A little past midnight on July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis, a US Navy cruiser, had just delivered the uranium that would be used in the first nuclear bomb dropped on Japan, and was returning to the Philippines when it was struck by a Japanese torpedo. The ship was badly damaged in the attack and within ten minutes it rolled onto its side, dumping 890 crewmen into the pitch-black ocean and dragging the remaining 300 down with the ship. Those who survived the torpedo strike did what they could to grab supplies before abandoning ship, but there were very few life boats or life jackets, so many of the sailors had to float in the water or cling to the few rafts they did manage to take before jumping from the boat. To make matters worse, their mission had been highly confidential and no one in the Navy knew where the Indianapolis was, much less that it had sank. The surviving crew thought things were about as bad as they could get, then the sharks began showing up.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAssociated Press. 1945. On the afternoon of November 7, 2006, a UFO was spotted at Chicago's O'Hare Airport in Illinois, USA. The UFO sighting at O'Hare Airport in Chicago, IL, is a recent reminder that mass UFO sightings still occur, and that in America, at least, witnesses and investigators still get stonewalled by all authorities in their search for explanations. The case also gives us reason to believe that there would be many more cases known to the public if airlines and regulatory agencies were more transparent with the evidence. This CMC forum features an in-depth conversation with former Ohio governor Richard F. Celeste, author of the recent book, In the Heart of It All. Celeste rose from humble beginnings in northeast Ohio to reach the Ohio governor's residence and beyond. His new book recounts Celeste's childhood in Lakewood, Ohio, where his politically ambitious father eventually served as mayor. Awarded a scholarship to attend Yale University, Celeste studied history and later became a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford; while living overseas, he met and quickly married his first wife, Dagmar Braun. Upon returning from Oxford, Celeste expected to begin a teaching career but was recruited to serve as a liaison for Peace Corps volunteers in Latin America, and the young couple relocated to Washington, DC, where they became friendly with Chet and Steb Bowles. When President Kennedy appointed Chet Bowles US ambassador to India, he invited Dick to work as his personal assistant. There, under Bowles's tutelage, Dick began to consider a political career of his own. Celeste returned to Ohio and successfully ran for the Ohio House of Representatives as a Democrat in 1970. After serving two terms, he was elected lieutenant governor in 1974 but lost the 1978 governor's race by a slim margin. Celeste worked in DC as director of the Peace Corps while plotting his next move, and in 1982, his gubernatorial campaign resulted in a landslide victory. He served two terms as Ohio's governor, tackling an epic savings and loan crisis along with mental health reform and job creation. He considered but dismissed a presidential campaign in 1988. He went on to serve as ambassador to India under President Clinton, traveling there with his second wife, Jacqueline Lundquist, and bringing his career full circle. The panelists are: Richard F. Celeste, Former Ohio Governor, 1983-1991 Jo Ingles, Journalist/Producer, Statehouse News Bureau This forum was sponsored by The Ohio State University and Event Marketing Strategies.

About Liz: As the daughter of world-renowned plastic surgeon, Dr. Richard F. Edlich, Liz Edlich and her sister Rachel grew up in their father's labs and were constantly exposed to skin rejuvenation and wound healing. She proceeded to go into the skincare industry and developed around 100 different products for celebrities and television for 10-15 years, alongside Rachel. It wasn't until the two sisters experienced issues with their own skin that they decided to begin a new venture. At the age of 45, Liz Edlich realize that her skin wasn't the same. She found that “gravity had hit” and wrinkles, hair, hormones and weight all seemed to be out of her control. Additionally, Rachel suddenly began to suffer from rosacea. The sisters then set out on their own mission: to create a skincare product that could be Liz's anti-ageing solution but was also formulated to heal and cater to Rachel's sensitive skin. Once created, Liz had only used the product for 2 weeks before she found herself inundated with comments from co-workers about what she was using – something that had never happened to her before. Rachel's rosacea also cleared after 30 days and they knew they were on to something special. After testing the product in the lab, they discovered that it outperformed numerous other brands in potency and before they knew it, Radical Skincare was born. Liz is adamant that the products created are only those that are truly needed in the market. She bases her decision for product creation on what she and her friends require and sets out to create a multitasking product to target the issues. Her biggest priority is to make a difference, not just to people's skin, but to their lives. She constantly calls upon her experiences with some of the biggest success coaches in the world and applies that passion to how she can use Radical Skincare to better the lives of others. Radical Skincare has now been taken from 2 Barneys stores in New York and Los Angeles to 16 countries and 800 stores. The brand can now be found in Saks Fifth Avenue, Sephora, QVC, Fenwick's, Harvey Nichols, all Space NK stores and now Harrods – and it only continues to grow. In this episode we discuss: Liz's upbringing in How passion fueled her Her want for Freedom Growing up with incredible parents Her Father's example Working in many roles And much more! For more than 40 years in the early 20th century, Martin Couney ran a sideshow in which premature babies were displayed in incubators. With this odd practice he offered a valuable service in an era when many hospitals couldn't. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll describe Couney's unusual enterprise, which earned both criticism and praise. We'll also marvel over an Amazonian survival and puzzle over a pleasing refusal. Intro: The inventor of the Dewey Decimal System suggested that GHEAUGHTEIGHPTOUGH might spell potato.
