Howard, George and Ahsan look back at a tough week for City, and forward to a tough match on Saturday. The curious case of Jack Grealish - and a lot more besides.
In this rib-tickling episode of Join the Docs, Professor Jonathan Sackier and Doctor Nigel Guest take listeners on a wild ride through the zany world of sports mishaps, where the unexpected meets the utterly ridiculous. As always, their sharp wit and infectious banter set the tone, making even the most jaw-dropping, or finger-ripping injuries feel like punchlines in an elaborate comedy routine. How can athletes go from hero to zero in seconds? The show kicks off with a lineup of pre-game blunders and over-the-top celebrations that went hilariously wrong, proving that even the most serious athletes aren't immune to the occasional silly accident. From tripping over shoelaces during a grand entrance to attempting a victory dance that ends with a tumble, this episode is a reminder that in sports, things can go from perfect to perfectly disastrous in the blink of an eye.How does one mistake an iron for a phone? One of the standout tales in this episode involves a baseball player who somehow managed to do just that. Yes, you heard that right—a moment of distraction turned into a face-burning catastrophe that would go down in sports history as one of the most bizarre injuries imaginable. As painful as this, and others sound, it is baffling how people do such things t, you'll find it hard not to laugh out loud!.How far is too far when celebrating? There's the unforgettable story of a soccer player who, in the heat of celebrating a goal, lost more than just his composure—he lost a finger! It's a tale so ridiculous, you'd think it was fiction, but the beauty of this episode is that all these mishaps are gloriously true. Sackier and Guest are baffled by the circumstances and you will be too.Why do these stories matter? As the episode progresses, The Docs take a step back from the silliness to reflect on the importance of safety in sports. While the stories may seem light-hearted, these mishaps serve as a reminder that sports, while thrilling, can also be fraught with unexpected dangers. From minor injuries to more serious accidents, the hosts highlight the need for precautions—albeit with a comedic twist. They point out that athletes, in their quest for glory, can sometimes overlook basic safety measures, leading to moments that are more farcical than triumphant. What's the lesson here? This episode reminds us that no matter how skilled or experienced you are, sports will always have the potential for unpredictable mishaps. And sometimes, those mishaps are exactly what we need to keep things in perspective.Whether you're an athlete with your own catalogue of embarrassing injuries, or simply someone who enjoys a good laugh at the expense of others (in the nicest possible way, of course), this episode is one you won't want to miss. Sackier and Guest bring their A-game, delivering both hilarity and insights in equal measure. So, tune in for a whirlwind of absurdity, and remember: always play it safe, or you might just end up as the next punchline.—--DISCLAIMER: The views and opinions expressed on Join the Docs are those of Dr. Nigel Guest, Jonathan Sackier and other people on our show. Well folks, this is the first official episode of the new Falconry Follies series, which will be available to Extras members from now on! As mentioned before, the inspiration of this series is so we can all learn from each other's mistakes, which everyone and their birds should hopefully benefit from. Listen in as Aaron Kincaid and Casey Everett, previous guests and hosts of the Sporting Chance podcast, join up remotely to talk about mistakes we've made in and out of the field. Being as the subject at hand can be both simultaneously frustrating and lighthearded, you'll hear some colorful language and content at times, but hey, it's all part of what we deal with, and hear, on a daily basis in falconry! If you want to see the fully unedited video version, head to the “Would You Like to Support?” link at falconrychronicles.com, and sign up for the Extras membership at buymeacoffee.com. You'll also get to hear the first full episode of the Molting Tails series, which will start off featuring rats... and those who hunt them! This particular week of the Falconry Chronicles Podcast brings you multiple episodes, the first of which is a two part episode that features Aaron Kincaid of Gamekeeper Dachshunds, and of course, Sporting Chance podcast! The first part of this recording was made earlier this year during the New Jersey meet, where we met in person for the first time, and had the chance to be able to run our dogs together. After, we sat down that evening and talked about several of the usual topics, as well as ratting. We later recorded the second part of the episode while in Washington, DC, where we met to go ratting, as well as attempt to pair our dogs for breeding. That trip inspired the Molting Tails ratting content, which will be released as part of the Extras membership. This was a fun episode, and will be followed up later in the week with the first episode of the Falconry Follies series, which will continued to be offered via Extras membership after this first episode. That episode will feature both Aaron and Casey, and will be available later this week, so keep an eye out for it! The series of episodes inspired by the use of dachshunds in falconry that were recorded in New Jersey last year are almost concluded, with Harrison Dalby being one of the last from the Maryland/NJ area yet to be released. Since this recording took place, Harrison has had a full season under his belt with his goshawk and dachshund, and he has also added a lurcher to the team recently as well. In this conversation, he discusses falconry from a newer and younger falconer's perspective, what it's been like having his own business from an early age and how that has also affected his falconry, and how his mindset has pushed his personal goals higher over time. Booze, sex, social media - what's your poison? Taking the time to consider when we have an unhealthy relationship with 'people, places, things and situations' is an extremely valuable process to go through. Former England and Arsenal footballer Tony Adams set up the Sporting Chance clinic, and is an expert at the process people gripped by addiction of any kind can go through to find freedom. He talks about sitting with uncomfortable feelings, puncturing ego - as well as the growing issue of social media and smartphones.Champion Thinking: How To Find Success Without Losing Yourself - is now on general release. How can South Africa unlock the potential of its incredible sporting talent pool? According to Brad Bing - founder and managing director of Sporting Chance, an NGO focused on youth sports development and health education in South Africa - “South Africa keeps underselling itself as a top, top sporting nation.” Speaking to BizNews, Bing discusses the country's pool of “incredible natural talent and flair” and the steps that SA's sporting structures need to take to get the most out of it. Bing calls for more private sector and government investment in youth sports development at grassroots level, arguing that the return on this investment would be hugely beneficial to the economy. Beyond the benefit to the economy, Bing cites the impact of sport on national morale, “If our teams are doing well and the national psyche is at a huge high… The more people feel good about themselves, the more successful they're going to be.” And on the work of Sporting Chance and the need for kids to lead an active lifestyle, “it's absolutely vital that South African children understand the importance of learning how to be healthy and active.” - Patrick Kidd

On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul and Rebecca Wheele are joined by Joe Howe and Tom Michler, to talk about why it's so important to give youth a sporting chance in life. KEY TAKEAWAYS The multitude of benefits that a child can gain from the experience of being given a sporting chance in life. These include the socialization, the feeling of being – that they belong – is so important for our programme, that activity itself. But, for Joe and I, once you become a part of the St. Louis soccer community you're part of it forever, and it's a wonderful experience of community. We saw a gap with the pay-to-play model, a lot of children that just wouldn't get that opportunity and we knew what the game had done for us, we really wanted to fill that gap. We've both played on teams where there was a lot of talent but it didn't always work. It works when there's an orchestration and you have that experience and success, that's a very powerful experience. The experience of belonging really grounds you and when you see those guys years later it's alive and well in you. That's what we're looking to provide via the field; a sense of belonging while playing sports and having fun also. There's a lot of groups teaching soccer. The important thing is how we go about it and what we're emphasizing in the setting. My background is in mental health and more and more we pay attention to the environment a child is growing up in. The nature vs nurture argument has really moved into environment vs genetics. Our intention is to create a particular environment intentionally that is inclusive, safe and fun. You can't coach every kid the same. Some kids respond to you challenging them and some kids not so much, they can be shy and need coaxing into it. You have to notice that, and some kids really have a load they're carrying so you really have to watch it and really work with them and be conscientious of what they're going through. BEST MOMENTS ‘Let the game be the teacher not only for soccer but for life.' ‘The great thing about sport is it's the great equalizer, if you can play you can play and it doesn't matter where you're from.' ‘We build our goals wider, purposefully, to promote scoring. When a child has the experience of scoring a goal and they tell us about it, you see it in their eyes. From then on that child gets more assertive both in the play and with other kids around them too.' ‘Nothing beats when you teach a kid a new skill and you see the lights go on in them, that's the greatest thing ever and makes it all worth it.' In this last episode of the second season of the podcast, our guest Joanne O'Riordan is the epitome of everything what a woman is about - a powerful, extraordinary woman whose attitude to life is inspiring for us all and who is breaking down barriers for women and the disabled community. Joanne is a broadcaster, sports journalist and activist who was born with a rare condition known as Total Amelia meaning she was born without all four limbs, one of only seven people worldwide with the condition. When was born, doctors felt her life would be limited but Joanne's family wanted her to grow up with the same opportunities as everyone else, instilling a philosophy in Joanne of no limbs, no limits, the title of an excellent documentary about her early life. Joanne became known for her activism when she was just fifteen and she challenged the then Taoiseach Enda Kenny about cuts to the budget for disability payments and a year later she spoke at a UN summit in New York where she famously said 'I do not look at the word impossible and see impossible. I look at the word and my life and say I'm Possible'. Now twenty seven, Joanne's passion for sport has led to a flourishing career as a sports journalist for the Irish Times and she recently broadcast the documentary A Sporting Chance about equal opportunities for women in sport. It was absolute delight to meet Joanne as her personality and infectious laugh filled the room and I did my best to keep up with her quick wit as we talk about everything from our shared personality traits as Taureans, life plans, splitting opinions in her journalism and why its important to just be yourself. Alcohol & drugs are seen as societal norms in this day and age. People even react with concern if you choose not to drink at a social occasion… this is something that still astonishes me and I believe there is an underlying issue in todays society with people living for the weekend and just getting through the working week to then escape their issues through drugs and alcohol on a weekend. In todays podcast I sit down with personal trainer & ex pro footballer Alex Kitchen to discuss his issues with alcohol & drug addiction. You might know him currently as one of the most eye-catching dancers on Strictly Come Dancing, but Tony Adams is an Arsenal and England football legend. For a significant proportion of his time as one of England's most successful footballers, Tony Adams was also stuck in the grip of alcoholism. He got clean in 1996, and proceeded to set up the Sporting Chance clinic – to help thousands of other people facing addiction. The contribution he has made to the wellbeing of others is immense. In this bitesize episode Tony explains how rife addiction is. So many people have problematic relationships with substances and behaviours – even thinking itself - as a way to avoid uncomfortable feelings. **Follow/message me:Website: simonmundie.com Instagram https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/Twitter https://twitter.com/simonmundie Hosted on Acast. It's 1970s America. President Nixon has signed Title IX into law, a bill that's about to upend the world of women's rights. In DC, a young, ambitious researcher is figuring out that Title IX has a very special application: women's sports. In Ruston, Louisiana, a 19-year-old girl is walking up to the door of her university president's office, pleading for a women's basketball team. She'll get one, and the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters will go on to be one of the strongest teams in the country. These are the early years of Title IX, and they're basically the wild west.

The MyLife Podcast - Wellbeing Conversations with Jarlath Regan
In our first episode, Jarlath welcomes Oisín McConville, All-Ireland winning Gaelic footballer with Armagh and Crossmaglen Rangers, and addiction counsellor with Sporting Chance. While many will know Oisín from his football successes, and as a familiar voice and face in GAA sports punditry and analysis, he is also one of Ireland's strongest advocates for recovery from gambling addiction; a struggle he faced himself for 16 years. In this episode, we hear Oisín's own personal story of recovery from gambling addiction and the impact both addiction and recovery have had on his life. Host, Jarlath Regan, and Oisín chat about how to support a loved one through addiction, common misconceptions about therapy, as well as the challenges to mental wellbeing that the pandemic has brought to our lives. Oisín also shares the practices he has found helpful in maintaining his own wellbeing and balance in his daily life. Recounting his experiences of addiction with characteristic honesty, this conversation is as informative as it is engaging, with Oisín bringing us all to a better understanding via his own unique story, of what a person struggling with addiction goes through. Female athletes faced brutal choices as allied forces withdrew from Afghanistan - to flee their homes and country or to stay and possibly abandon all hope of pursing their sporting dreams. Some made it onto those final flights out of the country, others faced dangerous journeys across borders with their friends and families. BBC journalist Sue Mitchell examines what has been happening to those who escaped and to the team mates they have left behind. Sue has been following the fortunes of teenage football players settling into new lives in the UK and female athletes stuck in limbo in Pakistan. When the UK Government announced it was granting asylum to the Afghanistan girls development youth football team there was relief that the teenagers could continue to play. Weeks on from that decision the girls are still in Pakistan awaiting visas, new homes and training opportunities. The uncertainty is compounded by stories of brutal acts committed against female athletes still in Afghanistan and worries about family members they have left behind. Kashif Siddiqi, the co-founder of charity Football for Peace, played a leading role in helping the girls flee Afghanistan. He said their perilous journey involved traveling in small groups and crossing the border wearing burqas. He is optimistic that sport can help them rebuild their lives and settle in communities linked by football. In Portugal a group of girl soccer players who were part of the Afghanistan under 15 and under 17 programs are already adjusting to their new lives. They are being helped by the former captain of the Afghanistan women's soccer team, Farkhunda Muhtaj, who was already acutely aware of how difficult things were for the girls even before the Taliban returned to power. She fears that girls left behind will never play again. Those fears have recently been compounded by reports that a member of the Afghanistan women's youth volleyball team has been beheaded by the Taliban in Kabul. Former team player, Zaharia Fayazi, relays the increasing anxiety she and others feel about those left behind.

Arsenal and England legend Tony Adams has done as much in his career to challenge the stigma around addiction as he has to make footballing history. From becoming sober very publicly back in the 90s, to setting up Sporting Chance, a charity that provides mental health support to current and former professional athletes, he's made it his mission to help others by sharing his story. This Addiction Awareness Week, Bryony has teamed up with Action on Addiction and the Forward Trust to bring you a conversation each day tackling a different element of addiction. Because even though we are slowly breaking down the stigma around discussing mental health, addiction - sadly - remains a taboo, even though we will all know someone touched by it.Tony tells Bryony how following a 12-step programme changed his life, how the new generation of footballers is battling a very different addiction, and why he's heading back to Chelmsford prison, three decades after serving time there.Action on Addiction is a UK charity providing support to people who need rehab, as well as a wealth of resources for those battling addiction issues: https://www.actiononaddiction.org.uk |Tony's charity, Sporting Chance, can be found here: https://www.sportingchanceclinic.com/ |You can find more information about organisations that offer free and confidential support at the end of this episode.Read Bryony's columns: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/authors/bryony-gordon/ |For 30 days' free access to The Telegraph: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/madworld |Follow Bryony on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bryonygordon/ |See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Before transitioning, Kirsti Miller was a world champion and a multi-sport sensation in her Australian hometown of Wagga Wagga, as well as being the toughest prison governor in the correctional system. After transitioning, hormone treatments saw her go from over 100 kilos to under 60 as the supposed advantages of having once inhabited a male body quickly ebbed away. She joined me to talk about the realities facing trans people - especially women - in sport, and how education rather than fear is key to understanding what we need to do next.

Alasdair Hooper hosts the third Mental Health Awareness Week special episode with commentator Chris Murphy on addiction recovery, depression and Sporting Chance. Chris knows what it’s like to decide to make the unthinkable decision. At the heart of it was a crippling gambling addiction, after first placing a bet at the age of 17, as well as a battle with depression. For years the gambling and the depression consumed him and it eventually culminated in Chris deciding to take his own life. Thankfully that unsuccessful attempt sparked things into action and led to his road to recovery. But recovery is tough, really tough, and if there’s one key message Chris wants to get there you don’t just magically get better. There are relapses, those battles still linger, but considering where Chris is now he has made some inspiring progress. Chris is also the Gambling and Education Facilitator at Sporting Chance, the charity that was set up by former Arsenal Captain Tony Adams who himself battled with addiction. It provides services to professional sportspeople who are in need of mental health support, whether that is addiction related or anything else, and it has proved to be a vital lifeline for so many. This episode is a really powerful listen, as Chris goes into depth about what happened to him, but there is so much to take away by listening to his story. If you are struggling with your mental health here are some organisations who can help Samaritans: Phone 116 123, 24 hours a day, or email jo@samaritans.org, in confidence Childline: Phone 0800 1111. This week's podcast focusses on the subject of mental health in tennis. During the Australian Open, ATP Tennis Radio commentator Chris Bowers was fortunate enough to sit down with Australian tennis player Thanasi Kokkinakis, who opened up about the mental health issues that he's gone through as a result of time away from the game due to injury and illness. We hear that extended chat and then Chris and fellow commentator, Peter Marcato discuss some of the points raised in the discussion. Later on in the programme we also air a recent feature from the ATP Uncovered show which focussed on Swedish tennis player Robin Soderling's own battles with mental health. The feature, which was which originally was broadcast as part of the ATP and WTA series, Tennis United, gave presenters Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Vasek Pospisil the opportunity to delve further into the subject. Peter and Chris also mention the efforts that the ATP have made to help support players who may be struggling with aspects of mental health, by linking up with both the Sporting Chance organisation and Headspace. With Sporting Chance, players have access to their 24/7 hotline through phone, text or email and following the initial outreach, are referred to Sporting Chance's network of therapists, all experienced at working with elite sportspeople (including the Premier League, the Professional Crickets' Association and the Football Association) who provide virtual appointments for the players. Headspace gives members access to Headspace's Plus subscription. There is no cost for either of these services to ATP members. Finally, this conversation is meant as an open discussion about the various issues surrounding players health and wellbeing, but the views stated in the programme are those of the presenters, who are independent contractors and not necessarily those of the ATP.

Sporting Chance is the world's leading charity providing mental health services to sportspeople and was founded by former Arsenal and England football captain Tony Adams. You might've seen a BBC Sport article this week, in which he said that ‘gambling addiction has become the biggest issue among professional sportspeople treated by the Sporting Chance clinic'. Their CEO Colin Bland went on to say that the relationship between sport and gambling has reached a “pivotal point”, labelling gambling addiction as a “serious public health issue”. The playwright of 'graveyard shift' talks about football, spoken-word poetry, and finding a home in the theatre.
In this fascinating episode, I invite Sporting Chance onto the podcast to tell me about their work in the rehabilitation of sports stars who are suffering from addiction. The charity was founded by England and Arsenal player, Tony Adams after his own battle with addiction, and it does excellent work helping athletes of all kinds in their recovery. We dissect the underlying reasons behind pro athletes becoming addicted to drugs, alcohol or gambling, as Alex and Colin shine a light on their rehab methods. I've loved every second of this month as we've uncovered your surprising, honest and inspirational stories around addiction. This episode delves into the victims of addiction that we may not consider. I found it hugely eye-opening and can't thank Colin and Alex enough for enlightening us. At rainy Pimlico, we are getting ready for a wet Preakness Stakes with Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas talking Kentucky Derby winner Justify and his two challengers – Bravazo and Sporting Chance.
