In today's episode, I spoke with Barbara Oakley about her work on pathological altruism and the dark side of empathy. Our discussion began by delving into Barbara's unique background and experiences, gaining valuable insights into her journey. As the conversation unfolded, we addressed society's blindspot for pathological altruism, unraveling the Christian roots at the heart of our assumption that empathy for the weak and victimized is always good. The darker facets of empathy took center stage as we explored its potential for destructiveness in contexts such as codependency and abusive relationships. Our exploration extended to the cultural nuances surrounding altruism, shedding light on how its definition can significantly vary across diverse societies. A focal point of our conversation was the vulnerability of highly agreeable individuals, particularly women, and their susceptibility to the influence of narcissistic personalities. We examined the potential harm in advising highly agreeable individuals to be more empathetic, since such a message can have a reinforcing effect on their self-sacrificing tendencies. Instead, agreeable people should be taught and encouraged to create healthy boundaries between themselves and others - boundaries that allow them to empathize with others without overidentifying and becoming consumed by others' feelings. We explored how Simon Baron Cohen's 'Empathizing - Systemizing' spectrum can be used to understand the characteristics of a hyper-empathizing brain type. Our conversation extended to the influence of universities on ideologies, where we explored the promotion of Marxism, victimhood, and a pressure to conform to a perception of niceness. We also mentioned the overemphasis on teamwork in universities and its potential exploitation to the detriment of individual growth. Lastly, we visited Ayn Rand's important work in warning the world of the dangers of socialism and misplaced altruism. Barbara shared some surprising facts about Ayn Rand's individualistic personality, which no doubt gave her the strength to speak out against the Soviet Union. We explored Ayn Rand's idea of selfishness and how a more expansive definition of the self can be used to integrate her philosophy with values such as relationships, family, and community. I hope you enjoy this episode. Do let me know what you think about the dark side of empathy and agreeableness. Can you relate? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
We're taught from a young age to always share and be kind, but Dr. Scott Kaufman thinks that's not always the right thing to do. His new research looks at the idea of ‘healthy selfishness' – taking care of yourself before focusing on helping others. He discusses the different forms of selfishness and why setting boundaries can be the best way to grow a relationship. For more than 40 years in the early 20th century, Martin Couney ran a sideshow in which premature babies were displayed in incubators. With this odd practice he offered a valuable service in an era when many hospitals couldn't. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll describe Couney's unusual enterprise, which earned both criticism and praise. We'll also marvel over an Amazonian survival and puzzle over a pleasing refusal. Intro: The inventor of the Dewey Decimal System suggested that GHEAUGHTEIGHPTOUGH might spell potato. Waste no more time arguing what a good man should be. Be one.” – Marcus AureliusIn the Western tradition of civilization, the chief hallmark is that of individual autonomy, meaning each free individual within that most successful of all tribes can speak their mind freely, and live as they see fit for themselves and their families! Throughout the vast majority of history, from culture after culture, tribe after tribe- the norm has been a KING. An elite person, surrounded by other elites he has chosen, that rule over everyone else. Endless gradations of slaves, that do as they are told. Privileged slaves, who have trappings of wealth, above another level of slaves, and so on, down the line…But ultimately, in this ancestral world order of humankind, the vast majority have been simply slaves that did as they were told- or else!Western civilization, in counterpoint, has been quite different from this. Since ancient Greece, to Rome, and then through the middle ages up to the American revolution, the thrust has been that each tribe, and each man, and then woman and families within that civilization were free to determine their own fates. As long as they obeyed the overall, agreed upon notions of law and order, and civility, each tribe within that Western Nation was free to live and raise their families as they saw fit. They were free to do what was best for themselves, under their God(s) and notions of fair play and what was best. This worked very well indeed, for thousands of years- Western civilization, and the way of life it offered, with religious freedom, freedom of scientific inquiry, and individual autonomy thrived against the ancient, pervasive doctrine of top-down, rule of the ELITE. It was a rule of equals, from the bottom up, where those who were promoted to a higher level were put there by the people themselves, to represent their wishes. A REPUBLIC!As always happens, as in Rome, the Republic was put aside, and an emperor, or king thrust his way to power! The Power of the King, and his elite became paramount, and the people suffered. Once again, they were reduced to what was effectively slaves, being fed bread and circuses, welfare and entertainments, to distract them from the actual land and rights that they had been deprived of via taxation and fiat ruling. Top down government once again reared its ugly head.Until the ruling elites fell through their own depravity. This was the Swamp of long ago! Now, in the US and in the EU, we are again being attacked by a modern Swamp- a Globalist agenda, one that threatens each and every nation state, tribe, family and individual within the Western civilization that our ancestors have built for us!We now are being told that we must take in immigrants from outside of our own painstakingly constructed culture- not only ‘take in’, but support and replace ourselves with. Invaders, in essence. The European Union is transporting thousands and thousands of low IQ, incompatible people from the 3rd world into our countries, skyrocketing crime and violence. Dumbing down our schools, and endlessly trying to destroy the very civilization that they have escaped to from their own horrendous pre-civilized cultures. And NO ONE HERE vote for ANY of this! In the US, the same thing has been happening. People from alien, hostile tribes, with evil gods and evil cultures are being put amongst us, supported by our own elites, for their own ends of low labor rates, and the votes they know they will gain from these people who vote only for government welfare and circuse
We live nowadays in a highly complex, interdependant Western civilization. This means that every person within that complex TRIBE needs to pull their own weight, and MORE!Only by such action have we built this amazing edifice where machinery works, where our huge cities used to work (more on that later), and science and progress continues onward, unabated. It is by adult men, primarily, realizing that their purpose in life is to work hard to assist others, and to stop those other men who do not do so. Those parasites who are a threat and a drain, rather than an asset. We have reached a point in our Western civilization, laboriously reared up by our European ancestors over thousands of years, where many of our own people, and unfortunately many many more not of our own people, who have been imported, scream on and on about rights! Of course, rights are important, like free speech and freedom of autonomy and action, and the rights to bear arms. But now, the shrill cadence screaming they want rights are mainly speaking of gaining free stuff! Affirmative action- reparations- welfare and more and more and more, endlessly- free stuff. Meaning the products of Western Civilization that Western science has produced, along with endless labor of Western men over many, many generations- the cry is to simply “Give it to us! We cannot build it, we won’t build it- but it is our RIGHT!”Cultures that have lazed about for millenia, who are from warm climes that have no requirement, really, for hard work, preparations to survive harsh winters; who live in the moment, with not eye to the future- they are not prepared or ready for any real advanced, western notion of responsibility. But, they do know what they want, which is everything WE have produced! Our young men have reached a point where they don’t feel a sense of purpose. They are reviled as having ‘white privilege’, which is utter nonsense. They are also hated as racists, when any younger white person has been browbeat and indoctrinated to the point where they spend most of their time introspectively self-examining themselves to expunge any tiny racist urge they think they might have, since they are constantly harangued about their evil natures!Well, I am here to tell you young men of America and Europe- you have done NOTHING WRONG! You are simply the inheritors of a wondrous culture and civilization, a place that has been created by your ancestors. Your Ancestors have built a civilization that is the penultimate creation of mankind- Western Civilization! Nothing else in all of the history of mankind even comes close. From the ancient Scythian and Germanic tribes, to ancient Greece and Rome, and then to the Enlightenment of Europe- from Homer and Shakespeare to Dickens and then to the Founding Fathers- no other culture even comes close, in ALL of history! European civilization is even aped by every other culture in the world, today. Chinese, African, South American- whatever you can name, the leaders in those places copy European dress, manners, and ways as much as they can. They will never admit it, but they know our culture is dominant, and more- it is the BEST.But what we have forgotten is this: that it is all because of each man in the culture, for thousands of years, has assumer RESPONSIBILITY! The responsibility of supporting his family; and more- of enforcing law and order within his tribe and community. Of being a George Bailey against a sea of royal Mr. Potters- standing up for what is right. &n
In this era of Globlaism and the idea that ‘we are all the same’, the realism of the ancestral lifestyle shows us how inaccurate such ideas really are. Our ethnic differences, in other words are true diversity in the type of human that we are defines us. If you are of European descent, for instance, or white Caucasion, you are a part of what is the smallest ethnic tribe on earth, and shrinking. Our birthrate is below replacement level, and growing smaller. The white ethnic tribe is gettling ever smaller in numbers, despite controlling large areas of the world’s land mass. Asians are the largest ethnic group, but their numbers are finally getting under control, due to strict birth control and planning. The numbers of East Indians, blacks, and other mixed races are exploding far beyond carrying capacity in their native lands, with no slowing in sight! Why do I bring this up? Well, humans are tribal by their very nature. We thrive in homogenous tribes, amongst others with like minds, values, histories, and above all DNA. We resemble one another greatly, a single tribe of one ethnicity is very like a group of close relatives, of 2nd, 3rd and 4th cousins if you will. In such a group, we are happiest and healthiest, with crime almost unheard of (for who would rob his relations?) , and with a common purpose and will. In such a tribe, to take advantage of others really makes no sense, and is always strictly punished and stopped. Such a tribe would thrive on similar foodstuffs, and would agree on what was a proper way to live in terms of land usage, ethics, religion- in fact, in all particulars of life! This is how the world was divided, since time began: the races were deemed ‘separate but equal’. Or, at least that being among others of your own was the most natural and desirable state. But now, now that we know of scientific racial differences, we have many deniers, who insist we are all the same. We are not; some races are faster runners, some are stronger with thicker bones, and some are just smarter on average. There is no serious counterargument here- it is a scientific fact. As if a marked difference in temperaments, with some being far more violent than others. This is just like the paleo realization that evolution made us to thrive on certain foods, like grass fed meat, and green plants in preference to grains and sugars. Another scientific fact that is ignored and ridiculed by most of the population, because the so-called experts told them it was untrue. But the paleo people are those that listened to real science, and figured out the truth! We also hearkened to our evolutionary past, and realized that sleeping in blacked out rooms like our ancestral caves for at least 8 hours per night, and rising at dawn was also what we have evolved to do, along with exercising regularly, briefly and intensely (thus mimicking our ancestors actions of hunting and gathering) - why, this made us healthy, happy, and disease free! We learned to ignore the so-called scientific imposters who told us to eat low fat, limit our calories; all while eating GMO grains sprayed with glyphosate and putting fluoride in our water would make us so healthy that we could look forward to a future of stents in our veins and autoimmune diseases that were caused by “no reason we know of”… What a crock! So here we are- we are on board with our evolutionary paleo persona, how to eat and live and exercise and sleep to be our very best. Many of us have learned that a rural type of environment is far preferable for our genotype to thrive, and spend ample time in nature, away from toxi

As a matter of fact, most people choose to self-segregate. This is both blacks, and whites. I’m sure it is also as true amongst other races, but there is no more stark contrast in the USA as that between those two most opposite races as black and white. This is despite the fact that these races have dwelt together in north America for hundreds of years! What can be the problem, after all of this time??Let’s go back to Paleo 101: mankind is an evolved creature. This is the foundation of why things like neolithic grains and other foodstuffs are so problematic for our health. We didn’t evolve to eat grasses; we evolved to eat primarily meat, and bugs; other protein sources and small tubers and tiny, ancient fruits with little sugar at all. This is how we evolved, and such foods give us maximum health: along with living in a state where we get maximum sunlight throughout the day, and adequate exercise as we forage and hunt with primitive weapons, barefoot and using our musculature to drag heavy loads, and do other such work that conforms to our ancestral template, forged over millenia. After a night of sound sleep, we would wake amidst our tribe, feeling fulfilled and ready to begin another day, forging the destiny of our own people. This is our true history, and the closer we can remain to this ancient format, the healthier and better off we all are! Tribally, ancestrally, and PALEOLITHICALLY. This is our true selves, with stories told at night, archetypal stories of our culture, and our ancestors; stories that reverberated within us both in our dreams, and throughout our waking hours. Our tribe was all about us, with members closely resembling us and our forebears: folk whose DNA was very close to those of our own family and ancestry, whose thoughts and aspirations could be reliably known to be very close to our own! This was all very natural, and healthy overall.Nowadays, however, we are supposed to pretend, (just as we are supposed to pretend via standard medical protocol), that not only is a low fat, low sodium diet wonderful and proper, along with endless drug prescriptions, prodecures and side effects-but in addition, all races and people are identical, replaceable, and that we should welcome the diversity of all races, creeds, and colors to live within our countries and neighborhoods- and even be happy to pay for it all via our tax dollars through the all-encompassing world-welfare state! As I foreshadowed earlier: I live in what is, in effect, a virtual ethnostate. The vast preponderance of my neighbors and fellow townspeople are all of white, European ethnicity; mainly hereabouts of Norwegian and German ethnicity. And everything works wonderfully!Crime is very, very low. Courtesy is wonderful whether in store or in the streets; neighbors are quick to help one another, and government has nothing to do with it. You could dismantle the sherrif’s department in my town, and no one would notice any difference to months. Almost every local citizen is armed, and prepared to defend themselves and their neighbors! (And everyone else knows it)!All is well and good, until Big Liberal Government steps in. “Things are not fair”, they say. You don’t have enough “ethnic diversity”. The agenda becomes to force other races and cultures within our midst. You are not usually allowed to say it, but blacks, in particular, have vastly higher crime rates than whites, or any other race. VASTLY. Hugely. OVERWHELMINGLY! They are just this way; there is no gainsaying it, it is just

I am dismayed by how misled the people of modern Western civilization have become! Not only do they eat fake, food-like substances (as recommended by ‘science’) like low fat dairy, rancid industrial seed oils (ala vegetable oils and margarine), and grain fed meat: They also hate ‘evil firearms’, since the Big Government has told them that they are- completely evil! They’re not. Guns are simply tools, like electric drills, my tractor, and chainsaw- things that woud have been highly prized throughout all times and places, because they represent and embody power. The power to stop crime, injustice, attack and real evil. To protect our families and neighbors, to stop invaders from hostile tribes. And, most importantly- to thwart the deprecations of our OWN governments, when they have become too dominant and evil to be stopped by negotiations and reason! Trust me, if a tribal leader back in paleolithic times decided to attack his own tribespeople, he would have met a spear versus the spear of his own! A real Man of any era, who renders himself weaponless- has also rendered himself castrated.A Non-Man who is unwilling to defend his own!And so-called man, or woman too, who acquieces in being utterly defenseless against any attackers, whether from within the government or without- is no longer an individual at all! They are a form of slave. Voluntary or not, they have effectively made themselves a slave. If the Master makes an unreasonable demand of them or their family or friends: they have no recourse. They have made themselves into voluntary eunachs. Powerless, and utterly dependent and at the whim of their rulers, whether real political rulers, or lawless bandits, rapists, and murderers. This it the bottom line. Dispossessed of weapons, when all about you (like your own government) possess them, makes you a complete, helpless, cringing victim. You have now no recourse, no ability to even protect yourself; you are pathetic. And make no mistake: those about you will take advantage! It is human nature, just as it is to hunt and gather for our tribe- those who deny true human nature will suffer the ultimate price. And the consequences shall be the:Utter demolishment and elimination of their people and their tribe! This is nature’s law- survival of the fittest. If you feel guilty because of your people’s success, or suicidally compassionate about our rivals on the globe’s failures- they will destroy you. That is just the way Nature works! You don’t want to fight, you don’t want to ensure your own survival, because that ‘just isn’t right’- well, welcome to the dustbin of history.Look at modern Europe, welcoming in migrants who are their hereditary enemies, or just low IQ invaders- and then paying them to stay! These are people of decadence, who have been civilized for so long that they have forgotten the very rules of life and survival- rules known instinctively by every lower species on the face of the earth- Eat or be Eaten! So now you know- Get a Gun. Stop Immigration. And be a Paleo Tribesperson, not a cringing, decadent Roman in the last days of their failing empire!!
When I read of this recently, I was more than repelled- I was outraged! As I’ve said before: if you destroy your own history- that which makes you and your peoples unique- you are committing cultural and racial suicide. Amazingly, strangely, and disgustingly- this is what Western Europe is doing currently. They have allowed, no- encouraged- the mass immigration and invasion of their sovereign countries by low IQ invaders from the Muslim world, and Africa! My only explanation of just as to why they would do such a thing- (It would never happen in those countries and regions that they would not only allow such an invastion of Whites into their countries- but to actually pay them to come over and destroy them??!!) Who could ever be this stupid?Well, apparently the SWEDES are: Only Marxism/Liberalism could ever explain such a travesty. This is all about power for global elitists, and nothing about actual benefit for the people who are living in their own country- that country that was built by their ancestors for them: their descendents! I mean, don’t we all want to build, and leave a better country and life for our progeny? Isn’t that what the advance of Western Civilization has been about for millenia?Long ago, the ancient people who wanted better for themselves and their children, left Africa. They ventured forth into a much harsher, northern environment, determined to survive and thrive. Meanwhile, those they had left behind in Africa, just- languished, and kind of just stayed the same: they just hunted, lived in the moment, and evolved physically, rather than mentally. In Mother Africa, to survive, and breed was enough! To hunt, to gather- and then do the same again tomorrow, day after day- that was the ancient lesson. And breed- survival meant the species survival, not the individual! And so it has been there, since time immemorial…But, for those who left- the adventurous, enterprising ones: they had chosen adversity! A harsh climate, with which they must contend, for mere survival. These folk trudged northwards, into lands of ice and snow, determined to carve out a future in uncrowded, although harsh lands. There, they met up with the Neanderthals, who actually had larger brain capacity than the homosapiens from Africa. They interbred, and ultimately not only increased their intellect thereby, but also made them more able to deal with the northern lands, by lightening their skin, (for increased vitamin D creation), and also lightening their hair and eye color. These folk, our European ancestors, made us able to cope with the harsh northern latitudes. And now: evolution happened! Our ancestors moved further and further from our ancestral, basically stuck-in-time, low IQ roots. We started to create real civilizations! Cooperative, altruistic tribes that knew they could only survive in the increasingly harsh climes of the north by working together. For the Ice Ages were beginning, back then in the infancy of our racial growth and eventual dominance. Our ever-inventive ancestors, working together, learned, evolved, and forged themselves into a group of people that were not only capable of surviving a complete Ice Age: but were able to evolve as they did so into a people of sophisticated weaponry, where they could kill giant woolly mammoths to survive, using cunningly contrived flint blades and spears.&a

Barb Oakley may be a Professor of Engineering now but all through high school she was a self-professed math hater. She got a D in geometry…twice. She far preferred to follow her passions for literature and languages than waste her time doing something that seemed worthless. After joining the army, learning fluent Russian and getting a degree in it, she was assigned to work as a communications officer and found herself suddenly surrounded by engineers. She realized that unless she made a serious course correction her opportunities in life were going to be severely limited. So, she decided to follow her non-passion and master mathematics. In her latest book, A Mind for Numbers: How to Excel at Mathematics (even if you flunked Algebra), Barb (as she insists we all call her) lays out the simple techniques that she, top teachers and students have used and that you can use too to master mathematics…or anything. What makes Barb’s latest book so interesting is how it fits in with her previous books. While this book heavily explores the individual’s power to determine what their brains become, previous books like Evil Genes and Pathological Altruism explore the parts of human nature that are hard-wired within us. In this interview, we further explore the relation of Nature + Nurture and how ideological agendas can distort the fearless investigation of the science. All of Barb’s books are available on Amazon. We’ll be reading them all and bringing her back on the show. (Huge thanks to David Sloan Wilson for recommending her.) In other news, Barb is starting a Learning How to Learn MOOC this Friday (aka tomorrow) on Coursera. You can find it here: https://www.coursera.org/course/learning. It looks awesome. Just like Barb. Here are the links to the studies Barb mentioned in the show: McCord, Joan. "A Thirty-Year Follow-up of Treatment Effects." American Psychologist 33, no. 3 (1978): 284. And here’s the link to the study on the virtually non-existent replication of research in education: Matthew Makel, Jonathan Plucker, “Facts Are More Important Than Novelty: Replication in the Education Sciences,” Educational Researcher, August 14, 2014. DOI: 10.3102/0013189X14545513 There’s also a very nice popular article discussion of Makel and Plucker’s study from Inside Higher Ed: “Failure to Replicate,” by Charlie Tyson
