Show Summary In today’s world, trying to get married has become... a hot mess. So, to all the COVID brides to have been, grooms and wedding professionals: you’re not alone. Welcome to Bride To Have Been, a StudioPod original podcast hosted by Emily Lewis, with the purpose of building a community by sharing the reality of this new normal in the wedding industry. Let’s keep inspiring each other and celebrate the thing we treasure the most: love. Bride Roma has been with her groom Adam for over ten years. Due to Colorado laws where the couple live, they are even considered common law married. So having a big wedding wasn’t a priority, or even something they thought they wanted, but when they decided to plan a small celebration for their 30 closest friends and family, their guest list quickly grew to over 120 people. The only problem was the date they chose: September 13, 2020. Now, that date has come and gone and the couple is still trying to decide how to move forward with their celebration. Throughout their COVID journey there has been tears, lots of cussing and all of the other unknowns that come with both wedding planning and dealing with a global pandemic. In the end Roma is looking forward to creating a fun and romantic event that they’ll want to remember for decades to come. Just how many guests will be able to attend the event, only time will tell. Jump straight into: (02:27) - Roma on meeting Adam - “I'm just going to apologize to my family if they're listening to this, because it's going to get real raunchy here in just a little bit, but I don't know how else to describe it.” (06:47) - How their relationship works - “He really is my person and we just get each other on a whole other level. We even have our own secret language. We spend a lot of time together.” (07:18) - Roma on their attitude about getting married - “There was no proposal. So me and him have been against weddings for a really long time. We were always a couple of, ‘We're not going to get married. A ring? It's just a symbol. It's just a piece of paper.’” (09:21) - Why Roma and Adam started changing their minds about getting married - “Anyone who's a child of divorce, I think there's a little bit of hesitation when it comes to marriage, you know? And I think that's pretty natural. And so for him, I think it took him a while, but I think we both realized a marriage is so much more than a wedding and we already have that.” (10:52) - On Roma’s vision for the wedding - “I want it to be fun. I want it to be funny. I want it to be romantic. I think when it comes to the ceremony, I really just want it to reflect us.” (11:11) - Wedding rules - “I’ve already been told that I'm not allowed to cuss.” (19:50) - Deciding to postpone the wedding - “Essentially, we could have had 50 people there, but because we didn't know who the heck was going to come or who wanted to come because no one responded, it was just kind of, ‘Cool. I guess we'll just push it out a year.’” (37:08) - On the emotional roller coaster of postponing - “I full-on cried when we made the call. I told myself, ‘I'm not going to cry. I'm not going to get upset that the wedding gets postponed.’” Resources Follow https://www.instagram.com/romaenjoyinglife/ (Roma) on Instagram Message Roma onhttps://www.facebook.com/RomaBonaventura ( Facebook) https://pureromance.com/pws/tabhandler?bizname=romabonaventura&tabname=about-me (Contact Roma for a Pure Romance consultation or party) Thanks for listening! APOCALYSPE NOW? EAT THE BOOKSunday, August 2, 2020We have a record of Satan manifesting in some kind of physical form only twice in the Bible:1. When he spoke to Eve in the Garden of Eden.2. When he tempted Jesus during his 40 days on the mountain. In both records Satan was attacking or questioning the Word of God.Revelation 10:1-2Revelation 10:8-11Obedience = SweetnessDisobedience = BitternessEzekiel 3:3Romans 10:17Hebrews 4:12 The Bible contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners, and the happiness of believers. Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its histories are true and its decisions are immutable.Read it to the wise; believe it to be safe and to be holy. It contains the light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer you.It is the traveler’s map, the pilgrim’s staff, the pilot’s compass, the soldier’s sword and the Christian’s charter. Here too, Heaven is opened and the gates of hell are disclosed.Christ is the grand subject, our good design, and the glory of God is its end. It should fill the memory, rule the heart, and guide the feet. Read it slowly, frequently, and prayerfully. It is a mine of wealth, a paradise of glory and a river of pleasure.ANNOUNCEMENTS Back to School Palooza – Our Back to School Palooza has been cancelled.SERVE Rally – Let’s reconnect! Joining me today are Kathy Sellitti, Assistant Principal at Kingston High School and Charlotte Adamis, School Librarian, J. Watson Bailey Middle School in Kingston, two of the several organizers of "Kingston Reads About Racism" talking about the book So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo. Their next community discussions will take place, Thursday, July 16th and Thursday July 31. Please RSVP in advance to get the call information. You can listen in to their first discussion here.Today they share how this started in their schools with their colleagues and how they've seen some pretty significant transformation amongst themselves and their peers. We dig into some of the subjects of the book like white privilege and police brutality and what we've all learned about our privilege from reading this book and expanding our awareness of the experiences of black and brown people. They share resources that have been helpful to them including the work of Bettina Love, author of We Want To Do More Than Survive, Abolitionist Teaching and the Pursuit of Educational Freedom.I am grateful to these women for bringing this conversation to our community and being willing to share personally on the show today. I look forward to joining in with the continuing community conversations to follow. As mentioned, Shaniqua Bowden also touched on this book along with Why I'm No Longer Talking To White People About Race (by Reni Eddo-Lodge) during her show the Nubian Cafe with guests Erica Brown and Rashida Tyler back on January. June 25, 2020 marks the 70th anniversary of the start of the Korean War. The conflict on the Korean Peninsula has been going on for so long that we sometimes see it as a natural extension of the Second World War - But we forget that the tragic division was one that no one had planned or wanted. So how did the Koreas end up becoming two countries if neither the United States or the Soviet Union had wanted this to happen? To take us back to those fateful early years of the Cold War, we caught up with historian Charles Kraus. He is the deputy director of the History and Public Policy Programs at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. The Wilson Center’s digital archives recently curated a series of declassified documents from the Soviet Union that reveal what the country’s chief policymakers, including Stalin, expected on the Korean Peninsula at the end of the Second World War. These documents weave a complex story of missed opportunities and misaligned intentions that ultimately yielded a tragedy. Please consider visiting the Wilson Center’s digital archives: https://digitalarchive.wilsoncenter.org/ And here are some articles by Charles Krause: "Failed Diplomacy: Soviet-American Relations and the Division of Korea" (https://www.wilsoncenter.org/blog-post/failed-diplomacy-soviet-american-relations-and-division-korea) "Preparing for War: Soviet-North Korean Relations, 1947-1950" (https://www.wilsoncenter.org/blog-post/preparing-war-soviet-north-korean-relations-1947-1950) "China, North Korea, and the Origins of the Korean War" (https://www.wilsoncenter.org/blog-post/china-north-korea-and-origins-korean-war) And please check out the just-published issue of the Wilson Quarterly, which focuses on the Korean War. You can find a link to the issue, again, in the description of this episode. https://www.wilsonquarterly.com/quarterly/korea-70-years-on/ On Wednesday June 24, KEI is hosting Cold War scholars James Person and William Stueck for a historical perspective on how the Korean War shaped the geopolitical tensions in Asia and how they continue to affect the current security environment in the region. Please RSVP to receive briefing updates A live webcast will be streamed at 2 PM EDT at www.eesi.org/livecast The Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI) invites you to a briefing on scientific developments and policy initiatives that are helping protect Alaskan ecosystems and communities from erosion, sea level rise, and other coastal hazards. Alaska coastal communities are experiencing extreme challenges as shore-fast ice—a coastal buffer to storm water—disappears and houses built on thawing permafrost buckle and become uninhabitable. Stakeholder engagement combined with up-to-date scientific analyses on environmental risk are necessary to create adaptation plans that make economic sense while assisting vulnerable communities. The panelists will describe the collaborative process between federal, state, local, and tribal stakeholders in collecting, sharing, and acting on scientific data to inform policy decisions around adaptation and help communities define and achieve their resilience goals. These projects can serve as a model for other regions experiencing similar issues in high-latitude or coastal areas.
