Jeff Depatie served 15 years in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), starting in the airborne infantry, then being accepted into Canada's elite special forces unit, Joint Task Force 2 (JTF2), as an assaulter and sniper. After multiple deployments, Depatie left the military and formed the Special Forces Experience (SFE), a community made of a collective of individuals rooted in the belief that challenge and adversity can be a springboard for growth in all aspects of life. His vision is to identify superior non-military men and bring them together to see if they collectively can solve some of the world's biggest issues from the ground up. “Being a tier one operator, I've had to make decisions and carry out policy that may not have been the popular choices but certainly what I believed to be the necessary choices. While I don't believe all decisions our governments make are morally correct, I know I've carried out unpopular missions for the greater good – the tough ones. The ones you don't hear about. The debate of what makes a man a ‘good man' is certainly one of morality. And since morality is tied to differing individual values, I define him as one who has the far-sightedness to serve the greater good of humanity on a micro and macro scale and not one that chooses to serve the popular decision.” Depatie is committed to maintaining peak physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual shape – in addition to constantly improving the courage it takes to will that strength. For years, he's been building his skills in the following crafts: Human Optimization Processes Elite-Team Selection Tactical shooting: Depatie has taught pistol, shotgun, carbine, and long-range shooting to incoming tier-1 operators. He was a part of the sniper unit that has the current world record for longest confirmed kill at 3.5 km (2.2 mi) Martial arts training in multiple disciplines: MMA, karate, combato, defendo, and spears Skydiving and paramotoring: With multiple qualifications and course completions for each Piloting aircrafts: Private, IFR, float/sky racing, general purpose bushcraft Professional driving: On/Off road and multiple ATV variants such as UTVs, dirt bikes, and on/off road motorcycles Open water scuba and diving CCNA/CCNP Cisco Certified Network Professional >50 confidential military courses and qualifications Depatie has spent years of his life in deserts, jungles, extreme cold, and other hardly inhabitable geographies. He also co-founded Meraki Collective, a coworking space designed to help revitalize a failing small town in Ontario. He has been a student and a seeker of adventure and human possibility. In the words of Master Yoda, “failure the greatest teacher there is.” #JTF2 #JointTaskForce2 #CanadianMilitary #CanadianArmy #CanadianVeteran #CanadianPodcast

During the emergence of ISIS, the JTF2 were some of the first western forces on the ground, engaging ISIS on the battlefield. We discussed the common ancestor of American and Canadian Special Operations, the "First Special Service Force," or "Devil's Brigade." The FSSF was a joint unit between the two countries, taking on some of the most dangerous missions during WW2. Canadian Snipers hold several of the world's longest kill shots ever recorded included a 3500-meter hit. We discussed the dynamics and culmination of years of cross-training with the British SAS and American Special ops that led to the skills Canadian long gunners now possess. Jeff now runs a company that puts civilians through a special forces selection type of experience and uses a method he calls "Post Traumatic Growth," or PTS. It’s 2005 and the “High Value Target” mission in Sadr City, Iraq is underway. Tyler Grey, an Assaulter on the Tier 1 Counter Terrorism Unit, is inside the house working his way slowly through the dark. Suddenly there’s gunfire in the hallway, followed by a massive explosion. Grey’s body takes the bulk force. He’s sent straight up in the air, hitting the ceiling and falling back down -- HARD. From his wrist to his elbow, his arm is in shreds and his artery is severed. Tyler Grey life as he knows it, will never be the same again. The night of terror in 2005, that nearly took Tyler Grey’s life, may have signaled the end of his career in the Special Forces, but it opened up a completely new role, that he could never have imagined possible -- going to Hollywood and playing the part of a Navy Seal. Tyler Grey showed everyone he was not out for the count – not by a long shot. He is now a producer and actor (who plays Trent) on the critically acclaimed CBS series “Seal Team”. Along with other Special Ops Veterans, he’s involved in every aspect of production to make sure it’s the real deal – an authenticity that hasn’t been seen at this level on Television before. But it goes beyond just making sure it’s a genuine portrayal of Navy Seals. Tyler Grey and the production team have a bigger mission. They want to provide a platform where Veterans’ real life, hard to talk about issues can be addressed through the storyline and characters -- in turn helping others understand those who have experienced the trauma of warfare. This is the remarkable story of how one man chose to overcome his own obstacles and dedicate his life helping others face theirs.

That's right, the name may ring a bell as you might remember a member of the unit beating the record of longest sniper kill at a mind blowing 3,540 meters. You'll hear the info from him, from the selection process to the characteristics of the Canadian operators he served alongside. An interesting tidbit he gets into is the secrecy around Canada's spec ops community, and how it differs from the now more high profile Navy SEALs for example. Currently, Jeff is running The Special Forces Experience as the Chief Course Architect. What they are is a group of seasoned operators giving the ultimate experience of what it means to serve in high stress combat situations for those guys out there who are dying to get a taste of what it's really like. There's an excellent video on Vimeo giving a sample of what it is that they do. On for this week’s podcast is a 20-year veteran of the Army Special Operations Command is the owner of Storm Tactical Consulting Fred. Fred served as a Special Forces Medic for a number of years before trying out and getting selected to serve as an operator in a Special Missions Unit. We discussed the oversaturation of the tactical training industry, and some of the core principles of being an effective gunfighter i.e. mastering the basics. We talked about combat medicine and the evolution of trauma protocols as the wars progressed. I wanted to get Fred’s take on leadership. He shared a story of a time in Fallujah, Iraq where his Special Forces ODA could have easily avoided an ambush, but due to poor leadership, they walked right into one. Recently I’d listened to a popular podcast on iTunes where the host talked about how ISIS shocked everyone and kind of popped up out of nowhere. This couldn’t be further from the truth so Fred and I discussed a man named Abu Musab al-Zarqawi who is the ideological founder of ISIS but was killed in 2006 in Iraq. His followers have continued on the path set forth by him and in recent years we’ve seen the rise of the Islamic State. Over a long career, Fred has served as an Assaulter, Breacher, Sniper, Human Intel Specialist, and finishing up as a Dog Handler. GRP 76-We have a special guest on for this week's podcast. Former Australian SAS trooper Jason Falla who is also the owner of a tactical training company called "Redback One" came on to talk about his journey in the Australian Special Forces world. He spent the first 6 years of his career with the 1st Commando Regiment before then going to SAS selection and finishing out the remaining 6 years of his military service as an SAS an assault team member and patrol medic of a water operations troop in 1 Squadron, 1st SAS Regiment. Jason shared a deployment story with us, and we discussed his post-military career where he worked as an instructor for what was at the time known as Blackwater. He now runs a successful tactical training company which employs former Tier 1 special ops guys working in several facets. We also covered some Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) as both Chantelle and Jason were Combat Medics respectively. Below is an excerpt from the podcast: Jason Falla: The Australian Special Operations Task Group rolled out after 9/11 into Afghanistan. We were primarily tasked with reconnaissance and surveillance. We had a large area of responsibility. We had an incident where one of our vehicles struck an anti-tank mine. Our patrol commander was in a bad way. It turned into a situation of being in a minefield. SGT Andy Russell lost a lot of blood. We called a MEDEVAC with American PJ's jumping in. Unfortunately, Andy died on the way to the hospital. We re-postured and made sure we dished back what we got there. Our next major operation over there was during Operation Anaconda we were the SAS patrol up there. We got a call that a U.S. helo had been shot down. A special operations component was in a break contact situation. We had to reposition ourselves and get eyes on the crash site and provide situational awareness and interdiction of enemy forces. It was a long arduous march in full kit up to an OP. We had an American Combat Controller attached to us. He started bringing in aircraft. We had B-52's coming in fast air, we were calling in predators hot with AC-130's going Winchester. We asked for a Bomb Damage Assessment (BDA) and an American voice came back " Well, I’m following a trail of cold dead bodies" Jason Falla: Web: www.redbackone.com Instagram: Redbackone Facebook: Redback One Twitter: @RedbackOne Global Recon: www.globalrecon.net IgRecon – Instagram BlackOpsMatter- Instagram Mission_Critical – Instagram IgRecon- Twitter Chantel Taylor: Instagram: Mission_Critical Facebook: Battleworn Music provided by Caspian: www.caspianmusic.net
