Send us a textThe Learning Our Way project aims to address systemic racism and promote health equity for Indigenous peoples through field schools led by Indigenous Knowledge Holders. This three-year project, funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), is a partnership between, Wuikinuxv, Kwakiutl, Ka:'yu:'k't'h'/Che:k:tles7et'h', Dzawada̱ a̱ʼenux̱ x̱w communities and North Island College.  Evelyn and Joanna are nurse researchers for the Learning Our Way project and Paul Willie acted as a Project Advisor. Evelyn and Paul are both of the Kwakwaka'wakw Nation, of the Dzawada̱ a̱ʼenux̱ x̱w  tribe and both acted as Indigenous Knowledge Keepers for the project. Evelyn is an Elder in Residence at North Island College and Joanna has spent most of her career working with and advocating for health equity for Indigenous people. This podcast includes only the voices of Evelyn and Joanna because Paul passed away on April 20, 2025, before we had a chance to record his perspectives. Paul was a treasured Noxsola (wise one), generously sharing his cultural knowledge, life lessons and philosophical insights, particularly in his contributions to the Learning Our Way project.Since the first field school was offered in 2007 Paul has helped all of those involved to understand, challenge and change our colonial mindsets.  His teachings include reminding us that “there are two laws we all must live by:  to look after the environment and to look after each other. There are two tasks this requires: to let go of fear and to practice unconditional love” ( Paul Willie 2022).  Paul generously shared his traditional knowledge stating: “We have chosen to experience our physicality in these times, to evolve by our experience, the evolution of our spiritual beingness. We must always come from a learning mindset. We are spiritual beings having a physical experience. He explained that the “importance of programs like Learning Our Way is that when we learn about others, we learn about ourselves,” (Paul Willie, 2023). Joanna expresses her deep gratitude for having had the opportunity to learn from Paul and how his teachings have helped her to live a deeper, more meaningful life, not only as a nurse and educator but humbly as a person. G̱̱ilakas'la, Paul (Joanna Fraser, May 2025).During his funeral service at T'saxis Gukwdzi, Paul's decades of work towards improving the healthcare system for Indigenous peoples was proudly emphasized along with his contributions to field schools, Learning Our Way and his consultation work with North Island College.Even though his voice is not included in this podcast his work and spirit are all through it.  Instagram: @calling.all.nursesComments and feedback can be sent to our email: callingallnurses.podcast@gmail.com

Joining Benny on episode 74 is Harry Klaus, a Project Advisor with The Big Fish Contracting Company. Harry talks about what makes Big Fish a unique company to work for, and how it truly is a family atmosphere where everyone is taken care of. On this episode, Harry shares his origin stories of the different industries he has been involved with, the traveling he got to do, and how that all has set him up for success at this point in his career. Harry then goes in-depth about a pivotal event in his life. At age 25, he found himself in a very bad car accident which left him in a coma for 2 weeks. He had broken a staggering number of bones, and eventually awoke in the hospital unable to move. This extreme adversity from the accident gave Harry a true second chance at life after his healing process, and a new perspective on not allowing himself to get hung up on things in the past – as the past cannot be changed, but it can be reflected on for growth. This is an inspiring episode about second chances, learning life lessons, and reflecting on the journey through life.

Episode 126: Al-Harf as a site of Negotiating Modernism and Unity The articulation of the Arabic letter in modern art in the Arab world has been a popular topic of discussion. The letter served 20th century artists on multiple levels and allowed for contradictory arguments. The letter became part of a more complex discourse of signs that drew on a collective and historical memory of difference, rupture and continuity. It disrupted and subverted the rhetoric of regional separation and promoted unity; its prominence in this imaginative and constructed discourse alluded to an emphasis on cultural overlaps, intersections, connections, and continuity between the Mashriq and the Maghreb. Equally, it gave artists comfort and confidence that came from the immediate perception of a marked cultural (and at times political) identity for the work. Manipulating the Arabic letter in art, thus, served as a mediator between national identity, heritage and modern art. Nada Shabout is a Regent Professor of Art History and the Coordinator of the Contemporary Arab and Muslim Cultural Studies Initiative (CAMCSI) at the University of North Texas. She is the founding president of the Association for Modern and Contemporary Art from the Arab World, Iran and Turkey (AMCA). She is the author of Modern Arab Art: Formation of Arab Aesthetics, University of Florida Press, 2007; co-editor with S. Mikdadi, New Vision: Arab Art in the 21st Century, Thames & Hudson, 2009; and co-editor with S. Rogers and A. Lenssen, Modern Art in the Arab World: Primary Documents, Museum of Modern Art, New York, 2018. She is also founding director of Modern Art Iraq Archive. Notable among exhibitions she has curated: Sajjil: A Century of Modern Art, 2010; traveling exhibition, Dafatir: Contemporary Iraqi Book Art, 2005-2009; and co-curator, Modernism and Iraq, 2009. In 2017, she received The Crow Collection of Asian Art's Achievement in Asian Arts and Culture Award, and in 2018, the UNT Presidential Excellency Award. Shabout was the Project Advisor for the Saudi National Pavilion, Venice Biennale 2019. Shabout is on the Board of Directors, Visual Art Commission, Ministry of Culture, Saudi Arabia (2020-2023), the Board of The Academic Research Institute in Iraq (TARII), and the College Art Association (CAA) Board of Directors (2020-2024). Her current projects include, leading an AMCA team, as part of the Getty Foundation Connecting Art Histories initiative, in support of “Mapping Art Histories from the Arab World, Iran and Turkey,” coediting with Sarah Rogers and Suheyla Takesh, Modern Art in the Arabian Peninsula, and working on a new book project, Demarcating Modernism in Iraqi Art: The Dialectics of the Decorative, 1951-1979, both under contract with the American University in Cairo Press.  This episode is part of the Modern Art in the Maghrib series, and was recorded on April 9, 2021, via zoom.  This is part of a larger Council of American Overseas Research Centers program organized by the Centre d'Études Maghrébines à Tunis (CEMAT) and financed by the Andrew Mellon Foundation that seeks to collaborate with local institutions for a greater awareness of art historical research in north Africa.

“After Illusion”, Eiman Elgibreen ©farrenkopf “After Illusion” Saudi Arabia Pavilion, Eiman Elgibreen, Curator, Zahrah Al Ghamdi, Artist The pavilion curator Eiman Elgibreen, the assistant professor at the Princess Nourah University in Riyadh, says: “[Al Ghamdi] starts from a medium that recalls abandoned spaces from her childhood, and reshapes it to give it a new life by making it part of her present space, and thus her future memory… The other reason for choosing Al Ghamdi is her brilliant ability to turn traditional crafts into contemporary art without compromising on any aspect.” Zahrah Al Ghamdi, artist. ©farrenkopf “May You Live in Interesting Times”, the title of the 58th Venice Biennale brought for the first time in its 124 year history an exhibition representing 53% women solo artists. Of that historic change, the Saudi Arabia Pavilion returned to the Venice Biennale after an eight year hiatus with artist Zahrah Al Ghamdi and curator Eiman Elgibreen “After Illusion”. The country was last represented at the 2011 Biennale. Zahrah Al Ghamdi represented her new work in the Pavilion of Saudi Arabia at the Venice Biennale 2019. She is known for her site-specific installations that are assembled using natural materials such as sand, rocks and leather. For the exhibition “After Illusion”, Al Ghamdi demonstrates the intimate tactile encounter she undergoes in the process of making the work that exhibits her master craftsmanship. The land artist starts from local leather, a medium that recalls abandoned spaces from her childhood and reshapes it in 52,000 pieces. The exhibition aims to recognize, reconnect, and revisit a feeling where one tries to explore something new but rather familiar; a step into an imaginary world created by the artist to seek comfort in her journey towards self-realization. "After Illusion” is curated by Eiman Elgibreen, to reflect on the history of Saudi Arabia and its identity. The team is guided by Project Advisor, Nada Shabout. The title “After Illusion” is inspired by a line from an ancient Arabic poem written by Zuhayr bin Abī Sūlmā (b.520 – d.609), in which he described his struggle to recognize what was “home” after being away for twenty years. Only ‘illusion’ helped the eighty-year-old poet recognize it – a state of mind that we fight during our search for the ‘truth’ but somehow it paves a path to it. Old Arabic poetry is cherished by many Saudis as an important substitute source of ‘truth’, inspiration and a resort for those who seek assurance. Eiman Elgibreen states: “Saudis have long been living in interesting times. Their complicated sociocultural history has forced them, and others, to be seen as interesting. There is a sense of lost cultural and historical agency due to the hegemony of global discourse. Their significance has been encapsulated within two narrow historical moments: the emergence of Islam and the discovery of oil, leaving them confused on how to perceive their history outside of those moments, particularly with the absence of visual evidence.” “After Illusion” is an exhibition that offers an attempt to meditate on the value of ‘uncertainty’ in opening new doors to self-awareness and transformation.” Saudi Arabia Pavilion, “After Illusion”.    ©farrenkopf
