Welcome back to The Purpose Summit series on Stories from the River.  In the 9th episode of The Purpose Summit series recorded in front of a live studio audience at the NASCAR Hall of Fame Museum Gear Shop, host Charlie Malouf welcomes Joe Colavito to discuss his journey and experiences related to The Purpose Summit.  Joe has attended the summit four times, beginning as a participant and evolving into a speaker. Joe shares the story of how he initially discovered the summit through a business partner and how he first attended. Over the years, his involvement deepened, culminating in him presenting at the University of Notre Dame in 2022 and at the most recent event in Charlotte in 2024 with a breakout session titled, "Struggling to Navigate with Purpose in a Panini Maker Generation." The session aims to help attendees understand the importance of balancing purpose amidst life's pressures, akin to the heat and pressure in a panini maker. Joe dives deeper into his personal journey, detailing his pivotal transition from a life centered around material success and self-centered activities such as golf, travel, and the country club lifestyle to one focused on purpose and spiritual fulfillment. This transformation began after a life-changing conversation with a co-worker named Scott Kaufman, which ultimately led Joe to embrace faith and redirect his career path.  Joe's experiences, including the profound impact of losing five teenagers to suicide within his community, have driven him to dedicate himself to helping others find and activate their purpose. He now runs Life Purpose Scan and promotes the idea of "Run after One," a concept grounded in biblical principles, aiming to impact individual lives deeply. At his breakout session, Joe instructed attendees to pay careful attention to where they give their "a-tension" and stated that your purpose isn't something that you have to find because it is your GPS that's built into you.  That you just have to access it and instructed attendees how to activate it.  Joe wrote the book "Inside Out, Upside Down" for parents, coaches, and teachers of these young lives who are struggling. Through his work, Joe emphasizes the importance of accessing and activating one's purpose and understanding the difference between perception and reality. Joe's future foundation will be called "The Run After One Foundation." Inflation, high gas prices, foreign policy failures, and the deep mistrust of leadership by American citizens -- these problems and more dogged President Jimmy Carter throughout his one term in the White House. Although faced with difficulties not entirely within his control, Carter committed plenty of unforced errors, none more defining than his address on live TV on June 15, 1979 -- the "malaise" speech. A half century later, President Biden's first two years in office are evoking memories of Carter's struggles. Democrats are said to be whispering that they would prefer someone else run for president in 2024 because Biden's approval ratings are so poor. Is the comparison fair? In this episode, historian and Carter biographer Scott Kaufman takes us back to the late 1970s to see if Biden might be following in Carter's footsteps as a one-term president.

USC welcome's back Reggie Bush. And Mikey Williams makes an unpopular choice for his college career. Joining us is Scott Kaufman, the Irritated Buddah, and we're going hard in the paint.

How do you pursue the right goals and find meaning in life? Pretty big questions. My guest in the episode, Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman is a big name globally in the humanistic psychology space and has a suggestion on this from a psychological standpoint. In our enchanting conversation, Dr. Kaufman told me what got him into psychology and described his most monumental rework of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. In this conversation, Dr. Kaufman reveals segments of his last book where he updates the common understanding of Maslow’s theory by exploring less-well-known writings of Maslow’s, and also by incorporating more recent empirical psychological studies. He suggests the more dynamic model that complements the modern fast pace of living, incorporating some standard basic security needs then expanding into more creative and dynamic capabilities. It’s an interesting take on the importance of appreciating that the nature of our lives is constantly changing and I really hope that this talk will help all kinds of minds to live a creative, fulfilling, and self-actualized life. Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman has taught courses on intelligence, creativity, and well-being at Columbia University, NYU, the University of Pennsylvania, and elsewhere. Scott received a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from Yale University, and an M. Phil in experimental psychology from the University of Cambridge under a Gates Cambridge Scholarship. In 2015, he was named one of “50 groundbreaking scientists who are changing the way we see the world” by Business Insider. Catapulted into the Oval Office by an unusual set of circumstances, Gerald Ford remains a unique figure in American presidential history. In Ambition, Pragmatism, and Party: A Political Biography of Gerald R. Ford (University Press of Kansas, 2017), Scott Kaufman recounts the life and career of this often misunderstood leader. He sees the roots of Ford's political ideology in his Michigan youth, where his stepfather and namesake stressed the importance of hard work and individual achievement. After working as a lawyer and serving in the navy during World War II Ford won election to Congress, where he set his sights on becoming Speaker of the House of Representatives. Frustrated in his aspirations, Ford was in the seeming twilight of his career when he was nominated to replace Spiro Agnew as vice president after Agnew's resignation in 1973. Within eight months Richard Nixon's resignation brought Ford to the presidency itself, where he grappled with the consequences of numerous shifts taking place both nationally and throughout the world. Though Ford aspired to election in his own right, his decision to pardon Nixon defined him to an increasingly cynical populace in ways that ultimately proved too difficult to overcome, contributing to his defeat in the 1976 presidential election. We’re back with the second part of our discussion of President Jimmy Carter and his times.  On this episode we cast our eye beyond the United States and discuss the tumultuous foreign events that took place during the late 1970s in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.  Why is Jimmy Carter, a president who brokered a historic peace agreement between Israel and Egypt, remembered as a weak leader who presided over American decline on the world stage?  We wrap up with a discussion of Carter’s post-presidency and ask, is he the greatest of all the post-presidents?  Also, we should note that we recorded this podcast before the sad news that Jimmy Carter has been diagnosed with cancer. ‘History’s greatest monster’ or an underrated and admirable president?  We’re back and we’re discussing President Jimmy Carter (1977-1981) and his times.  Such are the amount of topics that we need to cover that the podcast will be split into two, with this month’s release dealing primarily with the domestic issues of late 1970s. Welcome to a land of self-doubt, oil shocks, and a tanking economy, where the issues that would define the ‘culture wars’ for the next four decades were taking shape.  Presiding over it all is the Democratic President James Earl Carter, a born-again Christian from Plains, Georgia who has promised to never lie to the American people.  Was Carter’s presidency consigned to failure by events beyond his control or was the ‘American moralist’ responsible for his own downfall?  Hopefully, by the end of the two podcasts you’ll be able to form your own opinion! We have a very special episode with return guest Scott Kaufman, who you might know as SEK. We’re many weeks into the new fall television season. One of the new trends is television shows based on comic book series with a half dozen airing in the 2014-2015 season, many of those based on DC Comics comic books. One of those is Constantine which airs Fridays on NBC. Based on the Vertigo series Hellblazer and the New 52 series Constantine, the show follows the mast of the dark arts John Constantine. We’ll discuss the series (and we’re sure much more). Scott is the proprietor of the AV Club’s Internet Film School and an associate editor at The Raw Story. He also writes for Lawyers, Guns & Money, podcasts, and is an expert on Game of Thrones. So listen in LIVE, and join the conversation too. We want to hear what you have to say, so call us at (619) 768-2952 or Tweet us your thoughts to @graphicpolicy.

It only takes one. "Assertiveness and kindness is the combination most attractive to women." -Scott Kaufman The Cheat Sheet: Dopamine is the pleasure molecule: true or false? (7:25) Scott defines a true alpha male. (18:40) The Dark Triad revealed: is it as ominous as it sounds? (19:10) What is positive psychology really about? (31:00) Why chat-up lines don't work. (39:50) Mate copying: what does the term mean? (43:10) And so much more... If you've listened to the show before, you know we don't buy into the whole "alpha or beta male" mindset that is so prevalent in society right now. At the Art of Charm we stand on the belief that men are far more than just "alpha tough guys" or "beta door mats". And today Scott Kaufman, Scientific Director at the Imagination Institute and author of Mating Intelligence Unleashed, shares the science behind that belief. On this episode, we talk about why the "alpha-beta" thing is far too simplistic, what the dark triad/bad boy thing is all about, and why assertiveness, kindness and humor are some of the most attractive traits to women ...all of that and so much more! More About This Show: When it comes to the alpha vs beta showdown, Scott Kaufman sees neither as being the ultimate for an ideal male. He says there are really two paths for men: dominance or authentic. The dominance path is the one we typically associate with the alpha male: aggressive, arrogant, unstable ego and underneath the bravado, insecurity. And on the authentic path is the type of men we strive create through our work at The Art of Charm: well-earned accomplishments, positive mental health, conscientious, satisfying personal relationships, and genuine self-esteem based on knowing yourself to be a person of value. Contrary to the pop culture definition, Scott says an alpha male is really a man who has cultivated these skills and uses them appropriately. Another misnomer in today's society is that women love the bad boy. While it may be true that the "bad boy" racks up more sexual partners, scientific studies indicate that quantity of sexual partners does not necessarily indicate higher levels of personal happiness. That's why you'll often hear men who've bed high numbers of women later lament they still weren't happy. Those men who end up with such high volume of sexual partners also often score high in the Dark Triad, not an affiliation you'd want. The Dark Triad is made up of three pillars: Machiavellian tendencies, narcissism and psychopathy. They are more likely to scheme and manipulate anyone to get what they want, sex or otherwise. The short-term strategies they use are effective in generating multiple partners, but not in cultivating relationships that are meaningful, fulfilling or long-lasting. To do that, Scott says to focus on what science and studies have shown women actually want: an assertive, kind and funny man. The assertive man asks for what he wants, shares what his needs and desires are without demanding them or having them fulfilled at the expense of others. Kindness may seem like an obvious trait, but often men are concerned about coming off as doormats by being kind to others. Scott provided some useful suggestions in the show as well as meditations which are linked in the Resources section below. And lastly, on the topic of humor, Scott talks about several studies that highlight women do want men who make them laugh. But also if you're in a group of women and you make one of them laugh, she's the one you hone in on. Science proves that if a woman is already laughing at your jokes, she finds you attractive! A woman will not laugh at a man's jokes (no matter how funny they are) if she doesn't think he's attractive. Laughter is also a great indicator of the potential long-term success of a relationship. The couples who stay together longer are those who laugh together. The best pairing here is a man who crack jokes plus a woman who laughs at his jokes, that combination has the most potential for staying together the longest. Scott and I also talk about the role vulnerability and creativity both play in attraction, and so much other great info! It was a pleasure to have Scott on the show, this episode is surely an instant classic so have a listen! I want to thank Scott for joining us and to thank you for being here too.
