Happy Halloween from your grasslands PR Team! This month, Rachel confronts one of her worst childhood fears to bring us a tale of the strange and slithering: a group of animals so odd and cryptic that the existence of many species was only confirmed after their habitat was bulldozed. We're delving into the fascinating world of worm lizards, a world full of unknowns that still begs to be explored. After all, how can we learn about an animal that's virtually impossible to observe in the wild? A fanged and ferocious creature that creeps below our feet, hearing our every step, and slipping ever deeper into the darkness... In the latest example of how researchers are using the latest technologies to track animals less invasively, a team of researchers has proposed harnessing high-flying AI-equipped drones powered to track the endangered black rhino through the wilds of Namibia. In a paper published earlier this year in the journal PeerJ, the researchers show the potential of drone-based AI to identify animals in even the remotest areas and provide real-time updates on their status from the air. While drones — and technology of just about every kind — have been harnessed to track African wildlife, the proposal promises to help gamekeepers move faster to protect rhinos and other megafauna from poachers. AI Podcast host Noah Kravitz spoke to two of the authors of the paper. Zoey Jewel is co founder and president of wild track.org, a global network of biologists and conservationists dedicated to non invasive wildlife monitoring techniques. And Alice Hua is a recent graduate of the School of Information at UC Berkeley in California, and an ML platform engineer at CrowdStrike. Joining us as our guest this week is Monika Wieland Shields, co-founder and director of Orca Behavior Institute. In addition to talking with Monika about OBI's field research, we spoke about the two different ecotypes of killer whales we see in the waters around the San Juan Islands, the endangered fish-eating Southern Residents and the thriving marine mammal eating Bigg's (formerly known as Transients). We discussed the changing trends in sightings of each population in the area and what is driving these changes.  Monika also shared some information about OBI's new study about killer whales and vessels in the Salish Sea, offering a new perspective on factors influencing incident rates.  As we do on each episode we got into recent whale sightings around the San Juan Islands, including the fascinating, ongoing saga of young Bigg's killer whale T34A1 switching families.  Our next episode will drop on May 30th. If you would like to submit feedback or questions to us we might read a few submissions on the next episode. What is soil health, and how do we measure it? What is regenerative agriculture, and why is the label organic confusing and not particularly useful? In this episode of the podcast Lars talks to David Montgomery, a professor of geology at University of Washington, who has in the last fifteen years written a number of books and articles about soil health, food production and agriculture. As he tells it himself, his journey through the world of regenerative agriculture and soil health has turned him from being a pessimist into a staunch optimist, and we're pretty sure that this comes through in the episode.  David also has a new book coming out this summer, written with his wife Anne Biklé: What your food ate: How to heal our land and reclaim our health, which we talk about in this episode. The book is already available for preorder. Aber hört selbst…Quellen:IUCN RED LIST CATEGORIES AND CRITERIA, Version 3.1 Second edition Barnosky, A. D. et al. (2011). Has the Earth's sixth mass extinction already arrived?. See all the Healthcasts at https://www.biobalancehealth.com/healthcast-blog/ FINASTERIDE is a name of a medication that is commonly used in both dermatology and urology.  It is an oral enzyme inhibitor that is used to decrease hair loss and to treat prostate enlargement.  Finasteride is called a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor (5-ARI). It inhibits the enzyme that makes DHT out of free- testosterone.   DHT is not a bad hormone, it is only a problem for us if it is too high or too low.  DHT is one of the hormones that you need in the right quantity for normal sexuality, normal brain function, normal muscle mass and strength et al, but it is not healthy to have too much which can cause male pattern hair loss, facial hair on women, hair loss at the temples in women, and prostate enlargement and trouble urinating in men. Because men have a high incidence of hair loss, and prostate enlargement as they age, dermatologists, urologists and family docs start these men on Finasteride/Propecia/Proscar, but don't think about the side effects or how the drug works. It is sometimes even started for genetic hair loss, which is not successfully treated with Finasteride. What is the function of 5-alpha reductase inhibitor? 5-alpha reductase is vital to the development of male characteristics such as facial hair, deep voice, muscle growth, prostate enlargement male libido and prevention of ED. What are finasteride and it's brother medication, Dutasteride used to treat? Male Pattern hair loss (Androgenic alopecia) in men and postmenopausal women Benign Prostate enlargement (BPH) High DHT causing acne and facial hair in postmenopausal women (off label and only after spironolactone is found to not be enough in women only)   ****Women who are of child-bearing age should not take this drug! What are the names of the two drugs available that are 5-alpha reductase inhibitors?  Finasteride® and Dutasteride® These medications decrease the amount of circulating DHT by 70-98%.  Therefore, when it is used to decrease hair loss and shrink an enlarged prostate, all of the DHT is decreased which results in blocking all the positive actions of DHT such as libido, energy, muscle maintenance, Penile length, erectile function, and male pattern body hair. These male characteristics are blunted for the sake of a thick head of hair and to shrink the prostate.  It takes a much higher testosterone blood level and free testosterone to maintain male characteristics when on these meds. In some men there is no amount of 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors is safe. Side Effects of 5-alph-reductase inhibitors:  Loss Sexual Dysfunction (Overall rate of sexual dysfunction 3.7%) Decreased ejaculatory volume-1.5-3.7% Ejaculation Disorders-0.2-0.8% of libido ED/Impotence 5-8% of the users have this Infertility 34% decreased sperm count, and 14.5% reduced sperm volume after 26 weeks of use. In this episode, we turn to a question that every academic scientist has to answer at some point: How do you choose a scientific journal to receive your paper? Kelle Freel, Shawn Abrahams, Katie Grogan and Jeremy Yoder chat about what they like in a journal, what they consider when picking a publication venue for a new paper, and the various meanings of an "impact factor." JANE, the Journal/Author Name Estimator, will select candidate journals based on a sample of text from your paper's abstract. The Wikipedia article on impact factors is a quick overview of the metric's history and criticisms. There have been multiple studies of the effect Twitter attention may have on a paper's eventual citation count — one for ecology specifically was published in PLOS ONE in 2018. The study establishing a "chaperone effect" in which papers are more likely to be published at a high-impact journal if one of the authors has published in the journal before is on the PNAS website. The recent study of unprofessional peer reviewer comments by Nyssa Silbiger and Amanda Stubler is on the PeerJ website. What's the Future? The “Oracle of Silicon Valley” shares his contrarian thoughts about technology, capitalism, and preparing for the big shifts on the horizon. This week we're talking with futurist and author of the book “WTF: What's the Future?” Tim O'Reilly. Although he's not a manufacturer himself, his insightful perspectives are useful for anyone who wants to be prepared for a future driven by technology trends. You might not have heard Tim's name before, but you probably know his work. He popularized terms like open source and Web 2.0. As an early evangelist for the maker movement, he and his firm O'Reilly Media started Make Magazine and Maker Faire. And he's been an early champion of the Internet of Things. Going way back, he wrote about the world wide web before most of us ever heard about it, back in 1994. I was curious, given Tim's superpowers in identifying trends, where he thinks technology is going today and how it will impact the future of work and business. We talk about his thoughts on the role of capitalism and Silicon Valley. He also shares ideas from his book and many others (links below). I ask Tim how to predict the future, and he tells me that's the wrong question.
