Recorded live at the Comics Without Borders / Sans Frontières gathering at Rice University, this episode dives deep into international comics publishing, aesthetic risk-taking, and how underground networks drive a truly global comics culture. David Schilter, publisher and editor of Latvia's acclaimed kuš! comics, joins us alongside Pedro Vieira de Moura, Portuguese critic, writer, and co-founder of the bookstore/gallery Mundo Fantasma. We talk about how a small-format anthology changed Latvian comics forever, why RAW magazine changed Pedro's life, and how comics have always been a place for outsiders to find their people. It's about pornographic comics, lipstick in mirrors, misnumbered anthologies, institutional resistance, aesthetic weirdness, bookstores as public educators, and why no one in Latvia is publishing Maus. Kris and David are guestless as we discuss the week that was April 12-18, 1999.We start off by talking about Davey Boy Smith, as this was when he was stuck in a Calgary hospital in severe pain from a spinal infection and got fired by WCW. We talk about all the issues that he had leading up to this and what his future held. From there, we go to WCW proper for a wild week with a very newsworthy Nitro full of big matches and angles then a Thunder that was appropriately Thunder-esque. We also have all the wild drama that is par for the course in WCW in this era, featuring Arn Anderson having a pretty rough week, Eric Bischoff speaking on WCW Live, bad morale in the company and so much more.International is next, as Vader wins the Champion Carnival tournament in AJPW, Atsushi Onita goes back to school, Yuki Kondo becomes the King of Pancrase, and tons more. Then we go back to the United Status, where Paul Heyman speaks to the Torch about ECW's mounting financial issues while they are actually doing some decent house show business and producing some solid TV, plus news on TNN picking up a wrestling show, Randy Hales baring his soul on Memphis TV, and lots more.We then close with the WWF, as they make some roster cuts (sort of), and we go over why that is happening despite the record business they were doing at the time, plus a crazy episode of Monday Night Raw, Steve Austin being hit by a car (in real life), interesting quotes from members of company management in Raw Magazine, and a show-closing news item that is almost surely the most ominous closer in BTS history. This is a slam-packed show here, folks, so you definitely don't want to miss this!!!Timestamps:0:00:00 Davey Boy Smith0:23:29 WCW1:49:41 Japan: AJPW, NJPW, Atsushi Onita, BattlARTS, CAPTURE, IWA Japan, Pancrase, Arsion, & JWP2:24:19 Classic Commercial Break2:29:18 Halftime2:59:26 Latin America: AAA, CMLL, Tijuana, & WWC3:09:29 Other USA: NWA, ISPW, ECWA, ECW, TNN, Power Pro, MAW, Tor Berg/WNWA, & Portland3:46:09 WWF5:35:15 Patreon Preview: Owen Hart has zero fucks to give in his comments about Mike TysonTo support the show and get access to exclusive rewards like special members-only monthly themed shows, go to our Patreon page at Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets and become an ongoing Patron. This week we fulfill an interview wish that goes back to the beginning of the show; fitting for our 4 year anniversary. This week Aaron and Chris celebrate the 4 year anniversary of Decibel Geek with an in-depth conversation with Mark Slaughter. Currently promoting his new solo album produced by Michael Wagener, 'Reflections in a Rearview Mirror' Mark was kind enough to sit down in-person with Aaron, Chris, and Decibel Geek writer Billy Hardaway for a long-form talk on the new album, the history of Slaughter, and A LOT of discussion about his days working with Vinnie Vincent in the Invasion. Aaron and Chris put out a call a few weeks ago for listener questions for Mark and the listeners did not disappoint. Many of the questions made it into the interview including one that Mark deemed his favorite. The solicitor of that question wins an autographed print of Mark from the photoshoot for his new album. The photo was taken by friend of the show and past guest Chad Lee of Chad Lee Photography. Be sure to listen to the end because Mark gives you another opportunity to win a signed photo if you can be the first to submit an answer to feedback@decibelgeek.com. The Decibel Geek podcast wishes to thank Mark Slaughter for his time and his openness to everything that was asked. With a show that's been in existence for nearly 4 years and has covered numerous facets of rock and metal, you had to know this day would come. We think you'll like it anyway. This week Aaron and Chris set out to tackle a true challenge....finding songs from the genre known as Rap Rock that actually kick ass. This genre is picked apart and ridiculed by many rock and metal purists but your hosts aim this week to dig up some gems and prove that there's some good stuff even in midst of something they hate. Tracks from Rage Against the Machine, Clutch, Kid Rock, Incubus, Gwar, Body Count, The Deftones, Mudvayne and much, much more are included. We hope you'll listen with an open mind as we spin some rockin' riffs and righteous rhymes......otherwise, please come back next week. Dig it! Covering the second half of this controversial KISS album, Toby shares his memories of the tracking and mixing of the songs including the Gene Simmons-sung 'In My Head,' which was written by Gene along with Scott Van Zen and Jaime St. James of Black n' Blue. In this section of the discussion, Wright remembers pushing Simmons and bandmate Paul Stanley to record harmony vocals in the vein of Alice in Chains members Jerry Cantrell and Layne Staley; and how the attempt would fall short by comparison. Another track discussed in this hour-plus special is 'I Confess.' Wright reflects on a tense recording session involving a string section that was brought in to add a dark feel to the songs and how he had to get the classically-trained musicians to break convention to pull off the sound he was after. Other tracks covered in this Albums Unleashed special include the psychadelic-tinged 'In the Mirror,' the Black Sabbath-inspired track 'It Never Goes Away,' and one of the most unusual tracks in the KISS catalog; the Middle-Eastern sounding 'Seduction of the Innocent,' Most notably, however, is the discussion of the debut (and lone) KISS vocal of guitarist Bruce Kulick. This track had quite a history as Wright explains the numerous permutations it would take on during the tracking process (including a lead vocal take from Simmons). This track's autobiographical nature would play out as life would later imitate art in the form of the KISS reunion and guitarist Kulick and drummer Eric Singer would wind up unemployed. Toby Wright goes into great detail in this discussion of how Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley called a meeting during the overdub sessions for Carnival of Souls to break the news that they had been solicited with a multi-million dollar offer to put on the greasepaint and reunite with original KISS drummer and guitarist Peter Criss and Ace Frehley; respectively. The effect of the reunion announcement would have a catastrophic effect on the album; as it was immediately shelved by Mercury Records, leaked on the internet, and then, with very little fanfare, released by the record label in October of 1997. The Decibel Geek Podcast wants to thank Toby Wright for giving so much time in discussing a controversion, yet bittersweet, album in his massively successful discography. We hope you enjoy this 2 part Albums Unleashed special on KISS' Carnival of Souls. More Toby Wright! Official Website More COS Info! There's been a lot of talk in the KISS fan world about the original road crew. This week, we have one of them on to talk about the good old days. Jay "Hot Sam" Barth guests this week to discuss his time working for KISS during their rise to stardom. As front-of-house sound mixer, Hot Sam had a great seat to watch Gene, Paul, Ace, and Peter slay audiences on a nightly basis. In this discussion, Hot Sam discusses his time working with the band on the Dressed to Kill tour, the recording of KISS Alive!, the popularity of the band in his hometown of Detroit, and the changes that he witnessed during the Destroyer tour in 1976. Other members of the original KISS crew have released a book documenting the era entitled, 'Out on the Streets.' It can be purchased HERE The Decibel Geek podcast thanks Jay "Hot Sam" Barth for coming on the show and sharing his memories of working with KISS. We dig deep into the Decibel Geek vault for something never heard before. Chris and Aaron present a chat with former Dan Hartman group member Blanche Napoleon. The group, formed in the late 70's by Hartman (a former member of the Edgar Winter group) and included Napoleon on backing vocals, drummer Hilly Michaels, G.E. Smith, and a young, unknown guitarist named Vincent Cusano. The Hartman group had a Hot 100 disco hit in 'Instant Replay'; of which the promo video has gained some popularity in recent years due to the "interesting" choreography between Cusano and Smith. Blanche shares her memories of Vinnie during his musically formative years, the bond between the band members, Hartman's connection to other musical notables of the day, the disco nightlife of the late 70's in New York City and much more. Editor's Note: The interview portion of this episode was recorded in December of 2011. It was shelved at the time due to being too far out of demographic. Upon further reflection and a growing fanbase with diverse tastes, it's being released now. Apologies to Blanche Napoleon and her appearance on The Decibel Geek podcast is much appreciated. This week marks an anniversary that is anything but something to celebrate. That said, we pay tribute to a true metal icon and, more importantly, an amazing human being. Aaron and Chris return this week to pay tribute to the memory of Dimebag Darrell. The iconic guitarist was murdered onstage 10 years ago this week. Since then, a series of bike rides for charity have sprung up all over the United States. We had rock photographer and friend of Darrell's, Chad Lee, on the show as he was gearing up for the Nashville chapter event in September. Chris attended the ride and documented the process while later being joined by Aaron for the knockout metal concert. In this Dimebag tribute special, you'll hear first-hand how the day unfolded for Nashville's Ride for Dime event; from the bar-b-que before the ride and party that includes chats with Chad Lee, Steve Bumpus of Bumpus Harley Davidson (hosts for the event), Nancy Sayle (Rock for MS), and guitarist Nick Bowcott (Grim Reaper). The episode moves into the evening and features backstage talks with Sirius/XM deejay Jose Mangin as well as a lengthy talk with former Black Label Society guitarist Nick Catanese. It's a fly-on-the-wall perspective of a day that saw thousands of people coming together to help out charities and remember a metal legend and amazing person. We hope you dig it. Buy Music! One of our favorite past guests and friend of the show returns this week for a more personal reason. Todd Austin (aka Toddzilla) returns to the Decibel Geek Podcast this week and boy is he packing some great stories. If you don't remember, Toddzilla was Aaron and Chris' guest for Episode 113 - Roth-Era Van Halen Discussion. In that discussion, the guys picked favorite tunes from Eddie and co. but Toddzilla's stories were so memorable and entertaining, they elicited a lot of listeners asking for him to return. In this conversation, Todd shares some of stories of his long career in and around the music industry. Entertaining tales involving Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, Billy Gibbons, Ace Frehley, Vinnie Vincent, and Gene Simmons highlight just a portion of the talk. Other subjects touched upon include the growth of the Nashville rock music scene, a strange encounter with Johnny Cash, and details of a documentary in-production covering Toddzilla's life. Two years ago, while on a take a half day off following a photography convention, I ran into Art Spiegelman on the streets of Cologne, Germany. Actually, I spotted his wife first, and it took me a moment to place the familiar face so completely out of context — New Yorker editor and former RAW Magazine partner in crime, Francoise Mouly. I reintroduced myself, having interviewed Art a year or two prior for a HEEB Magazine cover story. Spiegelman nodded his recognition and invented me to a talk his was giving at a modern art museum later that night. Naturally, I obliged. It was one of the more surreal experiences of my comics-adjacent life. What began as a conversation about the cartoonist’s beloved holocaust book Maus, soon transitioned into a slideshow featuring holocaust denial gag strips Spiegelman had drawn, answering then-Iranian president Amedinijad’s call in the wake of the uproar over the massively controversial 2005 Dutch Muhammed cartoons. Watching the German audience crack up at the work offered a fascinating glimpse at the coping mechanisms of a country whose psyche is forever changed by the topics Spiegelman has unflinchingly embraced. It was also a reminder that, along with being a vocal pundit in the ever-shifting give and take between “high” and “low” art, Spiegelman has long been a showman. His new touring act “Wordless” is the most direct manifestation of these two qualities. The event mixes multimedia, lecture, a live jazz band and conversations revolving around the influential if often forgotten pictorial novels of artists like Lynd Ward. Spiegelman spoke with me ahead of his upcoming tour about Ward’s on-going impact on his own work, the power of the visual medium and the often questionable pursuit of multimedia comics.
