As two Americans, Katie and Miranda weren't able to watch a lot of the Asian swing, but that doesn't mean we won't talk about it! While we both wish Andrey Rublev would have taken home his second Masters 1000 title, we're happy to see Hubi Hurkacz do his weird close-lipped kiss of the trophy. Ben Shelton hangs up the phone in Aslan Karatsev and takes home his first ATP title and a 500-level one at that! In a moment of nightmare fuel, we think about how bed bugs could be an issue at Paris Bercy, where another (theoretical) Masters 1000 could go on the calendar, and the crazy matchups in round one of Vienna and Basel. And of course, since the release of 1989 (Taylor's Version) drops on Friday, we do what any good Swifties do. Assign tennis players to the songs on the album. Including blind placing players for the unheard vault songs! We'll give you three guesses as to who we put for Slut!  New to tennis or trying to get a friend into the sport? More guys, more cups. On this week's Open Era, Simon explains how he escaped from Vancouver before the Laver Cup started before we dig into the event sans ‘The Big 3' and a whole lot of gloss. Then, they check-in with the ATP and WTA, where Aslan Karatsev and Andy Murray reminded us of simpler times while Elena Rybakina rightly is pissed off once again and Wang Xiyu won at home. Friend of the pod Tumaini Carayol joins us in the studio for another fun episode. We share our Wimbledon accreditation news – yes, Black Spin Global will be at The Championships this year as media! Roland Garros men's "demi-finals" day was a lot of fun (courtesy of Rodney Rapson aka The Plug). Find out how we got on in Paris (and why Lucy calls it "The Ghetto") where Novak Djokovic made history after winning his 23rd Grand Slam. Tumaini also brilliantly articulates why Djokovic and Serena Williams should never be compared. On the women's side, Iga Swiatek secured her third Roland Garros title – second in a row. 22-year-old joins Naomi Osaka on four Grand Slams. Swiatek really did her thing again this year in an entertaining final against Karolina Muchova. Handshake-gate and fascinating behind-the-scenes insight regarding Aryna Sabalenka. Did the French crowd really understand what was really going on when the Ukrainian players refused to shake hands with Russian and Belarusians? Gael Monfils was talk of week one after his epic five-set victory over Sebastian Baez. La Monf suffered severe cramps and was 0-4 down in the fifth before coming back to take it. Was very emotional afterwards. Sadly withdrew the following day due to a wrist injury. Coco Gauff made a run to the quarter-finals where she fell to eventual champ Swiatek in straights. One of the better matches played against the Pole so far in their seven meetings. Also came through a nice three-set match with 16-year-old talent Mirra Andreeva in the third round. Also reached the women's doubles semi-final. Frances Tiafoe was rocking a custom Nike + IDK collaboration kit which paid homage to his Sierra Leone roots – super clean. (IDK's music goes hard too thoroughly recommend the F65 project) The 12th seed made a run to the third round where he fell to Alexander Zverev in four sets. Loved the win over Aslan Karatsev in R2. Sloane Stephens, who is "a good time in press", stunned in her FP Movement kit. That blue she was wearing in round two was an absolute scene. The 2018 runner-up made a run to the last 16 where she fell to Sabalenka in two tight sets in the one only women's “night session” match this year. We share our thoughts on the sexist scheduling. We had success in doubles where Clervie Ngounoue and Tyra Caterina Grant secured the girls' doubles title after beating the top seeds in the final. Taylor Townsend and Leylah Fernandez, looking pretty in pink, finished runners-up in the women's doubles event. The American-Canadian duo are a serious team. Also shout out Kgothatso Montjane and Yui Kamiji – women's wheelchair doubles champions. And Donald Ramphadi and Andy Lapthorne – Quad men's doubles champions. And to close, bi-lingual king Tumaini talks about his seven-week stint on the road including his trip to Murcia, to carry out a Spanish interview with the people who knew world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz before he became That Guy! David, Catherine (in Madrid) and Matt talk through how both players have got there, Swiatek's intensity and focus this week, and the way in which Sabalenka is embracing the prospect of a rematch with the world number one. On the men's side, we look ahead to the Carlos Alcaraz vs Borna Coric and Aslan Karatsev vs Jan-Lennard Struff semi-finals. Yes, you read that correctly, Karatsev and Struff have made it all the way to the last four. Ep.K409: Once Again, Tennis Is Disrupted by Politics   If he had it to do over, Brad Gilbert would never have played a professional tennis tournament in South Africa while the country was embroiled in apartheid. Martina Navratilova has never regretted challenging Czechoslovakia's Communist government by defecting to the United States in 1975, but she wishes she had been able to persuade her parents and younger sister to come with her. And Cliff Drysdale, the first president of the ATP, the men's pro players association, is still in awe of his fellow pros for agreeing to boycott Wimbledon in 1973 when Croatian player Nikola Pilic was suspended by his native Yugoslav Tennis Federation, which said he refused to play for Yugoslavia in the Davis Cup in New Zealand. Tennis and politics have long had a craggy relationship. This year alone, the sport has been embroiled in three international incidents: Novak Djokovic's deportation from Australia on the eve of the Australian Open because he did not have a COVID-19 vaccination, the Women's Tennis Association canceling all tournaments in China after accusations by Peng Shuai that she was sexually assaulted by a high-ranking government official, and Wimbledon banning Russian and Belarusian players because of the war in Ukraine. The WTA and the ATP subsequently stripped this year's Wimbledon of all ranking points. As this tournament begins, five male players ranked in the world's top 50, including No. 1 Daniil Medvedev and No. 8 Andrey Rublev, both Russians, will be absent because of the Wimbledon ban. Also banned are Russians Karen Khachanov, ranked No. 22, and Aslan Karatsev, No. 43; and Belarusian Ilya Ivashka, No. 40. For the women, 13 players who would have qualified are not allowed to play, including Russians Daria Kasatkina, ranked No. 13, No. 22 Veronika Kudermetova and No. 83 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, the 2021 French Open runner-up; and Belarusians Aryna Sabalenka, No. 6 and a semifinalist last year at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, and No. 20 Victoria Azarenka, a former world No. 1. The U.S. Tennis Association has already announced that players from Russia and Belarus will be allowed to compete at the U.S. Open in August, although not under their nations' flags. “Our sport is always going to be subjected to political forces,” said Drysdale, an ESPN commentator since the network's inception in 1979. “There's always something coming around the corner and rearing its head.” Source article: https://udn.com/news/story/6904/6447714

Enjoy our interview with Michael Mmoh - winner of the USTA's Roland-Garros wild card in 2022. Below is a snippet of our feature on Michael, for more info go to www.tennisnow.com! As a top junior, Michael Mmoh knows a thing or two about heavy expectations. He was the No.2-ranked junior in 2015, pushing for junior Slam titles and thought of as one of the most promising American players. He remains one of the more promising Americans, but one with unfinished business in 2022. Mmoh, the son of Toni Mmoh, who is a former World No.105 that played for Nigeria during his career, believes he is on the rise after several seasons of fits and starts due to injuries. He recently won the USTA's French Open wild card playoff and will take his place in the main draw at Roland-Garros for the second time next week. Having topped out in the ATP rankings at 96 in 2018, Mmoh currently ranks 179 – but, at the age of 24, he feels he has the capacity to go much higher. We asked him if players like Aslan Karatsev, who came from relative obscurity to become the lowest-ranked player to reach the Australian Open semifinals on his Grand Slam debut, inspire him to believe that he can rise up the ranks on tour. “[Players like that] show me that no matter how long you might be playing challengers or whatever that doesn't necessarily mean that you are a challenger player,” he said. “It just hasn't clicked yet in terms of you making that breakthrough, and I feel like if I'm able to consistently be healthy and just give myself opportunities week in and week out, I feel like my game belongs on the ATP Tour, so I think if I'm able to just keep working hard, keep staying healthy, I'll be surprised if I'm not there.” Despite struggling with injuries over the last few seasons, Mmoh has made big strides. He won his first Grand Slam main draw match at the Australian Open in 2020 and has since reached the second round at two other majors. The potential to do damage on the biggest stages is there – now it's just about getting everything in sync, mentally and physically. “I would always miss four months here, three months there, so now I feel like my body is finally at a place where I am able to play week in and week out and I'm liking how my game is forming because of that,” Mmoh says. “I'm able to get consistent reps of playing matches and I really think this year is going to be a good year for me because of that.” Mmoh spends a lot of time training in Bradenton, Florida, where he is a regular hitting partner of Sebastian Korda, Denis Shapovalov and other top pros. He says the experience can only help him. “It's a very competitive atmosphere, I'm able to hit with Sebi a lot, Shapo when he's here. Obviously my goal is to be playing with these guys week in and week out, and it's a good place to train because it feels like you are on the tour with them when you are training with them.” Read the full article at Tennisnow.com! Day one was unspectacular, but somewhat soothing. Afterwards, Catherine, David and Matt convened to figure out why it felt flat. How much of it was due to lingering fallout from all of the Novak Djokovic drama? And how much of it was the simple lack of compelling matches? Even so, there were plenty of interesting stories to discuss, including Coco Gauff's shock defeat to Qiang Wang, mixed fortunes for recent champions Madison Keys, Aslan Karatsev and Thanasi Kokkinakis, winning returns for Rafael Nadal and Naomi Osaka, a physical transformation from Carlos Alcaraz, a fourth straight defeat for Cameron Norrie, ruthless efficiency from Ash Barty, and narrow wins for Amanda Anisimova and Matteo Berrettini.FRIENDS OF THE TENNIS PODCAST There are three new podcasts about the Australian Open waiting for all Friends of The Tennis Podcast - The Li Na story, the extraordinary Thomas Johansson year, and My First Australian Open.
