Today, we're talking about a groundbreaking new book, “The Unit” by Adam Gamal and Kelly Kennedy. It delivers a look inside the military's most secretive special missions unit, which is so covert that even its name is classified. Our book reviewer is National Security reporter Jack Murphy who served as an Army Ranger, Sniper, and Special Forces operator within Joint Special Operations Command. He describes some stories inside the book, and shares personal anecdotes about the rare occasion when he encountered this covert team in the field. We are currently working our back channel communications to land interviews with authors Adam Gamal and Kelly Kennedy ... but the book is so damn intriguing, we couldn't wait to discuss it!Check out "The Unit" here:https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250278180/theunit Follow SF veteran and journalist Jack Murphy on X@JackMurphyRGRTo reach CBS Eye on Veterans, Host, Phil Briggsphil@connectingvets.comFollow on X@philbriggsVet@EyeOnVeteransSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Prior to founding Fires & Drums, Bobby Tolley was a US Army Staff Sergeant, assigned to a Special Missions Unit in Fort Bragg, NC. He completed my service and returned to New York in May 2016. Although he is proud of the accomplishments of his team during multiple combat deployments, he missed my family greatly. Eleven months later, his brother, FDNY Firefighter William Tolley, was tragically killed while fighting a fire in Brooklyn. Having learned how to deal with tremendous grief, he found a new purpose in life. His next mission would be to ensure that the world knew who William Tolley was and to support the first responder community. This is when Fires & Drums Foundation was born. Since its inception, the Foundation has provided direct financial support to many first responder families, sponsored a local park rehabilitation in Billy's name, provided aid to families in Kentucky, and provided transportation services for first responder families with our foundation van. As always, we cannot succeed in our mission without the generous support of others. The foundation has minimal overhead, 99% of proceeds go to those directly in need. Please consider joining us in our mission, and donate today at firesanddrums.org. We've joined forces with LEO Weekend! By supporting this show you are now helping our mission to serve the Law Enforcement Community and provide unforgettable experiences for the families of our nation's fallen heroes.
Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) DeLellis leads research focused on traumatic brain injury, including managing the longest continually running TBI surveillance project in the Special Operations community and co-authoring more than 30 articles on TBI in SOF. But in this episode we aren't here to discuss the research he's had success in, we're here to discuss the research he hasn't been able to get off the ground. On numerous occasions he has tried and failed to initiate research projects on nutrition for soldiers, and we brought him on to talk about why that might be. LTC (R) Delellis had a truly incredible career in the Army, with combat service in essentially every conflict the United States has participated in in the last four decades. He was on the ground in Operation Just Cause (Panama,) Operation Gothic Serpent (Mogadishu, Somalia), Operation Uphold Democracy (Haiti), Operation Deliberate Force (The Balkans), and eleven rotations in Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom. He entered active duty as a Private in 1983 and went on to serve as an Infantryman, Team Leader, Squad Leader, and Battalion Assistant Operations Sergeant for the 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Hunter Army Airfield. From 1988 to 1998 LTC DeLellis served as a Team Member and Team Leader in the Army's Special Missions Unit at Fort Bragg, NC. Upon graduating from Physician Assistant School, LTC DeLellis served as the Battalion PA for 3rd Battalion, 325th Infantry, 82nd Airborne division, and the Battalion PA for 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group. From 2004 to 2014 he served as a Squadron PA, Family Medicine Clinic Supervisor, and Deputy Surgeon for the Army's Special Missions Unit. LTC DeLellis served briefly as the Deputy Surgeon for the XVIII Airborne Corps before moving back to USASOC as the Chief of Medical Training and the Deputy Command Surgeon. Today, DeLellis is the Executive Director of the Fort Bragg Research Institute, a program of The Geneva Foundation, where he continues his important work supporting the operational needs of the warfighter. Today we hear the combat story of Patrick Moltrup, a former Marine, Soldier, CIA, and Special Operator who served as a Navy Special Warfare Combatant-Craft Crewmen (or SWCC). Patrick served 25 years in the military, much of it in the Special Operations community. Patrick is one of the very few who has been a part of the Marines, the Army National Guard, Navy, and CIA. He spent most of his time with the Marines and SWCC where he worked on all kinds of boats from RHiBs to Mark Vs. As a side note, I was once picked up on these boats and, to this day, these rides remain some of the most fun I ever had, particularly the times at night (it actually reminded me of flying a Kiowa low level with the doors off)! Patrick was also a Navy Corpsman (medic) and attached to various units, including Gold Squadron, one of the assault forces SEAL Team Six, which we hear about in this episode. After leaving the military, Patrick collaborated with Jason Lilley, another former special ops warrior, to create Savage Actual, a YouTube channel and brand where Patrick and Jason discuss games, gear, and the military. They're now working on a video game themselves, have been sponsored by a craft brewing company, and more. I hope you enjoy Patrick's combat story as much as I did. You may have caught Randy on How I Built This with Guy Raz. In this interview, we take a different direction and dig into the early experiences that laid the foundation for Randy’s future success. Randy is the founder and CEO of TRX, the human performance and training company. After rowing at USC where he studied history and martial arts, he had a 14-year career in the Navy as an officer, SEAL Operator and Squadron Commander of the SEALs Special Missions Unit. Following that, he got his MBA at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business where he invented the TRX Suspension Trainer. I met Randy in the mid 2000s and wrote about him and the TRX suspension trainer for Outside magazine. It struck me as a revolutionary way to train and a hell of a good idea. I ended up leaving journalism to go work for Randy and had a front-row seat as the company skyrocketed from a startup to a global business with over $50 million in annual revenue. TRX gear and training programs are widely used in the military, in gyms, and by pretty much every pro sports team on the planet. During his 26 years in the military, Todd was in the Marine Corps as an officer, a Marine Scout Sniper, and was part of Force Reconnaissance. In the U.S. Army, he was an Assault Commander in the Special Missions Unit. Todd has experience as a competitive bodybuilder, triathlete, adventure racer, and survivalist. Today, Todd is founder of Camp Zen Commando, located in the foothills of Lagunas, Costa Rica on the Pacific Coast, where he will soon be holding an 8-day Recalibration Retreat for leaders from around the world. GRP 135-Wherever you go, go with all your heart: A Special Missions Operator at war - We have a very special guest on for this week’s podcast. Joining me on today's episode is retired, Sergeant Major Jamey Caldwell. SGM Caldwell began his career as an Army Ranger before he went to selection to join the Army’s Special Missions Unit. On September 11th, 2001 he was forward deployed overseas. Within the coming weeks and months, his unit would be amongst the very first Americans to enter into Afghanistan. They were tasked with killing Osama Bin Laden. Bin Laden was tracked to the Tora Bora cave complex which is apart of the Spin Ghar mountain range in eastern Afghanistan. Caldwell would deploy into combat 14 times over the following 14 years in the war against terrorism. We discussed selection, leadership, mindset, and many other topics. Enjoy. We cover quite a lot of material on this episode of SOFREP Radio. To start off the show, our friend Fred Galvin is back on with us, this time with some more unfortunate news due to the recent death of Congressman Walter Jones. For those who don’t know, Jones was instrumental in helping Fred and his men that were a part of MARSOC 7 become vindicated. As you’ll hear Marine Corps Major Galvin say, Jones personally vowed to him in what was expected to be his final term in office, that he would fight to clear their names. He kept his promise. From there, friend of the show and former Air Force PJ, BK joins us. Many of you know BK from his writings, his podcast, and of course, his hammering of social justice warriors and #WokeVets via Twitter. Well, after several suspensions, BK has now been tossed off the platform and is forced to Tweet under a new account (which you can follow @BKActualPodcast.) We have a funny yet thought provoking discussion about the de-platforming of figures on social media and whether or not it tends to be politically driven. As usual, BK’s appearances are not for the easily offended. Last we end on an urgent note. Another friend of the show, Rob Trivino, is in need of your help. The former Special Missions Unit operator recently suffered a life altering condition that is sure to cost his family a great sum of expenses. A GoFundMe has been set up by those verified to be close with Rob, and he needs your help in reaching their goal. In great news, as of now, over $60K has been raised for the former operator, so let’s get this audience engaged and put them over the finish line. Rob fought for us, let’s fight for him. https://www.gofundme.com/robert-quotratquot-trivino? Learn more about your ad-choices at https://news.iheart.com/podcast-advertisers

It's hard to believe that we're already in September of this year, but as a I reflect on 2018 thus far, we've had some incredible guests on this podcast. When it comes to spec ops guys in the Army, we've had a wide array. So on this episode, I spotlight several of those guys from previous episodes in 2018. We start off with Nate Boyer. Nate's name is back in the news heavily with the recent signing of Colin Kaepernick to Nike, so we revisit Nate's open letter to Colin, followed by an in-person meeting which led to the now infamous kneeling during the National Anthem. Next is Todd Opalski, as he reflects on serving in both Marine Force Reconnaissance as well as Army Special Forces. That's followed by Special Missions Unit operator Rob Trivino on joining the Army and his time as an Army Ranger. Then is an excerpt from Delta Force operator Pat McNamara's first appearance on the show, with a great HALO jump story. We wrap up this special with our very own George Hand, another former Delta operator, getting into his origin story with us. Let me know how you liked this episode on Twitter or Instagram @SOFREPRadio or by email at sofrep.radio@sofrep.com, and maybe next special will be Navy SEALs. Doing this show, we meet some guys with incredibly interesting backgrounds. Todd Opalski's history is particularly unique though, making the transition from serving in the Marine Corps as an Officer, a Marine Scout Sniper, and a part of Force Reconnaissance, to then going into the Army and being an Assault Commander in the Special Missions Unit. Prior to that, Todd was also a natural bodybuilder. After leaving the military, Todd transitioned to the tech world in Silicon Valley. So, you may wonder, where does one go from there? Todd has a pretty awesome plan for 2019 to open Camp Zen Commando in Costa Rica. Zen Commando plans on instructing people in a wide array of skills from self-defense to yoga. Todd's even looking for some people to help him on this journey which he gets into with us. Enjoy this great in-studio interview, and be sure to leave a review on Apple Podcasts when you're done with it. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://news.iheart.com/podcast-advertisers
Rob Trivino has had a highly decorated military career from serving in the Special Missions Unit under the Army's Special Operations Command, serving in the Army's 18th Airborne Corps, as well as the 75th Ranger Regiment. We're honored to have him join us, and hear him open up about his history including being there at the inception of the war in Afghanistan. We also get into Rob's experience with General Stanley McChrystal while serving, who he could not speak more highly of. He details all of this in his book "A Warrior's Path: Lessons in Leadership." It's a great read, we suggest you pick it up. Currently, Rob is the founder and head instructor of Evergreen Mountain, LLC. Evergreen Mountain offers tactical classes of many varieties which you can see on their website at EverGreenMountainUSA.com. If you are in the New Mexico or Colorado Springs area and want to learn from one of the best, check them out. Also on Episode 362 we check our email, keep those coming to sofrep.radio@sofrep.com. Plus, we react to the announcement of an upcoming Space Force. Not much is known yet, but the response has been interesting. On for this week’s podcast is a 20-year veteran of the Army Special Operations Command is the owner of Storm Tactical Consulting Fred. Fred served as a Special Forces Medic for a number of years before trying out and getting selected to serve as an operator in a Special Missions Unit. We discussed the oversaturation of the tactical training industry, and some of the core principles of being an effective gunfighter i.e. mastering the basics. We talked about combat medicine and the evolution of trauma protocols as the wars progressed. I wanted to get Fred’s take on leadership. He shared a story of a time in Fallujah, Iraq where his Special Forces ODA could have easily avoided an ambush, but due to poor leadership, they walked right into one. Recently I’d listened to a popular podcast on iTunes where the host talked about how ISIS shocked everyone and kind of popped up out of nowhere. This couldn’t be further from the truth so Fred and I discussed a man named Abu Musab al-Zarqawi who is the ideological founder of ISIS but was killed in 2006 in Iraq. His followers have continued on the path set forth by him and in recent years we’ve seen the rise of the Islamic State. GRP 33-On this episode we have Jay Paisley back on the show. Jay served for 20 years in the US Army with 15 of those years in Special Forces. He was an 18 Delta Special Forces Medic with the 5th Special Forces Group, and went on to serve as a medic in a Special Missions Unit. We discuss the responses to mass shootings on the first responders side of the house. In some detail that most people aren’t discussing, and bring to light some ideas that are certainly worth exploring as a nation when it comes to trauma medicine. Wouldn’t it make sense for High Schools to teach students over the course of 4 years how to deal with basic trauma using tourniquets, and other devices? Below is an excerpt from our conversation: John Hendricks: The military in the last 15 years of constant deployments either to Iraq, Afghanistan, or elsewhere have dealt with mass casualty events. Guys are wounded from gunfights, stepping on mines and IED’s, and things like that. From what I understand, and I’m not 100 percent sure on the exact numbers, but the number of Soldiers, Marines, Airmen, and Sailors who survive wounds from the battlefield have increased. There’s obviously a reason for that. Can you explain why that is? Jay Paisley: The biggest breakthrough to come out of these battlefields in terms of medicine, and the military trauma model isn’t necessarily a scientific breakthrough but rather an academic breakthrough where we have pushed down and de-centralized to the lowest common dominator possible data driven, proven life saving techniques. What your seeing coming out of the Global War on Terror in success is: it’s the infantrymen, it’s the clerk, it’s the truck driver. They’re the ones who are intervening early on, and putting into place these medical treatments that are saving lives. It’s the medic that are within close proximity that are coming in to finish that initial treatment that was put on place. It’s the de-centralization that’s saving lives. We’re putting tourniquets in the hands of everybody. Not just the hands of the select few. Send questions to podcast@globalrecon.net www.globalrecon.net
