In this episode we talk about responsible leadership as well how important it is for all of us to take responsibility to share and tell our stories so that we do not give the power to others who may not know the origin of the story. We also talk about Mother Africa and how maybe all of us are Africans at heart. Colins shares several other very powerful stories to invite us to deep dive into our own beings and divine life missions. "We need to do our part", he said - "So that the Divine can do the rest". It is quite something to hear such words from a man. Colins has truly figured out the magic of this dance we call LIFE and he is not only enjoying it - but also thriving and inviting others to learn their part and then lead others. In all of it he is also bridging not only individuals and communities but also countries and continents with peace as the bridge. Yes he was brave to say yes to this mission - so that he is not only living with purpose, but also making a huge difference by being an amazing example to all of us. Eric's Perspective : A podcast series on African American art
In this episode, Eric speaks with renowned actress, collector, activist and art patron CCH Pounder; who talks about her passion of the arts and opens up about the dilemma she once faced about as a young girl -- on whether to pursue acting or become a visual artist. Although she decided to pursue acting, she speaks about her long time commitment to art and artists.. collecting artwork of artists from Africa and the African diaspora and the wonderful journey of establishing the first contemporary art museum in Dakar, Senegal with her late husband a native of Senegal, with the intention of showing Mother Africa what her children had been up to.. which the couple ended up donated the museum and its collections to the country. She discusses what she calls the "collectors story", the importance of having a direction and focus when collecting and the role she plays as an art detective; taking the time to research each artist and piece before acquiring an artwork. For more visit: www.ericsperspective.comGuest Bio: Guyanese–American actress Carol Christine Hilaria Pounder was born on December 25, 1952, in Georgetown, British Guiana (now Guyana). She was educated in England, and in 1970, at age 18, she moved to the United States, where she attended Ithaca College. She has appeared in numerous plays, films, television shows, and miniseries including the medical drama series ER, the FX police drama series The Shield, Sons of Anarchy and NCIS: New Orleans. All That Jazz (1979), Face/Off (1997), Orphan (2009), Avatar (2009) and Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019).When the cameras aren't rolling, Pounder plays active roles in the art world, as a patron, collector, former gallery owner. Pounder (whose collection in total includes about 500 pieces of art) and her late husband of 26 years, anthropologist Boubacar Kone had an art gallery in Los Angeles called the Pounder-Kone Art Space. Over the years, as they were buying pieces with the museum in mind, Pounder said their focus was on collecting work by African artists and artists from the African diaspora. "The idea was that we were looking to bring back the seeds from where they had spread," she said. "That way Africans could see what other people were doing in the world and see their influences.” In 1993, Pounder and her husband, a native of Senegal, founded and built the Musee Boribana, the first contemporary art museum in Dakar. In 2014, after a chance of meeting with the president of Xavier, Pounder easily convinced Dr. C. Reynold Verret to share his university walls with her and the couple donated the museum and its collections to the country. As one of the founders of Artists for a New South Africa, Pounder has energized awareness of post-apartheid and HIV/AIDS issues. In an interview, she said about the pandemic: "...We use actors and artists with the biggest voices so they can use every opportunity to talk about AIDS."

Many Black Americans feel connected to Africa. We wanted to share some of the rich histories that the land has to offer.
The Saibatu Mansaray Journey had an inspiring conversation with Chaplain (Colonel) Khallid Shabazz, the highest-ranking Muslim Chaplain in the military about his challenging journey as a youth and some key decisions he made that shaped his life into the man he is today. Chaplain Shabazz served as the chaplain during my first deployment to Iraq in 2005-2006, and we both agree those were trying times for all of us, but his religious leadership during that time kept me steadfast in the path of God. In this episode I interview Belinda Pearl the lovely mystic and intuitive healer with 20+ years of experience in the fields of Esoteric Healing and the Mystical Arts.I've never been to Africa. But hearing Belinda talk about the spirit of Mother Africa, her home country makes me want to experience Africa's beauty first hand. Not to mention, listening to Belinda's gorgeous South African only adds to the appeal. JIn this episode we talk about how being born and raised in Africa opened up Belinda's spiritual gifts from an early age. We discuss prophetic dreams and how we can use dream-time as a Sacred Ritual. I've started to remember my dreams since my discussion with Belinda and I've notoriously NEVER remembered my dreams.Belinda Pearl does Akashic Record readings. In this episode you will learn about what the Akashic records are and how we can use them as a guide on our spiritual, evolutionary healing journeys.

It's still the 50s vs. the 60s today in America. Those who are seekers vs. those who play by some imaginary set of rules conjured up by man's view of god and his beliefs about mysticism and magic. It's that thin layer just above consciousness when you leave the physical world and the perceptions and the worry and the prophets on the burning shore. What's funny now is that those who who pushed back in the 60s now seem more like their opponents in the fifties as they refuse to hand the baton off to younger street cats making love in a more interconnected, more image enhanced more digitized society. I want to live in America I do and my show exists because of non conformists like my guest who preferred to surround himself with a heterogenous mix of people you might find in a hotel on Mars while the Doors of Perception churn with tons of steel known as the Keystone Pipeline which will be buried underneath the wolves by the Silver Stream in the hallowed land that my guest pioneered hundreds if not thousands of times. My guest grew up in Wyoming and was inculcated with how it was is and will be. The game was over the fix was in until my guest went off to Wesleyan where he sought his own new found truths about existentialism and the multi-dimensional self. He tripped out with Timothy Leary and was back drinking Champagne from his Cowboy boot when boarding school Yay hoo Bob Weir reentered my guests life. It was at that point my guest turned his years of experiential learning into legacy. While Bobby worked on the melody my guest wrote poetry that wove it's way inside and out of the fabric of our culture. Gone astray you say everyday by the bay because voices tell me so...... My guest has always been on the edge of impulse. Creating terminology that encapsulates the insatiable web world. A world that his daughters are fully a part with new media and social media and communist media and The Electronic Frontier Foundation. His experience in The world of the Dead kept him in the moment of now because there is a fear down here we can't forget. It's got different names like perception and rumination and orthodoxy and ego all the things that my guest left in the tree tops to go looking for his kite. He is cagey, hard to corral, irascible and somewhat of a street scholar preferring experience over information. In 1999 he was ranked one of the top 25 most influential people in business even though he's not in financial services. In Jehovah's favorite choir he worked closely with a real choir boy named Brent Mydland helping him get stuff out of his system. Maybe you know how it feels, but maybe to you it don't seem so real. My guest has spent much of this century traveling to the origins of man in Africa. Mother Africa where he can bring his Bright blue ball to elucidate and inspire legions of young people who may not have every gadget or material good but the desire to seek, to evolve, to grow, see completion and change their world by being themselves..... The stratosphere is his church in conjunction with the soul which is what my show is about and is something my guest did not believe in until he tragically lost his soul mate Elizabeth Horner. Not a domestic partner, or someone who would make a good wife or husband but a soulmate. He docs emotionally and immediately either your in or your out and I'm all in. That wasn't always the case but all that Lightning will be my lightning too... Always inspiring, John Perry Barlow welcome to the JFS. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

Why is it that we get overwhelming amounts of information about events that happen in the U.S., Europe, and to some extend few Asian countries, but no on cares about Africa? Perhaps we should, a lot more than we do. Real Life is Fake, this is the Angry Rican!
The drums tell stories when played by masters. The traditional chanting with the drum elicits the spiritual sanctuary of slaves aboard ships sailing from Mother Africa to the islands. The slaves communicated amongst themselves, staying in the moment, keeping spirits high, as high as they could be. The drum and its rhythms made their way through the steel bands of the Bahamas and Danny Ray playing Cungas @ some Pink Flamingo Hotel in Miami Beach to Armando Peraza and George Shearin or Chano Pozo and Dizzy Gillespie. But what about the stories, the poems the clave beat in Congo Square or Wayne State when my guest attended school. When traditional earthy Afro-Centric Jazzers were exploring Free Music. Totally unencumbered by time- The total African American Experience....in the moment all the time everyday. My guest today is a creator. Forever creating his spirit transcends his own being. Some people wait a whole lifetime to figure this out. My guest started realizing his true nature back when Frank Strazzeri and Jimmy McGriff and Willis Jackson were blowing up Rochester at the social club his mom ran. At Wayne State the neighborhoods were communities, tribes with different factions but an understanding of the music. The power of the music and the sophistication of the music. It might have been the Jockey Club with Jimmy Smith and Donald Bailey. Or at the London House where Ed Thigpen held down the groove with Oscar Peterson and Ray Brown. The music and the rhythms have always been suppressed in this country which is why my guest is no longer living here. He lives in France where music is an inherent part of the cultural fabric of the people. It's a multi-colored fabric that reaches all across the world and acknowledged the great black musicians, artists and entertainers. You want to make 5 trillion dollars and be obligated to give nothing back to the culture then the US is the place to be. If you want to be recognized and appreciated as an artist within a successful non communist system most African musicians moved to Europe. All of a sudden we as a country are having big discussions about race. My guest felt this, saw this, experienced this decades ago and bounced out. He dug the Midwest what with his unheralded Black Artists Group of St. Louie.....when Dizzy and Blakey and Elvin were still circuiting this globe searching for that magic triangle of sound. My guest left an imprint with the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians and The Arts Ensemble of Chicago which pleasured audiences here in the States and abroad what with their colorful attire, storytelling and sheer creative genius that told the story of their people. A story getting lost in the homogenization of the Americas. My guest believes his number one goal is to please the audience, educate those who's ears are open and play on in the memory of Roy Brooks and Tony Williams and Buddy Rich and Joe Jones and Art Blakey and.........well. For a continent often referred to as “the motherland”, women have long played a pivotal role. Explore images of women in Francophone, Lusophone and Anglophone African literature and film. These portrayals cross time and place but our story begins with the traditional “Mother Africa” figure that appears in colonial poetry from Portuguese-speaking regions. Next, examine historical figures such as Nzinga, who fought against European colonialists and was later involved in the slave trade. Then, meet more recent figures from books portraying inter-racial relationships in post-colonial, African Islamic societies and women in polygamous families.

OMAR SOSAOmar Sosa (born April 10, 1965, in Camagüey, Cuba) is a composer, bandleader, and jazz pianist. Sosa began studying marimba at age eight, then switched to piano at the Escuela Nacional de Musica in Havana, where he studied jazz. Sosa moved to Quito, Ecuador, in 1993, then San Francisco, California, in 1995. In San Francisco he became deeply involved in the local Latin jazz scene and began a long collaboration with percussionist John Santos. He also made a series of recordings with producer Greg Landau, including the ground-breaking Oaktown Irawo, featuring Tower of Power drummer Dave Garibaldi, Cuban saxophonist Yosvany Terry and Cuban percussionist Jesus Diaz. Sosa and Landau recorded with Carlos “Patato” Valdes and Pancho Quinto and worked on several film scores. Around 1999 Sosa moved to Barcelona, Spain.Omar Sosa is one of the most versatile jazz artists on the scene today: composer, arranger, producer, pianist, percussionist, and bandleader. He fuses a wide range of world music and electronic elements with his native Afro-Cuban roots to create a fresh and original urban sound – all with a Latin jazz heart. On stage, Mr. Sosa is a charismatic figure, inspiring his fellow musicians with his dynamic playing and improvisational approach to the music – an approach full of raw emotional power and humor. Mr. Sosa invariably inspires audiences to their feet and to join him in chorus vocals, heightening the sense of spontaneity and connection.Mr. Sosa’s latest CD on Otá Records, Mulatos , features Latin jazz master Paquito D’Rivera on clarinet. The recording is an adventurous, finely wrought, and wholly delightful mélange of Cuban jazz, Latin dance grooves, French chanson, North African trance music, and European folk. It dances with rhythmic inspirations of Indian tabla, jazz drums, and studio mixing. Also featured is the delicate voice of the Arabic lute, the oud, and the composer himself on marimba. “Mulatos” was recently nominated for Latin Jazz Album of the Year by the NYC-based Jazz Journalists Association.Mr. Sosa’s music is a unique style of Afro-Cuban jazz, and while it is rooted in the folkloric traditions of the African Diaspora, he always takes an exploratory approach – never one to let orthodoxy stand in the way of his pursuit of freedom. Sosa offers a joyful mix of jazz and Afro-Caribbean rhythms, combining percussive forays inside the piano and a series of electronic effects with his inspired, passionate playing at the keyboard. His tempos are fluid, and his moods change freely. Sosa revels in the irresistible clave grooves of Latin jazz, while adding experimental touches to keep his listeners on their toes.Omar Sosa has released 15 recordings on the Oakland-based Otá Records label since 1997, including 2002’s GRAMMY-nominated Sentir . He performed recently with his Octet at the opening of Carnegie Hall’s new Zankel Hall, about which Alex Ross of The New Yorker remarked that Sosa has “a ferocious flair for rhythm and a keen musical wit”. Composer John Adams, who curated the opening of Carnegie Hall’s new venue, commented that “Sosa is a deeply creative musician with an extraordinary harmonic sense. His piano playing is sui generis : It has obvious roots in Cuban music, but he’s taken his approach to the keyboard into completely new regions”. And Don Heckman of The Los Angeles Times recently wrote “Sosa’s vision of contemporary jazz reaches across every imaginable boundary”. For more information, please visit www.melodia.com.Omar Sosa was nominated in 2003 for a BBC Radio 3 Award for World Music in the ‘Americas’ category, along with Ibrahim Ferrer, Caetano Veloso, and Os Tribalistas. He began 2004 with the debut of his first work for symphony orchestra, entitled From Our Mother , performed at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland by the Oakland East Bay Symphony under the direction of Michael Morgan. The 45-minute work in three movements, which combines folkloric elements from Cuba, Venezuela, and Ecuador with modern jazz harmonies, was co-commissioned by Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco and the Oakland East Bay Symphony, with partial funding from the Rockefeller FoundationEGGUN released 2013 (OTA1024)EGGUN: The Afri-Lectric Experience began as an Omar Sosa commission from the Barcelona Jazz Festival in 2009. The assignment: to compose and produce a tribute performance to Miles Davis’ classic recording, Kind Of Blue, on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. Inspired by various musical elements and motifs from Kind Of Blue, Omar wrote a suite of music honoring the spirit of freedom in Davis’ seminal work.Featuring trumpet and two saxophones, Eggun provides a medium for musical elements from Africa to shape and develop the music. The resulting jazz textures are further enhanced by the subtle and expressive use of electronic elements. At the heart of the recording is the spirit of Mother Africa. The featured horn players are Joo Kraus on trumpet (Germany),Leandro Saint-Hill on alto saxophone and flute (Cuba), and Peter Apfelbaum on tenor saxophone (U.S.A.). Omar’s longtime rhythm section of Marque Gilmore on drums (U.S.A.) and Childo Tomas on electric bass (Mozambique) create the foundation.Special guests on the project include Lionel Loueke on guitars (Benin),Marvin Sewell on guitars (U.S.A.), Pedro Martinez on Afro-Cuban percussion (Cuba), John Santos on percussion (U.S.A.), and Gustavo Ovalles on Afro-Venezuelan percussion (Venezuela). The CD was recorded primarily in Brooklyn, NY. Of particular interest is a set of sixInterludios interspersed among the primary tracks of the recording, inspired by melodic elements from the solos of Bill Evans.Eggun, in the West African spiritual practice of Ifá and its variousexpressions throughout the African Diaspora, are the spirits of those whohave gone before us, both in our immediate families and those who serve as our Spirit guides. From the liner notes, by Joan Cararach, artistic director of theBarcelona Jazz Festival:Harmony, peace, respect, freedom. That has been Omar Sosa’sresponse to our proposal: to revisit Kind of Blue, by Miles Davis, from his own (quite exceptional) aesthetic assumptions. The year was 2009. The 41st Voll-Damm Barcelona International Jazz Festival had hired drummer Jimmy Cobb – the only surviving member of the group’s original line-up who created that record – and a tribute band committed to revive, in concert, the memory of that iconic jazz piece. But Kind of Blue, rather than a museum piece, is a mysterious record with an intimacy to be disclosed very slowly, generation after generation, beyond the commonplaces of history books. That’s why we asked two artists who are familiar with our festival to revisit Kind of Blue from another perspective, following the artistic principles evoked by Bill Evans in his notes to the record signed by Davis: be yourself, be spontaneous, give all you have to give, everything you learned from those who came before and those you are sharing the road with. We selected Chano Domínguez, from Andalucía, who contributed Flamenco Sketches (Blue Note, 2012), and Cuban Omar Sosa, who did a powerful research of Miles Davis’ record.Eggun (ancestors) is not a typical record, just as Sosa is not a typical pianist. The artist, at first reluctant, became obsessed probing into Kind of Blue to find nothing else but the paradoxes of a never-ending search: love and indifference; exile and emigration; being here and now with the lessons of those who illuminated us; restless energy and deliberate contemplation; the uncanny twists and turns of our souls and the shades of our lives; the constant strain between grief and joy, contradictory and supplementary at the same time.Eggun essentially derives from the melodic cells of Kind of Blue’s solos and has the aim of honoring that record, which, let’s say it once more, is hardly known in spite of having been used and abused. Eggun is like all of Sosa’s works, an invitation to a journey plentiful with luxury, peace and sensuality (thanks, Baudelaire!). We have a welcome withAlejet – whitein Arabic – and El Alba. All the sounds of the African diaspora – where Moroccan bendir meets Dominican merengue and Puerto Rican plena: So All Freddie. The interludes, almost sacred invocations to the genius of Bill Evans. And a passionate desperation in the finale, as in records conceived the old way, like a narrative, followed by the final rest, grace in a religious sense, like an overflowing energy which at the end of the journey becomes pure togetherness. Kindness, in short. To visit Omar Sosa's website CLICK HERE
