The Microphones, titulado “The Microphones in 2020”.

Then they address this week's music-critic controversy involving a bad review of the new Halsey album, and the predictable freakout from chronically online fans. After that, they check in on the Fantasy Albums Draft and talk about the latest from Mount Eerie as well as Phil Elverum's career with The Microphones. Then they do a "Scene Report" segment on recent concerts by Knocked Loose and Drive-By Truckers. In the mailbag, the guys are asked about "time and place" bands, i.e. acts that were set up to make one perfect album and nothing else. Talkhouse Podcast

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a very cool episode that was inspired by a very cool performance coming up in Los Angeles soon. It's David Longstreth in conversation with Phil Elverum. Longstreth is the focal point of the band Dirty Projectors, which formed about 20 years ago in Brooklyn, and was part of a scene that kind of elevated indie-pop into something more serious and timeless. It's been clear throughout the years that Longstreth is a musical searcher, having never been content to repeat himself. That's led to an incredibly varied catalog that can even border on pleasantly confusing, and the huge undertaking that he's in the midst of—and the starting point of this conversation—is no exception. About 10 years ago, Longstreth began working on what I'd guess you'd call a contemporary classical song cycle called Song of the Earth, which he performed with the ensemble stargaze a few years back. He's since been refining and reworking the piece, and along with Dirty Projectors and the world-renowned L.A. Philharmonic, he'll perform it on March 2 at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. That's a huge group of people and a massive undertaking—and not to be missed. At almost the opposite end of the spectrum will be that evening's opening act, Mount Eerie, aka renowned minimalist songwriter Phil Elverum. Elverum is almost a mythical figure in indie-rock, having forged a truly unique path over the past decade, first under the name The Microphones and later Mount Eerie. His music is often deeply personal, and he'll move from simply structured indie-folk into fully immersive lo-fi drones in ways that can confound and disarm. His catalog is wide and deep, though if you're unfamiliar with his music, a good place to start is 2001's The Glow Pt. 2. At this concert, he'll not only open the show for Dirty Projectors but he'll also—as you'll hear—participate a little bit, because Longstreth tapped Elverum to help out on a Song of The Earth piece called “Twin Aspens.” They were nice enough to give us a preview of the piece here, so check out a little bit of a not-quite-final version of “Twin Aspens,” composed by Longstreth and with some help from Elverum. As you'll hear in this conversation, these guys are deeply immersed in music, and certainly not just pop music. From hearing them chat I learned about Japanese Gagaku music, among other things. They also talk at length about Elverum's incredible album-length song “Microphones in 2020,” which is essentially a history of his own evolution, with a fascinating visual to go along with it. They also talk a lot about starting the creative process with a palette in mind, which I found fascinating as well. Enjoy the chat, and if you're in the L.A. area, I think there are a few tickets left for this once-in-a-lifetime performance on March 2. Enjoy.  Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to David Longstreth and Phil Elverum for talking. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the great stuff at Talkhouse.com. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. Annie Fell has my eternal thanks for stepping in to record it at the last minute, too. Phil Elverum is the primary songwriter, performer, and producer for  Mount Eerie and The Microphones. For around 27 years, Phil has been creating some of the most revered and critically acclaimed indie folk of all time. His music veers between stripped back acoustic guitar recordings, to terrifyingly loud and distorted sonic experiments. Mount Eerie is currently on the verge of a return to Aotearoa, playing  in Tāmaki Makaurau, Pōneke, and Ōtepoti with Black Belt Eagle Scout - another band from Washington State that will bring new and classic Mount Eerie tunes to a new, full band soundscape.  I've been obsessed with the music of The Microphones and Mount Eerie since I was fourteen. I think I had the Glow Part 2 album cover as my profile picture on Google for about four years, so suffice to say it was a real privilege to interview him. We had a yarn about the upcoming shows, his previous tours of Aotearoa, twenty years of the Mount Eerie name, and more.

Devendra Banhart, Phil Elverum, Jenny Hval and Bedouine discuss eating on tour, how art is intimacy exposed, and what can be learned from terrible shows. Devendra Banhart, was born in Texas and raised between Venezuela and California, where he attended the San Francisco Art Institute. After dropping out in 2000, he started moving around different cities, experimenting with songwriting and busking as he went. When he released his second album, Oh Me Oh My, in 2002 ,he signed to XL Recordings, and has since released nine albums and collaborated with artists like Anohni, Beck and The Strokes' Fabrizio Moretti. His new album Flying Wig has just come out and was recorded in a Topanga cabin once owned by Neil Young. He's also a visual artist, and has had pieces featured in galleries including San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art, MOCA and Brussels' Centre for Fine Arts. Phil Elverum is a singer-songwriter, producer and visual artist from Washington state. Best known for his musical projects The Microphones and Mount Eerie, he almost exclusively uses analogue recording equipment to make music and tends to compose as he records. His output spans more than 40 albums. Norwegian singer-songwriter, producer and novelist Jenny Hval's avant-garde music has a heavy focus on sexuality and politics. Her debut EP Cigars was released in 2006 and was nominated for a Spellemannprisen (the Nowegian Grammys). Since then, she has released music under her own name, Rocket to the Sky and collaboratively with Laura Jean as Lost Girls. Bedouine is a Syrian-American folk musician whose sound is beautifully reminiscent of 1960s North America. Born in Aleppo, Syria, she grew up between Saudi Arabia and Texas before settling in Savannah to study sound design. Since then, she's released three studio albums and toured with the likes of Fleet Foxes, Michael Kiwanuka and Jose Gonzalez.

This week we welcome Phil Elverum and Marianna Ritchey to talk about the life and art of Geneviève Castrée.    Geneviève Castrée was a French Canadian cartoonist, illustrator and musician. She was the author of the books Susceptible, A Bubble, and more. She had art exhibitions around the world and toured musically under the names O Paeon and Woelv.    Geneviève passed away on July 9, 2016, at only 35 years old.    She is one of my favorite artists.     Drawn and Quarterly just released her complete works, a giant beautiful book organized, edited and assembled by her husband, Phil Elverum (Mt. Eerie, Microphones).      Marianna Ritchey is  a professor, a musician, and the author of the book Composing Capital: Classical Music in the Neoliberal Era .    She's an old friend of mine, and a longtime friend of Genevieve's.    Towards the end of her life, Geneviève created an oracle deck from collaged magazines, and Ritchey was listed as one of her collaborators. If you get the book, which I really hope you do, you'll see little bits of Ritchey sprinkled throughout, in a diary comic from Australia with her band Lloyd and Michael, and in lists.    I invited her on to talk about the oracle deck and her late friend.    "She was so great. She was a beautiful, wonderful, totally unique person, and I hope everyone will look through this book, and just think about how special she was, and how much she put into the world in such a short amount of time that she was here."  -Ritchey

My Favourite Elliott Smith Song

Today, we're welcoming Phil Elverum onto the podcast. Phil has been releasing music for over 20 years now. First, through his band The Microphones and then under the name Mount Eerie - a project he started in 2003 and is still running today. The Making of MOUNT EERIE by the Microphones - featuring Phil Elverum

In this episode, Phil Elverum reflects on the experience of making MOUNT EERIE, the last album made under the Microphones name before adopting Mount Eerie as his project name. Phil gets into the process of taking a different approach from his previous album, THE GLOW PT. 2, and conceiving of a theatrical story about death and transformation. As his final album recorded in Olympia, Phil talks about embracing collaboration and enlisting friends from the Pacific Northwest music scene, including Mirah Zeitlyn, Khaela Maricich, Kyle Field, Karl Blau and Calvin Johnson to take on the roles of different characters. From the initial inspiration of driving around in Florida shortly after September 11th happened, to the difficulties of solo recording a 10-minute samba drum section to tape to taking inspiration from artists like Sade, Bjork and Timbaland to the young person's search for meaning, we'll hear the stories around how the record came together.

Conversations With Matt Dwyer

Musicians like Kyle Field of Little Wings, and Phil Elverum of The Microphones and Mount Eerie have been singing the praises of Lee Baggett for years. Lee has been legend in certain circles garnering praise for his songwriting and guitar playing. He joins Dwyer in his one of his only interviews to talk about surfing, why he's been such a mysterious figure, his influences, playing guitar like Eddie Van Halen and his new Just A Minute album coming out April 30th on Perpetual Doom.Opening Song, Just A Minute by Lee BaggettBuy the vinyl version Just A Minute HERE Lee's Bandcamp HEREThe video for Just A Minute HEREThe Legend of Lee Baggett video HERE Lee playing Eruption HEREAll Things Dwyer HEREConversations With Dwyer is Produced, Edited and hosted by Matt DwyerConsulting Producer: Dustin Marshall See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Just a few hours prior to recording, a couple stories grabbed Greg’s attention & inspired our newest named segment, which he’s calling “Tay-Tay Today”. A little over a year ago, former Kanye West manager Scooter Braun purchased Big Machine Label Group which owned the rights to Taylor Swift’s first six albums. In spectacular fashion, the Swifties unleashed on Scootie and drama ensued (interesting to note, Scooter has incredibly thin skin, which is really surprising, given his name, which is Scooter). So this week news dropped that Mr. Braun sold the rights to her catalog & Taylor confirmed that she’s been re-recording her entire catalog to give fans a way to listen to her music without supporting her adversaries. Oh Taylor, we genuinely love you! [Variety & Variety]Song: Here Lies Man - “I Told You (You Shall Die)”In other news, Jason Isbell & Amanda Shires announced that they were leaving the Country Music Association over the CMA’s failure to honor John Prine (as well as Jerry Jeff Walker and Billy Joe Shaver) during the ceremony. So, basically the most perfectly assembled Jay story ever. We get into it and pivot to some overall issues facing Nashville today. [Pitchfork]Song: Barry Gibb - “Word of a Fool”Nick has some bad news, apparently vinyl is on its way out & we have COVID-19 to blame!! Actually, it looks like production is down because of plant shutdowns and sales haven’t been as high (probably because of the aforementioned drop in production, resulting in reduced availability). Nevertheless, Pitchfork is proclaiming the “Vinyl Revival” in jeopardy & we proclaim that assessment “Total BS”. [Pitchfork]Also, he’s really been digging Microphones in 2020 & everything else Phil Elverum has ben making the past few years.Album/Song: The Microphones in 2020

My guest today is Phil Elverum. Phil has been making music under the moniker Mount Eerie, named for a mountain in Washington, since 2003. Prior to that, he made music as The Microphones. We’ll get to the origin of that band name later. I first met Phil in the mid-2000s in his hometown of Anacortes, WA, a small town where for years he helped organize What The Heck Fest, a music festival that drew acts and audience members from the world over. In the last 25 years he has been taking his music all over this earth and has released and produced a ton of music and visual art. On his latest album, he goes back to being the Microphones again. Simply titled Microphones in 2020, he delivers a sung memoir on his music career so far, over the course of a single 45 minute song. There’s a really beautiful video of it that you can find online, too. I called my friend Phil to chat about the new record, his winter isolated in a rural cabin in norway, photography, his hilarious cartoons, writing about life, and death, and his artistic development while living in Olympia. If you like this show and want to help it keep growing, you can subscribe to the show wherever you get podcasts. Patreon.com/lowprofile is a place you can throw a few bucks this way. I’ve also been putting more stuff on instagram @lowpropodcast for people who like to look at things. If you want a sticker or a button, just ask. Life hack: the buttons work really well to connect a face mask behind a kid’s head! And the stickers fit right over your eyes if it’s ever all too much for you. And it lets people know you love Low Profile. Here’s my conversation with the original line-up of the Microphones.

Since the late '90s, Phil Elverum has remained at work on one of the strangest and most beautiful discographies in independent rock. As The Microphones, he created genre-defining records like 2001's The Glow Pt. 2, which has been hailed by critics like Heather Phares, who praised its "kaleidoscopic sounds...pastoral folky ballads, playful symphonic pop, and gusts of white noise," and Elverum's "strangely hymnal lyrics." In 2003, he abandoned the name The Microphones and embarked upon a series of records under the Mount Eerie moniker. They not only retained that sense of spaciousness, but greatly expanded it, incorporating the influence of black metal and extended song lengths. In 2016, Genevieve Castree, and illustrator, musician, and cartoonist, and also Phil’s wife and the mother of their daughter Agathe, passed away from pancreatic cancer. Phil recorded a set of harrowing, beautiful, and extraordinarily human albums about the experience, including A Crow Looked at Me, Now Only, and Lost Wisdom Pt. 2, recorded with Julie Doiron. Along the way, he married actress Michelle Williams and moved to New York City, though that relationship has ended and he and Agathe are back in the Pacific Northwest these days. It’s hard to sum up Elverum’s story, but in a weird way, that’s kind of what he does on his new record, The Microphones in 2020, which features one, 44-minute long song. It’s his first time using the Microphones name since 2003, and to hear him express it, it’s kind of an album about identity. While it’s no less autobiographical than his recent records, it’s a step in a different direction, temporal poetry about transience and the way a person becomes a different person—but somehow, it's also how they stay the same person. Once again, we’re dabbling in paradox and contradiction. Elverum created a film to go along with it, in which he displays decades worth of personal photographs, occasionally brushing them from the frame, where they are replaced by new images. And that’s where we find Phil: in the midst of trying to figure out how time shapes and creates us, and how we shape and conceive of time. This week on Transmissions, he opens his (virtual) door and invites us in to discuss the new album, personal history, identity, and Weird Al.

Royals: Minutes 2.5 to 11 In this episode of Gossip with Celebitchy, we talk about Duchess Meghan’s impending birth, which hasn’t happened yet as of this morning, 4/29. I mention that Meghan may have had the baby already and not announced it but Chandra said that couldn’t happen or royal reporters would throw a fit! We mention the crazy story that Harry and Meghan would move overseas, which originated in the reputable Sunday Times of London. Sources told The Sunday Times it was William’s idea as Harry and Meghan were getting too much attention. Follow-up stories next claimed it was Harry’s idea! Then Vanity Fair told the Sussex’s side that they were staying in the UK and were not consulting with any family member except The Queen and Prince Charles. We wonder about this notion that William is preparing to king when his father is next in line.  Olivia Munn: Minutes 11 to 18 Olivia Munn posted a bizarre rant against Heather and Jessica of The Fug Girls, using their photos, names, and mischaracterizing their lighthearted fashion commentary. We talk about her hypocrisy and make a decision about our future coverage of her. Game of Thrones spoiler free: Minutes 18 to 20.5 We cover the excitement over Game of Thrones. Chandra says that the fan theories are getting out of control. She explains the way that White Walkers are made as I was unclear about this. Celebrity splits: Minutes 20.5 to 25.5 We discuss three recent celebrity splits: Adele and Simon Konecki, Anna Camp and Skylar Astin and Michelle Williams and the guy we barely heard about, Phil Elverum. Chandra loves Fossey Verdon and mentions that Michelle has crazy chemistry with Sam Rockwell. User questions including blind items: Minutes 25.5 to 31.5 Pamela and Caity asked us on Twitter about whether we get sent tips, particularly by publicists. We talk about a tip we got in 2010 from a woman who claims her friend slept with John Mayer! I read an excerpt from that email at minute 27. Chandra loves promo emails from designers and jewelry companies. Chandra spoke to a 90s icon several years ago from whom she got some blind items about another celebrity that person hates. Comments of the week: Minutes 31.5 to end My comment of the week was from BchyYogi about Jennifer Garner’s shoes. Chandra’s comment of the week was a matter-of-fact one about white privilege from ByTheSea on a Lori Loughlin post. We talk about white privilege and how trolls call us racist against white people. That’s not a thing!

The Toadcast - the weekly podcast from Song, by Toad

Well the Funkcast was probably about as gentle a 'tell me about this genre' podcast as you're likely to get.  This, on the other hand, is not gentle.  I suppose it was never likely to be - there's only so gentle an introduction you can give to this kind of music. Basically, I was becoming increasingly curious about the number of alt-folkies I know who come from heavy metal backgrounds.  Loads of my friends here who I know because we all listen to indie rock or alternative folk or all sorts of things inbetween seem to have been really into metal when they were young.  This doesn't entirely make sense to me because I see very little connection between the two kinds of music, and for so many people to have made that transition it must be a strong connection. Then, of course, it turns out that loads of people whose music I listen to - alt-folk, once again - also grew up listening to metal.  The Mountain Goats' John Darnielle, Phil Elverum of Mount Eerie and, more locally, Dan from Withered Hand and Neil from Meursault.  So, having been round at the house doing artwork for their single releases I asked the Neil and Chris from Meursault and Matthew who helps out with the label to put together a metal podcast.  It might not be quite as pleasant to cook your bacon sandwiches to on Sunday afternoon, but erm, well I never made any promises with these bloody podcasts anyway - just deal with it, we'll probably be back to the alt-folk next week.
