Matt Crawford speaks with author Dean Van Nguyen about his book, Words for My Comrades: A Political History of Tupac Shakur. Before his murder at age twenty-five, Tupac Shakur rose to staggering artistic heights as the preeminent storyteller of the 1990s, building, in the process, one of the most iconic public personas of the last half century. He recorded no fewer than ten platinum albums, starred in major films, and became an activist and political hero known the world over. In this cultural history, journalist Van Nguyen reckons with Tupac's coming of age, fame, and cultural capital, and how the political machinations that shaped him as a boy have since buoyed his legacy as a revolutionary following the George Floyd uprisings. Words for My Comrades engages—crucially—with the influence of Tupac's mother, Afeni, whose role in the Black Panther Party and dedication to dismantling American imperialism and combating police brutality informed Tupac's art. Tupac's childhood as a son of the Panthers, coupled with the influence of his stepfather's Marxist beliefs, informed his own riveting code of ethics that helped audiences grapple with America's inherent injustices. Using oral histories from conversations with the people who directly witnessed Tupac's life and career, many of whom were interviewed for the first time here—from Panther elder Aaron Dixon, to music video director Stephen Ashley Blake, to friends and contemporaries of Tupac's mother—Van Nguyen demonstrates how Tupac became one of the most enduring musical legends in hip-hop history, and how intimately his name is threaded with the legacy of Black Panther politics. Van Nguyen reveals how Tupac and Afeni each championed the disenfranchised in distinct ways, and how their mother-son bond charts a narrative of the last fifty years of revolutionary Black American politics. Words for My Comrades is the story of how the energy of the Black political movement was subsumed by culture, and how America produced two of its most iconic, enduring revolutionaries.
How do you talk money without losing trust—or your audience? From quarterly earnings calls to investor pitches, the world of financial communication is a tightrope walk of clarity, persuasion, and credibility. What makes numbers sound good? When does transparent/positive become too transparent/positive? And why does jargon sometimes feel like the best financial armour? Tune in for a lively dive into the art (?) of financial storytelling—with three experts sharing plenty of insights, red flags, laughs, and a nudge to rethink your next fiscal update and/or investment, especially when your are being pandered to with pathos and patriotism. Long notes: In this episode we discuss financial communication and start with readability. A few selected studies are: Bonsall, S. B., & Miller, B. P. (2017). The impact of narrative disclosure readability on bond ratings and the cost of debt. Review of Accounting Studies, 22, 608-643. Huong Dau, N., Van Nguyen, D., & Thi Thanh Diem, H. (2024). Annual report readability and firms' investment decisions. Cogent Economics and Finance, 12(1). https://doi.org/10.1080/23322039.2023.2296230 Li, F. (2008). Annual report readability, current earnings, and earnings persistence. Journal of Accounting and Economics, 45 (2-3), 221-247. Both Bernard and Erika mention PhD work on financial communication. Bernard's student Nils Smeuninx completed his thesis in 2018; the title is “Dear Stakeholder. Exploring the language of sustainability reporting: A closer look at readability, sentiment and perception”. Erika refers to a PhD study on how small investors respond to plain English as opposed to more complex or less readable text: Rennekamp, K. (2012). The complexity of qualitative accounting disclosures: Managers' choices and investors. Cornell Theses and Dissertations. https://hdl.handle.net/1813/31452 For her part, Veronika co-supervised a student - Xiaoxi Wu, now at Bocconi University in Milan (Italy) - with the Accounting department at Lancaster University (UK), resulting in this article: Koller, V., & Wu, X. (2023). Analysts' identity negotiations and politeness behaviour in earnings calls of U.S. firms with extreme earnings changes. Corporate Communications, 28(5), 769-787. DOI: 10.1108/CCIJ-08-2022-0098 Erika mentions the Juno app, which is designed to explain technical financial language to lay investors. Bernard then refers to Veronika's first foray into financial communication and narrative accounting: Merkl-Davies, D. M., & Koller, V. (2012). “Metaphoring” people out of this world: A critical discourse analysis of a chairman's statement of a UK defence firm. Accounting Forum, 36(3), 178-193. An agentless passive, the sentence ‘mistakes were made' helps to avoid blaming anyone for making mistakes. It has become a catchphrase, often used humorously to hint at disaster, including in gifs and memes Back to financial communication: Referring to the gendered metaphors that it often features, Erika mentions this book chapter: Boggio, C., Fornero, E., Prast, H., & Sanders, J. (2017). Seven ways to knit your portfolio: Is investor communication neutral? In Garzone, G., Catenaccio, P., Grego, K., & Doerr, R. (2004), The impact of culture on the interpretation of in-context verbal probability expressions. Journal of International Accounting Research, 3(1), 1-20. In the first part of the episode, we also discuss tone as an important concept in financial communication. Intriguingly, media studies have shown that coverage in itself is good enough for the so-called “markets” (investors, analysts, fund managers) to have a positive attitude towards a company: Engelberg, J. E., & Parsons, C. A. (2011). The causal impact of media in financial markets. Journal of Finance, 66(1), 67-97. Finally, the 2019 annual report by Lockheed Martin, which includes the CEO statement that we analyse at the end of the episode. For more details make sure you visit our blog! This week, we revisit our 2022 conversation with Julian McMahon AC SC. Julian is a barrister at the Victorian Bar who came to international prominence representing Australians on death row. In the early 2000s, Julian defended Van Nguyen in Singapore and later Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, part of the infamous Bali 9, against drug charges that ultimately led to their deaths. He is highly regarded for having navigated long and complex trials in areas such as homicide, terrorism, corruption and fraud but despite all these accomplishments he insists luck has had a big part to play in his Life in the Law. www.greenslist.com.au/podcast

The history of South Vietnam (1954-1975) is in the midst of a major revision. Historians such as Van Nguyen-Marshall are rejecting old clichés of corruption and subservience to the United States of America as they craft a new narrative that puts everyday Vietnamese people at the center of the story. In Between War and the State: Civil Society in South Vietnam, 1954-1975 (Southeast Asia Program, 2023), she examines an array of voluntary activities, including mutual-help, professional, charitable, community development, student, women's, and rights organizations. Focusing on the public lives of South Vietnamese people, Between War and the State challenges persistent stereotypes of South Vietnam as a place without society or agency. Nguyen-Marshall shows how an active civil society survived despite difficulties imposed by the war, government restrictions, economic hardship, and external political forces. These competing political forces, which included the United States, Western aid agencies, and Vietnamese communist agents, created a highly competitive arena wherein the South Vietnamese state did not have a monopoly on persuasive or coercive power. To maintain its influence, the state sometimes needed to accommodate groups and limit its use of violence. Civil society participants in South Vietnam leveraged their social connections, made alliances, appealed to the domestic and international public, and used street protests to voice their concerns, secure their interests and carry out their activities. Van Nguyen-Marshall is an Associate Professor of History at Trent University where she specializes in modern Vietnamese History, focusing on associational life, civil society, and the Vietnam War. She has published a number of articles as well co-editing The Reinvention of Distinction: Modernity and the Middle Class in Urban Vietnam with Lisa Drummond and Daniele Belanger (2012) and her first book In Search of Moral Authority: The Discourse on Poverty, Poor Relief and Charity in French Colonial Vietnam (2008). Michael G. Vann is a professor of world history at California State University, Sacramento. Writer Miles Gunter, artist Briane Andan, colorist Lee Loughridge, and letterer Taylor Esposito have created “Grammaton Punch,” an action-packed comic book series about a boy who sees and fights ghosts, available only on Comixology. I've been loving this series and getting the chance to talk with Gunter about how it came to be was a blast. Gunter and look at the series origins, including the concept and working with Andan, Loughridge, and Esposito. He and I dive into the horror and video game influences, with a bit of anime thrown into the mix. We talk about main character Van Nguyen, who has the ability to see and touch ghosts, his struggles in the role of protector, and how he approaches being the hero in the series.
Today I'm welcoming Van Nguyen to talk about her journey of going from sales rep to business leader, plus diving deep on what she's learned along the way. Van recently stepped into a leadership role with Revision Skincare, one of the most innovative companies in the industry. Van has been enjoying the shift in experiences since joining the team at Revision. She loves knowing the goals of her reps and helping them grow both personally and professionally. Actually, she even loses sleep at night when she feels one of her team members might miss their numbers. Van emphasizes hiring on character because there are some qualities that can't be taught, like the desire to win and be successful. She can teach ingredients and technology, but the motivation to get out of bed has to come from the individual themselves. Partnership is more important in sales than ever before. The front desk person at a med spa sees eight to twelve reps a day, so it's important to not just stand out, but stand out in the right ways. The foundation of a good relationship is comprehension—it's not about what you say, but how the person you're speaking to comprehends it. Van's advice for being successful in the industry is to not just talk. Be all about what you're promising. Make it clear that you're the better partner by nurturing the relationship. Soft skills and clear communication on how you can make their life easier goes a long way.

In the aftermath of the Atlanta shootings of six Asian women, some AAPI Angelenos are fearing their parents’ safety. Michelle Gonzales tells KCRW she has forbidden her mother from taking walks in their predominantly Filipino neighborhood in Carson. “That was just our way of protecting her from violence that could actually happen in our community, when before we would never have thought that something like that would ever be possible,” Gonzales says. Others, like Van Nguyen, describe why they’re worried for their own safety. “I just want to run errands and go home. I don't need to be walking down the street in an area that's unfamiliar to me. I'm a small Asian woman. I'm super petite, 5’2.’’ Who knows what would happen?”

It may be triggering for some listeners - and healing for others.— A self proclaimed “Renaissance Woman,” Van Nguyen is the Co-Organizer and Community Director of the PNW Biohackers Collective. Van has a B.S. in Nursing from West Coast University and a background in Marketing and Public Relations for firms in Beverly Hills, CA. She enjoys connecting and coaching other young women, especially those who are facing obstacles—as she herself is no stranger to physical, mental or emotional challenges. Growing up in a Vietnamese family, there were expectations for Van to follow the traditional role of a Vietnamese woman. But when Van ventured beyond the limits of these expectations, she experienced betrayal and was even disowned by her family. In this episode, Van describes the heartache of these, and other, experiences—and what propelled her to push forward and move through the pain, into what she describes as her “Revival”. —To connect with Van— Instagram @vanrevival Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Biohackers Collective —To connect with Markie and other survivors— Join the Project Markie Facebook group Instagram @MarkieWilliams Facebook @MarkieWilliamsFitness LinkedIn —Subscribe & Review— Apple Podcasts Stitcher Castbox Spotify Production Credits: This show was lovingly produced by CMG. www.wearecmg.com Producer | Laura Kaye Chamberlain @laurakayecreations Executive Producer, Show Art | Mandy “The Bos” @mandythebos Music | "Dreamy Piano" by cleanmindsounds (Envato Elements) Subscribe now to get a new episode of Project Markie on "Markie Mondays." Go behind the scenes of a pangolin rescue with Thai Van Nguyen, founder and executive director of Save Vietnam's Wildlife, and Gillian Foster, the organization's Communications Advisor. Save Vietnam's Wildlife is the first Vietnamese NGO dedicated to saving pangolins. Pangolins are arguably the world's most trafficked mammal, with an estimated 100,000 captured each year. People hunt them for their meat and their scales, which are used in traditional Asian medicine. Vietnam has two of the eight pangolin species, Sunda and Chinese pangolins, both critically endangered. In just eight months (July 2015-February 2016), Save Vietnam's Wildlife rehabilitated and released 75 pangolins rescued from the trade.
