And trust me, it's nothing like dating was when we were teenagers. Here are the critical takeaways that every parent and teen should understand:Dating Today is Completely Different75% of teens text their romantic partner DAILYSocial media has transformed dating into a minefield of "talking stages" and "situationships" Snapchat is now the primary dating platform (and it was literally designed for sexting)The Biggest Red Flags:Teens are experiencing unprecedented social isolationMany young men are avoiding in-person dating entirelyNude photo requests have become a disturbing "social status" issueMost Shocking Statistic: 45% of men ages 18-25 have NEVER asked someone out in person, while 70% of women want to be asked out more. The Good News: Elle has created an app called "Ask Elle" specifically to help teens get safe, vetted dating advice. It's not just for teens - parents can use it to understand modern dating terminology and dynamics.https://apps.apple.com/us/app/askelle-ai/id6471620444Her #1 Recommendation for Parents: Don't completely ban social media. This conversation went far beyond the classroom. We talked about Damon's transition from teaching to becoming a mental health advocate, a sought-after speaker, and even a championship-winning wrestling coach!  Talk about wearing many hats!Damon's work with teens and mental health is particularly close to my heart. He shared some powerful insights on how he helps young people navigate the challenges they face today, including the importance of:Shifting focus from outcomes to relationships and being present. This resonated so much with me, as it aligns with my own approach to counseling.Investing in relationship building with people outside of their usual social circles. This is something I think we could all benefit from! Learning conflict resolution skills and understanding that healthy coexistence doesn't require loving everyone. This is such a crucial skill for young people (and adults too!). Damon also shared how he applies these principles to coaching, which has led to remarkable success for his wrestling team. We also had a candid discussion about the pressures facing teens today, from the overwhelming demands of academics and extracurriculars to the constant presence of technology.I know you'll find Damon's story and his practical advice as inspiring and thought-provoking as I did. Play Episode Listen Later Nov 12, 2024 24:41

Send us a textI just recorded a fascinating episode about anxiety that I had to share with you. I've been diving into this incredible book called "Anxiety Rx" by Dr. Russell Kennedy, and it's completely shifted how I think about anxiety management. Here's what blew my mind: We've been approaching anxiety backward!Instead of trying to think our way out of anxiety, we need to start with our bodies first. You see, when we experience trauma (and yes, that includes things like rejection or feeling shame – stuff we've all been through), those emotions get stored in our body as "alarms." Sometimes these alarms go off and we don't even know why. What happens next? Our brain tries to "help" by creating what Dr. Kennedy hilariously calls "brain droppings" – all those worrying thoughts that are really just distractions from what we're feeling in our body. The solution? Feel, don't think. I know, I know – easier said than done! But there's this beautiful practice Dr. Kennedy suggests:Place your hand on your heart (or wherever you feel the anxiety)Take slow, deep breathsSimply say to yourself: "I am safe in this moment"It's about treating that anxious part of yourself like you would a scared child – with compassion and understanding, not judgment. In this episode, I break down:The ALARMS system (what creates anxiety in the first place)Why worry is just a distractionPractical tools to work with your body instead of your mindThe ABCDE method for anxiety managementWant to learn more? Listen to or Watch the full episode below. And if you're struggling with anxiety right now, remember – I offer free anxiety audits where we can talk about what's going on and create a plan just for you, even if we never work together formally.Your anxiety doesn't have to be a life sentence. There are tools, there is hope, and there is a community here ready to support you.P.S. If you found this helpful, please share it with someone who might need it. We're all in this together.

Send us a text Today, we're wrapping up the book Anxious Kids, Anxious Parents. If this is your first time with me, I recommend checking out the last eight solo episodes. Each one covers important strategies from the book for managing anxiety. But don't worry if you're new—today, we're pulling it all together into one cohesive plan. Here's what we'll be focusing on:Putting the puzzle pieces together: We've covered seven puzzle pieces over the past episodes. Today, it's all about combining them into an actionable plan for managing anxiety.Expect the worry: Your brain might tell you that making an anxiety plan is overwhelming. That's normal! Worry will show up—expect it, acknowledge it, and move forward anyway.Embrace discomfort: We're practicing moving forward even when we feel uncomfortable. This is a key part of managing anxiety, for both you and your child.Involve your child: If this is for your child, the plan is theirs to own. You can support them, but they have to do the work themselves. Here's how to create your plan:Review the puzzle pieces – Use index cards for each step. Write the name of the puzzle piece on one side and some reminders or strategies on the other.Discuss success stories – Talk about moments when you or your child successfully handled anxiety. What worked? How did the puzzle pieces help?Practice with a fictional scenario – Start with an imaginary worry to walk through the steps and get familiar with the process.Use past experiences – Once comfortable with the process, talk through a past anxiety issue that's now resolved.Tackle current anxiety – Finally, apply the plan to something happening right now. Send us a textYou know that thing on your to-do list that keeps getting pushed to tomorrow? Yeah, that one. We talked about why we do that and how it might be linked to anxiety. Here's the scoop:We all avoid stuff. It's not just you.Avoiding things feels good... for about five minutes. Then it usually makes us feel worse.Try this: Instead of "I have to do this," say "I choose to do this." It's a small change, but it can make a big difference.Doing uncomfortable things is how we grow. It's not fun, but it's worth it.Parents: It's tempting to shield our kids from discomfort, but learning to handle it is crucial for their future.Figure out what you really want, then be willing to do the not-so-fun stuff to get there.I'll be honest - I still struggle with this sometimes. Remember how I mentioned painting the house? Still haven't done it. But I'm working on it, just like you're working on your stuff. If you're finding it tough to put these ideas into practice, don't beat yourself up. This stuff is hard. If you want some support, remember I'm here. We could set up an anxiety audit call and tackle this together.I'm curious - what's one thing you've been avoiding? And how might you reframe it as a choice? Hit reply and let me know. I always love hearing from you. Find my podcastEmail me: ccoufal@cynthiacoufalcoaching.comText me: 785-380-2064More information

Her approach is all about recognizing that success looks different for everyone, and that's okay! Here are some highlights from our conversation:Joanna works as a sort of "matchmaker" for young adults, helping them find the right fit - whether that's outpatient treatment, residential programs, gap year experiences, or just figuring out next steps. We talked about my own non-traditional college experience (spoiler alert: I may have ghosted my roommate and left college without telling anyone... oops!).Joanna shared some great insights about the growing acceptance of gap years and alternative paths, especially since the pandemic. We discussed how parents can support their kids during this transition, even when things don't go according to plan.Joanna has a podcast called "Success is Subjective" where she interviews people about their non-linear paths to success. Send us a textI'm diving deep into the concept of embracing uncertainty and discomfort. It's a tough one, I know, but it's a crucial step towards personal growth and overcoming anxiety.I've talked about the importance of expecting worry and the power of talking to your anxiety like a person. This week, I focused on the idea that life is full of unknowns. It's okay to feel uncertain about the future. In fact, it's normal! The key is to be willing to step outside your comfort zone and take risks. It's okay to feel uncomfortable. It's okay to not know what's going to happen. The important thing is to keep moving forward.Remember, I'm not talking about taking dangerous risks. I'm talking about emotional risks. Things like trying new hobbies, asking someone out, or pursuing a new career path. These can be scary, but they're also incredibly rewarding.I've personally learned a lot from taking emotional risks. It's helped me grow as a person and achieve my goals. I believe it can do the same for you.So, what are you waiting for? Start small. Take a deep breath and step outside your comfort zone. You might be surprised at what you're capable of.Join my Free Parenting Anxious Teens Master Class on Sept. 9, 2024!https://cheerful-writer-462.ck.page/05ec8bc99d Find my podcastEmail me: ccoufal@cynthiacoufalcoaching.comText me: 785-380-2064More information

E 206 Overcoming Anxiety: Conversations with Your Worry

Send us a Text Message.Remember a couple weeks back when we talked about expecting worry? Well, this time we're taking it a step further. We're learning how to actually talk to our worries! I know, it sounds a bit odd at first, but stick with me here. The idea is to personify our anxiety - give it a character, a face, maybe even a silly voice. For me, it's Mrs. Crawley from Downton Abbey (if you know, you know!). By doing this, we can separate ourselves from our anxiety and have a conversation with it.I shared some examples of how to chat with your worry:Acknowledge it: "Hey there, Worry. I knew you'd show up for the first day of school."Be friendly: "Come along for the ride, but you'll see there's nothing to fear."Boss it around (in a playful way): "Knock it off! This isn't an emergency."The cool thing is, this technique works for all ages. I even had a 59-year-old client use it successfully! For parents, I emphasized the importance of modeling this behavior and then coaching our kids to do it themselves. It's all about helping them become independent anxiety-managers.Oh, and exciting news! I'm starting a parent book study group where we can dive deeper into these concepts together. If you're interested, sign up HERE!I'd love to hear how this technique works for you or your kids.
