God lytting!

Addiction is an all-encompassing force, in not only of the lives of the afflicted, but also those around them. OUR AMERICAN FAMILY provides an honest, unfiltered look at a close-knit Philadelphia family dealing with generational substance abuse. Captured at a pivotal “nothing to lose” moment, for over the course of a year, five family members tired of life with addiction on center stage, each struggle to transcend their crippling histories. What will it take to shift this entrenched, wrenching pattern in their lives? Will they be able to make significant shifts to help their next generation? The members of OUR AMERICAN FAMILY - Nicole, Lynda, Bryan, Chris and Stephen - invite us into their lives to find hope and to explore what's possible. Though they often falter, their familial loyalty is powerful, demonstrating how through love and dedication people can rise out of the deepest depths. For a touching, eye-opening look into one of America's most pressing crises, look no further. Co-directors Hallee Adelman (Writing with Fire, Us Kids, Truffle Hunters) and Sean King O'Grady (In A World, The Assistant, Dinner in America) join us for a remarkably candid look inside the internal dynamics of a family operating at the edge of viability as well as a dogged determination to not give up. In forests across the planet, secretive hunters are searching for that rare and insanely expensive wild delicacy: the truffle. The organism, which grows underground, tethered to tree roots, can fetch thousands of dollars per pound from upscale restaurateurs. The only way to find these particular fungi are dogs specially trained to sniff them out. Not surprisingly, the truffle business is not unlike the illegal-drug business, with lots of sneaking around in the night and powerful characters vying for control over markets. Outside contributing editor Rowan Jacobsen took a journey deep into the underworld of truffle hunters that began in the in the ancient forests of Europe and ended up, very unexpectedly, in the hills of Appalachia. I will be posting new episodes by the end of the month, but in the meanwhile I'm reposting this interview because damn it made me laugh. Since we sat down Michael and I almost made a movie together but he has also had numerous films in Sundance including The Truffle Hunters and The Fight both available for streaming, now! Original notes... Michael Sherman is a prolific and successful independent film festival whose recent film, NATIVE SON, premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival where it sold to HBO for 8 figures. He's also started fashion companies, written movies and TV and lived his share of war stories. He tells some great ones, here.
Introduction: Minutes 0 to 5:30 We'll be off for the holidays and back on January 8th. I highly recommend the Netflix documentary 14 Peaks, the inspiring story of Nepalese mountaineer Nims Purja. Chandra recommends the documentary The Truffle Hunters, about the dying art of Italian truffle hunting. Chandra also liked The Power of The Dog after initially giving up on it due to an animal abuse scene. Royals: Minutes 5:30 to 11:15 Duchess Kate is one of two People magazine covers this week. The profile is a typical embiggening piece. A British royal commentator named Tessa Dunlop made backhanded compliments about Kate's matronly style. We talk about Kate's style and how it's always off somehow. I play a segment from Zoom where we talk about this. Ben Affleck: Minutes 11:15 to 18 Ben Affleck is promoting his movie on Amazon prime called The Tender Bar. Ben really showed his a- in an interview with Howard Stern. He said that if he stayed with Jennifer Garner “We probably would've ended up at each other's throats. I probably still would've been drinking. Part of why I started drinking was because I was trapped.” In his follow up appearance on Kimmel, Ben did not seem sober. Ben has a history of sabotaging himself and blaming the women in his life. I play a segment from Zoom where we talk about Ben. Our favorite stories of the year: Minutes 18 to 29:30 One of Chandra's favorite stories from 2021 was the Keenwell Institute. There was so much hype ahead of the announcement including a ridiculous commercial featuring footage of Nelson Mandela, Malala and JFK. From Chandra: Kate launched The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, a “research institute” housed within Kensington Palace. There was a “report” called Big Change Starts Small. The report amounted to “the early years are so important, you guys.” I called it the Keenwell Institute for Buttons and Early Years. We've barely heard anything about it since. Kate did a couple of events around it back in June and then nothing. From Chandra: The craziness with Sophie, the Countess of Wessex. Sophie tried to make herself into a senior royal in 2020, and she was clearly pitching herself as a replacement to the Sussexes. Then after Prince Philip passed away, Sophie and Edward went on a publicity tour, giving interviews and taking swipes at Harry, Meghan and Oprah. Sophie pitched herself as the Queen's “rock” and her favorite in-law. Sophie's people also claimed that “Philip would have wanted her” to seek the spotlight. Sophie was thirsty as hell. And then she just stopped. I tend to believe Prince Charles told them to stop. Probably around the same time he told Edward he would never be Duke of Edinburgh. From CB again: My favorite story was the ongoing one where various celebrities revealed that they don't bathe and that they don't use soap. As we mentioned on episode 99, we got hate mail for telling people to bathe. It started with Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis saying in late July on Dax Shepard's podcast that they don't bathe their children until they're visibly dirty and that they barely use soap. Then Jake Gyllenhaal did that insane interview with Vanity Fair in early August where said he finds “bathing to be less necessary” and that “we naturally clean ourselves.” Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard said they don't bathe their kids until they smell bad and then other celebrities like The Rock and Jason Momoa assured us that they do bathe. It was crazy and there never should have been a controversy over not bathing. I also wanted to include the story that the vaccines were distributed this year. It was less than a year from the pandemic to the development, testing and emergency use approval of three different vaccines in the US that are incredibly effective against covid and that was a scientific triumph. Comments of the Week: Minutes 29:30 to end Chandra's comment of the week is from TigerMcQueen on the post about Kate on the cover of People. My comment of the week is from ThatsNotOkay on the post about Alec Baldwin hushing Hilaria while she was in labor with their child. Thanks for listening bitches! Have a great holiday and a happy new year!

It's truffle season, and prices for the highly sought-after white truffles soared this year to around $4,000 per pound. The market is the subject of the documentary “The Truffle Hunters,” as well as Rowan Jacobsen’s book, “Truffle Hound.” We spoke to Jacobsen about the evolving, but still foggy, truffle market. In keeping with books, we also discuss the Federal Reserve’s Beige Book, which serves as an economic snapshot through the lens of regional banks.

[REBROADCAST FROM MARCH 5, 2021] Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw join us to discuss directing and producing the film, "The Truffle Hunters." The film follows a group of men in Piedmont, Italy, searching for the valuable and rare white Alba truffle. This segment is guest-hosted by Matt Katz.
The documentary "The Truffle Hunters" follows a small group of secretive old men in the Piedmont region of Italy, who've spent their lives digging up the rare, and exceedingly expensive, white truffle. The movie looks at their quiet, quirky lives as they deal with a changing economic and global climate, and revel in the companionship of their truffle-sniffing dogs. KMUW's Fletcher Powell recently spoke with the movie's directors, Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw, about how they bring the audience into this unusual world. The interview has been edited for length and clarity. FLETCHER POWELL: When I think of all of our five senses, the one that's the most difficult to convey in a movie is smell. Which is too bad, because it's also the one that biologically is the most connected to our memory and our emotions. And for you, it was something that you had to figure out because, I gather, the key to understanding the allure of truffles is smell. So, I'm curious what you talked about as you
Reunited at the movies, and it feels so good. WEMU's David Fair returns for this week's "Cinema Chat." He talks with Michigan Theater Foundation executive director, Russ Collins, about the latest movie news and all of the films hitting the big screen this weekend.
In case you missed it, we are re-releasing our interview with filmmakers Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw on their documentary, The Truffle Hunters from 2020's Sundance Film Festival. The film recently received the ASC Documentary Award. Filmmakers Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw ventured deep in the forests near Alba, Italy for their documentary, The Truffle Hunters. This region is known for its rare white truffles, fetching thousands of dollars for the acclaimed delicacy. The methods of where and how to find truffles is a closely guarded secret. This small group of elderly men seek them in darkness, hiking for miles with their dogs and covering their tracks so no one knows where they go. The film is beautifully composed and uses mostly natural light. The filmmakers chose to keep the camera on a tripod and to observe the subjects at a distance, except for special leather harness rigs for POV doggy-cams that Dweck and Kershaw had specially made. You can find The Truffle Hunters in select theaters and available to rent on video on demand in the coming weeks. https://www.sonyclassics.com/film/thetrufflehunters/ Instagram: @thetrufflehuntersfilm Find Michael Dweck: Twitter @michaeldweck Instagram @michaeldweckstudio Find Gregory Kershaw: Instagram @gregorykershaw Find out even more about this episode, with show notes and links: https://www.camnoir.com/bonustrufflehunters/ LIKE AND FOLLOW US, send fan mail or suggestions! THE TRUFFLE HUNTERS is an Italian documentary. It offers unique insights into the lives of a handful of elderly men, their dogs, and the joys and trials of truffle hunting in the forests of Piedmont, Italy. The men in the remote village are a remnant of a long generational legacy of truffle hunting. At the same time, the demand for the delicacy increases around them. While some are motivated by money, most of the old hunters love their time in nature with their skilled dogs, and the smell of truffle. However, with few young people taking up the mantle and few old people willing to relinquish their secrets, the practice only grows more coveted.

James Jordan, the father of basketball legend Michael Jordan, was found tragically murdered in the middle of swamp just days after his 57th birthday in 1993. There were many mysterious circumstances surrounding his death, but the investigation and trial were deemed a success, resulting in the conviction of two teenage boys. But why does one of the convicted still proclaim his innocence almost 30 years later? We are joined by award-winning director and producer of the soon to be released docu-series Moment of Truth, Matthew Perniciaro. The five-part series uses never-before-seen archive footage to tell the story behind the murder of James Jordan. It also tackles police corruption in Robeson County, North Carolina, and how that may have influenced the murder investigation. Matthew aims to give us insights into how Michael dealt with his father's death, and what made this crime so hard to solve. He explains what motivated him to make Moment of Truth, and the challenges he faced along the way. Moment of Truth premieres on IMDb TV, Amazon's premium free streaming service, on April 2nd. “Despite the fact that we think we've made so much progress as a society and as a culture, this just shows how far we still have to go.” - Matthew Perniciaro Time Stamps: 00:09 - The trailer for Moment of Truth. 03:15 - When and where the docu-series will be released. 04:10 - What the series is about. 06:41 - Who James Jordan was and how supportive he was of his kids. 08:48 - The mysteries surrounding James's whereabouts before his death. 10:15 - The cross-county search and the difficulties with identifying his body. 11:43 - The acceptance of the suspects' guilt at the time. 14:21 - How Michael Jordan was affected by his father's death. 15:52 - Why Michael and his family didn't want to do an interview for the film. 18:10 - The history of police corruption in Robeson County, NC. 25:04 - The public disbelief surrounding the narrative of the case. 32:57 - The issues with the police interrogations of the suspects. 37:24 - How the idea to make the docu-series came about. 40:57 - How Covid disrupted the filming process. 45:24 - What Matthew's experiences were in directing the series. 48:05 - The difference between being a producer and an executive producer. 50:45 - What Matthew's goals are when he chooses which films to produce. 57:17 - The different projects he is now working on.
