“You have to get the process in place before you think about automating it, and also give people a non- judgmental and collaborative space to see the truth for themselves.” Slater Victoroff Unstructured data accounts for the largest part of the total data that businesses see and deal with on a daily basis.  This therefore means that businesses must find ways and tools to process this data efficiently and with the least cost, and also reap some business advantages. This is according to Slater Victoroff, who also insists on the importance of having working processes in the organization. Slater Victoroff is the Founder and CTO of Indico, an enterprise AI solution for unstructured content that emphasizes document understanding. Slater has been building machine learning solutions for startups, governments, and Fortune 100 companies for the past seven years and is a frequent speaker at AI conferences. Indico's framework requires 1000x less data than traditional machine learning techniques, and they regularly beat the likes of AWS, Google, Microsoft, and IBM in head-to-head bake-offs. Indico recently announced a $22 million Series B raise.  Slater has educated hundreds of business users on successfully implementing deep learning through a simple framework that helps executives rapidly accelerate the adoption of technology in their businesses. Slater attended Olin College of Engineering before pursuing Indico full-time after its acceptance into the Techstars Boston Program. In today's episode, Slater talks about the importance of simplifying processes and how his company is helping businesses do that, specifically with regards to processing unstructured data. Listen in! Media Handles: https://indicodata.ai/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/slatervictoroff/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/indico-data-solutions/ https://twitter.com/sl8rv        I describe Indico today as the bionic arm for the modern knowledge worker, and we focus on unstructured content. Bionic arms are not cyborgs, and at Indico, we champion this idea of the bionic arm because every action is in the person's control. From a business perspective, you get to have one consistent way of performing processes that is represented in code. Commercial break A huge part of our philosophy is having to meet people where they're at and at least helping then work in that world. Making enterprise technology usable, and understanding how it actually plugs into the broader ecosystem can be really challenging, yet often that is where the value is. One of the core reasons as to why it's got to be a bionic arm, is because we have to position the technology in a way that it empowers the subject matter expert. You have to get the process in place before you think about automating it, and also give people a non- judgmental and collaborative space to see the truth for themselves. The biggest thing that I have learned leading Indico over the years, and even more specifically with the kind of work that we do, is the power of process. The process is so often the key to taking things up to the next level, so walk into it with open eyes and recognize that it is a real challenge in its own right and not one to be taken lightly. ………………………………………………… Do you want to be a go to expert that news reporters, anchors and media producers turn to? In this episode of the Thoughtful Entrepreneur, your host Josh Elledge speaks to the founder and CTO of https://indicodata.ai/ (Indico Data), Slater Victoroff. Indico Data is an AI powered bionic arm for the modern knowledge worker. They offer a modern application that pairs with your business to generate AI solutions to maximize efficiency. But what is ‘unstructured data'? Slater explains that unstructured data is data that doesn't fit well into pre-structured “columns” of interconnected data. This is data that's miscellaneous, such as strings of text or media. AI, roughly, is anything humans do today that machines will do tomorrow. The definition of artificial intelligence has fluctuated since its conception. But how does unstructured data fit in? Slater shares that deep learning is very useful for a specific set of tools that relies on unstructured data. AI is not autonomous. It's essentially a bionic arm for the digital worker, as Slater puts it. AI is an assistant in your day to day work.  According to their website, Indico Data is purpose-built for unstructured data. It combines robust data analytics, advanced artificial intelligence and ML technologies, deep learning capabilities and highly efficient process automation, enabling enterprises to maximize opportunity, reduce risk, and accelerate revenue. Slater explains the misconceptions he had about AI when he was a college student. He believed deep learning was dead – but this was due to the industry climate at that time. Very few organizations did research on deep learning back in 2012. Deep learning is an amazing technology in a constrained environment. It took a lot of time and hard work, but this is how Indico Data was born.  Josh and Slater explore how Indico didn't hire a CEO initially. At some point, this team of engineers needed to choose someone among them to be the CEO. Slater was the CEO for some time, but he considered leaving the role. Once his team caught wind, he ultimately went back on his intuition and stayed in the role. While the company stayed afloat and was doing alright during Slater's time as CEO, it couldn't scale and grow. Ultimately, he pushed his team to allow him to step aside so they could seek another CEO. This meant that Slater and the team were on the same side of the table to find a new executive. He was put in the wrong role, plain and simple. When they found the right roles for both Slater and the new CEO of Indico Data, it was able to thrive and flourish.  Want to learn more? I'm always amazed when I talk to an entrepreneur who starts a company while in college. There's a lot going on during those college years in terms of the academic and social experience, so it's impressive when they have the vision and maturity to embark on the adventure of building a business. I find it even more impressive when the entrepreneur's company is working on hard tech and has legs beyond college, as in the case with Indico Data. Since it was founded while Slater was at Olin College of Engineering, the company has gone on to raise multiple rounds of venture funding and their tech has evolved to being an enterprise solution for helping empower organizations' use of unstructured data. In this episode of our podcast, we cover: * How training in MMA (mixed martial arts) helped him with his career in entrepreneurship. * Slater's decision to attend Olin and how it influenced his career to become an entrepreneur. * A deep dive into Indico Data, including how the idea came to fruition and the process of building the tech and getting the company started. * The current stage of the company and growth plans ahead. * Slater's role as an EIR at .406 Ventures and his experience as an angel investor. * When it makes sense to hire an outside CEO for your startup. * And so much more. Introduction Welcome to Distilling Venture Capital.  I am your host, Bill Griesinger, Distilling VC is a visionary podcast that provides an insightful and informed view of the key trends affecting the VC and tech startup world.  This is your podcast for Fintech, Decentralized Finance, Blockchain and Smart Contracts, Digital Banking and all the frontier technologies that are changing the financial landscape globally.     We will start here - Episode Introduction: Welcome back everyone.  I am really amped and excited about today´s conversation because I have the pleasure of welcoming to the program Slater Victoroff, Founder and CTO of Indico. Indico is the leading machine learning, and AI platform that has developed technology to unlock the value of unstructured data, about 85% of all data, providing enterprises with the ability to automate heavily time-consuming tasks and derive value from unstructured docs like emails, images, texts and more. The Indico Platform uses AI and ML technology to automate the intake and understanding of unstructured documents, emails, images, videos, audio files, and much more, giving structure to this unstructured data. As a result, enterprises get much more value from their existing structured data only software and technologies — including RPA, CRM, ERP, Analytics, and more.   We´re going to get into that and more…Slater, thank you for making the time to be on the show today…   Before we dig into the meat of what Indico is really all about, I thought it would be useful if you could tell us a bit about your background and about your journey, more broadly, that ultimately set the stage for founding of Indico…       Topic Areas Covered with Slater Victoroff    Talk about your training, background and work in SW and computer engineering that led to the development of the technology and Indico Talk about the technology development from SW engineering standpoint to achieve this breakthrough related to being able to analyze, automate unstructured data.  In the past (2016), you previously stated that Indico is `` like a co-pilot in some ways`` indicating ``We´re not automating away the person but taking the grunt work out of processes, allowing them to do much more what they enjoy doing, which is critical thinking.``   Expand upon what you mean by that.   Let´s talk about some of the actual use-case applications of the technology.  You serve major, marquis customers in the Insurance, Financial Services, Real Estate, Legal, Marketing, Retail, and other huge verticals.  Discuss some client use cases.  MetLife, etc. Why have you succeeded where others have failed?  How has Indico been able to beat out juggernauts such as IBM, Google, AWS, that spend billions on projects?   I wanted to talk for a moment about your martial arts training and background.  In the past you indicated that Entreprenuership and martial arts training have parallels.  What do you mean by that? At the end of 2020 Indico closed a $22M Series B round.  You´ve raised about $34M in total.  How do you view or see the need regarding additional capital?       Closing Remarks   Slater, what is a good way for those seeking additional information about Indico to get in touch?  Website – www.indicodata.ai Other contact methods?     Thank you for joining me for this edition of DVC.  I hope you found our discussion today with Slater Victoroff and Indico interesting and it gave you new insights and things to think about regarding machine learning, AI and its application to unstructured data.  I look forward to joining you on my next edition of DVC.  Thank You…

Irrespective of the application or the technology, a common problem among AI professionals always seems to be data. Is there enough of it? What do we prioritize? Is it clean? How do we annotate it? Today's guest, however, believes that AI is not data-limited but compute-limited. Joining us to share some very interesting insights on the subject matter is Slater Victoroff, Founder and Chief Technology Officer at Indico, an unstructured data platform that enables users to build innovative, mission-critical enterprise workflows that maximize opportunity, reduce risk, and accelerate revenue. Slater explains how he came to co-found Indico Data despite a previous admission that he believed that deep learning was dead. He explains what happened that unlocked deep learning, how he was influenced by the AlexNet paper, and how Indico goes about solving the problem of unstructured data.  Key Points From This Episode:How Slater Victoroff came to found Indico and how he came to understand the value of deep learning. How Indico's approach has evolved over time. What happened that unlocked deep learning and what inspired Slater to incorrectly believe it was over before it began. The event of the AlexNet paper published in 2012 and its influence on deep learning. Insight into the application of deep learning at Indico and their focus on human-machine interaction. What is meant by “solving the problem of unstructured data”.How Indico is reducing the price of building unstructured use cases.Thoughts on whether or not the downsizing of investment and hardware requirements of AI technology is a necessary outcome. The surprisingly low percentage of projects that succeed. Why Slater believes that AI today is not data-limited but compute-limited. Why resolving compute won't remove the need for clean annotated data.Whether or not determining which data to prioritize is still a computer vision problem. How the refocus into transfer learning has affected Indico's approach. What Slater is really excited about in the short and medium-term future of AI.Tweetables:“Deep learning is particularly useful for these sorts of unstructured use-cases, image, text, audio. And it's an incredibly powerful tool that allows us to attack these use cases in a way that we fundamentally weren't able to otherwise.” — @sl8rv [0:02:44]“By and large, AI today is not data-limited, it is compute limited. It is the only field in software that you can say that.” — @sl8rv [0:19:27]“That's really this next frontier though: This is where transfer learning is going next, this idea ‘Can I take visual information and language information? Can I understand that together in a comprehensive way, and then give you one interface to learn on top of that consolidated understanding of the world?'” — @sl8rv [0:26:05]“We have gone from asking the question ‘Is transfer learning possible?' to asking the question ‘What does it take to be the best in the world at transfer learning?'”. — @sl8rv [0:27:03]Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:"Visualizing and Understanding Convolutional Networks"Slater VictoroffSlater Victoroff on TwitterIndico Data

Slater Victoroff, Founder and CTO of Indico, joins Noah to talk about his startup journey and the next level of AI. His company Indico Data works on unstructured data. They use analytics with AI to create tools that arm the users and subject matter experts. One of the values Victoroff learned early on and abides by through his journey is humility and self-realization. After being proven wrong on his outlook that deep learning has reached its peak, he pivoted and founded Indico. This value is important towards constant improvement — both for yourself and for your business.Being in an industry that is often misunderstood, Victoroff sees the value in engaging in valuable conversations. He makes it a point to use this value to help educate prospects, clients, and peers. The end result is not only being able to sell his solution better but also spread a better perspective on AI.Victoroff thinks we are still at the cusp of AI's potential. A lot of AI is centered around structured data, so many companies are still using manual processes in unstructured data. There is still much room for improvement in the entire industry and Victoroff takes pride at leading the charge with his company.  Business leaders looking to upgrade their outlook and skills on the latest AI trends will love this discussion.Twitter - @sl8rvWebsite - slater.websiteQuora - https://www.quora.com/profile/Slater-Ryan-VictoroffCompany Website - indicodata.aiThis episode is brought to you by Content Allies.Content Allies helps B2B tech companies launch revenue-generating podcasts. MLOps Coffee Sessions #64 with Slater Victoroff, The Future of AI and ML in Process Automation. // Abstract The Unstructured Imperative Recent advances in AI have dramatically advanced the state of the art around unstructured data, especially in the spaces of NLP and computer vision. Despite this, the adoption of unstructured technologies has remained low. Why do you think that is? How have the dynamics changed in the last five years? Multimodal AI Historic AI approaches have generally been constrained to one data modality (i.e. text or image). Recently, a wide range of papers in image captioning and document understanding have emphasized the need for more sophisticated "multimodal" techniques which can fuse information from multiple modalities. What is multimodal learning, and why is it so promising? Why are we seeing such an explosion of activity? What is Indico doing in this space? Machine Teaching As methods of supervision become more complex and multi-faceted, many researchers have begun investigating the inverse problem. That is how do we design supervision systems that more naturally follow human processes? What are some interesting trends in "the space", and where can we expect this field to go in the next few years? // Bio Slater Victoroff is the Founder and CTO of Indico, an enterprise AI solution for unstructured content that emphasizes document understanding. Make sure you love it even when you hate it. I think the thing I often say about starting a company is it's pretty much the hardest thing a person can do. You don't even know if one in a million people has an easy time of it. I think you are completely right. Every single division is so difficult. I think the people I see that aren't successful are people that just think that it is going to be an easy pass to be a millionaire. It is not that. There are much easier paths to be a millionaire if you have some patience. If you want something that is going to let you make a mark on the world. And something that is going to respond and give you back what you put into it. That's what a start-up is. It is brutal. Make no mistake; however hard you think it is, it's going to be harder. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-inventive-journey/message

Deep learning was such an unpopular field of research in 2012 that there were only 3 labs in the world doing any research. Only in the last decade have we seen enormous progress in the fields of deep learning, machine learning (ML), and ultimately artificial intelligence (AI). Slater Victoroff, CTO and Founder of Indico Data, explains that AI is the automation of any process, with a computer, that would traditionally be completed by humans. People of a certain age will fondly remember an American TV game show called "Name That Tune", where contestants won prizes for correctly identifying a song with as few notes as possible played by an orchestra.  Name That Tune offers a fitting analogy to explain Indico's value proposition - automating complex processes involving unstructured content, using as little as 200 sample documents for its AI model to learn from.  With just a fraction of what their competitors require, Indico can name that tune (automate unstructured content workflows) in very few notes (documents), using a proprietary "transfer learning" algorithm.  Since Forrester Research estimates that up to 85% of all enterprise content is unstructured, this represents a huge untapped opportunity.    Founder/CTO Slater Victoroff is the driving force behind Indico's ambitious goal of helping organizations turn process into profit.  He joins us to discuss the path that led him to embrace transfer learning and what makes this technique ideal for automating workflows involving unstructured content of intertwined images and text.  Along the way we learn why "time on task" is a much more intuitive metric than ROI, why machine teaching is better than machine learning, and why companies are lying about how much data they actually have.

He has also educated hundreds of business users in the successful implementation of deep learning through a simple framework that helps executives rapidly accelerate the adoption of the technology in their businesses. Slater talks about the importance of effective communication, and how your skills as a storyteller can inspire and motivate others. He also discusses the importance of reflecting upon the “why” that drives us onwards.   KEY TAKEAWAYS:   TOP CAREER TIP Regardless of the field that you are in, so much of your ability to drive change will depend on the way you communicate and are able to create narratives that will inspire and lead others to go the distance.   WORST CAREER MOMENT Slater was a CEO, and while he did not underperform in the role, he found that his skill-set was not what the company deserved. Sometimes we need to recognize when we are not the right person for the job.   CAREER HIGHLIGHT Slater marks out the “feeling of togetherness” he experienced when bringing together a team, and the sense of high spirits and camaraderie that he helped to construct along with the team.   THE FUTURE OF CAREERS IN I.T The idea of building shared spaces where non-technical subject matter experts can contribute to the technical solutions being developed – a broad church of skill-sets and backgrounds that combine to enrich the IT sector.   THE REVEAL What first attracted you to a career in I.T.? – When Slater realized that empires can be built through technological means. What's the best career advice you received? – Slater has always found that the best way to advance his career is to not follow too much advice. What's the worst career advice you received? – That control makes you successful. What would you do if you started your career now? – Slater would still tread the path he's walked, as he believes his company has always been his calling. What are your current career objectives? – Growing Indico and helping their customers to be able to tell their own stories. What's your number one non-technical skill? – Acting and performance have helped Slater to deliver presentations more effectively. How do you keep your own career energized? – Talking to interesting people, and continuously improving his outlook, is the best way to keep the creative juices flowing. What do you do away from technology? – Martial arts, vegan baking, and reading science fiction..   FINAL CAREER TIP Don't forget the “why” and focus on the foundational reasons behind what it is that you're doing.   BEST MOMENTS (1:47) – Slater - “I never want to be doing something that I believe will get done without me” (4:52) – Slater - “So much of your ability to be effective and drive change in your organization is going to pegged to how well you can story-tell” (6:10) – Slater – “The further you go in an organization, the bigger the problems you're solving” (18:26) – Slater – “So many of our limitations are self-imposed. You can do so much on a laptop!”   ABOUT THE HOST – PHIL BURGESS Phil Burgess is an independent IT consultant who has spent the last 20 years helping organizations to design, develop, and implement software solutions.  Phil has always had an interest in helping others to develop and advance their careers.  And in 2017 Phil started the I.T. I would personally hope we could get a few steps further soon, so the explainability also increased. We will get there soon enough, I guess. Let's see if the technology is weatherproof and whether we can get there without another AI winter. I find it refreshing to talk with smart people who are also humble. When you talk to any business today and ask them about their top strategic IT goals using artificial intelligence and machine learning to help the business be “better” is often right at the top. It is not a surprise, is it? But not all in the AI garden is necessarily rosy, there are still many, including some high-profile, incidents of major AI/ML projects going bad, with millions of $’s spent for little or no return. Why is that? What does it mean for AI in the enterprise now and in the future? That is what we explore on this week’s podcast as I am joined by Slater Victoroff CTO at indico. What if I told you there is a company that is doing this kind of integration with 100X - 1000X less data, 10X faster deployment time, and 90% reduction in infrastructure and operating costs. Enter Indico, the first true B2B solution that I feel is really "plug and play". I interviewed Tom Wilde the CEO and Slater Victoroff the founder and CTO of the company. You're a business, and you've collected data - now how do you now make sense of it? Slater Victoroff's company Indico provides a sentiment analysis API product that specializes in this task. In this episode, we talk about about the common misconceptions that businesses have about where ‘big data' may be applicable, and the lessons he's learned by gaining more tangible insights from smaller sets of data for companies. He explains why big data is not necessarily better, and discusses the steps that companies should take early on to make sure they're prepared when it's time to apply machine learning to their processes.

The recent opinion piece Big Data Doesn't Exist on Tech Crunch by Slater Victoroff is an interesting discussion about the usefulness of data both big and small. Slater joins me this episode to discuss and expand on this discussion. Slater Victoroff is CEO of indico Data Solutions, a company whose services turn raw text and image data into human insight. He, and his co-founders, studied at Olin College of Engineering where indico was born. indico was then accepted into the "Techstars Accelarator Program" in the Fall of 2014 and went on to raise $3M in seed funding. His recent essay "Big Data Doesn't Exist" received a lot of traction on TechCrunch, and I have invited Slater to join me today to discuss his perspective and touch on a few topics in the machine learning space as well.
