Is there an immediate insight or application you would like to share from the passage or the message? One author described these verses as Paul's “divine dissatisfaction.” What would be some indications of “divine dissatisfaction” in one's life? Alternatively, what would be some indications of spiritual complacency?Have you ever been (or are you now) at a stalemate in your spiritual growth? What factors brought about that stalemate? Why is it important for you to “forget what lies behind” (verse 13)? What successes, failures, or experiences from the past are hindering you from “straining forward” to knowing and serving Christ in the future? While we are unavoidably caught up in daily life, how can we maintain a focus on “the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (verse 14 ESV)?Paul declared that “pressing on” is the mark of your continued process toward spiritual maturity (verse 15). In 2:12-13, Paul related that “God is at work in you” for his good purposes. 12:28 Was macht Ihr für Siemens? Did you ever have a period of your life that was characterized by "reckless adventure"?• Did you ever receive an "offer you couldn't refuse" that turned out to be not so great in the end? Tell us about it.• The past few weeks have given us many examples of parallels between ancient tyrants like Abimelech and modern megalomaniacs. `What similarities do you see in the ancient and modern world? Make sure you talk about more than politics and leaders.• Often people argue over whether God "causes" or "allows" troubling things to happen in the world. I like to say "God orchestrates every event in the world to accomplish His redemptive purposes." Why is this discussion relevant?• In what way is God calling you to be a "Jotham" and stand up against the "Abimelech" in your life? What might frighten you about the assignment?• Sooner or later God repays wickedness. What does that inspire in you: Awe? Comfort? Guilt? Fear? JUDGES: A Faithful God in a Broken World"Idolatry and Leadership"(Judges 1-21)For bulletin in PDF form click here.Message SlidesFrom My Book Shelf: "Bullies and Saints" and The Beautiful Tune of JesusInsights on IdolatryIdolatry has always been, and is now, a snare for God's people. The angel of the Lord went up from Gilgal to Bokim and said, “I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land I swore to give to your ancestors. I said, ‘I will never break my covenant with you, and you shall not make a covenant with the people of this land, but you shall break down their altars.' Yet you have disobeyed me. Why have you done this? And I have also said, ‘I will not drive them out before you; they will become traps for you, and their gods will become snares to you.'” Judges 2:1-3• God is always faithful to His covenant; He will bless and discipline His children.• God will use persecution and oppression to turn His children back to Him.• We bring the consequences of idolatry upon ourselves.• Idolatry is any priority that is greater than worshipping the Lord fully.• Idolatry usually looks like we are simply fitting into the world's value system.• Idolatry makes sense in the moment.Lessons on LeadershipLasting spiritual impact requires faithful leaders.Whenever the Lord raised up a judge for them, he was with the judge and saved them out of the hands of their enemies as long as the judge lived; for the Lord relented because of their groaning under those who oppressed and afflicted them. But when the judge died, the people returned to ways even more corrupt than those of their ancestors, following other gods and serving and worshiping them. They refused to give up their evil practices and stubborn ways. Judges 2:18-19• Corrupt leaders are interested in personal power and influence.• Uncertain leadership provides a context for chaos and idolatry.• A failure to teach and obey God's word leads to subtle paganism.• Ungodly leaders are always providing ways to peacefully get along with the world.• You can be used by God, and even empowered by the Spirit, and not be spiritual.• God can use anyone but He is looking for faithful leaders.Next StepsTruth: The Lord is faithful to fulfill all of His promises.Warning: Idolatry is subtle and disastrous.Challenge: The Lord is looking for faithful servants. It might be a behavior, or an attitude, or a habit.• Why is it so easy to be overcome with the appeal of idolatry?• In what subtle ways do we let the values of the world become more controlling than our love for the Lord?• What changes do we need to make to realign ourselves with the purposes of God?• "Power corrupts." Returning the week of January 12th with 27 small groups, containing over 350 people, Home Church has a place for YOU! Home Church is all about Serving Together. Our Home Church Ministry values deep relationships as well as spiritual growth and here at Fellowship we believe that one of the best ways to foster this is through serving together. As people are serving together and building a common passion for others two things take place: those serving grow closer as they are on mission with one another, and our local community is impacted for the sake of the gospel. Our Home Churches serve our own body through many avenues and volunteer with our local ministry partners in various ways throughout the year. Serving is a key piece as we build community in the body of Christ. Fellowship’s desire is that everyone who calls Fellowship home connect relationally in a Home Church. Returning the week of January 12th with 27 small groups, containing over 350 people, Home Church has a place for YOU! Home Church is all about Spiritual Growth. Spiritual growth is a key component of our Home Church Ministry. Home Churches are sermon based which means on a weekly basis, groups are spending time opening the scriptures and applying what was taught on Sunday morning. We believe the Word of God can transform how we think about God, our daily lives and the way we engage the world around us. Being together regularly also provides opportunities to pray for one another as we trust God and build our faith in community. Fellowship’s desire is that everyone who calls Fellowship home connect relationally in a Home Church. For more information stop by the Connection Center after service or online at fellowshipconway.org/homechurch.End of Year Giving Thank you for another year of faithful giving.
