Hi listeners! Do you have a question about Alabama politics? Consider emailing us a voice recording asking your question to our email, apwproducer@gmail.com, and we may play it on air! This week, Josh and David open with a discussion of the Alabama Legislature and their most recent absurd activity — banning diversity, equity, and inclusion programs at colleges and universities. State Rep. Sam Jones zooms in to discuss the prospects of gambling and gaming legislation and the Legislature's anti-DEI bill. In the close, the Alabama Political Reporter's Jacob Holmes zooms in to discuss his reporting about the public library insanity going on in Prattville, and Josh and David name this week's Rightwing Nut of the Week. At a point in history where there is great turmoil and danger it is important to define the factors that lead to evil. Evan Longin from a postmodern philosophical standpoint, has helped us understand those factors which bring evil into our lives. Evil is not an entity, nor does it reside within the internal functioning of an individual. Rather, it is a perspective created by the powers in authority to maintain control. This perspective has been used for centuries to control and oppress populations that are deemed inferior. Author of “The Roots of Evil: A Postmodern Exploration of the Unintended Consequences of Civilization,” which is much more daunting than the actual text. https://www.linkedin.com/in/evan-longin-113749252/http://www.yourlotandparcel.org

Derrick's journey of public service started when he joined the Navy at the age of 18 and served for 26 years, retiring as a Navy SEAL Senior Chief with 5 combat deployments and several others to troubled areas in the world. His first combat deployment was to Bosnia Herzegovina immediately following the signing of the Dayton Accords. Derrick Van Orden continued his service with multiple combat tours to Afghanistan and Iraq. Additionally, he served in the Horn of Africa, Asia, Europe, and South and Central America. During his tour in Europe in 2012, under the Obama administration, he was responsible for planning Special Operations contingency operations for the European Continent. He lost close colleagues ⏤the tragic killing of his former teammate Ty Woods and fellow SEAL Glen Doherty during the terrorist attack on the embassy annex in Benghazi, Libya. Congressman Van Orden serves on the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs, Agriculture, Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. Key Topics: ⏤ The national security crisis on America's southern border, the waves of millions of illegal immigrants entering the United States, and the heavy economic toll on American citizens and taxpayers across the country. Newsweek report: “With illegal immigration now costing $150.7 billion annually, the burden inevitably trickles down to the taxpayer. Individually, the FAIR study found that each illegal alien or their U.S.-born child costs the U.S. $8,776 annually.” ⏤Israel's war against Iran-backed Hamas and Congressman Derrick Van Orden's visit to Israel right after October 7, 2023. ⏤ The Iran threat | International Atomic Energy Agency released a report saying Iran “increased its production of highly enriched uranium, reversing a previous output reduction from mid-2023. Iran had increased its output of 60 percent enriched uranium to a rate of about nine kilograms (20 pounds) a month since the end of November [2020]. Enrichment levels of around 90% are required for use in a nuclear weapon.” ⏤ The Biden Administration's pressures on Israel for a ceasefire and the recent announcement of a new White House Executive Order targeting Israeli citizens in the West Bank also known as Judea and Samaria. ⏤ Addressing the Biden administration's failed foreign policies when reviewing Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the chaotic withdrawal of the US military from Afghanistan and the Middle East entering a new phase of instability and expanding conflicts. ⏤ US bases in the Middle East under attack | Three American soldiers killed in Jordan | US Navy vessels targeted by Iran-backed Houthi terror group. BORN IN THE SECOND CENTURY continues its miniseries on the Gospel of John as a derivative work, with its author aware of the prior Gospels of Mark, Matthew, and Luke.Host Chris Palmero follows the progress of Jesus from Galilee - where he urges a confused audience to eat his flesh and drink his blood - to the outskirts of Jerusalem, where he performs the Raising of Lazarus.Anyone who listens to this episode of Born in the Second Century can learn about why the general public never seems to learn anything new about Jesus; about the origins of the strange new ritual in the Gospel of John; why some Christians thought that the Beloved Disciples would never die; why the middle chapters of john are so chaotic; why John doesn't seem to think that Jesus was born in Bethlehem; and about the several rewrites of the Lazarus Miracle.Opening reading: An academic paper by Hugo Mendez about the Gospel of John being a forgery has got the usually staid Mainstream Theologians extremely excited.Support the showPatreon: www.patreon.com/borninthesecondcenturyWebsite: facebook.com/BornInTheSecondCenturyE-mail: secondcenturypodcast@gmail.comMusic: Pompeii Gray on Apple Music, Spotify, SoundCloud

A boy who committed a horrifying act by murdering five members of his family, including an infant and two young children, has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The judge characterized the crime as "draped in unmitigated evil." Mason, who was just 14 years old at the time, fatally shot each family member in the head at their Elkmont home. The victims were John Wayne Sisk, 38, his wife Mary Sisk, 35, and their children: 6-year-old Grayson, 4-year-old Aurora, and 6-month-old Colson. Initially, Mason claimed that he was playing video games in the basement on September 2, 2019, when he heard gunshots and saw a car driving away. However, he later confessed to the murders, providing detectives with a potential motive during a preliminary hearing. Now 18 years old, Mason received his sentence after an Alabama jury found him guilty in April of multiple charges of capital murder for the 2019 slayings of his father, stepmother, and three younger siblings. Due to his age at the time of the crimes, Mason was spared the death penalty. Circuit Judge Chadwick Wise deemed Mason's offense as "ghastly, disturbing, and draped in unmitigated evil," justifying the harshest punishment allowed by law. Mason showed no clear reaction to the sentence and did not make a statement in court. Following the judgment, Brian C.T. Jones, the district attorney for Limestone County, issued a written statement to the media, expressing deep concern about the defendant, stating, "I've prosecuted a lot of people in my career, and I can tell you that out of all of those people, only four out of five people scare the hell out of me, and he's at the top of my list." In this episode, Kimberly interviews Donna Jackson Nakawaza about her latest book “Girls on the Brink: Helping Our Daughters Thrive in an Era of Increased Anxiety, Depression, and Social Media.” Donna's book explains recent research behind the increase of significant mental health issues among girls and young women. Whereas neuroscience research only ever examined male brains and bodies, this book overviews recent research on females and how feelings of unsafety, threat, high expectations, and algorithms on social media heavily contribute to this increase. They unpack the ways in which the female brain stress responses are connected to immunity and overall well-being, as well as the myriad stressors young girls in particular face today. Last, they discuss strategies for parents to create a sense of connection, attunement, and safety with their children to mitigate these environmental and cultural stressors.   Bio Donna Jackson Nakazawa is an award-winning journalist and internationally-recognized speaker whose work explores the intersection of neuroscience, immunology, and human emotion. Her mission is to translate emerging science in ways that help those with chronic conditions find healing. It's just going to cause an avalanche we already have, and make it worse. The crisis doesn't begin when title 42 ends, we're already in the throes, we're already in the middle of a crisis. In the first 22 months of this administration, over 5.5 million immigrants have illegally entered the country, and over a million of them have gotten way.” Morgan comments that the Biden administration is completely unaware to the fact that title 42 doesn't increase the national security threat, saying “we're already in the middle of a national security threat, within the past 22 months there have been apprehensions of people from 160 different countries, over 98 illegal aliens have been apprehended on the terror screening database in this last fiscal year alone.” Saying, “we're already in the middle of the worst unmitigated self-inflicted border crisis in our lifetime. Crime continues to plague major cities with progressive prosecutors. According to a Wall Street Journal editorial, a New York City bodega employee has been charged with murder after protecting himself from an attacker. Weddings are endlessly fascinating. They carry with them immense baggage - not just the hope of perfection, but the expectation of it. Unmitigated joy is assumed as the default feeling at a wedding even though no such thing has ever happened. We have never in our adult lives felt uncomplicated happiness, and yet we saddle weddings with this burden.I had a mentor who would say that, as a pastor, funerals were easier than weddings. He said that at funerals people were allowed to feel anything, were allowed to have complicated, strange, hard, sad feelings, were allowed to laugh and cry and love and mourn and grieve and hope all at once. And I remember him saying at a funeral there is usually a coffin or an urn or a picture where we can focus all the complexity of our emotions in that moment. But, he said, at a wedding, everyone was supposed only to be happy. Never mind if they'd recently been divorced or widowed, if they'd loved and lost, or if they wanted to be married but weren't. Never mind if they couldn't find clothes that fit, or if they weren't sure what they thought about the institution of marriage or if they were uncomfortable in this church: Pure happiness is what they should feel
