We often refer to the “trades,” the publications of fire service, for learning tactics, theories, seeing new equipment and new developments in apparatus. However, there is more to what we do than simply, “How to…”  More importantly, to do this job, we must have a strong idea of self, i.e., “Who am I?,” “How do I do this job and be there for my family?" “I've seen so much tragedy, how do I deal with it without looking weak?” and much more. Thankfully, over the last five-six years, we have seen the launch of two major developments, initially in the U.S. Fire Service and subsequently, in other countries as well, the Firefighter Cancer and the Behavioral Health Initiatives. Both are making differences. And there's always more to learn. My guest on this episode is Capt. Kory Pearn, a 20-year veteran firefighter in Ontario Canada. He is also the Editor-in-Chief and CEO of CRACKYL Media, Inc., publisher of CRACKYL Magazine. Launched in 2021, CRACKYL brings a different “face” to the trades, with most of it focus on our lifestyle and the human side of being a firefighter. Many articles in each issue deal with the human side of being in this field. Career firefighter and entrepreneur Kory Pearn is the founder and creator of Crackyl Magazine, a publication dedicated to help support firefighters by answering questions and offering advice. A career firefighter, Kory was on an exciting journey that soon came to a halt. An irregular heartbeat forced Kory to take a year off work, causing questions to creep into his mind about his success, and whether he could continue. He decided to persevere, inspiring him to help others do the same. This led to the creation of Crackyl magazine.  Crackyl takes on heavy topics that are often avoided, such as financial advice, discussions of marital struggles, and how to balance work and family. What was the inspiration for the name Crackyl? The sound every firefighter hears is the crackling of fire. It is something that Kory states is imprinted on every firefighter's mind and brings firefighters together. With Crackyl, Kory has been able to help firefighters get the “Been there, done that '' advice to help them further their careers and grow their personal lives. Now why is Crackyl spelled the way it is? In your body, there are Y shaped proteins called antibodies. Kory Pearn is a veteran firefighter and the man behind Crackyl Magazine. We discuss his journey into the fire service, mentoring future firefighters, overcoming a near fatal cardiac condition, mental and physical health, the origin story of Crackyl and much more.

In this week's edition of Glass and Out, we welcome one the most experienced coaches in today's game. With over 40 years of coaching experience, Perry Pearn's remarkable resume spans the globe and includes just about every level of hockey . He began his coaching career with a 16-year run at the Norther Alberta Institute of Technology. Under his direction, the school became one of the top University programs in Canada. NAIT would collect five CCAA Championships, have an overall record of 457-177-24, and complete an undefeated season in 1984-85. Pearn, himself, captured seven Alberta College Coach of the Year Awards. After his time at NAIT, Pearn would spend one season in the Swiss Leagues  and the next in Medicine Hat in the Western Hockey League. Next would be the start of a 20-year run in the NHL as an assistant coach with Winnipeg, Ottawa, the Rangers, Montreal, and Vancouver. Internationally, he has led Canada on three occasions at the World Junior Championships, capturing gold as head coach in 1993. He also recently spent one season as the head coach of Canada's National Women's team. This past season, Pearn worked under Bill Peters as an assistant with Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg of the KHL. Put all that together and you have one of the most well-respected coaches in hockey, who has put in the time to constantly learn and grow as a person and coach. This week, we revisit a chat with Cole Pearn that originally took place in January, 2017, just a few weeks prior to the Daytona 500 and the start of the NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series season. 11 months later, Pearn is now a NASCAR Champion, Crew Chief of the #78 Furniture Row Racing team driven by Martin Truex Jr. Truex & Pearn won 8 races in 2017, including the final contest at Homestead, Florida, where they beat out Brad Keselowski, Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch, all former series champions in their own right. They also collected wins at Las Vegas, Kansas (twice), Kentucky, Watkins Glen, Chicago and Charlotte through the course of the season. In this discussion, Pearn recalls his journey that has taken him from following in his dad’s footsteps as teenager racer based out of a tiny little town called Mount Brydges, Ontario, to leaving his job at Toyota to go to North Carolina to eventually earning the Crew Chief’s post with Furniture Row Racing and the incredible success they’ve enjoyed ever since. This story is a testament to knowing what you want, having the guts to go after it and to working relentlessly to do the right things over and over and over again until the results come. Dr Alison Pearn, Associate Director of the Darwin Correspondence Project, delivers a public lecture at Madingley Hall on 2 July 2015. In it she argues that putting the public Darwin back into his personal context makes both the man and his ideas come alive in fascinating new ways for modern audiences.

A tiny sketchbook that brings to life one of the most famous voyages in history has been digitised and made available online for the first time. The intricate pencil drawings and watercolours in the sketchbook were made by Conrad Martens, shipmate to Charles Darwin as they travelled around South America on the voyage of HMS Beagle. Now, for the first time, all of Martens’ Beagle sketches have been made freely available online through Cambridge University Library’s Digital Library: http://cudl.lib.cam.ac.uk/ Martens made the drawings between the summer of 1833 and the early months of 1835. Cambridge University Library owns his two sketchbooks from this period and has made the above audio slideshow to celebrate their addition to the Digital Library. “These drawings were made almost two centuries ago but even now, they still really vividly bring to life one of the most famous voyages in the world and arguably the most famous in the history of science,” said Dr Alison Pearn, Associate Director of the Darwin Correspondence Project. “Each of these pages is only 14cm by 20cm. It’s wonderful that everyone now has the opportunity to flick through these sketchbooks in their virtual representation and to follow the journey as Martens and Darwin saw it unfold.” The first sketchbook begins just before Martens heard that the Beagle was looking for a new ship’s artist, capturing street life in Montevideo in August 1833. The later sketches give a sense of how hard and difficult the journey must have been both on sea and land in uncharted territory. Martens did not have much time to make his sketches and the notebooks are littered with hastily-scribbled notes to himself about colours, textures and the geology of the landscapes before him. “Darwin described the Beagle voyage as the most formative experience of his life and to see it through the eyes of one of his companions is a very vivid reminder of the reality of that journey,” added Pearn. “Martens sketches are a visual counterpart to Darwin’s letters home.
