Saturday Morning with Jack Tame

I got off the Waiheke ferry, and there she was. Waiting and waving, standing in her usual spot. Jack! She said. I gave my aunty a big hug and we walked off jetty to the same spot she always parks when I come to visit for the weekend.‘Have you heard about the car drama?’ she asked.‘Oh no.. ‘ I said. ‘What happened?’‘The window fell out.’‘What?’‘The back window. I was just driving along one day and it fell out into the boot.’‘Oh my god what did you do?’‘Oh I just drove it to the wreckers.. It had a good life.’You will know if you’ve spent a bit of time with us on Saturday mornings, crappy cars are a common theme in my family. But of all the beaten up, fifth-hand, how-the-hell-did-THAT-get-a-warrant vehicles that have at some point been owned by someone in my whānau, my Aunt’s Waiheke island paddock bashers usually took the crummy cake.‘You wait!’ she said as we reached the end of the jetty.‘You won’t believe how flash my new car is’And there it was. Sleek and modern. And very much unlike anything I’d ever seen my aunty drive ever before. In her same park in the Waiheke ferry drop off zone, with a remote locking feature and leather seats and a back window that didn’t for a moment appear like it might fall out on the way home. A brand new Nissan Leaf.Well, technically it wasn’t brand new. It was just like any other import. It was second or third hand. A first generation Nissan Leaf imported from overseas my aunty had picked up for $10,000. The first person in our family to own a fully electric vehicle.Honestly, it could hardly have been easier. My aunty let me drive, and it handled more or less exactly the same as my Toyota Corolla hatchback, except there wasn’t the lag time when you put your foot on the gas.I’d be lying if I said it was quite as fancy or chic as a brand new Tesla, but the amazing thing for me was just how ordinary it felt. It just felt like driving any other hatchback, except that it was really quiet. We got home and plugged it in, like a big purple vacuum cleaner. Easy as that.Waiheke Island might be the perfect place for electric vehicles. It’s small. It’s contained. Petrol’s expensive. There are plenty of environmentally-minded people, and the vast majority of journeys are well under a hundred Ks.But actually Waiheke is in some ways a mini New Zealand. How many of us are consistently  driving more than 100kms in our day to day errands? I’m not talking about delivery people driving professionally or heavy vehicles or anything like that. I just mean our domestic every day run-around-town vehicles? Be honest. Most of us aren’t travelling that far. I checked out the new versions of the Nissan Leaf, keeping in mind these cars are at low end of the electric vehicle markets. A new Nissan Leaf Plus has a battery which will comfortably travel 300 kilometres. All of this is to say that in 16 years time, we can reasonably expect Electric vehicle technology and price to be much better than today. So what if by 2035 we ban petrol vehicles from our domestic market? Or require people to have a special license or pay a special tax to drive combustion vehicles in their day-to-day errands.Flash as my aunty’s new car might be compared to her last vehicle, transitioning to an electric vehicle really isn’t such a big deal.

Show #429.   Can You Help Me Fight The Fossils? Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 29th March 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Hello to two new patrons of the show. Welcome to CLIFF BATES and PRODUCER GEOFF GATES   KIA SOUL EV 2020 REVIEWS CNET says: ”As for the all-important driving range, the Soul EV is extremely competitive. The EPA officially rates the Soul EV at 243 miles of range, which bests the Chevrolet Bolt (238 miles), Kia Niro EV (239 miles) and Nissan Leaf Plus (226 miles). Only the Hyundai Kona Electric can go farther than the Soul, with its EPA-rated 258-mile range. Paddles on the steering wheel activate different levels of brake regeneration, with the maximum Level 3 offering for the sort of one-pedal EV driving characteristics that many people (myself included) love. That said, the Soul won't regeneratively brake to a complete stop like some other EVs, though if you press the Auto Hold button on the center console, you can let go of the brake when you're stationary."   Autocar were impressed by the tech: "Adaptive cruise control and lane following afford a useful amount of autonomy in heavy traffic, there’s an extensive suite of electronic safety systems, a head-up display and various features designed to maximise the battery pack. These include cooling and heating the 64kWh battery with liquid rather than air, while a button enables you to control heat or chill only the driver’s portion of the cabin if you’re one-up and need to eke. An in-built heat pump recovers waste heat from the coolant, while driving modes that include Eco and Eco Plus help. If you want one, your chief issue will be the wait – orders for the e-Niro stretch to 2020, and the Soul EV does not go on sale until late this year. But by that time, Kia’s plans to increase production of its EV powertrain may well have been realised."   Steve Fowler at AutoExpress: "We’re big fans of the Soul EV’s bigger brother, the eNiro, so it stands to reason that we’d love the similarly–powered new Soul, too. However, the Soul seems have a more youthful spirit and more character, in keeping with the car’s slightly smaller size and funkier design. And Kia hopes it will be cheaper than the eNiro. A lot can happen between now and when the first cars arrive at the end of the year, but Kia would like it if the first cars could come in at just under £30,000 including the current government EV incentive."   LIGHTNING INTRODUCES THE ALL-NEW $13K STRIKE "After two months of teasing, Lightning Motorcycles has finally lifted the veil off the all-new Strike, its long-range, low-price model." Says Sabrina at RideApart.com: "Lightning announced that the model will be available with three battery options. The entry-level “Strike Standard” receives a 10kWh battery with an estimated range of 70 miles on the highway and 100 miles in the city—this is the model the manufacturer has been announcing at the highly appealing price point of $12,998. The “Strike Mid-Range” is powered by a 15 kWh battery able to power the vehicle on 105 highway miles and 150 city miles. This version of the Strike has been priced at $16,998. Last but not least is the long-range “Strike Carbon Edition” which 20 kWh battery allows the bike to travel up to the much-advertised 200 miles in the city—this version is offered at $19,998. It isn’t the under-$13k price Lightning has been teasing for two months, but it is still a lot more affordable than a number of electric motorcycles currently on the market.Lightning is expected to start rolling the first Strikes out of production in July 2019 in the United States, starting with the top of the line Strike Carbon Edition. The company will announce its plan for international expansion later this year."   https://www.rideapart.com/articles/315837/lightning-strike-electric-motorcycle-launch/   10,000 ELECTRIC CARS REGISTERED IN NORWAY THIS MONTH: HALF ARE TESLA "According to the latest registration data (as of the end of March 28, 2019), new all-electric car registrations in Norway already reached 10,000 for the month (probably including a three-digit number of imported used BEVs). The official results will be announced inthe first days of April, but it’s already certain that we are watching a groundbreaking record of records." Reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "The biggest splash in March was done by Tesla, which reportedly noted 5,000 registrations, including over 4,500 Tesla Model 3. It was just 4,000 recently! With many new compelling plug-in models on the horizon, Norway could be just a year or two from almost entirely switching to electric cars."   https://insideevs.com/10000-bev-registered-norway-half-tesla/   PROGRESSIVE BRAKES ADDED TO MODEL 3 New release notes for Model 3 in Europe: "If you are driving over 50 km/h and brake forcefully, the brake lights will now flash quickly to warn other drivers that your car is rapidly slowing down,” reads the description for Tesla’s Dynamic Brake Lights feature. In addition to flashing the tail lights in situations that call for unexpected heavy braking, the vehicle will also flash its hazard lights. If your car stops completely, the hazard warning lights will flash until you press the accelerator or manually press the hazard warning lights button to turn them off."   PORSCHE TAYCAN ENTERS FINAL TESTING PHASE AHEAD OF SEPTEMBER REVEAL Simon at Teslarati has the lowdown on the final testing stages of the Porsche Taycan: "Porsche engineers are currently taking advantage of the summer in the Southern Hemisphere to test the Taycan’s driving dynamics in warm temperatures. At the same time, teams from the company are also testing the vehicle in Scandinavia, just a few miles away from the Arctic Circle, to evaluate the electric car’s performance in frigid temperatures. Porsche notes that the Taycan’s testing spans 30 countries, in temperatures that range from -35 to 50 degree Celcius (-31F to 122F). Porsche initially plans to start the Taycan’s production at 20,000 units per year, though positive reception from reservation holders have encouraged the company to raise its estimates for the all-electric car’s manufacturing. The Taycan will be capable of sprinting from 0-60 mph in under 3.5 seconds and have a range of over 300 miles on one charge. The all-electric car is designed to support 350 kW charging, making it possible to replenish over 60 miles of range in just 4 minutes."   The most significant facts from the Taycan testing phase:   Overall distance covered: Approximately six million kilometres, of which two million were endurance run kilometres Countries: A total of 30, including the USA, China, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Finland Temperatures: From minus 35 to plus 50 degree Celsius Air humidity: From 20 to 100 per cent Altitude: From 85 metres below to 3,000 metres above sea level Charging cycles: Over 100,000 using various charging technologies across the globe Development team: Around 1,000 test drivers, technicians and engineers   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-tsla-q1-2019-model-3-estimates-excessive-negativity/   EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH FORD’S CHIEF OF ELECTRIFICATION Bradley at InsideEvs.com has been talking to Ford's Ted Cannis. "Cannis confirmed that Ford’s crossover EV will have at least 300 miles of range in E.P.A. testing, but he declined to commit to target numbers for horsepower or acceleration. Cannis said that “most interest from consumers [for EVs] is in performance vehicles.” When asked how Ford is striking the balance between power and driving range, he conveniently replied, “We will not sacrifice either. The company will continue to include hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and pure EV in its electrification portfolio. For regions and specific customers not wanting to go “cold turkey” (as he put it) on combustion, hybrids with and without a plug will serve their needs. Talks with Volkswagen about sharing EV platforms and tech are focused on filling in gaps in overseas markets. “We’re looking at efficiencies around the world so we can get more scale,” he said. Cannis mentioned the impact of local incentives on EV adoption.”   https://insideevs.com/interview-ford-chief-electrification/   NISSAN COMPLETES SALE OF BATTERY BUSINESS TO ENVISION GROUP Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. has completed the previously announced sale of its electric battery operations and production facilities to Envision Group, a world-leading digital energy company. Under the deal, Envision has completed the acquisition of Nissan subsidiary Automotive Energy Supply Corporation and battery manufacturing operations in Smyrna, Tennessee, owned by Nissan North America Inc. (NNA), and in Sunderland, England, owned by Nissan Motor Manufacturing (UK) Ltd. (NMUK).   Envision has also acquired Nissan’s Japanese battery development and production engineering operations located in Oppama, Atsugi and Zama.   The workforce at all facilities covered by the deal will continue to be employed. The headquarters and development centers of the business will remain in Japan.     COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 20th March 2019. TOYOTA AND SUZUKI PARTNER ON HYBRIDS AND EVS Toyota and Suzuki on Wednesday said they planned to produce electric vehicles and compact cars for each other to better compete with fast-changing technologies in the global auto industry." According to Reuters today: "Suzuki will source gasoline hybrid systems for cars it sells worldwide from Toyota, which pioneered hybrid vehicles with the Prius more than 20 years ago, the companies said in a joint statement. The deepening partnership between the two automakers will enable cost-conscious Suzuki to tap into Toyota's R&D firepower to develop lower-emission vehicles and self-driving cars — areas which Suzuki has admitted it is struggling to keep up. The two automakers will deepen their cooperation in India, where Suzuki's hybrid vehicles will be made using engines and batteries locally produced by Toyota. They will also join forces in Europe, where Toyota will produce electric vehicles based on its RAV4 SUV crossover and Corolla wagon for Suzuki, while Suzuki will supply Toyota with gasoline engines for compact vehicle models sold in the region."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/03/20/toyota-suzuki-partner-on-hybrids-evs-building-cars-for-each-o/   HONDA LOGS 15,000 REGISTRATIONS OF INTEREST FOR ELECTRIC E PROTOTYPE "Earlier this month, Honda revealed that so far it received 15,000 registrations of interest for the Honda e Prototype. As the number comes from March 5, we guess it could be significantly higher after the Geneva Motor Show." reports InsideEVs.com today: "If the price is significantly higher than average for its subcompact segment (because of the premium interior and battery cost), we would not expect too high of a volume – especially in late 2019. For comparison, BMW is selling less than 37,000 i3 per year globally after a few years on the market and two range extensions.   co.uk, click Cars and then scroll down to Welcome To The Volt Age. "Say goodbye to the past. The next-generation electric car is coming. The new Honda e Prototype previews Honda’s new electric car, which will be available to reserve early in the summer 2019."   https://insideevs.com/honda-15000-honda-e-prototype/   HYUNDAI, KIA, OLA TO BUILD INDIA-SPECIFIC ELECTRIC VEHICLES "India-based Ola ― one of the world’s largest ride-hailing platforms ― announced a strategic partnership with Hyundai Motor Group focused on smart mobility solutions and electric vehicle development. The agreement will see the Hyundai, Kia and Ola extensively collaborate on developing unique fleet and mobility solutions." "Hyundai Motor Group expects to accelerate its transition from a ‘car manufacturer’ into a ‘Smart Mobility Solutions Provider’, as the partnership’s initiatives will allow it to engage in all aspects across the entire mobility value chain ― including vehicle production, fleet operation and mobility services."   https://electriccarsreport.com/2019/03/hyundai-kia-ola-to-build-india-specific-electric-vehicles/   JAGUAR LAND ROVER INSTALLS UK’S LARGEST WORK CHARGING STATION "Jaguar Land Rover Group has installed at its Gaydon engineering center the UK‘s largest smart charging station for employees. In total, 166 smart charging outlets – each 7 kW AC – are available and connected to the broader NewMotion charging network." Writes Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com today: "In the future, the facility will get even more charging stations in the visitors’ car park for guests. Jaguar Land Rover points out that EV owners, which are able to charge at work (only about 25% of all EV owners), on average are charging at work 40% of the time. At 7 kW, cars like Jaguar I-PACE can replenish up to 176 miles (283 km) of range within an eight-hour shift." JLR said: "The stations are cloud-connected and integrated with the NewMotion public charging network, so employees can charge at stations across Europe using a single card. Users can also monitor and track charging throughout the day with a smartphone app. The charge points will offer both financial and environmental benefits for PHEV and BEV drivers alike, while providing a convenient and sustainable solution for employees who can’t charge at home. Jaguar Land Rover sources 100 per cent renewable electricity – generated from natural resources including solar and wind energy – for its UK facilities, which will be used to power the infrastructure, providing carbon-free commuting to employees. Jaguar Land Rover’s electricity supply is backed by Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO), meaning a proportion of EDF Energy’s renewable energy is ring-fenced for the company. In this case, the REGO scheme certifies that Jaguar Land Rover’s entire supply comes from renewable generation.”   https://insideevs.com/jaguar-land-rover-largest-work-charging-station/   TESLA MODEL 3 STANDARD RANGE VS. NISSAN LEAF PLUS: WHAT YOU GET FOR YOUR MONEY Green Car Reports says: "With the long-awaited release of the base, $35,000 Tesla Model 3 and the more expensive, longer-range Nissan Leaf Plus both arriving this month, the two have now converged—and functionally have more in common than their reputations might suggest." They conclude: "Surprisingly, given Tesla’s reputation for selling high-performance, high-lux machines, Tesla's advantage here is in base cars. If you want all the handy extra features (other than extra range), you can get them for a lot less in the Nissan Leaf Plus SL—especially while Nissan retains its full federal tax credit for the next several months."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1122172_tesla-model-3-standard-range-vs-nissan-leaf-plus-what-you-get-for-your-money   NIKOLA CAN ‘EASILY’ DO ALL-ELECTRIC TRUCKS LIKE TESLA SEMI "New Nikola Motor president Mark Russell recently provided some updates on the company’s efforts to establish its hydrogen refueling stations across the United States, as well as his thoughts about rivals like the Tesla Semi and other hybrid trucks like the modified Kenworth-Toyota T680 long-hauler that debuted at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last January." Reports Teslarati today: "Speaking with trucking publication FreightWaves, Russell explained that the Tesla Semi would not be competing with its long-haul vehicles like the Nikola One, due to the Semi’s limited battery range. The Tesla Semi is offered at 300-mile and 500-mile variants, though Elon Musk has teased that improvements to the vehicle’s design will place the truck’s range closer to 600 miles per charge." Mark Russel said: "“Their truck is our truck with a bigger battery, and we can easily do that. It Nikola’s recent electric vehicle announcement is not as big a deal as people are making it out to be. It’s not a strategy shift. Our model is still attacking the long haul market. We will sell battery electric vehicles based on the same design, and they’ll be great vehicles for those applications. If Tesla can produce their truck and meet the specs, we’ll be competing with them in that market. Tesla doesn’t have anything to compete with us in long-haul"   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-semi-rival-nikola-president-interview/   FORD INVESTS $850 MILLION TO PRODUCE NEXT-GEN ELECTRIC VEHICLES IN THE US And finally we turn to Electrek for news about Ford: "Ford has announced today new investments in its US facilities for future production of next-generation electric vehicles as well as Ford’s first autonomous vehicles. The Ford Mustang-inspired electric SUV...is going to be the automaker’s first real EV next year, but it will be manufactured in Mexico. Now the automaker also wants to bring some EV production to the US and it announced today that it will happen with a $850 million investment through 2023 at its Flat Rock (Mich.) Assembly Plant." Joe Hinrichs, Ford’s president, Global Operations, commented on the announcement: “We’ve taken a fresh look at the growth rates of electrified vehicles and know we need to protect additional production capacity given our accelerated plans for fully electric vehicles. This is good news for the future of southeast Michigan, delivering more good-paying manufacturing jobs.”   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Show #402.   Can You Help Me Fight The Fossils? Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 1st March 2019. Welcome to new Patreon PRODUCER it’s ANTHONY CARROLL from Seattle, and thank you CHARLES HALL for increasing your support.   More on the Tesla news from Tom Randall at Bloomberg: "The top-line performance Model 3 price declined to $58,000 from $60,900. That’s $20,000 cheaper than when it was first released last year. It’s also a bit quicker, going from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.2 seconds and having a top speed of 162 mph. Musk told reporters that making these final price cuts has been “excruciating,” and there will be no future price reductions to the Model 3. He declined to answer a question about the base model’s profitability. Tesla also reintroduced a lower-priced Model S sedan, which now starts at $79,000 with 270 miles of range. There’s also a long-range version starting at $83,000 with a 335-mile range, and a performance version starting at $99,000."   NISSAN REVEALS U.S. PRICING FOR LEAF E-PLUS: COSTS MORE THAN MODEL 3 "Nissan has just revealed U.S. pricing for the 62-kWh version of the LEAF. Unfortunately, pricing seems a bit too high following yesterday’s $35,000 Tesla Model 3 announcement." says Eric Loveday for InsideEVs: "There’s a lot to like with this new LEAF. Its 62-kWh battery provides a range of up to 226 miles. Had it not been for Tesla shocking the world last night with the Model 3 base price announcement, we’d be rather excited for the LEAF. However, all versions of the LEAF e-Plus check in at a higher price than $35,000. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Prices (MSRP) for the 2019 Nissan LEAF PLUS are: LEAF S PLUS $36,550 USD, LEAF SV PLUS $38,510 USD, LEAF SL PLUS $42,550 USD"   Inside EVs Forum user Bloggin: "$35k gets you the standard Model 3, but who wants a Tesla without Autopilot?? Add the $3k and it’s $38k. Want a color other than black and now it’s $39,500. Want wheels other than black, now it’s $41k and well equipped and still below the Leaf SL at $42,550." And user Brian: "Leaf still qualifies for the full tax credit whereas Tesla only gets half. In four more months, Tesla will only get a fourth of the credit. By the time the Leaf loses the credit, Nissan will have put cash on the hood. So the e-Plus will always cost less than even a base Model 3."   https://insideevs.com/nissan-u-s-pricing-leaf-e-plus/   PEUGEOT BRINGS FULLY ELECTRIC STAND TO GENEVA PEUGEOT will be showcasing its new plans for an electric future at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show, unveiling the all-new 100% electric PEUGEOT e-208 alongside the all-new PEUGEOT 208 petrol and diesel variants and hybrid 508 PEUGEOT SPORT ENGINEERED Concept. Joining the new models will be a Plug-in Hybrid range and a revamped electrified version of the iconic PEUGEOT Lion. PEUGEOT will be unveiling the all-new PEUGEOT 208 model, which will be available with a choice of petrol and diesel powertrains along with a zero emission all-electric derivative, the all-new PEUGEOT e-208. Powered by a 100 kW motor, the all-new PEUGEOT e-208 will be the first electric model available from PEUGEOT’s new electric range. The 5-door hatchback features a 50kWh battery, positioned under the floor to maintain interior space, which provides a range of up to 211 miles (WLTP) from a full charge. The all-new PEUGEOT e-208 comes with three driving modes: Eco, to optimise range, Normal, tuned for comfort, and Sport, which puts the emphasis on performance. Customers can choose from a range of charging methods for the all-new PEUGEOT e-208, including 100 kW rapid charging, capable of 80% charge in 30 minutes.   http://www.peugeotpress.co.uk/releases/1726   AUDI STAND AT GENEVA WILL BE EXCLUSIVELY ELECTRICELECTRIC/HYBRID "The Audi stand at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show will be exclusively occupied by electrically powered models, including the world premiere of the Audi Q4 e-tron concept and the European presentation of the Audi e-tron GT concept." according to Robin Whitlock for Renewable Energy Magazine: "In all, a total of four all-electric cars will headline for the brand, all of which will have been rolled out in series production form by the end of 2020. In addition four new plug-in hybrid models will also make their debuts, and the world of Formula E racing will be represented by the latest Audi e-tron FE05 racing car. Deliveries of the Audi e-tron, the first member of this new quartet of electric vehicles, are set to begin soon. The series-production version of its coupé equivalent, the Audi e-tron Sportback, will be introduced later in 2019. Another electric car – the Audi Q2 L e-tron - will be presented in a few weeks in China and will reach its first customers in that market in 2019. Two further series-production debuts will then follow in 2020: the Audi e-tron GT and Audi Q4 e-tron. Concept cars on the stand in Geneva provide a look at these two future models."   https://www.renewableenergymagazine.com/electric_hybrid_vehicles/audi-stand-at-geneva-will-be-exclusively-20190228   SEAT SHOWS VW MEB-BASED EL-BORN EV IN GENEVA "We've already seen spy photos of the production version of Volkswagen's new Golf-sized fully electric car, alternatively referred to as the I.D. or the Neo. As an intent to show that the MEB platform underpinning the Volkswagen will be utilized on other Volkswagen group cars, Seat, the Spanish carmaker, has released images of its own take on the MEB architecture." reports Autoblog: "Volkswagen will bring the I.D. electric hatchback to market first, instead of using Seat to test the waters. But the Seat is hardly a second banana, as its figures are convincing enough: the 62-kWh battery pack gives it a range of 260 miles (on the WLTP cycle), and its 204-horsepower electric powertrain takes it to 62 mph in 7.5 seconds. With 100-kW DC charging, the battery reaches 80-percent capacity in 47 minutes. The VW version's production is slated to begin in November 2019."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/03/01/seat-el-born-ev-vw-meb-geneva/#slide-7533531   JAGUAR I-PACE NAMED UK CAR OF THE YEAR AWARD 2019 The Jaguar I-PACE has emerged victorious at the UK Car of the Year Awards 2019, after a closely fought battle with three other manufacturers. Having been named the Best Executive car when the category winners were announced in February, the Jaguar was pitted against the 11 other triumphant new cars to fight it out for the top honour. The UK Car of the Year Awards judges were quick to praise the attributes of Jaguar’s first electric vehicle. TV presenter Jonny Smith said: “Few traditional manufacturers can match the I-PACE for ground-up groundbreaking design and tech. A wonderful combo of unique design, spirited driving behaviour and useful EV range/rapid charge capability.”   WHY HONDA BOSSES WEREN'T CONVINCED ABOUT THE E PROTOTYPE "The project manager of the Honda e prototype has admitted that the development team had to overcome opposition from company management before the car was confirmed for production." says Autocar: "The retro-styled electric-powered machine, whose styling closely resembles that of the Urban EV prototype, is a compact city car with a range of around 125 miles. Kohei Hitomi said Honda management was not initially convinced by the car's styling, small size and limited range. " He said: "“The positive feedback for the Urban EV concept car was certainly a breakthrough to convince internally that a small-size EV would make sense and be appreciated. I also tried to convince people that an EV is meant to be used in urban conditions, [where] the [small] size of the car is the most important aspect. That's where it makes most sense. From that perspective, the small size is the most important aspect, so that was how we tried to convince people. The concept helped the production car to get approval, and the production car helped the concept to look like what it looked like."   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/why-honda-bosses-werent-convinced-about-e-prototype   KIA TO DISPLAY UPGRADED HYBRID NIRO MODELS AT GENEVA MOTOR SHOW "Kia has announced that refreshed versions of the Niro Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid will be make their public debut at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Both models now come with an exterior design in-line with the all-electric e-Niro, an improved interior finish and new tech features." says Jack Healy for CarKeys: "The South Korean marque has given the Niro hybrid models new front and rear bumpers, redesigned headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED rear lights and new alloy wheel options. Inside, Kia has made significant tech upgrades in the form of the optional 10.25-inch widescreen touchscreen and seven-inch instrument cluster display, which can be fitted instead of the standard eight-inch infotainment screen and 4.2-inch instrument panel. Both versions of the Niro use a 1.6-litre petrol engine that is teamed with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. The Hybrid pairs the combustion engine with a 1.56kWh lithium-ion battery pack, while the PHEV comes with an 8.9kWh unit."   https://www.carkeys.co.uk/news/kia-to-display-upgraded-hybrid-niro-models-at-geneva-motor-show   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Welcome to three new Patreon supporters. Hello to new PRODUCERS PIERRE MARASTI and PAUL COSMAN. And new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER JAMES STORR.   ELECTRIC PEUGEOT e208 IN DETAIL: SPECS, IMAGES, VIDEOS "Peugeot released specs for the e-208, the first all-electric model for the brand, build on the eCMP platform. The public unveiling is scheduled for Geneva, but already today you can enjoy a gallery of stock images." reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "The 50 kWh battery provides 340 km (211 miles) of range under the WLTP test cycle and is covered by warranty for 8 years or 160 000 km for 70% of capacity. The electric motor is rated at 100 kW, which enables it to do 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.1 seconds. The brisk acceleration will be especially welcome in city driving at low speeds. 0-50 km/h takes just 2.8 seconds. There is also a handy three-phase on-board charger rated for 11 kW. The French manufacturer didn’t forget to add a heat pump to save as much range as possible in winter. Orders will be accepted from late summer 2019, while the launch is expected in the fall of 2019.   The tag line is "Unboring the future".   https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=74&v=2LhRl8wcBVE   https://insideevs.com/electric-peugeot-e208-detail-specs-images-videos/   ZERO SR/F ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE UNVEILED "For the past month or so, Zero has been teasing a new addition to its lineup with only a few peeks at the silhouette and limited performance information to work with—teasing well done. The company has finally unveiled the new SR/F and we now know what Zero has been working on: the view from here is pretty nice!" says Sabrina for RideApart.com: "The new SR/F is using the same 14.4 kWh battery used in the high-end S and SR. What has changed is the electric motor—instead of the usual 7-centimeter rotor found in the current Zeros, the F receives a 10-centimeter unit, which results in a performance boost. In fact, both versions of the F (Standard and Premium) are rated at 110 horsepower and a top speed of 124 mph. the standard SR/F is expected to offer a combined range rated between 102 and 123 miles (depending on highway speed). Charging time is expected to hover between 4.5 hours for the entry-level model with 3 kW charger and 1.5 hour with the 6 kW fast charger. Pricing has been set at $18,995 for the Standard version. The Premium trim adds a screen, fast-charger, heated grips, and aluminum bar ends for an extra $2,000. This positions the new SR/F at the top of the line, over $2k above the SR."   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25IkSwclpGA   https://www.rideapart.com/articles/306810/zero-unveils-srf-sport-model/   BYD BREAKS GROUND ON NEW 20 GWH BATTERY PLANT IN CHINA InsideEVs reports: "BYD has broke ground on its new lithium-ion battery factory in Chongqing, one of China‘s traditional auto manufacturing hubs. The planned output is to be 20 GWh annually using eight fully-automated production lines. The first stage of the plant is expected to be completed within a year from now. In 2018 BYD sold about 227,152 plug-in electric cars, and 247,811 including buses/trucks, which means that the company will gain the potential to significantly increase production. And if you consider that in China, sales of plug-in electric cars are booming, then it seems certain BYD will need this extra capacity in the very near future." And Mark Kane has done some handy math: The 20 GWh of batteries is equivalent to:   200,000 all-electric cars with 100 kWh packs 400,000 all-electric cars with 50 kWh packs 800,000 plug-in hybrids cars with 25 kWh packs   https://insideevs.com/byd-new-20-gwh-battery-plant-china/   THE PORSCHE MACAN IS GOING ELECTRIC "The Porsche Macan is Porsche’s best-selling vehicle, powered by an internal-combustion engine, a crossover that handles better than it has any right to. It will also be going electric soon, the Financial Times reports." reports Erik at Jalopnik: "The Porsche decision, which will be revealed next Tuesday by the group, shows the carmaker is serious about selling electric vehicles to a mass market. The all-electric Macan, a sport utility vehicle, will be produced in Leipzig early next decade, the company confirmed to the Financial Times. Chief executive Oliver Blume said Porsche was aiming for every second car it sold to be “electrified” — pure-electric or hybrid — by 2025, meaning that Porsche’s electric ramp-up is even more ambitious than its parent, the Volkswagen Group."   https://jalopnik.com/the-porsche-macan-is-going-electric-1832867432   AUDI LAUNCHES PLUG-IN HYBRID Q5, A6, A7 AND A8 "Audi has revealed new plug-in versions of its Q5, A6, A7 and A8, each combining a turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack. At the same time the marque has chosen to drop the ‘e-tron’ branding from the sole plug-in model it previously sold, and from now on will only apply that badge to its full electric models." reports EVO: "The 50 and 55 variants all share a 14.1kWh battery pack, with estimated electric-only ranges set at around 25 miles on the WLTP cycle. Final UK specifications, pricing and availability have not yet been confirmed, but we suspect they’ll fall in line with Audi’s other numerically ordered models."   https://www.evo.co.uk/news/22328/audi-launches-plug-in-hybrid-q5-a6-a7-and-a8   NEW VERSION OF MORE POWERFUL AUDI E-TRON SPIED: E-TRON ALLROAD? Is there an AllRoad version of the etron currently being tested? New spy photos suggest so. "The rumors suggest that the sportier version will get a three electric motor set up, with two motors on the rear axle. The e-tron currently develops 402bhp front and rear motor together and if you double the rear motors, we would come up to 640bhp in total. Maybe Audi decides not to give the e-tron all that power but a figure around 500-550bhp is clearly possible." says InsideEVs   https://insideevs.com/new-version-audi-e-tron-spied-allroad/   NISSAN LEAF PLUS FIRST DRIVE REVIEW: MORE OF A GOOD THING Jamie at Electrek says: "Last week we were invited to San Diego to drive the new Nissan Leaf Plus, the updated version of the Leaf with a new 62kWh battery pack, which will start sales in March. We spent the day driving it all through the county on a variety of roads, and came away impressed if not surprised by this iteration on an already-solid package. The main practical upshot of the Leaf Plus’s larger battery is that the car has increased range, power and quick charge ability." What about price? "Chevy has reached the 200,000 vehicle mark in the US, and this will effectively raise the price of that car by $3,750 starting in April. This gives Nissan a little breathing room with the Leaf Plus, and if they end up with a price which is a little higher than the Bolt, the effective price for consumers will still be lower.  Nissan has sold around 130,000 electric cars in the US, so they still have time before their credit runs out."   https://electrek.co/2019/02/25/nissan-leaf-plus-62kwh-2/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. In fact, demand abroad is high and is being fulfilled now, so on the U.S. side, a slip was inevitable. Our estimates show that Tesla delivered some 6,500 Mo del 3 to U.S. buyers in January 2019. Yes, that’s down considerably compared to the later months of 2018, but it’s actually way up from the 1,875 sold in the U.S. in January 2018."   As for the LEAF: "How will the announcement of the upcoming 2019 Nissan LEAF Plus (e+) impact Nissan LEAF U.S. deliveries? (LEAF sales are bleak at 717 for January, but this still parallels January 2016 and 2017 figures. It’s not really fair to compare LEAF sales from January 2018.)"   https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-3-sales-u-s-january-2019/   https://insideevs.com/january-2019-u-s-plug-in-ev-sales-report-card/   TOYOTA'S HUGE SALES DIP MARKS A ROUGH START TO 2019 "Toyota is already down 7.1% on North American automobile sales this year, as compared to January 2018, and Lexus isn’t far behind with a 2.8% decrease in volume." reports Jalopnik: "Most of the losses are lead by aging models like the Prius."   https://jalopnik.com/toyotas-huge-sales-dip-marks-a-rough-start-to-2019-1832303081   TESLA’S CCS ADAPTER ENABLES MODEL S AND X TO CHARGE UP 120 KW, WILL NOT BE STANDARD Some confusion around a story over the weekend about Tesla CCS connectors. "Starting this month, Tesla is including a new CCS adapter with all new Model S and Model X orders in Europe so that owners can take advantage of the growing CCS fast-charging networks on the old continent, according to an update on their website." reported Electrek. And then updated their story: "Tesla responded to this story saying that the update on their website was inaccurate. It will not be standard and it’s unclear when it will be available as an accessory." "Tesla has updated its charging connector support page in Europe to show that the new CCS adapter is standard on “all custom order Model S and Model X vehicles from February 1.” Update: Tesla now says that it was a mistake on their part and it will not be standard."   https://electrek.co/2019/02/02/tesla-ccs-adapter-standard-model-s-x-europe/   MERCEDES-BENZ EQV ELECTRIC MINIVAN TO DEBUT IN GENEVA "Mercedes-Benz will unveil an electric MPV concept at this year’s Geneva motor show, previewing a rival machine to the forthcoming Volkswagen ID Buzz." reports Autocar: "Confirmed at the launch of the facelifted V-Class MPV, the Concept EQV is described as a ‘near-series study’ that will likely closely mirror the production version. It's the fifth confirmed vehicle in the German firm’s electric EQ range, following the EQC SUV that launched last year and the forthcoming EQA hatchback, EQB small SUV and EQS luxury saloon. Those models, along with the EQV, are all due to go on sale by 2022. Mercedes-Benz Vans board member Wilfried Porth described the EQV as the firm’s “next big statement” in the class. Mercedes-Benz Vans already offers the electric eVito and will launch the eSprinter later this year. The eVito is based on the architecture of the regular van and is intended as a ‘last-mile’ delivery vehicle suited to urban use. It's powered by three lithium ion batteries with a total capacity of 41.4kWh, connected to a 113bhp, 221lb ft motor, providing a range of around 93 miles."   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/mercedes-benz-eqv-electric-people-carrier-due-geneva   31 COMPANIES JOIN DRIVE TO SWITCH TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES "More than 30 global corporates have now pledged to switch their road fleets to electric vehicles through the EV100 initiative, which has set a target of electrifying two million vehicles by 2030 through its membership." according to Michael Holder for Business Green: "Published today, The Climate Group's first annual report on its EV100 initiative reveals 31 companies with a combined revenue of over $500bn have now made EV commitments as part of the campaign, including high profile names such as BT, IKEA, Unilever, EDF, and Heathrow Airport. The report provides a detailed update on the commitments made by 23 member companies, which have together pledged to switch 145,000 vehicles to electric in 66 markets around the world by 2030. Collectively, the EV commitments from these 23 firms could help to save an estimated 6.6 million metric tonnes of CO2, the equivalent carbon footprint of 1.9 million UK households, according to the report."   https://www.businessgreen.com/bg/news/3070355/ev100-31-companies-join-drive-to-switch-to-electric-vehicles   ELECTRIC VW FOR LESS THAN $22,900 COMING BY 2023-2024 "Michael Jost, Head of Strategy at Volkswagen, said officially that in 2023, or at the latest in 2024, the company will introduce a truly affordable electric car, which will start from less than €20,000 ($22,900). It will be a small car, the size of a T-Roc, which could be described as a compact crossover utility vehicle." reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "“MEB and ID. Family are part of the Volkswagen Group’s electric offensive, for which the company is investing around €30 billion by 2023. By 2025, the Group brands plan to increase the number of their all-electric cars from six today to more than 50. Jost, who is also the head of Group Product Strategy, emphasizes that electric vehicles are by no means synonymous with sacrifice: “We build cool electric cars that are fun to drive, beautifully designed and fully networked.” He notes that starting in 2023, or at the latest in 2024, Volkswagen will launch an electric model, which will be the size of a T-Roc, for less than €20,000.”   https://insideevs.com/electric-vw-cheap-coming-2023/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. This position will provide supervision of day-to-day operations including receiving, stocking, shipping and all transactions related to said activities. The Supervisor, Parts & Service Warehouse, will also ensure efficiency and accuracy of stocking and organizing parts inventory.” reads a job description for Supervisor, Parts Distribution Center.   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-parts-distribution-center-lathrop-ca-video/   TESLA MODEL S AND X GET SOFTWARE LIMITED PACK "Tesla is instead going back to its old model of “software-limited battery pack” – meaning that it is only producing one battery pack for Model S and Model X, the 100 kWh pack, but it is offering two options and one of them is limiting the energy capacity accessible." reports Fred at Electrek: "The company is also moving away from using the energy capacity of its battery packs as part of its naming scheme."   All cars have dual motor AWD, premium interior and sound   Model S Price: $85,000 Range: 310-miles   Model S Extended Range Price: $93,000 (cheaper by $1,000) Range: 335-miles   Model S Performance (no Ludicrous) Price: $112,000 Range: 315-miles 0-60mph: 3.0 sec   Model S Performance (with Ludicrous) Price: $132,000 Range: 315-miles 0-60mph: 2.4 sec   If you want the Extended Range in the future you can pay for it, and they'll unlock it over the air. The car will be sold in 12 states: California, Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Texas, and Washington." Steve Kosowski, the manager of long-range strategy and planning at for Kia Motors America told InsideEVs: "volume is globally constrained because Kia Motors America can’t get the desired allocation from the parent company. “The truth is that demand in other markets around the world is so strong,” he said. Kosowski explained that regulatory pressures, especially in Europe, dictate that countries such as Norway are a higher priority than the United States. “We have this conversation all the time with our leadership about how we need more cars.” And some insight on battery supplier, which I had read as speculation before, but this seems firm confirmation: The all-electric Niro, Kona, and Soul share the same electric powertrain, with some slight modifications in the Niro’s transmission to handle the extra mass. SK Innovation provides the cells for Kia’s battery pack while LG Chem is Hyundai’s supplier."   https://insideevs.com/details-kia-niro-ev-launch/   EV TARIFF COSTS ARE ‘UNCLEAR TO CUSTOMERS’ "Research from Citizens Advice has found that a lack of clear information is making it difficult for electric vehicle (EV) drivers to work out the best electricity tariff to choose to charge their vehicles." reports Utility Week: "It found ten out of the 72 active domestic energy suppliers offer an EV tariff, with the number of such tariffs increasing from two in August 2017 to ten in September last year. Half of the tariffs analysed in the report offer a discount on a home charger or public charge points, however the value of this discount can vary. Interestingly the research highlights that EV-specific tariffs do not necessarily offer the best rates for EV users." In response to the report Fiona Howarth, chief executive of Octopus Electric Vehicles which provides the Octopus Energy Go tariff, said: “This report demonstrates that time of use tariffs are great for EV drivers, and we need to see more of this sort of innovation.   https://utilityweek.co.uk/ev-tariff-costs-unclear-customers/   2019 NISSAN LEAF PLUS GETS LONGER RANGE IN CHEAPEST TRIM "New California regulatory compliance documents hint that lower trim levels of the upcoming 2019 Nissan Leaf Plus will be the ones with the longest range." says Green Car Reports: "To get the maximum range of 226 miles that Nissan estimates, buyers will likely have to stick to the base S trim level, according to documents, based on California emissions tests and obtained by Automotive News. Higher-trim SL and SV models are likely to have shorter range estimates, which Nissan estimates at 215 miles.
