With host retail coach Wendy Batten   https://wendybatten.com/podcast/   Show Notes:  Q4 proves time and again that it is the most stressful quarter of the year for retail shop owners - but it doesn't have to be! Inside this episode of the podcast, I'm encouraging you to CHOOSE JOY: to change your mindset around how you are “supposed” to feel this time of year while running your retail business. Instead of finishing this year strong (as we so often hear), I'm encouraging you to end the year HAPPY.   Topics We'll Cover in This Episode: How your vibe and energy affect how others are feeling in your shop Why you need to reframe your “yeah, but” responses The best way to respond to compliments Reframing your “have to's” and “should's” into “get to's” The power of simply making a decision and moving on Reframing our expectations of our customers and our staff Flipping the script and detaching yourself from bad outcomes Sleeping in and baking cookies… unconventional advice this time of year perhaps? Oh well, I said what I said! Reflecting on what went right   If you are feeling stressed during this time of year in your retail shop, I hope this episode gives you a glimpse into what it might look like if you flipped the script this holiday season and chose joy and happiness over stress and hustle. Dan Levy, the star of Schitt's Creek, loves chefs and wanted to do something to support the culinary community during the pandemic. The result debuts Thursday, Nov. 10th, on HBO Max and it's called The Big Brunch. The show features 10 chef-contestants, all trying to do good in the world while making delicious food, and three judges, Dan, chef and video personality Sohla El-Waylly, and hospitality pro Will Guidara. Dan joins host Kerry Diamond to talk about how The Big Brunch came to be, casting the judges and chefs, and why brunch is his favorite meal. His first novel, “Church of Golf,” tells the story of a washed-up college football hero who reaches middle age and finds himself broke, drunk, lumpy and sucking for air. For him, the way back involves religious devotion to the study of golf. His second novel, “Blood Lily,” was released in July 2021. It tells the story of a Saudi woman - a member of the royal family - whose father coerces her into going to America to run a terrorist cell. She's desperate to escape the network of violent authoritarians who control her life and she yearns for peace and contentment. Naturally, she dreams of life in Maine. Spencer was a Navy brat, born at a U.S. Navy hospital and raised mostly in Annapolis in the shadow of the U.S. Naval Academy. Growing up, he worked at Annapolis' waterfront restaurants as a dishwasher and cook. His father, an academy graduate and nuclear submariner, was lost at sea when Spencer was a boy. A turbulent 10 years followed while Spencer sank into drug use and petty crime. He turned things around when, as a college kid, he discovered a love for reading and books. After college, he enjoyed a career in journalism, writing for daily newspapers and becoming a polished feature and news writer. While in law school, he and his wife founded a small publishing company. He practiced law for 25 years, handling civil lawsuits all over Maryland and in Washington, D.C. He established his own law firm in 2000 and remained head  of the firm for nearly 20 years. When Spencer's not writing, he's enjoying time with his wife or zipping along Maine's country roads on an Italian racing bicycle.   Looking to connect:           Email: spencer@stephensassociates.net Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/churchofgolf Website: spencerstephens.net

Episode 30!  Can't believe we are already here.  Inspiration abounds!  Amy does a deep dive on Chef Erin French, who despite some pretty major setbacks, she fought to get her son and her restaurant back only to become a world-renowned dinner destination that gets so many reservation requests, she has to hold a lottery.  Then there is Tiquette Bramlett and Vidon Vineyards.  Tiquette is the first black vineyard president in a major U.S. vineyard region.  Tiquette is planning on bringing more diversity to the wine industry and education about winemaking for everyone.  Teresa finishes up with a little bit about the history of AA and the twelve-step programs that have helped thousands of people escape addiction.  #30 is a great episode and you don't want to miss out.We would love to hear from you.  Send us your comments or even your own inspirational stories at tangentialinspiration@gmail.com or give us your comments on our website, TangentialInspiration.com.Follow us on our social media:Website: https://tangentialinspiration.com/Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/tangentialinspiration/Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/pages/category/Podcast/Tangential-Inspiration-110449931124565/Twitter: https://twitter.com/TangentialInsp1

Hi from the UK! I’ve been listening to your podcast for years – I love it. You’re both awesome! I’ve been playing a lot of the video game Ghosts of Tsushima recently and I’d love some recommendations for books set in Japan to complement it! I like historical fiction, literary fiction, fantasy, sci-fi (I’ll pretty much try anything). I have Pachinko on my list. Bonus points for Samurai.  -Charlotte 3. My wife and I just had a baby on Valentine’s Day. We are white, Christian, and a LGBT family. We want our daughter to have as much diversity as possible. We have the little leaders and dream big series along with plenty of feminist books. We need some picture books about transgender kids, Muslim (or other religions) children, and children of different races/cultures. What are your favorite picture books for us to add to her library? Thank you! -Jessica 4. Could you recommend a fantasy or sci-fi read-alike for The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison? The things I like most about it are the fantasy elements, the fact that the main character is a person in power who leads responsibly because he’s genuinely a good, empathetic person, and the way that the protagonist learns to assert and value himself slowly throughout the book. Either way, thanks for your time! I appreciate you and your work! -Laura 5. I have been enjoying getting into some more door-stopper sized books this year and was hoping you could help me find some more. Specifically, I’d love an adult fantasy novel with a female lead (preferably written by a woman) maybe with a little steaminess. I generally really enjoy fantasy which doesn’t operate within the standard Tolkein-esque genre, but has its own twist and interesting world building. I read Kushiel’s Dart and that’s almost what I was looking for but I just couldn’t get past all the questionable consent stuff…. I don’t think I’ll be reading the rest of the series. Some fantasy books I have loved (not all door-stoppers) include the Broken Earth trilogy, the Abhorsen trilogy, Gideon the Ninth, Lies of Locke Lamora, and Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. A friend recently got me into the Wheel of Time series as well, which is fun but with a much more male-centric, standard fantasy feel. I do like when sci-fi elements are thrown into a fantasy world (such as with Gideon), but would prefer it to lean more into the fantasy side of things (already have some good sci-fi ones on my shelf). Generally not a huge fan of time travel or robots (excepting Murderbot). Please no sexual violence. I look forward to your recommendations. Thanks! -April 6. Hi! About a year ago, I finally told my husband (and admitted to myself) that I’m bisexual. I hadn’t told anyone else because, well, I’m happily married and it’s not like I’m looking to date. And then, just a couple weeks ago I found out that my best friend of over 30 years is also bisexual! I would love a rec for a book she and I could read about bi women, preferably not a coming of age kind of book, but about grown women who are who they are but also bi. Any genre is good – we are both voracious readers. Thanks! -Jaimie 7. I want to find a fantasy book with the main characters as not human. Like wings of fire. I would love adventure and stuff -Samantha Books Discussed Spinster by Kate Bolick Finding Freedom by Erin French (cw: addiction, domestic abuse, harm to animals) Shinju by Laura Joh Rowland Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba, Vol. 1 by Koyoharu Gotouge with John Werry (Translator), Stan!, Adam Grano, Mike Montesa, John Hunt (cw: harm to children, mostly off-screen) Julian is a Mermaid by Jessica Love When Aidan Became A Brother by Kyle Lukoff, Kaylani Juanita The Queen’s Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner The Unspoken Name by AK Larkwood A Darker Shade of Magic by VE Schwab Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse (cw: harm to children, graphic violence) Kushiel’s Dart by Jacqueline Carey (tw: rape, harm to children) The Last Place You Look by Kristen Lepionka (Roxane Weary #1) (cw: violence against women and minors including rape, kidnapping, imprisonment) The Deep by Rivers Solomon (tw: slavery) Hollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton (narrated by a crow and also a cow and a polar bear, dogs and cats and sparrows) See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ellen and Heidi talk to Mary and Nina.  Mary has two established and successful businesses- one in the healing arts and the other teaching people to bake bread. She is grappling whether to just put her focus on the sourdough business, even though she feels the sadness of having to leave the medical practice behind. Nina is a dynamic 18-year-old with lots of ideas and dreams, specifically about teaching writing and/or music.  She also wonders about her tendency to start lots of projects and not finish them and asks if it is better to go with her natural multi-tasking tendencies or whether to train herself to do one task at a time to successful completion.  We also talk about the documentaries ‘Knock Down the House' and ‘Nothing Fancy' as well as Erin French's new book ‘Finding Freedom'
