Most Kenyan youths live under the gloom of economic uncertainty which leads to hopelessness. This has been against a backdrop of multiple interventions from the government and other stakeholders. Regardless, the subject of youth and livelihoods has endured massive interest within Kenya, with the youth bulge described as an ‘opportunity' and a ‘ticking time bomb' in some quarters. What cannot be understated however is that the conversations are often single sided focusing on youth unemployment which leads to other conversation son how young men find themselves in crime. A less talked about group is the youthful middle class and the challenges they face since their issues take a backseat as the government focuses on dealing with crime and unemployment. In this episode, we hosted Dr. Peter Lockwood who is a political economist and research fellow at the University of Manchester and has done research on the issues facing the youths in Kenya to give us a better perspective. More details about Peter's work can be found by following this link https://www.graduateinstitute.ch/discover-institute/peter-lockwood-0

Dan McCrory joins Robert for this episode. Dan has written a book called Capitalism Killed the Middle Class: 25 Ways the System is Rigged Against You. It's part memoir, part history, part cautionary tale as he covers everything from the gig economy to the criminal injustice system. The book takes on the criminal justice system, trade, healthcare, the Powell memo, and the 1033 project! Housing, homelessness, the two-party system, why we don't have a labor party, workplace equality, FDR as savior of the middle class, the gig economy, universal basic income, AI (technology), the American caste system, education, the Green New Deal, and Black Lives Matter. The premise: a renewed labor movement can save the middle class. He's also working on two sequels: ReBuilding Union and Capitalism Kills: the Global Edition. The gyms of urban ‘new India’ are intriguing spaces. While they cater largely to well-off clients, these shiny, modern institutions are also vehicles of upward mobility for the trainers and specialists who work there. As they learn English, ‘upgrade’ their dressing style and try to develop a deeper understanding of the lives of their upmarket customers., they break with an older kind of masculinity represented by the pehlwans in their akharas. Equally, the gym aspires to be a safe space for women—a break from the toxic masculinity they must deal with outside its walls. Yet, the more things change, the more they remain the same. Class barriers are less permeable than they appear. The use of bodily capital to breach them is more fraught with danger than one might anticipate. And the profession is riddled with pitfalls and contradictions. Michiel Baas has spent a decade studying gyms, trainers and bodybuilders, and finds in them a new way to investigate India. He walks us through the homes and workspaces of these men—yes, they are almost all men—to bodybuilding competitions and also into their most intimate worlds of ambitions, desires and struggles. In Muscular India: Masculinity, Mobility & the New Middle Class (Context, 2020), Baas unveils a fascinating world, hidden in plain sight. Lakshita Malik is a doctoral student in the department of Anthropology at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her work focuses on questions of intimacies, class, gender, and beauty in South Asia. The $68 trillion transfer of wealth in America is evaporating amid the economic crisis. The number is staggering but the wealth and private businesses accumulated by the Boomers is starting to show that it may not have the staying power to pass on to future generations. What does this mean to the future of the American Economy as we know it? According to a survey by the Center for New Middle Class, there was a 25% drop in the number of baby boomers who said they are self-employed or own their own business in the second quarter. That impact could have significant repercussions for the economy at large considering that baby boomers own nearly half of privately-held businesses with employees in the U.S., according to Project Equity. That’s 2.34 million businesses with 24.7 million employees and $5.1 trillion in sales, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Hosts Zack Hayes and Phil Hayes break it all down in this week's episode of Pure Speculation. Follow us on Twitter @strugglestate Read More on StruggleState.com
Ancient Channels: Live at The Zoo, Fortitude Valley, 23 July 2020 In 2019 Kelly Hanlon from Terra Pines and DEAFCULT joined with Chris Preindl from Leavings, Apparitions and Vestiges to start a new musical project called Ancient Channels. With Hanlon on vocals, guitars and keyboards and Preindl handling drums and percussion, they recorded an album called "Moments In Ruin". While trickling out a string of singles ahead of the album's release, they recruited an all-star team to bring the multi-layered songs to life onstage, featuring talent from bands including A Country Practice, Start Together, The New Middle Class and Julia R. Anderson's band. In addition to Hanlon and Preindl, the full seven-piece lineup of Ancient Channels features Elise Clark on vocals, Gerard Lawrence on guitar, Joel and Kelly Saunders on keys and Imogen Kowalcyzk on bass. This set you're about to hear is notable for two reasons. First, it was the debut live performance of Ancient Channels, and second, it was the first gig to be recorded by Live Delay since the easing of restrictions on live music venues that came about as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Special safety precautions were in place at this gig, such as isolated, jazz club-style seating, reduced venue capacity and stringent cleaning measures before and after the show. Recorded by Scott Mercer Mixed by James Potts Special thanks to live engineer Steve Palmer Pale: Live at The Zoo, Fortitude Valley, 9 August 2019 In 1992 Tim Hills and Ben Thompson from the band The Modern Poets struck out on their own to form a new outfit called Pale. Soon joined by drummer Dale Rankine, their debut EP, "Submerged" was released on cassette later that year. This was followed by three further EPs on CD: "Fade Buzz" in 1994, "Felicia's Window" in 1995 and "Art Of Mind Control" in 1996. The single "Lemon Sparked", off "Fade Buzz", reached number 62 in the 1994 Triple J Hottest 100. Rankine ultimately left the trio and was replaced by Leigh Nelson from the bands Freeside and Tangled Shoelaces. In the late '90s Pale's members began exploring more and more side projects, and they eventually split in 2001 after the release of the album "Travelling Indoors". Since then they have reunited for special occasions in 2006, 2014 and most recently in 2019, at this gig you're about to hear, which featured both drummers from the band's history taking turns behind the kit. Recorded by James Fearn-Wannan Mixed by Harry McKenzie Special thanks to live engineer Steve Palmer This set was mixed by an audio production student from the School of Audio Engineering Institute Brisbane as part of their course. Show production, engineering and host: Scott Mercer Originally aired via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 25 October, 2020

One of the most financially fragile demographics in this country is women who have none prime credit scores. They are a part of the new middle class and these are women who experience challenges unlike many other parts of the population because they are often mothers, caretakers to elderly relatives, and the people in charge of their households. Their financial wellness matters to many people in their families and in their communities. We’re tackling this important topic today and our guest is spearheading research to better understand and help these women and all members of the new middle class. Jonathan Walker is the Executive Director of Elevate's Center for the New Middle Class. There he conducts research to better understand the behaviors, the attitudes and challenges of America’s growing “new middle class”. We discuss what is the new middle class, what are the specific challenges that they have, and how is the new middle class forming and shaping our country’s economics. Follow Elevate’s Center for the New Middle Class on Twitter @NewMidClass and learn more here.
