When the light switches off, it's too late.” Half of the world's children are exposed to violence every year, often leaving devastating, lasting impacts on their mental health. In this episode, Najat Maalla M'jid reflects on the importance of rapid intervention in cases of violence against children and the extraordinary courage and resilience of youth. "You hear some policymakers telling us our children are our future. They are not your future. You are the past; they are the present and they are their own future.”

This June, on behalf of RunTheWorld, I joined the Sierra Leone Marathon – an annual event hosted by the NGO, Street Child, with the aim to bring supporters together for a life-changing adventure in Sierra Leone. This is a recorded audio version of a blog I wrote where I share my recap from one week in Sierra Leone and some insight into why Street Child's development work is paramount in this part of the world. Access the full blog with images here.
This June, I will challenge myself in a rather unique and unconventional way and run my first ever (half) marathon in West Africa's Sierra Leone with RuntheWorld, supporting the work of NGO, Street Child. The marathon will raise money to provide education to vulnerable children in Sierra Leone by supporting local education projects in rural villages. I invited RuntheWorld founder and CEO, Carole Sanchez, and European Development Manager for Street Child, Marina López, on the show to speak about this amazing collaboration. Support my fundraiser at: https://www.facebook.com/donate/707086313835570/10158492532757765/ About RuntheWorld: RuntheWorld is a social enterprise providing adventure and sporting touristic experiences with a positive impact. They offer authentic experiences that involve local immersion and support social projects from a place of humility, optimism and solidarity. About Street Child: Street Child is a global organisation that helps vulnerable children to overcome barriers to gain access to the education they deserve. Their work in Sierra Leone: Street Child of Sierra Leone works with rural communities in some of the most remote parts of Sierra Leone, where children often miss out on the opportunity to gain the most basic literacy and numeracy skills. In places with no access to schools, they work in partnership with willing rural communities to build ‘first-ever schools' and identify members of the community to undertake formal distance teacher training. They also support struggling rural schools with teaching and learning materials and essential school repairs, alongside tailored teacher training that emphasises inclusive education. Why education? As the world's focus continues on the aftermath of the pandemic and the war unravelling in Ukraine, more than 300 million children around the world lack basic literacy skills, inhibited by poverty and lack of access to education. According to UNESCO, “Education is a human right and a force for sustainable development and peace.” If we are to achieve Sustainable Development Goal #4 - Quality Education, the work of organisations like Street Child is imperative. The event: It's not just a marathon. It's about one week's immersion in the local community, an adventure that has an impact on many lives. After visiting rural and urban projects and meeting the families that benefit from the program, I will run a unique and ambitious race through some of the most beautiful landscapes in the north of Sierra Leone that wind through exuberant green countryside and local communities.

What does having a call on your life look like? The simple answer to this question is to follow our discussion with guest George Wright. He allowed us into the most intimate part of himself as he remembers being called by God.As a child Gerge had an advantage that most didn’t, he grew up in a two-parent home and that was infused with love, strict upbringing, and a mother who knew where her help came from. God chose George Wright for a journey that most would have rejected from the onset. We learned that he lived a life that could have ended early, he knew that God was calling him for something but he was not ready to answer yes. We learned that he has a son that looks up to him and desires his guidance in learning about establishing a relationship with God. Our final question led to the most prolific response from our guest. We asked George what he would like to be remembered for when he left this earth and he said “I want to be remembered for using my social media platform and any other platforms to share Jesus with the loss.” What a way to end a segment!Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/CalledbyGod)

My guest on the podcast today is Beccy Waters. Beccy took up road cycling in 2011 to keep fit during her recovery from a running injury. She started competing on the road in 2014 but after 5 years of 'medium' and lows in predominantly regional races, her dwindling love for racing coincided with her graduation from University and an upcoming internship in Nepal with UK charity Street Child. In order to raise funds for the charity, Beccy embarked on an epic adventure by riding solo from London to Kathmandu, Nepal. At only 21 years of age, Beccy achieved an incredible goal and her story is an inspiration to anyone who is thinking of pushing themselves out of their comfort zone and literally, into the unknown. For more information of how you too can achieve your cycling ambitions visit www.roadstarzcycling.com or email nic@roadstarzcycling.com

Luis Congdon is passionate about helping others , whether in relationships or with on-line businesses. Saying he had a challenging youth is an understatement. His mother was a cocaine addictand was murdered when Luis was five. Homeless for three years, Luis was finally adopted by an American family who unfortunately divorced a short time later, leaving Luis frustrated and confused. All this hardship gave Luis a deep desire to understand love, healthy relationships and the concept of mindfulness.Contact InfoEmail: LuisCongdon@gmail.com (mention you heard Luis on Bruce's Mindfulness Mode Podcast and you will receive a personal response.)Podcast: Lasting Love Connection and Thriving LaunchWebsite: www.LastingLoveConnections.com www.PodcastersSecretWeapon.com www.ThrivingLaunch.comMost Influential PersonMy (adoptive) mother.Effect on EmotionsSlowing down and creating some space between my sensations and my reactions or my impulses.Thoughts on BreathingBreathing is responsible for seventy per cent of the toxic release in our bodies. It outperforms toxic dump of emotions and actual toxins in our body. It outperforms any other practice or way that our body releases toxins. Taking time to deepen your breath and breath into your stomach and really breathing into where two-thirds of our lungs exist produces in our body a sense of calmness. It also triggers the mind and the vagus nerve in the mind that everything is safe.Suggested ResourcesBook: Conscious Loving: The Journey to Co-Commitment by Gay HendricksApp: Pranayama Free - A meditation App which tells you when to breath.Advice for Newbie Start Simple.
