Per Palmgren is Associate Professor in Medical Education at Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden where he is the director of doctoral studies at the Department of Learning, Informatics, Management and Ethics. In addition to his work as an academic, Per is an award-winning ballroom dancer who has represented his country many times. He also teaches and adjudicates in dance competitions. Jared is the host of their College Fantasy Football podcast, Chasing the Natty: A College Fantasy Football Podcast. Together they look through the microscope of CFF analysis to determine which prospects that did not get an NFL combine invite may have a shot in the big leagues at the NFL level. Majority of the prospects discussed are long shots and will most likely become undrafted free agents at best going into the 2023 pre-season. Lana Lokteff is part of the indie media website known as Red Ice, where she co-hosts Red Ice TV Live and Weekend Warrior with her husband and Red Ice founder Henrik Palmgren. She is also the host of the interview show Radio 3Fourteen, another Red Ice production. Besides creating articles and videos for Red Ice, Lokteff also owns her own organic clothing line called Lana's Llama. The Oregon native is passionate about health, European identity politics, and ancestral traditions, of which hers are Slavic. How can we imagine a sustainable and resilient city of the twenty-first century? What can the role of designers be in addressing Agenda 2030, including urgent and interconnected problems such as rapid urbanization, biodiversity loss, social inequity and severe global climate changes affecting our cities? Drawing on the nexus of ideas within landscape/ecological urbanism, resilience theory, and the environmental humanities, the studio challenges the modernist idea of the city as a fixed, delimited territory contrasting the ‘natural’ world around us. Instead, we explore landscape and ecology as organizers of urban space; as providers of catalytic urban strategies that can embrace complexity, multi-functionality and change over time. More about the focus of this studio during spring 2021.MASSES AND WATER In the spring of 2021, the studio is part of an ongoing research project called MASSA. It is financed by a four-year state grant trough Formas and is a collaboration between the City of Stockholm, KTH, Gaia Arkitektur and Studio ErixonAalto. They investigate how millions of tons of stone generated during the expansion of Stockholm’s subway can be the catalyst for new resilient urban environments. Historically, land rise and the conjunction of fresh water and saltwater is the raison d’être of Stockholm. Considering the effects of climate change, such as rising sea levels and increased water flows—as well as the rapid growth of Stockholm— the studio sees the opportunity to take a holistic approach to the potential that 7 million tons of rock brings. The challenges are severe: The Baltic ecosystem is collapsing and by 2050, the sea level rise is estimated to exceed the land rise. In 2100 Lake Mälaren could once again become part of the Baltic Sea and the city would lose its drinking water supply. The studio will work with a number of sites where the stone residue can be used as a resource in relation to the blue wedges in Stockholm and urban development.TEACHING METHODOLOGY AND ASSIGNMENTS The teachers and the studio aim at empowering students to develop a critical and systematic outlook to the urban and global problems we face though the study of hands-on, “live” problems grounded in realworld challenges. Urban design is an inclusive, reflective and, by necessity, transdisciplinary practice and students worked closely with decision makers, activists, local organizations, and experts. Learning from history, Students studied how forces of nature, culture and infrastructure have shaped city life. Valfrid Palmgren satte stilen för hur våra bibliotek ser ut och fungerar. För många är hon ett okänt namn, men i bibliotekskretsar kallas hon "folkbibliotekens hjälte". Det är Valfrid Palmgren som man i mångt och mycket kan tacka för att vi i Sverige har folkbibliotek där alla gratis kan låna böcker, läsa tidningar och ta del av föredrag. Hon var känd för sin energi och charm och tycktes inte bekymras nämnvärt av det faktum att hon ofta var den första, eller enda, kvinnan i olika sammanhang. Hon blev tex 1905 den första kvinnan att anställas vid Kungliga Biblioteket i Stockholm och 1910 en av de första kvinnorna att väljas in till Stockholms Stadsfullmäktige, för högerpartiet Allmänna valmansförbundet. Som specialist på just biblioteksfrågor fick hon i uppdrag att utreda hur biblioteken kunde förbättras och hennes slutsatser lade grunden för dagens svenska biblioteksverksamhet. 1928, efter ett ihärdigt propagerande från Valfrid Palmgren, slog dörrarna till Stockholms Stadsbibliotek upp. Vi tittar närmare på den spektakulära byggnaden som idag är en av de mest kända i huvudstadens siluett. Vi fördjupar oss också i bibliotekariestereotyperna med den amerikanska bibliotekarien Ruth Kneale, som i sin bok You Don't Look Like a Librarian gjorde upp med föreställningarna om sitt skrå. Och så pratar vi med Elise By Olsen, initiativtagare till International Library of Fashion Research ett internationellt modebiblioteket som lanserades i höstas. Det ska bli ett både digitalt och fysiskt bibliotek, med säte i Oslo. Här ska modevärldens tryckta material samlas, bevaras och arkiveras. Tanken är att biblioteket ska bli världens mest omfattande arkiv för samtida modepublikationer och specialiserad forskning.
