This in-person book talk by Dr. Ori Z. Soltes was a discussion on “Between Thought & Action”, Fethullah Gulen`s intellectual biography of thoughts, words, and actions including interviews with Hizmet movement followers. This volume has two goals. One is to explore the life and the thought of Fethullah Gulen and the important educational and peace-inducing activities in which he and those inspired by him have been engaged for several decades. The outcome of those efforts—of creating schools and providing diverse social and cultural services that bring people together people from diverse backgrounds—has been to provide the face of civic and civil Islam as an antidote to the uglier side of political Islam. The second goal has been to make clear how the accusations against Mr. Gulen by the minions of Turkey`s President could hardly be more false: that what Gulen and the Hizmet (service) movement that he has inspired are ultimately about is improving the world and saving it from its uglier inclinations. A brief discussion of his life and thought has been supplemented by the voices of more than 70 interviews conducted over several years, with individuals intimate and more distant but all inspired to be part of the process of serving humanity. About the Author: Ori Z. Soltes teaches at Georgetown University across a range of disciplines, from art history and theology to philosophy and political history. He is the former Director of the B'nai B'rith Klutznick National Jewish Museum and has curated more than 85 exhibitions there and in other venues across the country and overseas. He has authored or edited 25 books and several hundred articles and essays. Recent volumes include “Our Sacred Signs: How Jewish, Christian, and Muslim Art Draw from the Same Source”; “Searching for Oneness: Mysticism in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam”; “Untangling the Web: Why the Middle East is a Mess and Always Has Been”; “Tradition and Transformation: Three Millennia of Jewish Art & Architecture”; and “God and the Goalposts: A Brief History of Religion, Sports, Politics, War, and Art”.

Six years ago, Türkiye faced its greatest internal threat in a generation. A military faction, hidden deep within the Turkish armed forces, launched a coup attempt on July 15, 2016, on the orders of the FETO terror group. That night, as coup plotters began occupying key parts of the country, hundreds of thousands of Turkish citizens took to the streets to take on the rogue soldiers. In the end, 251 people were dead and more than 2,200 were injured. But six years on, the failed coup's mastermind remains at large. Fethullah Gulen, who leads the FETO terror organisation, has been living under protection in the US state of Pennsylvania. Despite long-running disputes over the US's harbouring of terror suspects, some progress was made recently. On the eve of a NATO summit in Madrid, Sweden and Finland, agreed to stop supporting the FETO terror group. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan welcomed the move, saying it was the first time FETO was mentioned as a terror organisation by NATO. Gulen currently resides on 25 acres of land in rural Pennsylvania, and the Turkish government considers Gulen a CIA asset.  Danny and Miguel also discuss the US Diplomatic Boycott of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, fueled by the continued US claims of China committing Human Rights violations. The family of a prominent Turkish dissident hold grave fears for his safety after he disappeared in the central Asian republic of Kyrgyzstan. Orhan Inandi is a follower of the influential Muslim cleric, Fethullah Gulen, whom the Turkish government blames for the failed 2016 coup.

Today that may be surprising given the deep religiosity that has come to characterise President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his ruling Justice & Development Party (AKP). The extent to which Erdogan’s Islamist leanings has filtered into public life has caused many Turks to chafe, but the president has persisted in his imposition of a more religious character onto Turkey. Dr. Gökhan Bacık explained in a recent podcast interview with Ahval News’ Editor-in-Chief Yavuz Baydar that traditionally the state has long used religion to help govern Turkey. However, the relationship was traditionally more asymmetric than it may be today. “What we call Turkish state tradition has been more or less the same since the thirteenth century,” said Bacik, who teaches political science at Palacky University in the Czech Republic and is an expert on Turkish and Middle Eastern politics. Rulers in Turkey during the Seljuk, Ottoman and republican era have all used Islamic groups in different ways as part of their governance. As the host of the caliphate and while controlling Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem, Islam’s three holiest cities, Ottoman rulers relied especially on Islam to cement its legitimacy as the centre of the Muslim world. Once the Ottoman Empire collapsed, the new Turkish republic under Mustafa Kemal Ataturk underwent a process of reducing the power of Islam vis-a-vis the state, but not removing it completely. To this end, the Ministry of Religious Affairs was established in 1924 “to administrate the affairs related to faith and worship of the religion of Islam”. Bacik acknowledges that Islam in Turkish politics was frequently used as an “ideology of justification” and was not always a “dynamic paradigm.” To this end, Turkey’s government would be content to work with religious groups, but only so long as it was the dominant player. “When a group becomes too powerful to challenge the power elite, the state is quick to purge it,” said Bacik. This has been a defining feature in the story of President Erdogan’s rise to power and take-over of the state. For years, Erdogan was a member of numerous Islamist parties that were suppressed by the republican authorities, but once he became prime minister in 2003, Erdogan found a ready ally in the movement of Fethullah Gulen. Together, they took over numerous posts in the government and worked together to defang the military, who saw itself as the protector of state secularism. This partnership began crumbling after the Gezi Park protests and corruption investigations against the AKP in 2013. The drift reached a climax in 2016 after the failed coup attempt against Erdogan that he blamed on Gulen and his followers. Today they are regarded by terrorists by the Turkish state. In some sense, Erdogan is a part of both trends; using religion as an ideology of justification and increasing pressure on it when religious forces opposed to him becomes a force in its own right. “Erdogan has always been a part of this network, but skeptical of these religious orders,” Bacik explained.

Turkey's role in regional and global affairs has generated much debate in recent years. Turkish foreign policy initiatives as well as the country's humanitarian diplomacy in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic continue to shape regional dynamics. Turkey's continued presence in northern Syria, for instance, has provided stability in the aftermath of the US (partial) withdrawal. Turkish support for the UN-backed Libyan government in Tripoli created a balance of power, which created space for the ongoing diplomatic negotiations. Despite recent tensions in Eastern Mediterranean, Turkey has called for a peaceful resolution of outstanding maritime issues. Turkey continues to host close to 4 million refugees and it was one of the first countries to provide humanitarian help to Lebanon in the aftermath of the Beirut explosion. The US-Turkey relationship continues to experience significant difficulties such as the US support for the YPG, extradition of Fethullah Gulen and Turkey's exclusion from the F-35 program. However, as the Trump administration is willing to listen to Turkey's concerns seriously, the US' punitive talk has subsided and President Trump and President Erdogan set a goal to increase bilateral trade to the neighborhood of $100 billion. Kanter grew up in Turkey, which has been embroiled in a years-long fight over leadership of the nation. Kanter became involved in Turkish politics when he voiced support for Fethullah Gulen, a US based Muslim cleric who was blamed for a coup attempt by Turkey's president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Since the coup attempt, the Turkish government has cracked down on anyone with ties to Gulen, and has sought to extradite Kanter back to Turkey where he would almost certainly face severe punishment. Jeremy Schaap reported on Kanter's struggles for E:60 last year, and joins the show to discuss his findings. Then, Enes Kanter himself brings us his firsthand perspective on what it's like being a fugitive from his homeland.

For the past eight years, MerryLynn has lobbied legislators and spoken throughout Texas on the importance of passing legislation to require Texas’ charter school operators (who are appointed) to be American citizens, as is required of their counterparts, local elected school board trustees. Her concern is that there are over 35,000 students enrolled throughout the 58 campuses of the Turkish-run, taxpayer-funded, Harmony Charter Schools in Texas alone. The New York Times linked these schools to Fethullah Gulen, the controversial Turkish imam who lives in exile in Pennsylvania and has been accused by the Turkish government of instigating the July 15, 2016 coup in Turkey.

Gary's guest this week is photographer, explorer, and theatre artist Stephan Mazurek. Stephan  is a storyteller - on screens, on stages, on buildings and on the web. He is a director of photography, still photographer, playwright, theatre director and projection designer. His clients include The Discovery Channel, National Geographic Channel, Food Network and ESPN, as well as spot work for Skittles, Nikon, Oscar Mayer, McDonalds and Goo Gone! Stephan is an acclaimed documentary photographer. His favorite long form documentary project was the award-winning Louder Than a Bomb, which followed 10 Chicago area high school students for a year as they prepared for a poetry competition. He also spent more than a year in Turkey, Somalia, Iraq and Bosnia shooting Love is a Verb, which tells the fascinating story of Fethullah Gulen, the exiled religious leader of the transnational social movement that began in Turkey in the 1960s, and bears his name. Gulen has been in the news recently because Mike Flynn was offered $15 million if he could bring him back to Turkey. Here is a photo of Stephan filming in Somalia with an armed body guard. Documentary film-making has taken Stephan all over the world. He tells Booth One about a favorite place - Northern Ireland. He says there is something about "the pace, the color, the light" that make him feel comfortable there. Though he has never taken a photography class, still photography remains Stephan's first love because "I know when I have it." He tells us how he gets inspired "just walking around." As a theater artist, Stephan has worked on numerous productions, designing projections for plays and musicals, including Shining Lives at Northlight Theatre. He also designed projections for The Remembered City, part of the Tim Evans' Traffic series at Steppenwolf, which featured Tony Fitzpatrick and Steve Earle and was directed by our producer, Betsy Ingram. Stephan is currently working on a screenplay. We can't wait to hear what it's about and see the film! Gary and Stephan discuss the infinite variety of theatre experiences available these days in Chicago, and what memorable stage encounters stay with them through the years. Stephan's was in Spain, Gary's in Hamburg, Germany. Stephan admits to being highly selective when choosing to take on a theatrcal project, knowing that he will want to fully dive into the work. He's looking to be challenged, inspired and wholly committed to the process. Having gone to some of the more troubled spots in the world to "get the shot", Stephan relates a harrowing story about his interpreters in southern Turkey near the Syrian border while filming Love is a Verb. After getting him lost and then lying about their exact location, Stephan has decided that in future, he will demand translators instead - someone who will repeat his conversations word for word and not "interpret" what he is saying or asking. A good lesson learned. Kiss of Death: Frances Hansen, Who Wrote Poetry Across and Down The New York Times published 82 of Mrs. Hansen's crossword puzzles, starting in the 1960s. The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times and book publishers like Dell, Random House and Simon & Schuster also printed puzzles she constructed. A diabolical cruciverbalist, Hansen often used her own original poems and limericks as answers in the 21x21 grid that makes up the Sunday NYT magazine crossword puzzle. Many times clues were given backwards, and answers were to be entered back to front. She said that puzzles came to her in her sleep, left there by the "idea Fairy." Mrs. Hansen was 85.

Dramatic events in Turkey are leading to a crackdown on journalists and coverage. Turkey's media regulation body has revoked the licences of 24 radio and TV channels accused of links to US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, the man accused by the government of directing the coup. A list has also been circulating on a pro government account on twitter which names around 70 journalists which the government allegedly wishes to detain. Steve Hewlett speak to Yavuz Baydar, writer for the Arab Weekly and Munich's Süddeutsche Zeitung paper, whose name appears on this list, and Andrew Finkel, co-founder of P24 - an initiative to support independent Turkish media. In that time, he's overseen some key broadband projects, addressed the lack of diversity in the creative industries, and has been credited by some with helping the DCMS avoid the worst of government cuts in the most recent budgets. The life and works of Gülen are analyzed against the background of developments in Turkish society, and of spiritual Islamic tendencies in the transition from the Ottoman empire to the secular republic. Pim Valkenberg includes stories of his personal experiences with supporters of this movement, in a number of different countries, and analyzes the spiritual practices and the faith-based service of this movement that is also compared to some important Christian religious movements. Speakers Pim (Wilhelmus G.B.M.) Valkenberg is a professor of religion and culture at the Catholic University of America. He previously worked for the Diocese of Breda as a specialist on adult education, and for the Netherlands School of Advanced Studies in Theology and Religion as research fellow. He was an assistant and associate professor of dogmatic theology and the theology of religions at the Catholic University of Nijmegen (1987-2007), where he studied Arabic and Islam as well. He contributed to the establishment of a new Department of Religious Studies in 1991 with a focus on interreligious dialogue, and as associate dean of education between 1999 and 2004 he was responsible for the development of new programs of intercultural theology and pastoral studies. Between 2006 and 2011 he was a visiting professor and an associate professor of theology at Loyola University Maryland with a focus on Christian-Muslim relations. Paul L. Heck is Associate Professor of Islamic Studies in Georgetown University’s Department of Theology. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and is founding director of The Study of Religions across Civilizations (SORAC). His scholarly interests focus on the history of skepticism in Islam, mysticism and the role of spirituality in Muslim society, views on martyrdom in the three monotheist traditions, the phenomenon of theo-humanism, the emergent field of comparative scripture, and issues in political theology. Some of these themes were treated in Common Ground: Islam, Christianity and Religious Pluralism (2009). His most recent monograph is Skepticism in Classical Islam: Moments of Confusion (2013). His work overall, looking at three faith traditions through a single if refracted lens, seeks to bring sharper insight to our knowledge of the phenomenon of beliefs and their role in scholarly circles and society in general.

It provides a detailed study of Gülen’s account of the virtues and argues that they provide the key to understanding this thinker and the movement he inspired, from its initial establishment of hospitality houses through the growth of worldwide schools, hospitals, media outlets, charitable associations and dialogue centers. In addition, the book analyzes the distinctive virtues that shaped the Hizmet movement’s ethos as well as continue to sustain its expansive energy, from the core virtues of tolerance, hospitality, compassion and charity to a host of related virtues, including wisdom, humility, mildness, patience, mercy, integrity and hope. It also examines the Islamic and Sufi roots of Gülen’s understanding of the virtues as well as presents a comparative study of Gülen’s account of the virtues in dialogue with prominent thinkers of the Western philosophical tradition and the religious traditions of Christianity, Judaism and Buddhism. The Hizmet movement provides living witness to the power and efficacy of tolerance, dialogue and peaceful relations among diverse people. This book offers an insightful portrait of the core virtues of this movement and the scholar who fully explored them within his writing. It will appeal to readers interested in virtue ethics, character education, cross-cultural studies, interfaith dialogue and the role of moderate Islam today. Event Summary: Trudy Conway, a Professor of Philosophy takes a very different approach to the analysis of Fethullah Gulen and the Gulen movement. Her recent book uses her philosophical lens of inquiry to explore the fundamental virtue orientation, which she finds to be “central to the Gulen Movement”. In Conway’s opinion, this focus on virtues is the best way to understand the key foundation of the movement and thus understand its ultimate goal. Conway is convinced that understanding the “fundamental orientation of the movement” will give the best insights into the group. Furthermore, the source of this foundation is virtues. There is the fundamental question as to how virtues play out across different cultures, and one of especial importance, in pertinence to the Gulen movement, is the virtue of hospitality. Conway’s interest in this particular virtue was peaked while she lived and traveled in the Middle East. All of her exposure “convinced [her] that what is really central to the Islamic culture is the virtue of hospitality”, which transcends all Islamic groups. In Gulen movement’s literature, there is an emphasis on tolerance, however “what we [western societies] mean by tolerance is not what Islamic cultures are emphasizing”. According to Conway, tolerance is mistranslated. When tolerance is discussed in Western Society it is often used to describe the modern era, however the word itself has a negative origin. Tolerance is discussed as “forbearance”, “putting up with people” etc. However in the Islamic world, tolerance has a much more “positive, robust, richer [meaning], than just putting up with somebody.” This association with tolerance led Conway to question whether or not the main virtue was actually hospitality instead of tolerance. “The virtue [hospitality] is the condition, which enables the possibility of understanding in dialogue.” Conway read this quote on hospitality, which greatly emphasizes why hospitality is the key virtue of the movement; “hospitality involves the creation of a free space, where the stranger can enter and become a friend instead of an enemy. Hospitality is not to change people but to offer them space where change can take place. It is not to bring men and women over to our side but to offer freedom not disturbed by dividing lines.” This emphasis on virtues was key in Conway’s’ realization that the Gulen movement was not a political one. It is an inclusive movement that is cross-cultural in nature because “all societies value these basic, fundamental human goods… and virtues are manifestations of these preoccupations with these goods.” Conway believes the virtue of hospitality is the most integral of these because it “keeps you rooted with your own community while still being open to diversity of others”. This is not a political endeavor because “Gulen is calling us to a deepened understanding… he recognizes the importance of policies and laws… but political solutions are not sufficient, the possibilities of enduring peaceful interactions among persons depend on the far more demanding and substantial task of cultivating virtues within our individual selves, within our families, our societies.” The Gulen movement should be understood as a “grass-roots, organic movement that’s locally based” with a focus on creating deeper solutions. These solutions will endure overtime “through the fostering and cultivation of virtues”. This movement is applicable on a personal level, with the idea that “happiness and virtueness are linked”. The Gulen movement and Gulen’s ideas are crucial in the present global environment, in order to provide a different face to Islam. One that is much more moderate than the “superficial face” that is disseminated by the media. The ultimate goal of the Gulen movement that Conway was able to discover by studying the foundation of values is “the goal to create hospitable spaces to foster these virtues”. The Gulen movement creates a space for hospitality through education, and human development. This also fits into the Gulen’s ideas that suggest that to solve terrorism and violence, you need nonviolence and a furthering of education and human development, as well as a reduction of injustices that create initial human sufferings. The Gulen movement inspires Muslims to commit themselves to the goal of Peace and creates face-to-face encounters with the religion. The central idea and point of the movement and religion Conway identifies is virtue.  Trudy Conway began teaching at Mount Saint Mary’s in 1979. Prior to that she taught at Shiraz  University in Iran. She works in the area of contemporary philosophy and has published a book and  articles on the works of Wittgenstein and Gadamer. She has published on the topic of intercultural  understanding and dialogue and the hermeneutical issues and virtues associated with them. She has  also written on, and is actively involved in the issue of the death penalty. She regularly teaches  courses in the Veritascurriculum and a non-west course focusing on intercultural dialogue. She has offered a wide range of electives on topics in contemporary philosophy, specific moral virtues, and perspectives on the death penalty. The political trial of Fethullah Gülen, a moderate Turkish religious scholar and leader, at the turn of the 21st Century, helped greatly to expand civil liberties and strengthen democracy in Turkey. The trial began in 2000 in an Ankara state security court (now disbanded) and ended in 2008 in an appeals court in Gülen’s favor. Jim Harrington explores Gülen’s trial, examines the evolving process of Turkey’s efforts to enter the European Union, and discusses ways that the EU’s insistence on expanding civil liberties in Turkey and reforming the judicial system affected the outcome of the trial (and vice versa). He also discusses how the Gülen movement has helped the progress of democracy and civil society in Turkey and its prospects for the future, especially in light of the current government’s sustained attacks on civil and human rights generally, and on Gulen himself and Hizmet in particular. Harrington provides helpful in-depth background information for understanding the Gülen-related Hizmet movement in Turkey and around the world and the civil society movement it fosters, as well as reasons for opposition to the movement, especially in Turkey. James C Harrington, a human rights attorney with nearly four decades of experience, is founder and director of the Texas Civil Rights Project. He graduated from the School of Law at the University of Detroit, from where he also holds a Masters in philosophy. He has taught at the University of Texas School of Law as an adjunct professor for twenty-six years. Harrington has handled landmark civil rights cases, written and published widely, and served on human rights delegations in different areas of the world.Jim Harrington was born in Lansing, Michigan, and received his law degree in 1973 from the University of Detroit, from where he also had earned a Master’s degree in philosophy (1969)

Turkey's most important Islamic network, the Gulen movement, helped bring the ruling AK Party to power in 2002. But now it threatens to bring it down. Fethullah Gulen, the reclusive Muslim cleric who leads the movement, has hinted that he believes the AKP is no longer fit to govern. Presenter Edward Stourton travelled to Turkey to investigate the Gulen movement in 2011. He discovered unease amongst the Gulen's critics about the movement's influence in key institutions, including the police and judiciary.
