Susan Piver is the New York Times bestselling author of nine books, an internationally renowned Buddhist meditation teacher and public speaker, and former record industry professional, having worked at legendary independent Hip-Hop label Tommy Boy, as well as Rounder Records where she helped Alison Krauss achieve a Platinum album. Susan has been a guest on Oprah twice, has been a speaker at Harvard and Google, and founded the worlds largest online only meditation center - The Open Heart Project. But as she shares throughout the course of this highly engaging conversation with Jaymee, all of these accomplishments pale in comparison to her eventually discovering the writings and teachings of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche (posthumously), which indirectly led to a life-altering encounter with Shambhala Publications founder Samuel Bercholz, who became her Tibetan Buddhist teacher (and still is to this day). Jaymee surprises Susan with an (unannounced) pop in visit from Samuel deep into an episode that has been rank with generous smatterings of praise and tears of gratitude shed by her prior to his arrival, creating a sincere moment of magic for her on the anniversary of a car accident that almost took her life. The conversation between Jaymee and Susan is like hearing two long lost friends who have never met each other, an hour drenched in an ocean of openness and shared devotion. Discover how tools that help you understand the differences between people actually help you connect better with people. Get real about whether you want others to be what you want them to be, or what they really are.   In this episode, Heather and Susan discuss: Why no one knows where the enneagram came from.  Difference between exoteric vs esoteric teachings of Buddhism. Why it's such a painful time, and why things that have worked in the past may not work today. Two ways to work with difficult emotions: 1) Get away from it, but then your world shrinks. 2) Go towards it, and expand to include everything you feel.  How the enneagram, and other tools that help you understand the differences between people, actually help you feel love and connect better with other people. This can help you improve relationships.  How the enneagram is different from Myers-Briggs and DiSC. How a real relationship exists when you can answer the question, “Who is this person outside of my own mind?”  What you can transform when you can see where someone else's attention can go. Do I want you to be the person I want you to be, or the person that you really are?  How to spot when you're projecting.  In order for another person to understand you, you have to know yourself.  The benefit of being fully loved. In this episode we talk about:What the Enneagram is and why Piver finds it so helpfulWhat she means by warriorshipThe nine personality types, which she views as maps of our blind spotsWhy, unlike other personality systems, there is no test for the Enneagram (at least in Susan's view)And we talk about why Susan thinks the Enneagram and Buddhism mix so well even though on first blush it would seem to contradict the dharmic emphasis on the self being an illusionFull Shownotes: https://www.tenpercent.com/podcast-episode/susan-piver-495See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

It's that time of the week again folks! This week, I'm bringing back one of my all-time favourite episodes with one of my equally favourite people, Nicola Haggett. We recorded this episode back in January 2021 alongside the launch of my second book, How To Just Eat It. If you haven't already heard this episode, then I think it will have a lot to offer you. And even if you have already listened, I bet you'll get something new and different listening to it a second or even a third time around.  Nikki is body liberationist coach and mentor, professionally trained and experienced life coach, certified Body Trust provider and Open Heart Project meditation instructor. Nikki is also a mid-large, fat human whose lived experiences navigating the world as a fat person are a super important part of her work. In this episode, we dive into the world of embodiment, covering things like: How writing our body story can be an act of reclaiming the narratives of our bodies What exactly embodiment is and how we can find examples of it in our lives (babies, kids, cats!) The difference between embodiment and more ‘performative' or ‘hustle' self-care How embodiment can help us to feel connected to our bodies without necessarily ‘loving' or feeling ‘positive' about them Reclaiming pleasure, appetite, autonomy and more Finding spaces that feel safe to reconnect with your body As always, if you like this conversation, please share the love - give the episode a like on socials or share it with your family and friends, and hit subscribe to stay up to date on new episodes dropping weekly. Host Michael Carroll sits down with his long-time friend Susan Piver to talk about community, creativity, pain, loneliness, and other things we're afraid of. They also discuss how applying mindfulness impacts how we run a business, how we teach, and how we learn. Susan is a teacher and a New York Times bestselling author of nine books including The Hard Questions and The Four Noble Truths of Love. She teaches workshops and speaks on mindfulness, innovation, communication, relationships, and creativity. Susan's Open Heart Project is the largest virtual mindfulness community in the world. Stay tuned to the end of the show to hear about the new book she's working on and some exciting events she has coming up. Michael and Susan have both spent many years studying Buddhism, and they occasionally use some terms that might be unfamiliar: Sangha — Buddhist community Manjushri, Avalokiteshvara, and Vajrapani' — three personifications of Buddhist ideals: wisdom, compassion, and bravery Warrior — in Tibetan Buddhist traditions, one who combats the universal enemy: self-ignorance Dharma — Buddhist teachings Taking Your Seat — committing to practice of meditation and the path toward enlightenment The View — seeing the world clearly as it is, as opposed to seeing it through the filter of our habitual patterns Susan also mentions the Enneagram, which is a model of the human psyche mapped out into 9 interconnected personality types. This is not a Buddhist term, though her next project will explore the Enneagram through a Buddhist lens. ______________________ Visit appliedmindfulnesstraining.org to find free guided meditations, explore our publications and blog posts on mindfulness topics, and learn about our customized trainings to help you or your organization discover how to work with your mind. Today we have some counterintuitive relationship advice. If you're in a tough spot with your loved one, why would you want to have a deep chat about religion, politics, work, or your eating habits? Wouldn't that just make everything worse? My guest today says asking these hard questions is exactly what you should do.  Susan Piver is a fan favorite in TPH-world. She has been a practicing Buddhist for more than a quarter-century. She's a graduate of a Buddhist seminary, founder of The Open Heart Project, and a New York Times bestselling author of many books, including How Not to Be Afraid of Your Own Life. This month, she's releasing a revised and expanded edition of her blockbuster book, The Hard Questions: 100 Essential Questions to Ask Before You Say “I Do.” This book started out as a relationship tool for recently engaged couples, but it's taken on a much broader life. You can use it if your long-term relationship has hit a snag, if you've recently broken up with someone and want to understand why, or if you're single and just want to know yourself better. The book originally came out 20 years ago, but a lot has changed since then, so Susan has gone through and done a big rewrite.  In this conversation, we talk about: why hard questions are so key to building or rebuilding the foundation for a healthy relationship; the difference between love affairs and long-term relationships (and how failing to see the difference can tank your relationship); why breakups are rarely caused by lack of love, but instead by something else; and Susan will explore, from a Buddhist perspective, what happens when the boundaries between you and another person begin to dissolve – and what to watch out for when this happens. Also, there's (just barely!) still time to join us in our free Taming Anxiety Challenge. This ten-day meditation challenge will teach you how to understand your anxiety and give you practical tools for coping with the difficult thoughts and emotions that arise when you are anxious. And it's also a great way to kickstart your meditation practice.  You can join the Taming Anxiety Challenge by downloading the Ten Percent Happier app: https://10percenthappier.app.link/install. Jenna Hollenstein on compassion and witnessing the evolution of Dietetic practice, asking "is this a tipping point?" Jenna shares witnessing a new mood, observations of the current tipping point, the importance of compassion as we evolve as clinicians and as we witness the evolution of others, what compassion is and isn’t and how we embrace it, mindfulness and meditation; the notion of acceptance, making connections and a new training opportunity available for dietitians.  Here Fi and Jenna speak about: Living in NYC; its overstimulating nature and rich diversity with many opportunities for observation. Attending the 2019 FNCE; ‘The Superbowl for American Dietitians’ and its significantly different presence. The current tipping point within the dietetic community and profession - the hunger for IE and HAES exposure from students and dietitians early on in their careers. Why its important to enact self-compassion and not turn to self-aggression as we evolve and change. The misconceptions of self-compassion;  What it really is and what it isn’t. The need to balance feminine and masculine qualities. How we can embrace self-compassion through this environmental shift by being conscious and aware of our evolution and the evolution of others.  Compassion VS Idiot Compassion; understanding the complexities of the human experience and the need to call out / call in – and knowing it’s not easy!  Mindfulness in practice through connections and the notion of acceptance. It’s that time of year where the idea of love is glorified through romantic comedies and scenes of people pouring their hearts out for a chance to have a partner to spend the rest of their lives with. This notion of one-true, everlasting love--POP! Susan Piver, prolific writer on modern relationships, brings you back to the reality of what love really is and how to truly grasp it once and for all. Susan’s the New York Times bestselling author of nine books, her most recent, The Four Noble Truths of Love: Buddhist Wisdom for Modern Relationships, was released in May 2018. Susan has been a practicing Buddhist since 1995 and graduated from a Buddhist Seminary in 2004. She’s an internationally acclaimed meditation teacher known for her ability to translate ancient practices into modern life. Her work has been highly featured across all media including The Oprah Show and The New York Times, and in 2011, Susan launched The Open Heart Project, which is becoming the largest virtual mindfulness community in the world. Get ready to sink into a space of love within every relationship in your life--starting now! Key Takeaways: Your loving need. When most people long for one true love that will make everything just fall into place, they’re not really longing for companionship--it’s something much deeper and self-revealing. What they REALLY want is this . . . [06:35]. Your loving adjustment. The first noble truth in Buddhism describes how nothing in life is permanent. Everything changes; nothing stays the same–good or bad. It’s not a concept that’s new, so why is change so painful for us? The TRUTH is this . . . [16:14]. Your loving discomfort. It’s completely natural to have expectations. We live in a world where we expect people to be kind and honest to us--and why shouldn’t we? But how do you respond when your expectations are shattered? Next time this happens, turn it all around by asking yourself these TWO questions . . . [22:36]. Your loving embrace. Here’s what we know: the idea of love--the part where butterflies soar and everything is perfect--is fleeting. People change as well as your surrounding environments. So what’s the inside scoop for keeping that ‘magic’ alive in a relationship? The SECRET sauce is this . . . [36:59]. Tune in and turn the volume up for a dose of inspiration and life lessons. You're never more than One Idea Away from a whole, new reality. Thank you to our partners at iPEC Coaching! In this episode we chat to the amazing Susan Piver about her latest book The 4 Noble Truths of Love and understanding meditation as a path to love. Susan is a New York Times Best-Selling author of 9 books, a meditation teacher, a speaker and a long-time Buddhist practitioner. She runs the largest virtual mindfulness community in the world, the Open Heart Project, which has more than 30,000 members. Susan is incredibly wise, insightful and kind and we're so grateful for everything she shared with us. We discuss how Susan first became interested in Buddhism, why this particular spiritual path appealed to her and how this led to her becoming a meditation teacher. We explore the way that Susan views meditation as a path to love rather than a self-improvement technique or life-hack. Susan explains how through sitting with yourself in meditation and allowing yourself to just be who you are, this opens you up to gentleness. And as you practice softening towards yourself, this allows you to soften towards others and approach them with the same compassion and gentleness. We talk about the intersection between intimate relationships and self-love and how the way that you treat yourself and talk to yourself can bleed over into your intimate relationship and the way you talk to your partner. The closer you get to a person, the more intertwined you become and if you're someone who speaks harshly to yourself, as these boundaries become blurred, you'll probably find yourself speaking harshly to your partner. We also talk about the notion people have that you have to love yourself first in order to be in a healthy, loving relationship and why Susan believes this is a myth and in some ways, an act of aggression towards yourself. We go through her 4 Noble Truths of Love as a helpful way of understanding modern relationships and the personal insight Susan has gained from her own marriage of 20 years. Last but not least, we chat to Susan about the wisdom of the enneagram - an ancient typology tool that is extremely helpful in understanding yourself and others. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we enjoyed chatting to and learning from Susan. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/you-are-infinitely-loved/message

Susan Piver is a New York Times bestselling author of 9 books including her latest, The Four Noble Truths of Love: Buddhist Wisdom for Modern Relationships, and a renowned Buddhist teacher.  Susan joins me to talk about how to survive the inevitable discomfort of relationships and how she discovered what she’s called the Four Noble Truths of Love during a rough patch in her own marriage while thinking they might be through and not knowing where to begin. Which is when a voice whispered to Susan “begin at the beginning, at the beginning are four noble truths.”   In this episode, Susan Piver and I discuss: How to work with discomfort. Discernment is the byproduct of awareness, provides a sense of guidance and clarity. “I spent too many years trying to be a different kind of person.” --Susan Piver Awareness is an operating system that can help us to accept one another and make room for differences. I read and we discussed this passage from Susan’s book The Four Noble Truths of Love: Buddhist Wisdom for Modern Relationships, “Love seems custom made to evoke the deepest woundings and thereby forces you to choose over and over between you puny fearful self and your heroic genius self. The closer you get to another person the louder your sorrows shriek, the more frightened you become. The more you scare each other. All resulting in some very weird battles that have nothing to do with what’s actually happening.” The Four Noble Truths of Buddhism Life is suffering.  The cause of suffering. Grasping. The cessation of suffering. This condition can be alleviated. The path to no suffering. The noble eightfold path will lead you out of suffering. The eight steps are: Right View, Right Intention, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness, Right Concentration Susan’s Four Noble Truths of Love: The truth: Relationships are uncomfortable. The cause: Trying to make them comfortable is what makes them uncomfortable. The cessation: Meeting the discomfort together is love. How to work with it all: The eightfold path Compassion helps us to not see others behavior as a threat. Relationship suffering exposes everything about you.  How to soften into self and let yourself be as you are.  The importance of working on ourselves as individuals, how our minds mix, and why the way you talk to yourself is likely to bleed over into the way you talk to others.  “The more human I am, the more genuine I am, the less likely I am to weaponize my way of being against someone else.” --Susan Piver This is not a way to fix the mess, rather a a way to enter the mess.  What happens when we feel our feelings of unworthiness, stop fighting the feelings and relax with it and why doing so can help us to be more effective.  “Root of fearlessness is curiosity. Everybody knows how to be curious. Everyone can be fearless.” --Susan Piver Being really human in relationship with another person while you tolerate the discomfort, while you learn to soften and be kind towards yourself and one another even when you’re having all the big feelings. Subscribe and leave a review here in just seconds. This episode is brought to you by my courses: PCOS and Food Peace and Dietitians PCOS and Food Peace. You CAN make peace with food even with PCOS and I want to show you how. This episode's Dear Food letter: Dear Food,  I have recently been on an uphill battle to try and fix our relationship. After countless years of living a secret life with an unacknowledged eating disorder- consisting largely of restricting and bingeing- I made the change to recognize and treat my disordered eating patterns. I have since been diagnosed with an eating disorder and am currently adventuring through the recovery process with a support system of professionals and loved ones.  Although I can feel and appreciate the changes that I've made and the growth that I've experienced, there is one recurring thought I cannot let go of. I feel that it is keeping me trapped in my eating disorder world. Currently, I am gradually increasing my food intake and attempting to diversify the types of food that I consume. However, I'm finding this to be a painfully difficult experience because I cannot stop thinking that everyone is constantly judging me for what I eat. Essentially, whenever I eat something, I believe that other people are thinking to themselves, “wow, look at her eating that…she is eating that because she is fat”. This thought is strongest if I were to ever eat food that is constructed as “unhealthy”, but is also present if I were to eat food that is constructed as “healthy” but consume a lot of it. For example, when I eat a restaurant, I fear finishing my plate because I assume that the wait staff will judge me for eating all of the food and will judge my body.  That being said, I understand that this is an illogical believe to have. I have countless pieces of objective evidence (e.g., from doctors, the number on the scale, the size of clothing I wear) that indicate that I am not fat, I am not overweight. Yet, this evidence doesn't override my internal belief that my body is too big and that others are in agreeance with me. Throughout my recovery process, I have come to understand that I hold a strong core belief that my worth comes from my body and that I should always strive for a smaller body. I know this belief is problematic, but I can't stop agreeing and believing it.  To add one other layer to this puzzle, this thought- where others judge my body and believe that I shouldn't be eating because my body hasn't achieved the thin ideal it has been striving for- is particularly difficult for me to let go of because I hold this judgment on others. I find myself judging others for what they eat and I tend to, in my mind, idealize those with small bodies and not hold them to this same judgment. This has been a difficult piece for me to accept because it makes me feel so sad and ashamed to think that I am doing to others what I fear others are doing to me. This fear has fueled so many problematic behaviors and I know it is so unfair for me to hold this judgment on others.  I am wondering how I can overcome this. How do I remove this judgment that I place on myself and on others? How do I let go of this tiring, inaccurate mind-reading game I am constantly playing? Will I ever accept my body and accept the fact that it deserves to eat food- and a variety of foods?  Sincerely,  A life of judging and judgment  Show Notes: This episode's guest Jenna Hollenstein Jenna's book Eat to Love Appetites by Caroline Knapp(aff) Self compassion by Kristen Neff(aff) self-compassion.org Open Heart Project @ susanpiver.com The Places that Scare You by Pema Chodron (aff) Julie Dillon RD blog Link to subscribe to the Love Food's Food Peace Syllabus. Susan Piver: The Four Noble Truths of Love (Episode 199)

Productive Flourishing

Today’s guest joins us on the show for the fourth time. Susan Piver is the New York Times best-selling author of eight books, and the founder of The Open Heart Project, a completely virtual meditation center. Today, she and Charlie discuss the four noble truths of love, which is also the title of her new book. They also talk about how to minimize the suffering and discomfort that are part of all relationships. Key Takeaways: [2:40] - Susan’s new book is The Four Noble Truths of Love. This book presents a teaching that Susan made up, rather than her previous books that present Buddhist teachings. [5:15] - The four noble truths of love are based on the four noble truths in Buddhism, and reconfigured to apply to intimate relationships. The core of the book is about how to sustain relationships and give love. It is about the action of relationships. [8:10] - A relationship and a love affair are not the same thing. We assume our love affairs will turn into relationships, and our relationships will remain love affairs; unfortunately, this isn’t always the case. It’s important to identify which one you and your partner are doing, and not apply the same rules and expectations to both. [10:10] - The four noble truths in Buddhism are: 1) “The Truth” - Life is suffering. 2) “The Cause of Suffering” - Pretending that the first noble truth is not true. 3) “The Sensation of Suffering” - Now that you know what you’re doing to cause suffering, you can stop it. 4) The Eightfold Path - Eight things you do every day to bring about sensation of suffering. [12:00] - When Susan applied these four noble truths to her love life, she came up with her own four noble truths of love: 1) Relationships are uncomfortable - They never stabilize. 2) Thinking that relationships should be comfortable and stable is actually what causes more discomfort and instability than anything else. 3) Meeting that discomfort and instability together is love. 4) Three steps to achieve finding this love. [16:05] - Often in relationships we expect things to go a certain way, and when they don’t, that is where the suffering comes from. They don’t have to be big things; the day to day things can cause a tremendous amount of irritation. It’s important to notice these things, and pay attention to the suffering without making it more powerful than it is. [21:22] - What is most frightening to another person in a relationship is when we sense unconsciousness on the part of our partner. Mindfulness is key. The more awareness we can express, the better, especially about things you know your partner cares about. [28:05] - When the small things start to build up and become too much, that’s when we can return to the four noble truths of love. The closer we are with someone, the more our lives mix, and the less we are able to see them. The way we talk to ourselves mixes with the way we talk to the other person. And the person we love most often hears this voice as much as we do ourselves. The more you can espouse a kind voice in the way you talk to yourself, the more it will be heard by your partner as well. [30:35] - Charlie talks about the idea of how we form superorganisms in tight relationships. Meditation and mindfulness can be a reminder that we are our own beings with our own separate ways. The key thing to develop is awareness on three levels: you, your partner, and the both of you together (me, you, us). [36:50] - Buddhism is a doing/ practicing religion. In her book The Four Noble Truths of Love, Susan applied this to five steps to development and the eightfold path of love. The five steps are a way to develop confidence. Susan translated them into how they can apply to two people. The five steps are: 1) Clean up your room. 2) Eat good food/Share food today. 3) Pay attention to the way you look. 4) Spend more time together with people who you like and who like you. 5) Spend time together in the natural world. Doing these five things helps build a container for love that attracts love. [45:55] - The fourth noble truth of love has three components. The first type of qualities are foundational qualities (good manners and honesty). The second type of quality is called openness (the other person has equal importance to yourself in your relationship). The third quality is going beyond conventional view (look at all that happens between you and your partner as a way to deepen intimacy). [48:30] - Susan’s invitation/ challenge for listeners is to experience your deepest longings for love without a storyline attached to them. Just feel the longing; the longing is good. Subscribe to the Emerging Women podcast on iTunes. Transcript Chantal Pierrat: Hello, and welcome, Susan. Susan Piver: Thank you, I’m glad to be here. CP: Yes, I am too. I have lots of juicy questions for you that are relevant to my life, so I’m glad we’ve carved out the time. Let’s start with—well, we had such a great conversation the first time we met last month, and I just wanted to go in a million different directions. But today I want to talk about fear. You have a couple of books on fear, [including] Freedom from Fear, which I think is your most recent book, and then a book with a very interesting title, How Not to Be Afraid of Your Own Life: Opening Your Heart to Confidence, Intimacy, and Joy. And I know that one is more practical; Freedom from Fear is a seven-day meditation program. But I’m curious to see, just in your own life, how this topic unfolded for you, and how it came into this—and you also have some audio that you’ve done with Jen Louden. So how did this come through you, and what do you have to say about fear? SP: OK, well, I always feel like my biggest qualification is my own fear, because I just experience a lot of fear. I always have throughout my life and I still do. It’s something that each of us has to figure out a way to meet. And I was thinking of writing a book about meditation practice, and I wrote a proposal for that book. And in the proposal, there was a line that said something like, “Meditation is so awesome because it teaches you how to not be afraid of your own life.” And when the publisher saw that line, they said, “That’s the title.” So I said, “OK.” [Laughs] It was very easy to gear the content around the topic of fear because meditation—in particular, I suppose, in the style that I practice, the Shambhala Buddhist tradition—is seen as a gesture of warriorship. And one of the fruits of meditation practice is courage and wakefulness and curiosity and joy. So those were the things that I wanted to focus on, and in doing so, also had to focus on why these wonderful, wonderful qualities are so difficult for us to find and hold. CP: So right now, in The Atlantic—and I just picked this up so I haven’t read it—there’s an article, it’s on the cover, and they’re calling it “Closing the Confidence Gap,” just talking about even highly successful women are lacking in confidence in their jobs and in the work that they do, even though they’re seen and rewarded for their work and they’re outwardly recognized as being successful. I know for myself, building a business and feeling confident that I can create this platform that is Emerging Women, and yet the fear and the lack of confidence—it’s like you can be confident and fearful or confident and not confident at the same time. How is that? SP: Isn’t that interesting?
