds of Berklee get a free track each month recorded by a Berklee-related artist. It's a great way to learn about where music is headed.

This is an important document in Jackie McLean's recorded legacy for Blue Note Records, a label he recorded for from 1959 to 1968. McLean, who was a member of the second generation Modern Jazz players who came after Charlie Parker/Dizzy Gillespie/Bud Powell etc., was rooted in the language of what was called "Bebop". McLean in the 60's was open to new influences and of course was listening to Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy et al. He absorbed these influences into his own playing and retained his strong identity. His concept and his unique sound broadened and the albums that he recorded during this productive Blue Note period are treasured. Tonight's Feature is called "It's Time" and has McLean and a young trumpeter from Florida named Charles Tolliver who makes his recording debut here. Tolliver composed three compelling tunes for the album as well. McLean composed the remaining three. The energetic rhythm section makes this album really happen and you really can't go wrong with the incredible Herbie Hancock on piano, who at the time of this date (1964) was with Miles Davis. Cecil McBee always seems to get left out when someone mentions great bassists and of course, what can be said about drummer Roy Haynes that hasn't been said before. Haynes is now 84 and still playing with the same energy and creativity as he does on this record. "It's Time" is representative of the best of Jackie Mclean and company, so sit back and enjoy what these master musicians have to offer.
