How Our Economic Religion is Dragging Civilization Towards Overshoot and Collapse

Produced by KSQD 90.7, 89.7 & 89.5FM “Be Bold America!” Sunday, July 14, 2024 at 5:00pm (PT) America has fatal flaws in its economic paradigm. Neoclassical Economics has ruled the United States for most of the past century. Valid economics cannot be separated from values, and what it means to be human. Any notion of “Utility” must honor and encourage the best within us.  At this, Neoclassical Economics is an abject failure.  Neoclassical Economics legitimizes the short-term pillage of Earth, and discounts away the value of future civilization, indeed for all future life on our planet. Dr. Richard Nolthenius will dissect its worst flaws, with special emphasis on how it trivializes climate damage to our present and future, and how its proponents have allied themselves to be servants not to humanity, but to their paymasters in corporate America and in the halls of political power. Interview Guest: Dr. Richard Nolthenius is a member of the “Earth Futures Institute”, with a specialty in economics, at UC Santa Cruz. Dr. Nolthenius is the Astronomy Program Chair at Cabrillo College in Santa Cruz, CA. In the past 10 years, Richard added climate science to his expertise, teaching a comprehensive course in Climate Science and its civilization context.   By examining the climate science problem and searching for solutions, he has found its connected fundamentally to, well, everything. In addition, Richard is a contributing chapter author in Climate Abandoned: We're on the Endangered Species List, a #1 Amazon bestseller.

In this episode, we will dive into conversation with Anthony Romero, offensive Coordinator at Cabrillo College. This episode is brought to you by LMNT! Spelled LMNT. What is LMNT? It's a delicious, sugar-free electrolyte drink-mix. I tried this recently after hearing about it on another podcast, and since then, I've stocked up on boxes and boxes of this and usually use it 1–2 times per day. LMNT is a great alternative to other commercial recovery and performance drinks. As a coach or an athlete, you will not find a better product that focuses on the essential electrolyte your body needs during competition. LMNT has become a staple in my own training and something we are excited to offer to our coaches and student-athletes as well. LMNT is used by Military Special Forces teams, Team USA weightlifting, At least 5 NFL teams, and more than half the NBA. You can try it risk-free. If you don't like it, LMNT will give you your money back no questions asked. They have extremely low return rates. LMNT came up with a very special offer for you as a listener to this podcast. For a limited time, you can claim a free LMNT Sample Pack—you only cover the cost of shipping. For US customers, this means you can receive an 8-count sample pack for only $5. Simply go to DrinkLMNT.com/contacts to claim your free 8-count sample pack. Produced by KSQD 90.7, 89.5 & 89.7FM “Be Bold America!” Sunday, December 3, 2023 at 5:00pm (PT) Noam Chomsky states: “Dying for Capitalism is carefully reasoned and informed, spelling out what we can and must do, without delay.” We are dying—literally—from capitalism, and if our species is to survive we need a new abolitionist movement whose goal is to overturn capitalism and replace it with policies and politics that are designed to meet the needs of the many, instead of the bottom lines of the few. A triangle of extinction … capitalism, environmental destruction, and war, are creating an emergency that humanity-as-a-whole has never faced before. Interview guest, Dr. Charles Derber, will tell us how runaway capitalism has brought us to the brink of extinction, trace the history of how the U.S. became the leading capitalist power, and chart a way to a more hopeful future. Interview Guest:  Dr. Charles Derber is Professor of Sociology at Boston College and has written 26 books- on politics, democracy, fascism, corporations, capitalism, climate change, war, the culture wars, culture and conversation, and social change.  He writes for and has been reviewed in the NY Times, the Washington Post, the Boston Globe, Truthout, and other leading media. His books are translated into 14 languages and his most recent books include Dying for Capitalism, Welcome to the Revolution, Moving Beyond Fear, Sociopathic Society: A People's Sociology of the United States; Capitalism: Should You Buy It? Guest Cohost: Richard Nolthenius, Ph.D. is a member of the Earth Futures Institute with specialty in economics, at UC Santa Cruz, and is also Chair of the Astronomy Department at Cabrillo College in Santa Cruz, CA. Since 2009 Richard has shifted his focused to climate science and the human poly-crisis, and teaches a comprehensive course on climate change and its civilization context. By following the crisis' threads, he finds no solution is possible which neglects the deep causes for human behavior, in virtually all areas. It's not just a techno problem.

His initial interest towards martial arts sparked after seeing Royce Gracie at UFC 1 and UFC 2. While Bobby was looking for a sport to stay fit, his friend invited him to a jiu-jitsu class in a nearby gym. Instantly hooked to the discipline, Bobby soon joined Cesar Gracie Jiu-Jitsu academy before moving on to Gracie Systems which was formed after Cesar's cousin Ralph Gracie moved stateside. Subsequently, Ralph opened his own academy in Mountain View, California where Bobby continued teaching and training jiu-jitsu. Bobby grew interested to take a no holds barred bout which was disapproved by Ralph, leading to Bobby's departure from the academy. Subsequently Bobby joined American Kickboxing Academy which at the time had no proper Brazilian jiu-jitsu program, so he took the responsibility of teaching the discipline. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/toddatkinsshow/message

Episode #47: To honor Mental Health Awareness Month, we turn our attention to bipolar disorder, a serious mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings. If not treated and managed, bipolar disorder can be dangerous and cause great disruption in a person's life. Most mental health disorders have peak onset during young adulthood. So, while beginning college and meeting the new stressors that accompany this transition, many young adults will experience the first onset of problems or an exacerbation of pre-existing symptoms. Students diagnosed with bipolar disorder are 70% more likely to drop out of college than students with no psychiatric diagnosis. Many of these students are going undiagnosed and are not getting the treatment and the support services they need to succeed in college. However, students with bipolar disorder can implement effective treatments, practice management strategies, and seek support in order make progress in their college education. For this conversation, we're joined by Allyson Makuch, who recently navigated bipolar disorder throughout her college and graduate school years. We're also joined by a University of California, Santa Cruz Director of Psychiatry, Dr. David Lo, to inform us about bipolar disorder and ways to manage it while in college. Traumatic Brain Injuries and Mental Health

Episode #46: An inside look at traumatic brain injury, or “TBI,” and how these injuries influence mental health. People of all ages get them in a variety of ways—from sports injuries, to car accidents, to domestic falls and many of these individuals develop mental health symptoms that can last for months or even years. This show was recorded in Santa Cruz, California, one of the surfing capitals of the country and while mild traumatic brain injuries such as concussions are common in many sports, head injuries are the most common injury among surfers, comprising one-fourth of the total. Children and youths are particularly susceptible and those who sustain even a mild brain injury (often referred to as a concussion), have a 40% increased risk of developing mental health symptoms. Because these issues can appear many months after the injury, doctors and care providers need to pay particular attention to the mental state of patients long after a traumatic brain injury of any severity. Our guest and author JoAnne Jones talks about her recovery from a severe traumatic brain injury that occurred when she was assaulted and robbed. Also with us is rehabilitation and physical medicine specialist Dr. Jennifer Yu who shares information about the mental health symptoms, treatment approaches, and recovery strategies associated with mild to severe traumatic brain injuries. In this second interview with Dr. Josh Donaldson, we explore PRP or platelet-rich plasma and what it could do for your osteoarthritic knees, jumper's knees, meniscus tears, rotator cuff injuries, hypermobile shoulders, painful lower backs, plantar fasciitis, and even wrinkle lines. This is a natural treatment that harvests the power of components in your own blood to aid in regenerating cartilage, stopping tendon pain, and getting professional athletes back in the game. My dentist even uses PRP in his practice to help with bone regrowth after severe tooth abscesses. During the video, we show the process of drawing the blood, putting it in a centrifuge, extracting the PRP, and injecting it into my own knee. In the past, I had a very hypermobile shoulder that would pop, click and hurt. After a number of PRP injections, I am doing push-ups and live pain-free. It was a painful process but well worth the time, money, and pain. Dr. Josh Donaldson began his educational career at the University of Oregon where he obtained a B.S. in Sports Medicine and Biology. He then worked in the field of Physical Therapy and Fitness Training for several years before obtaining his doctorate (N.D.) from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, OR. Following medical school, Dr. Donaldson completed a post-doctoral clinical research fellowship where he investigated the nutritional implications of various diseases such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and digestive disorders. Now in private practice, Dr. Donaldson incorporates a holistic approach to each of his patients by addressing the whole person and every aspect of their health. He practices general family medicine but has specific interests in chronic pain disorders, sports medicine, mental/emotional disorders, healthy aging, diabetes/obesity, heart disease, and gastrointestinal conditions. His ultimate goal is to find the underlying cause of pain & dysfunction in the body for these and other areas of medicine and then develop personalized treatment strategies accordingly. Attention is centered on reversing & preventing further dysfunction through patient education, the implementation of various therapeutic modalities, and appropriate dietary & lifestyle modifications to help guide his patients towards optimal and lasting wellness. In addition, Dr. Donaldson has a passion for education and has been an Adjunct Professor at Cabrillo College and the Five Branches Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Santa Cruz, California since 2006. He also gives community lectures on various health topics, offers Corporate Wellness Programs throughout the West Coast, and leads Detox & Cleansing Retreats in Mexico & Hawaii. ABOUT THE AUTHOR The daughter of a law professor and a potter, Leslie Karst learned early, during family dinner conversations, the value of both careful analysis and the arts—ideal ingredients for a mystery story. She spent her early years in various locales from Columbus, Ohio to South America and England. Leslie was able to parlay her humanities degree into employment waiting tables and singing in a new wave rock and roll band. Exciting though this life was, however, she eventually decided she was ready for a “real” job, and ended up at Stanford Law School. Leslie worked for twenty years as a research and appellate attorney for a civil law firm. She rediscovered a passion for food and cooking and returned to school for a degree in culinary arts from Cabrillo College. ABOUT THE BOOK - THE FRAGRANCE OF DEATH Restaurateur Sally Solari is a champion, both in the kitchen and on the case, but after getting mixed up in one too many murders, she's noticed her Nonna's friends have now taken to crossing themselves when they see her in the street. Adding to her woes, a sinus infection has knocked out her sense of smell, making cooking on the hot line difficult, indeed. Nevertheless, Sally is determined to stay out of trouble and focus on her work. But then her old acquaintance Neil Lerici is murdered at the annual Santa Cruz Artichoke Cook-Off, and her powers of investigation are called into action once more. Could Neil have been killed by the local restaurant owner who took his winning spot at the competition? Or maybe by one of his siblings, who were desperate to sell the family farm to a real estate developer?

What would the world be like without shame? Today's guest Santa Cruz sculptor Maren Sinclair Hurn describes a dream in which she sees that her daughter has nails piercing her eyelids. This dream inspired her to create faces that helped her come to terms with her own shame of sexuality. You can find pictures of her sculpted faces below and on the episode page. You can also visit Maren's studio at the Tannery on First Friday art nights. Maren begins by talking about some early dreams including one in which an old woman tells, "You should go to art school!" She has been an sculptor artist every since with art degrees from Cabrillo College, UC Davis and Montana State Univ. We talk about Carlos Santana and his suicidal shame around sexual molestation and about the difference between guilt and shame. We take a phone call from Jan from Santa Cruz who shares what she calls "a relieving dream" about calling to a black dog, "Katrina, Katrina, Katrina!" and the dog running joyfully towards her. BIO: Maren Sinclair Hurn. We came close to losing musician Carlos Santana to suicide because of his unresolved shame around being molested as a child. With witness, he became whole again and shared his story with the world. Understanding her own shame began a few years ago when Maren dreamed of a 5-year-old girl eagerly flashing her eyelids. Each lid had been pierced with a nail. This dream was a disturbing image that she could not ignore and helped her get in touch with shame around her own sexuality. Maren will soon be sharing her sculptures in middle schools where she hopes they will inspire frank discussions around shame. marensinclairhurn.com We play clips from the following two guest-selected songs: Mamuse, Strange and Wonderful and Santana, Oye Como Va. I, often, refer patients to Dr Donaldson for the treatment of nasal related issues, fatigue and even chronic diseases that can be helped with ozone therapy. Nasal ozone insufflation can help mucosal linings to relieve nasal blockage from chronic nasal inflammation, nasal mold infections, chronic rhinitis and other problems. This pairs well with the Endonasal Cranial Adjusting that I do to move the skull bones and help with nasal blockage, snoring, sleep apnea, sinus issues and many other maladies. Dr Donaldson explains ear ozone insufflation, also, and it's great sytemic and local benefits like eustachian tube dysfunction and ear infections. Intravenous ozone therapy is a treatment that I have done on my own body and am excited to share this with people who seek more energy, help with chronic infections and many other challenges.   Dr. Josh Donaldson began his educational career at the University of Oregon where he obtained a B.S. in Sports Medicine and Biology. Produced by KSQD 90.7FM “The Decarbonization Imperative” KSQD 90.7FM “Be Bold America!” Sunday, October 10, 2021 at 5:00pm “Climate change is a challenge of our lifetimes. If we fail to act, and act soon, we risk leaving our children a world in which humanity's ability to flourish will be severely tested." – Michael Lenox & Rebecca Duff Time is of the essence. Climate change looms as a malignant force that will reshape our economy and society for generations to come. If we're going to avoid the worst effects of climate change, we're going to need to effectively “decarbonize” the global economy by 2050! This doesn't mean a modest, or even a drastic, improvement in fuel-efficient standards for automobiles. It means 100% of the cars on the road being powered by non-carbon emitting powertrains. It means 100% of our global electricity needs being met by renewables and other non-carbon-admitting sources such as nuclear power. It means electrifying the global industry sector and replacing carbon intensive chemical processes with green alternatives. With regards to existent business practices and products, how much and what kind of transformation can be achieved? Michael Lenox asserts that markets are critical to achieving the needed change. He and his co-author, Rebecca Duff, conclude with an analysis of policy interventions and strategies that could move us toward clean tech and decarbonization by 2050. Hear author Michael Lenox detail these policy interventions and strategies on “Be Bold America!” Interview Guest: Michael Lenox is the Tayloe Murphy Professor of Business Administration and Senior Associate Dean and Chief Strategy Officer at the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business and co-author of The Decarbonization Imperative and Can Business Save the Earth? His work has been cited by the New York Times, the Financial Times, and the Economist. He has been recognized as a Faculty Pioneer by the Aspen Institute, as the top strategy professor under 40 by the Strategic Management Society, and one of the top 40 business professors under 40 by Poets & Quants. Guest Cohost: Dr. Richard Nolthenius is Astronomy Program Chair at Cabrillo College in Santa Cruz, CA. Dr. Nolthenius began his career in Mathematics, moved to Aerospace Thermodynamics in private industry, then to Applied Physics at Stanford University, and then to his boyhood love of Astronomy at UCLA, and beyond. In the past 10 years, he's added climate science to his expertise, teaching a comprehensive course – Astro 7 - in Climate Science and its civilization context. But examining the climate science problem and searching for solutions, he has found it connected fundamentally to everything – from physics and evolutionary biology, to psychology, to economics and politics, to the thermodynamics of complex dynamical systems, and even the “strange attractors” of Chaos Theory. Solutions are not going to come from techno-wizardry, nor from politicians on the horizon today, nor from anyone mired in our current paradigms. He is a multiple chapter author in the award-winning anthology, “Climate Abandoned: We're on the Endangered Species List.”

"Be Bold America!"

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 27, 2020 55:34

Produced at KSQD 90.7FM Mainstream news media outlets have been slow to recognize and report on the climate and other ecological systems collapse. Is it out of ignorance, arrogance or both? In the vacuum, disinformation campaigns have filled the void, “fueled” by right wing media and oil industry money. More than 90% of radio hosts are conservative. This is a big part of the denialism in our country. Has the news media abandoned the climate and other environmental threats while doing the opposite with the coronavirus? The common denominators in both crises are: 1) Deadly global threat, no one is exempt, 2) Information and action can thwart or slow spread, 3) Personal actions have a public impact, 4) Requires national and international cooperation to reduce threat, 5) Requires some individual and societal sacrifice but benefit outweighs risk (suffering and death). What corporate news organizations choose to focus on determines what the public is focused upon and this narrow-vision contributes to ignorance, avoidance, and lack of response. This failure has been key in the lack of national response thus worsening the climate crisis during critical years. Media managers don't see it as their duty to provide solutions. So, whose responsibility IS it? What could possibly go wrong? Interview Guests: Betsy Rosenberg's broadcast career in television began working for ABC Sports for the Olympics and then working, for two decades, in radio as a reporter and anchor with CBS News. Later, she created, hosted, and produced “EcoTalk” heard on the Air America radio network attracting an audience of 50,000 and becoming the first daily green show in broadcast history. During its ten-year run, Betsy interviewed hundreds of eco-leaders in science, politics, culture, business, tech, arts and activism - from Al Gore and Bernie Sanders to Drs. Jim Hansen and Katherine Hayhoe to CEO's from all the pioneering green companies. Betsy blazed a trail in the field of environmental and climate journalism. In our attempt to reattain a harmonious balance with the life systems of the planet, certain traditions of knowledge and wisdom come to the forefront, namely Indigenous or Traditional Ecological Knowledge. But what is attached to these traditional forms of knowledge is something that is often overlooked, whether on purpose or not: the hundreds of years of genocide that nearly erased Indigenous peoples from Turtle Island. This erasure is just as much physical and is it cultural and spiritual. For those that carry the values and perspectives of the dominant culture, to respectfully and humbly embrace traditional Indigenous knowledge, wisdom, and perspectives requires taking a hard look at the what has brought us collectively to this moment. Produced at KSQD 90.7FM For all of human evolution, we've been rewarded by Nature for maximizing our growth. That reward - the very brain chemistry that has programmed us - is now propelling us towards calamity. Climate change, political fascism, pandemics, exponential increases in denialism, fake news and lies of all kinds…. Are these symptoms of an evolutionary mistake? As we hit the finite limits of the only living planet in the known universe, and the only one which can ever hope to sustain humanity – what are the unacknowledged constrictions which bind our choices and which frustrate our attempts to use old habits born of evolutionary adaptations, to deal with a fundamentally new world? In this show, we will explore what are the limits to our choices imposed by physical reality, by biological reality and how these impacts the individual and the emergent civilization he or she has made. We'll then explore how the future might evolve… and how it most likely will, evolve. Interview Guest: Dr. Richard Nolthenius is Astronomy Program Chair at Cabrillo College in Santa Cruz, CA. Dr. Nolthenius began his career in Mathematics, moved to Aerospace Thermodynamics in private industry, then to Applied Physics at Stanford University, and then to his boyhood love of Astronomy at UCLA, and beyond. http://traffic.libsyn.com/radiohealthjournal/RHJ_19-22B.mp3 More than 80% of infants are breastfed in the US today, but breastfeeding often doesn’t look the way most of us think of it, as a result of adoption, same sex marriage, and other changes in parenting. An expert discusses some of the hurdles and challenges to getting infants the best nutrition possible. Dr. Kristin Wilson, Chair of the Anthropology Department at Cabrillo College and author of Others’ Milk: The Potential of Exceptional Breastfeeding, says there’s not one “right” way to breastfeed. Even if some practices fall outside societal norms, Dr. Wilson stresses it’s okay to get creative when deciding how to care for and feed your child. What Dr. Wilson refers to as “exceptional” breastfeeders are the ones that set aside the Madonna-and-baby idea of breastfeeding, and take inventory of all options available based on their specific circumstances. Scientific evidence shows that breastfeeding is ideal for newborns and infants, both nutritionally and psychologically. Wilson, therefore, argues the practice should be considered by all parents, regardless of practical or societal hurdles––whether that means sharing milk, pumping, or inducing lactation. “Others’ Milk” in the book’s title refers to making breastmilk accessible to mothers who can’t produce it themselves, but it also pokes fun at the seemingly endless opinions parents encounter when deciding what’s best for their child. Wilson makes clear that breastfeeding is, of course, not feasible in all situations but should not be dismissed due to the judgments of others. Dr. Richard Nolthenius has a background in thermal engineering and astronomy. He currently runs the Astronomy Program at Cabrillo College, Santa Cruz California. He also lecturers and has been a visiting researcher for UC Santa Cruz since 1987. He describes his professional transition in to climate science as “quite a shock, not necessarily a pleasant one”! Dr. Nolthenius suggests that Professor Tim Garrett’s work on linking global wealth and energy consumption has not been given the attention it deserves, Dr. Nolthenius also concludes that the only way to advert the increasingly critical climate change situation is in line with Prof. Garretts publications and therefore requires sharp, rapid cuts to our use of fossil fuels. To achieve this end Dr. Nolthenius has compiled a list of 7 Policy Mechanisms which he will discuss in Part one. These include: Tax and Dividend End government subsidies to fossil fuel companies Trade sanctions against all countries who do not enact Tax and Dividend or end fossil fuel subsidies. Devise an efficient mechanism to impose Tax/Dividend on all externalized costs. Tax consumption, not income. End Child Tax Credit, and promote policies which economically discourage population growth. Amend the Constitution. Dr. Nolthenius explains exactly what the above may involve, and discusses ideas for getting them implemented with a million person Occupy DC movement. In Part Two Dr. Nolthenius highlights potential technological ‘band aids’ (and their short falls) which could potentially be implemented alongside the Policy Mechanisms discussed in Part 1. These include: Energy technologies (PV, Wind, Hydroelectric, Geothermal and Nuclear). Carbon Capture and storage Artificial capture of CO2 from the atmosphere via ‘Air Capture’ Climeworks commercially operated Air Capture CO2 machine. BECCS – BioEnergy with Carbon Capture and Sequestration. Dr. Nolthenius also points out how even if we ended all our carbon emissions today, the effect of Thermal Inertia would still cause global temperatures to rise. Part 3 covers GeoEngineering including: Permafrost Carbon How do we choose? Solar Radiation Management ‘Butterflies’ Asteroids with dust secretion Reflective Aerosols Refreezing the Artic using pumped sea water. ‘Loan Shark’ methods that won’t work long term Why there is no ‘Magic Bullet’ Finally, in Part 3 Dr. Nolthenius takes some time to explain how economics is related to climate change, and why we need to stop our obsession with Growth.  The work of Prof. Tim Garrett / “The Garrett Relation” is expanded upon and discussed. Reference is made by Dr Noltheius to "E.C.S", although not covered in the series this stands for Equilibrium Climate Sensitivity. More information on this is available in Dr Noltheniuss presentation 'Earth Climate Change in One (very long) Lecture' available here: https://www.cabrillo.edu/~rnolthenius/Apowers/ClimateInOne.pptx  Many thanks to Dr Richard Nolthenius for joining me for this 3-part series, I hope I can discuss more issues with him in the future. Voices from 2020, Vol. 8, Published June 30, 2007. In this eighth episode of Voices from 2020, hosts Firehawk and Bill Veltrop interview Diego Navarro, Founder and Director of the Digital Bridge Academy at Cabrillo College in Watsonville, California. The Digital Bridge Academy is a highly innovative program designed explicitly to help accelerate the readiness of students who are “under-prepared” for college in any number of ways (including “at-risk” students, who make up sometimes over 90% of the student population), and the Academy does this – not in years, but in only one semester. In this episode, learn about how the Academy “Lights the Fire for Learning” in these students, and how it has transformed the whole concept of education – and the lives of many – by the year 2020.
