Walt Disney Imagineering invited me on a very special and exclusive tour of their headquarters at 1401 Flower Street in Glendale, California. This tour gave me the chance to chat with Imagineers, visit multiple Imagineering departments (model shop, sculpting, sound, animation, and R&D), attend demonstrations and presentations, and experiment with some innovative Imagineering technology. I got to power on a realistic Star Wars lightsaber, play with the lovable BDX droids from Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge (Disneyland and Walt Disney World), and touch and feel silicone samples from Pirates of the Caribbean Battle for the Sunken Treasure (Shanghai Disneyland), just to name a few exciting milestones. In addition, I had the opportunity to interview Imagineer Dave Crawford inside Walt Disney Imagineering. All of this will be shared in today's episode. Dave Crawford is a creative ride engineering executive at Walt Disney Imagineering, where he started in 1998 as a mechanical engineer. He has worked on the ride systems for The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, just to name a couple of familiar examples. Dave is also listed as an inventor on over 60 patents and has been involved in every aspect of attraction design and development from early Blue Sky to attraction installation, turnover and certification. WDW's new fantasyland was not planned to look like the one we have today. In this episode of Distory, we visit the dilapidated Fantasyland of the Magic Kingdom of the late 90s and early 2000s to watch how Imagineering's major overhaul of this land evolved over time. Along the way, we find some lost concepts of major areas that were scrapped, including a Cinderella attraction that is not *quite* like the one Kate wishes Disney would create. As we finally arrive at the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train concept, we dive into the construction process. Kate walks us through the evolution of the ride vehicles in development, including their fascinating hand-painting process. Kirk discusses the construction on a larger scale, walking us through the assembly of this E-ticket attraction. We also both share some of our other Disney projects and wax nostalgic about the first time we met each other IRL (in real life). A little over a decade ago, Magic Kingdom opened an addition to Fantasyland. It completely changed the dynamics of the most visited theme park in the world, so it is quite important to look back and see if it was worth it. Find Rick on social media... Hello Tourists! On this adventure of Disney Conversations, we take a look at the differences and similarities of Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom as compared to Walt's original park Disneyland! For this discussion, Magical Matthew is joined by Tour Guides Janette Pellegrini and Mindy Muir! If you are planning a trip to one of these parks, and you have never been, we hope you find this information useful. Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom and Disneyland Park in Anaheim are two of the most popular theme parks in the world. While they share some similarities, they also have some significant differences. Here are some key comparisons between the two: 1. Size and Layout: Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom is significantly larger than Disneyland Park in terms of overall size and number of attractions. The Magic Kingdom covers an area of 107 acres and has 47 rides and attractions. Disneyland Park, on the other hand, covers only 85 acres and has 40 attractions. The layout of the two parks is also different, with the Magic Kingdom arranged in a circular pattern around the iconic Cinderella Castle, while Disneyland Park is more linear in design, with its entrance on one end and Sleeping Beauty Castle on the other. 2. Unique Attractions: While both parks share some attractions, such as Pirates of the Caribbean and It's a Small World, there are also many unique attractions to each park. Magic Kingdom has several attractions not found at Disneyland, including the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train roller coaster, the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover, and the classic Carousel of Progress. Meanwhile, Disneyland Park has its own exclusive attractions, such as the Indiana Jones Adventure, the Matterhorn Bobsleds, and the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage. 3. Dining Options: Both parks offer a variety of dining options, ranging from quick-service snack stands to sit-down restaurants. However, Disneyland Park has a slightly larger variety of dining options, with unique restaurants such as the Blue Bayou, located inside the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, and the Cafe Orleans, which serves New Orleans-inspired cuisine. 4. Atmosphere: The overall atmosphere of each park is also different. Magic Kingdom has a more grand, regal feel with its ornate castle and spacious Main Street, USA. Disneyland Park, on the other hand, has a more whimsical and nostalgic feel, with attractions like the original It's a Small World and classic characters such as Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/matthew-wallace9/message

Rob't Coltrin became a Disney Legend in 2020 (inducted at the D23 Expo 2022 ceremony) after spending 30 years at Walt Disney Imagineering. As a show set designer, concept artist, art director, and creative executive, Rob't became a go-to artist at Walt Disney Imagineering for concept work, storytelling, and ride layouts. Rob't is famous for helping design such noteworthy attractions as Expedition Everest, Toy Story Mania, Radiator Springs Racers, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Enchanted Tales of Beauty and the Beast, Mystic Manor, Mickey's Philharmagic, Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway, and the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (to name just a few). His likeness can also be found as a Disney S.E.A. character (Prof. R. Blauerhimmel, which fittingly translates to "Blue Sky"). In this podcast episode, I chat with Rob't about his career at Walt Disney Imagineering, including some of the attractions he helped bring to life. We also "geek out" together about ride layout design and blue sky development. What is your favorite Rob't Coltrin land or attraction? In today's episode, we will be discussing Seven Dwarfs Mine Train at Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World. Ever since it opened in 2014, the attraction has consistently pulled in large crowds, and has become an instant classic among Disney fans. Though the coaster is relatively tame, it debuted several new technologies and features that make it completely unique from any other coaster in the country. To this day, Space Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain may bring more thrills, but the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is able to provide a fun experience for adults while introducing younger riders to the world of rollercoasters.
