In today's episode of Transmit Safety, we're going to be diving into the fascinating world of the vagus nervous system and its connection to overall health and well-being. For a few years now, I've been dealing with some health issues. Nothing alarming, but daily life-impacting. Regular doctors kept on telling me that I was fine. I would go for tests and the results would say that I was fine. There's nothing wrong with me. But I knew something wasn't right. So I kept on searching for an answer. This summer I landed in a virtual workshop about gut health, and one of the sessions was on the vagus nerve. I knew that we had it, but it didn't really click for me until I was sitting in this session with a subject matter expert about how important understanding the vagus nervous system really is. And I want to share that with you.Stick around until the end because I have a relaxing guided breathing practice for you to try to help you integrate this knowledge into your daily routine. In this episode, you'll learn:What the vagus nervous system isThe vagus nerve's role in your body's stress responseHow to tap into the power of the vagus nervous systemThe benefits of a breathing practiceThe Transmit Safety Podcast is here to help health and safety practitioners achieve a holistic approach to workplace health and safety so they can become impactful leaders and put the value of safety into action.Resources and linksToday's episode was sponsored by Transmit Safety, a consulting business where I help streamline and simplify health and safety management systems through education, program development, audits, and coaching. The metaphor I like to use the most for trauma is it's like a mobile app running in the background. It drains your battery and keeps giving itself permissions unless you actively limit them. You could think of it as well-intentioned malware that was baked into your phone. What's the goal of the trauma app? Restore a sense of safety. But here is the thing. The trauma app can't tell the difference between feeling safe and being safe. It overrides your true self and your ability to act in accordance with your values and that's why it makes you engage in behaviors that create an illusion of safety at that moment but are actually not safe for you. Join me in today's podcast episode as I explore how the trauma app works, its impact on your daily life, how you can stop it from hijacking your brain, and much more!In this episode, I talk about:What is traumaNot all traumas are traumaticWhy do we cling to behaviors that we know are counterproductivePTSD doesn't always look like shaking on the floor and panickingUnexpected parenting situations that will trigger youHow to deal with a child's meltdowns Why we don't act in accordance with our values when we are in a stress responseHow to restore your sense of safety when you're in a stress response Why are boundaries confusing for many post-traumatic parentsConnect with me on Instagram @dr.koslowitzpsychology and for full show notes and more resources visit www.drrobynkoslowitz.com/2023/05/01/how-to-stop-the-…cking-your-brain/

Do you trust that our public health officials are telling you the truth? I for one find myself very skeptical these days. As many who've listened to the DTH podcast for long know, I've been highly critical of the government's response to the pandemic from the very beginning. How does someone like me have a conversation with someone who had direct influence on the government's response to the pandemic? Not so long ago, I would say that the conversation would never happen, because my attitude would not have allowed it. The Truth and Trust Project may be one of the most important endeavors of my life. Several times over the past several months, I asked the question, "if you could ask Dr. Francis Collins or Dr. Tony Fauci a question, what would that question be?". For that question, I received nothing but negative responses. The most common response was some variation of, "I wouldn't waste my time, they wouldn't listen anyway"... I asked the question because I am currently involved in a "Truth and Trust Project" with Dr. Francis Collins.Dr. Francis Collins is a physician-geneticist, Dr. Collins took office as the 16th NIH director on August 17, 2009, after being appointed by President Barack Obama. In 2017, he was asked to continue in his role by President Donald Trump, and in 2021, by President Joe Biden. As such, Dr. Francis Collins played an instrumental role in the government's response to the pandemic. There are many things with respect to the government's response to the pandemic that Francis and I disagree on vehemently. As men who dearly love our country and individuals who both hold strong to our values, we also recognize that there needs to be a better way forward. This starts by understanding that contentious topics don't have to result in a contentious conversations. The only way we can expect as a country to rebuild Truth and Trust is to have conversations with those whom we disagree. The only way to get results from those conversations is to actually LISTEN to those with whom we disagree and look for the humility and humanity in their position. In this episode, Part 1 of 2, Francis and I discuss:How we met (origin of The Truth and Trust Project)1st days of the pandemic and thoughts of those in charge of responseHow virus and information has evolvedMistakes madePresident Biden getting Covid-19 and his past messaging on vaccine Vaccine efficacy and how that messaging has evolvedWhat have you done today to make your life a better life? What have you done today to make the world a better place? The world is a better place if we are better people, and that begins with each of us leading a better life. See The Upside - Uplifting conversations about real life after divorce
Have you ever asked yourself - who do you WANT to be? The incredible thing is that we are able to change this answer anytime we want to. We just have to rewire our own brains to believe it. Bob Doyle; teacher, speaker, writer, coach and integral partner with the famous book and movie the Secret, has built his life's work around the law of attraction. But now Bob has shifted his viewpoint to integrate an additional element involving the science of our brains. It mixes in such a tangible expansive way with the mystical side of believe and attracting the life you want to live. Our brains create our reality and there is incredible power of that. In this fascinating interview we discuss:How living your dreams has nothing to do with what you deserveHow your brain can change when you give it new informationIt all begins with getting clear about who you want to be (it's going to feel weird at first!)What the biggest roadblock to change really isHow Bob got involved with the book the SecretWhat the Law of Attraction is and how it worksThe one key element missing in the Law of AttractionHow disruption works to rewire the triggers in your brainHow all success comes with a journey and creates the expertise we need to manage our successHow to enjoy your life more What subconscious wiring could be holding you back and how to change it A simple way to change a trigger to a positive responseHow to get comfortable with failures and embracing the feedback that setbacks provideWhy letting go of old stories is so hard and why it's important to be uncomfortable in the process of letting them goThis conversation will get you thinking about the ways you want to change and how you want to be living. It's so inspiring and hopeful to realize that we really CAN have the life we want. And the power really is all within. Gill Mann is a psychotherapist and author. She started working life as a lawyer but finally found the courage to follow her heart and re-train as a therapist - and has never regretted it for a moment. She has worked within the NHS, a university counselling service and in private practice. Longer-term work – with its potential for changing lives - is her passion. Writing has always been Gill's other passion but in 2014 it became a lifeline. She learned that her son, Sam had died while travelling overseas. For two years she kept a journal, writing about him and her grieving. She found herself addressing Sam too - there was so much still to say. Another bereaved mother read Gill's journal, and urged her to publish it, saying it had made her feel much less alone. Gill's memoir, A Song Inside, was published by Retreat West Books in July 2020.I was introduced to Gill by another of my podcast guests, Claire Dyer. Reading her book brought up so many questions for me and I wondered how she coped with all the unanswered questions she might have I think when people hear the word Schizophrenia, they are a little scared by that label, so it was really refreshing to have an open discussion to what it looked like for her as a mother with a son who had that diagnosis We also discuss her grief journey and readjusting to her world that will forever be changed. Some key points from our interview:How she feels that unbroken is about surviving even though the trauma of losing her son, Sam, has had a huge impact How she was determined not to let her trauma build a brittle shell around her to avoid her pain How despite her concerns about Sam, it would take a meeting with several family members for her to be listened to and for him to be diagnosed with schizophreniaHow writing and talking about Sam helps to end the schizophrenia stigma How as a mother she struggled with guilt and regret and feels it's a natural responseHow she had to learn and process her complicated grief through her new changed world Website: https://www.gillmannauthor.co.ukHosted by Madeleine Black, the show will share stories of all the amazing people Madeleine has met on her own journey as an author/speaker and these stories will heal, motivate, inspire and bring hope when they share their wisdom and knowledge with her.She really believes in the power that comes when we share our stories, that in fact we are not story tellers but story healers. Nick Hudson is an actuary with broad international experience in finance, who has settled into a career as a private equity investor. He is a man of wide-ranging interests—an avid reader of canonical literature, a classical music aficionado, and an enthusiastic amateur ornithologist. He has been invited to speak on various topics including epistemology, corporate governance, investment management, and more recently, the Covid 19 pandemic.Nick is the founder and chairman of Pandemics Data and Analytics (PANDA), a South African organization founded in April 2020 with the mission of promoting open science, human agency, and courageous societies. However, in just that short period of time, the organization now has members from more than 30 countries. They aim to empower the public with accurate information thereby enabling individuals to exercise freedom of choice and preserve human liberties and free societies, which are at more threat now than at anytime since World War II. PANDA is composed of a group of multi-disciplinary professionals who perceived the global reaction to Covid, and lockdown in particular, as overwrought and damaging to the point of causing a great tear in the fabric of society. They are politically and economically independent, and seek to develop science-based explanations and test them against international data that can then be used as a proven foundation for recommendations to governments and other institutions to develop actual science-based policy.PANDA stands for open science and rational debate, for replacing flawed science with good science and for retrieving liberty and prosperity from the clutches of a dystopian “new normal”.Join us as we explore: How Nick could no longer stay quiet knowing about the deception around the Covid 19 pandemicWhy there is so much common ground between people of varying political views when it comes to the existential threat of the pandemic responseHow the pandemic response facilitated the biggest transfer of wealth in the history of the worldThe capture of government, academic and media by corporate forcesHow the “science” being reported in the media is corrupted and censored Why lockdowns don't work, haven't worked and will never workThe politicization of everything and whyThe wrongheadedness of mass vaccination, PCR tests, lockdowns, masksIf people with natural immunity from prior infection should get vaccinatedHow this is a pandemic of the unvaccinated is pure propaganda Why variants are likely to be the reason for the variant accelerationWhat you can do right now to unplug from the COVID narrativeWhat the true evil is now, and no it's not COVID19Nick's message for everyone – it's time for courageIs there hope for the future of science and public institutions?Support the show on Patreon:As much as we love doing it, there are costs involved and any contribution will allow us to keep going and keep finding the best guests in the world to share their health expertise with you.
