Since then, thousands of civilians and military personnel have been killed, cities have been turned to rubble and essential infrastructure has been destroyed. Millions of Ukrainians have been displaced and had their lives upended. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, 15 journalists were killed in Ukraine in 2022, and the situation for news media remains incredibly challenging to say the least. Olga Tokariuk, an independent journalist, is a fellow at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism in Oxford, England and a non-resident fellow at CEPA (Center for European Policy Analysis). Her professional interests include international relations and disinformation research. She details how resilient the Ukrainian people and military have been in confronting a more powerful Russian military. The former Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin tried to destroy the identity of Ukraine; much the same way Putin is. Putin felt emboldened to invade Ukraine because he received no repercussions for his aggressive behavior in Chechnya, Georgia and the Crimean Peninsula. Major efforts should focus on continuing sanctions and aid, and combatting the propaganda campaign by Putin to use a myriad of disinformation techniques, such as humor, to undermine Ukrainian resistance and Western resolve. The incoming Republican House of Representatives' leaders have indicated that the US aid will be reduced and there will not be a “blank check” to confront Russian aggression, although no “blank check” currently exists.

Also, Tokariuk uncovers how Russian disinformation infiltrates Western media sources and attempts underway to influence future elections in democracies.

What's treason in Ukraine today? The case against Viktor Medvedchuk

Save Meduza!https://support.meduza.io/enOn May 13, a Ukrainian court placed pro-Kremlin oligarch and lawmaker Viktor Medvedchuk under round-the-clock house arrest pending trial for high treason. The country's Prosecutor General had signed off on the charges two days earlier, indicting not only Medvedchuk, but also his closest ally and fellow lawmaker, Taras Kozak, in connection with three episodes of illegal activity.  Both politicians belong to Opposition Platform — For Life, a pro-Russian opposition party that holds 44 seats in the Ukrainian parliament. But Medvedchuk is perhaps best known for his murky business dealings and personal ties to Vladimir Putin (the Russian president is said to be the godfather of Medvedchuk's youngest daughter).  The treason charges came a few months after the Ukrainian authorities imposed sanctions on Kozak and Medvedchuk for allegedly financing terrorism. As part of these sanctions, Kozak's three pro-Russian television channels were taken off the air. The Ukrainian authorities also sanctioned Medvedchuk's wife and froze the couples' assets for three years. Medvedchuk has denied all of the allegations, claiming that the charges are politically motivated. That said, prosecuting Medvedchuk coincides with other steps the Ukrainian government is taking to combat corruption and oligarchic influence. Moreover, this is happening at a time when President Volodymyr Zelensky appears to be changing his stance on Russia and his approach to resolving the conflict with Russian-backed separatists in Ukraine's east.  To discuss Viktor Medvedchuk's Kremlin ties and his place in the Ukrainian political landscape, as well as what the Zelensky government is doing to combat oligarchic influence in Ukraine, “The Naked Pravda” turned to independent journalist and disinformation researcher Olga Tokariuk, a freelance correspondent in Kyiv for the Spanish EFE news agency. “The Naked Pravda” comes out on Saturdays (or sometimes Fridays). This week on Black Diplomats we’ve got a new format and new guests, but have faith - we’re still taking aim at white supremacist imperialism, and there’s nothing new about that. We’re all about giving platform to people who don’t get invited into mainstream media, and we’ve done a great job of it. We also want to broaden the foreign policy conversation by bringing in new audiences. One of the barriers for a lot of folks is basic context and geography, so we’re going to start filling in some blanks. Host Terrell Starr will be opening the show with news highlights and a little context for the interview, including his personal stories, racial analysis, policy expertise, and historical information. These bite-sized segments help make sense out of the news and cut through the propaganda. Our guests segments will be a little shorter, but we still won’t be talking to any Ukrainian ‘elites’! Journalist and filmmaker Olga Tokariuk brings us the perspective from Kyiv, where there isn’t any evidence of panic, or any surprise at Putin’s bluster. Eilish Hart is a journalist and researcher who writes about the former Soviet Union. She’s been keeping a keen eye on Alexei Navalny, and joins us to explain his recent hunger strike that ended on April 23. We hope you enjoy the new format! Thank you for listening!
