Switcher.ie's Top 5 Money-Saving Tips to Beat April 1st Price Hikes

Irish Tech News Audio Articles

To combat this year's hikes, Switcher.ie has put together some inflation-busting, money-saving tips, and our expert, Eoin Clarke, comments on how to futureproof against annual price rises. 1. Bundle your broadband, TV & mobile Combine your broadband, TV and mobile services into a single package to reduce your monthly expenses. Many Irish households rely on streaming services like Sky Stream and Netflix for sports and entertainment. Bundling broadband & TV, and adding your mobile SIM-only plan can lead to significant savings compared to individual plans. 2. Shop around to find the best deals Plan ahead and start your broadband bargain hunt before your contract ends. Use comparison websites with an eircode checker to quickly find the cheapest options in your location. Ensure you factor in the price after the promotional period, as well as crucial features such as speed, contract duration, and any rewards or perks. 3. Haggle for a better deal Tell your provider you're thinking of leaving before jumping, and they may just pull out all the stops to keep you. Use comparison sites to find cheaper options and ask for a price match. You might get a lower price, but it's not guaranteed. 4. Keep it SIMple Save money with a SIM-only deal. If your phone contract is up and you're still happy with your phone, switch to SIM-only. Unlike bill-pay contracts, which include the cost of a new device, SIM-only deals just charge for calls, texts, and data, offering huge savings and flexible, shorter contracts. 5. Grab a multi-cover discount Use a multi-gadget cover to save money on gadget insurance. If you've got a bunch of gadgets, like an iPhone, tablet, laptop, and smartwatch, combine cover for up to 15% off. Only insure new gadgets and check your home insurance first to avoid doubling up. Eoin Clarke, Telecoms Expert at Switcher.ie comments: "While energy and food prices have stabilised, households will face a wave of price hikes on April Fools Day. Once again, some telecom giants are pushing up prices over the rate of inflation, with some SIM-only contracts surging by over 10%. The good news is that it's a buyer's market for broadband and mobile users right now. Providers are fighting for new customers, leading to some healthy discounts and great perks. Our advice is to make the most of this clamour by switching providers when your contract ends. The best deals are always on offer to newcomers, so take advantage of any introductory discounts, welcome rewards or freebies. The cheapest deal isn't always the best value in the long term, so compare contract length and 'thereafter' price once your discount ends. If peace of mind is more important, you may prefer to lock into a deal with long-term savings, or if you're on the hunt for a SIM-only plan, seek a 'price for life' deal."

When it comes to topics I talk about regularly, I often assume that everyone has already heard me say it. There are insights and ideas I speak on often not just with my clients, but also on the podcast. However, the truth is, when we're sharing content, not everyone catches every piece. So today, I'm thrilled to share five key things you should know about me before we work together. Whether you're a new client curious about my process or someone who's followed me for a while but wants to understand more deeply, this is for you. I address some of the most frequent questions I get from clients and clarify my working style and values: 1. I Get InvolvedFirst things first, I want you to know that when we work together, I get involved. My approach is collaborative; I'm not the lawyer for you if you're looking for someone to simply draft documents without any input from you. To create truly effective legal documents, I need to understand the intricacies of your business. We'll have conversations, and I'll ask you lots of questions to make sure your documents are tailor-made for your specific needs.2. I Don't Haggle on FeesThe second key point is that I don't haggle on fees. My pricing is based on the value I provide and is structured in a way that's transparent and predictable. You'll always know upfront what you're paying for; there are no surprise invoices. I believe in a value-based fee structure because it aligns with the integrity and quality of service I aim to offer. I don't think small business owners should undervalue their services, and I follow the same principle.3. No TemplatesThirdly, I will not sell you a template. I strongly believe that DIY templates don't belong in legal matters. Each business is unique, and cookie-cutter solutions won't provide the protection or functionality you need. Instead, I'll work with you to create documents that are customised for your business. This ensures they're robust and tailored specifically to what you need.4. I Treat Your Legals Like My OwnNext on the list, I will treat your legal documents as if they were my own. This means I take the time and effort to ensure they are absolutely perfect. I don't believe in a “one size fits all” approach. I'll get to know you and your business deeply to create stellar documents that serve you well.5. I Build Long-Term Client RelationshipsFinally, I rarely work with clients as a one-off engagement. I genuinely love what I do and care deeply about the businesses I work with. This often results in long-term relationships where clients feel comfortable calling me for advice as their businesses evolve. My goal is to be a trusted advisor who enriches your business journey and helps you avoid potential pitfalls.I hope this episode is helpful if you're thinking of reaching out to or working with me, and that you now have a better understanding of who it is that I am. I encourage you to come visit me over at Instagram if you have any questions about what we spoke about today.Happy listening! LINKS:Episode Website: hereDiscover the Masterclass Series hereCheck Your Legals with the Essential Legal Checklist hereBook a Free 20-minute Initial Consult with me hereJoin me on Instagram here

We look at his reverence and audacity as he prays, as well as how his prayer nods towards the way Jesus will teach us to pray much later. And, oh, a little bit on the Doctrine of the Trinity to kick things off (don't worry, it makes sense).

Her Haggle Haus truck is a mini boutique you can find at the Riverside Farmer's Market as well as other markets around town. There are clothes for men, women, and children, a changing room to try things on, and just as the name suggests- you're free to negotiate on the prices. - What to look for in a rowing boat, how to assess wear and tear and what can (and cannot) be repaired. Holes flagged out Hairline cracks on riggers Speak to Boatbuilder 01:30 What to look for in a rowing boat? Right size for your body weight is the number one consideration. Then check our podcast last week on buying a new boat - the same issues apply. What is your budget? 03:00 Height of deck relative to the water surface will show you whether a boat is the correct size for you. At the extremes of the weight ranges you should check carefully whether it will fit you. 04:30 Find the serial number of the boat you are interested in. When did serial numbers start getting added to rowing boats? Serial Numbers Post 1992 Barcelona Olympics it became standard practice based on FISA (World Rowing) boat standards. Call the boat builder what was the build weight? Year built? What hull shape was it designed for. History of the boat - how many owners has it had? 08:30 What questions to ask the vendor. - Major repairs or structural damage - Is it heavy? Know how much a 1x weighs on minimum (14 kg). - Cracks or blemishes on a rigger e.g. hairline fractures - How much has it been rowed? 10:00 What comes with the boat? If this is your first boat purchase - rowing electronics, slings, oars to set you up. 11:00 What will make it the way you want it? Consider the wear and tear on parts Shoe size may be wrong but isn't a reason not to buy a boat. e.g. oarlocks, slides, seat wheels, shoes, canvasses made from canvas all can be replaced. 14:00 Red flags which you should be alert for - Hull pits and cracks - Boat skin condition - is it oxidised? - Gel coat condition - turn your head and look sideways down the hull. - Check the dents using a torch - if above the water line it's more cosmetic. But if it's below the water line it could be more serious and cause leaks. Always try the boat and use your instinct - does it feel nice to row? 17:00 What repairs has it had? Did it go back to the boatbuilder to be fixed? If it's painted over you cannot see the repair. Major repairs are a red flag. Any repair will add weight to the boat. Does this matter to you? 18:45 DIY Improvements to your boat Look at the V-splash saxboard behind the cockpit - wobble them with your hands and see how robust they are. Also stand next to the cockpit next to the shoulders/knees where the riggers attach - hold the sides of the boat and pull your hands towards each other. A broken shoulder lowers the value and needs repair For wing rigger boats - check for hairline cracks along the flange where the riggers mount. You might need a bow ball, the number slot, scull grips. 21:00 Respray the paint and your boat will look like new. Hull integrity is the key consideration. Marlene refurbished her own first single. Rigger holes - check they aren't flogged out and enlarged. This means there is play in the rigger - you will need to get these fixed. Over-tightened rigger bolts / nuts can add indentations to the shoulder and you can add a large penny washer to hold the rigger more securely. 22:30 Haggle on the price. Any purchase is a negotiation. Ask the vendor to suggest a price reduction if there are things you want fixed. And ask the boat builder what they think it could be worth (ballpark figure). Some boats hold their value well if taken care of. Ask the vendor to suggest the price first. Want easy live streams like this? Instant broadcasts to Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn. Lusciously located at the confluence of the mighty Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers, the very name Phnom Penh conjures up an image of the exotic. I recently visited Cambodia's capital with Emerald Cruises on their magnificent week-long float from Ho Chi Minh City. From the fluttering saffron robes of passing monks to the glimmering spires of the Royal Palace, Phnom Penh struts its Buddhist stripes at every turn. But the Cambodian capital's shine was egregiously tarnished by the ravages of the Khmer Rouge regime. Forty years on, Phnom Penh aspires to be as electric as Bangkok or Ho Chi Minh City, with swanky new developments and the hip, edgy design boom revving up the city centre's allure, and eye-catching skyscrapers extravagantly reframing the skyline. Come nightfall, there is no question that Phnom Penh is one of the most illuminated cities in Asia, radiantly aglow in the city's insatiable obsession with playful, escapist light shows. The city is lit! But the shameful shadow of Pol Pot and his abominable regime is a stain that cannot be airbrushed away – or joyfully dressed up in fairy lights. The past bastardry is still central to the city narrative. Remarkably, when the Khmer Rouge grabbed power, it forced most of its three million residents into the countryside, apart of its grand vision for a classless agrarian society. Today, Phnom Penh resembles a city of startling contrasts, from extreme poverty to ostentatious wealth. It's a city gripped by entrenched state corruption and the reaffirming kindness of locals you meet. Virtually everyone I chatted to was scathing of Cambodia's slavish dependence on China. Nearly 50% of their public debt is owed to China, with more “debt trap” loans in the works. Phnom Penh is a city where the streets have no name – merely numbers. The legacy of the Khmer Rouge looms large as one of the central reasons to visit the city and to reflect on history's epic horrors, dipping into the darkest corners of the country's traumatised past. It's an unvarnished, gut-wrenching experience. My first shore excursion with Emerald Cruises was to one of Cambodia's biggest Killing Fields. Under Pol Pot's maniacal rule from 1975 to 1979, roughly a quarter of Cambodia's population was murdered, the genocide of roughly 2 million people. Tens of thousands of Khmer Rouge prisoners who had been tortured at the infamous S-21 prison were then taken just out of town to the Choeung Ek extermination camp, which was previously a Chinese cemetery and longan orchard. Prisoners would arrive blind-folded unaware of the brutality that was about to unfold. Our guide pointed out the tree named the Killing Tree, which is where children would be beaten to death. Another tree has been named the Music Tree. The Khmer Rouge executioners would hang speakers from the tree and blast out loud music to drown out the screams of people being bludgeoned to death, so that those awaiting their fate remained oblivious to the evil about to be unleashed. The Killing Tree. Photo / Mike Yardley My guide soberly remarked that most people were viciously bludgeoned to death by farm implements, because the Khmer Rouge didn't want to waste precious money on bullets. The most sickening spectacle at this site are the shards of bones and clothing sticking up from the vast mounds of dirt that mark the mass graves. Every time it rains, the earth reveals more and more of its sinister secrets, lurking beneath the surface. Most mass graves have been left untouched. Today the camp is a memorial site. A monumental 17-storey glass stupa, built 25 years ago, rises up from the centre, filled with 8,000 skulls, exhumed from the mass graves nearby. It's a harrowing spectacle – steel yourself. Many of the skulls, which are grouped according to age and sex, bear the holes and slices from the blows that killed them. Photo / Mike Yardley Back in town, we visited the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, another horrific reminder of the cruelty humans are capable of inflicting. Once a neighbourhood high school, the building was seized by Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge and turned into a prison and interrogation centre, the dreaded S-21. During the prison's four years of operation, an estimated 20,000 Cambodians were tortured here before being transferred to the Killing Fields for execution. Initially it was the previous governments officials, academics, doctors, teachers, students, factory workers, monks and engineers that were imprisoned. The regime was paranoid about educated Cambodians becoming CIA spies and went to outrageous lengths to interrogate inmates and force out confessions – many of which were false confessions. Prisoners were routinely beaten and tortured with electric shocks, searing hot metal instruments and hanging. Some were cut with knives or suffocated with plastic bags. Other methods for generating confessions included pulling out fingernails while pouring alcohol on the wounds and waterboarding prisoners. Even a Kiwi, Kerry Hamill, was tortured in the prison, before being executed. He was imprisoned along with his friends after sailing off the coast from Thailand and inadvertently straying into Cambodian territorial waters. The four school buildings that made up S-21 have been left largely as they were when the Khmer Rouge left. The prison kept extensive records and photos of the victims, and many of the documents are on display; particularly chilling are the representations of torture scenes painted by S-21 survivor Vann Nath. He is just one of a handful inmates who walked out of the prison alive. His painting skills were his saving grace. Another survivor is Chum Mey. His life was only spared because of his ability to repair sewing machines for Pol Pot's soldiers. The 93 year old has appeared in numerous documentaries and still greets visitors most days in the museum courtyard. S21 Prison in Phnom Penh. Photo / Mike Yardley For a welcome change of scenery, we also headed to the bejewelled splendour Royal Palace, the official residence of current King Sihamoni. The residential areas of the palace re strictly off limits, but within the pagoda-style compound are several structures worth savouring, including the Silver Pagoda; the Throne Hall, with a tiered roof topped by a 200-foot-tall tower; and a pavilion donated by the Emperor Napoléon III and shipped here from France. Photo / Supplied The Temple of the Emerald Buddha, built from 1892 to 1902 and renovated in 1962, is one of Phnom Penh's greatest attractions. It's referred to as the Silver Pagoda because of the 5000 silver tiles—more than 5 tonne of pure silver—that make up the floor in the main temple hall. It's also home to the Emerald Buddha—some say it's carved from jade, while others maintain that it's Baccarat crystal. In front of the altar is a 90kg solid-gold Buddha studded with over 2000 diamonds. Serious bling! Just out of Phnom Penh, we also headed to Uodong, the former royal capital of Cambodia until it moved to Phnom Penh in 1886. It's home to the burial sites of numerous Khmer kings and the Oudong Monastery. It was fascinating to interact with some of the nuns who live here – many who lost their husbands during the insanity of Pol Pot's regime. Best of all, entering the grace and gorgeousness of the main temple, we received a traditional Buddhist blessing from a couple of resident monks. Photo / Mike Yardley Shop up a storm in Phnom Penh. Bartering is expected and part of the fun at markets - just watch your wallet doesn't go walkabout with a fleet-footed pickpocket. Colourful krama (checked headscarves), weird and wonderful fruit, gemstones, fried grasshoppers -- it's all under one enormous Art Deco roof at Central Market. Haggle for handwoven silk, silver animal trinkets and Buddha carvings in the Russian Market's warren of dark alleys, which takes its name from the Russian wives who would previously sweep into town for a buying binge. Street 240 and Street 178 are the city's chicest boulevards, dotted with fashion boutiques, art galleries and bookstores. Phnom Penh has a reputation for booming nightlife. Booming it is, but a large part of that is actually pretty seedy. As in Thailand, in some parts of town, child prostitution is rife. The main nightlife area, nicknamed The Strip is on Street 51, spills forth with young Khmer girls from the countryside, soliciting on the footpath, waiting for large old white men with fat wallets. I felt sick. For a classier, cleaner experience, head to the riverfront scene on Sisowath Quay, where the restaurants and bars party deep into the night – without the sleazy sex trade atmos. Down on the quay, enjoy sizzling city views, cool breezes, cook-your-own-meat Khmer barbeque and rooftop cocktails at FCC, the Foreign Correspondents Club, a city institution housed in a French colonial gem. It is currently undergoing a major refresh, but the history runs deep here. Photos on the wall date back to the Khmer Rouge invasion, as taken by war correspondents who used to hang out at FCC back in the day. Photo / Supplied You'll have a world of fun taking in the trippy night lights on a remork ride, as Phnom Penh spangles itself silly in splashy light displays. Good-cause dining is also big deal in town, whereby numerous restaurants are run by aid organisations to help fund their social programmes and train new recruits to the hospitality trade. One of the best is Friends, on St 13, which offers former street children a head-start in the restaurant business. Explore the wonders, horror and history of Vietnam and Cambodia on Emerald Harmony's 7 night Majestic Mekong river cruise. Your cruise includes 21 meals with complimentary wine, beer and soft drinks accompanying lunch and dinner on board. Episode 5: TOP SECRET Thrifting Tips. It's finally time to start shopping for your design project! At the start of this episode, we describe exactly why we believe in shopping secondhand as our first option to furnish a home. It's sustainable, the items are higher quality at a lower cost, and it's the best way to find unique pieces. Here are a few articles we reference that discuss the sustainability piece in general: ‘Fast Furniture' Is Cheap. And Americans Are Throwing It in the Trash. Your stuff is actually worse now. Here are tips from the four categories of secondhand stores that we highlight: Thrift stores/flea markets: *Location can really inform what you see on the shelves (urban, wealthier zip codes = designer items, better fashion, rural = homespun, handmade pieces like quilts and baskets etc). *Find out when they restock and go on the following day. *Always be on the lookout for off-season items (coats in the summer, etc). *Ask about savings programs and discount days; befriend employees for the best deals. *Keep an open mind! *Take multiple passes through store. *Haggle if an item is damaged or priced too high. *Avoid anything broken unless you're willing and ready to fix it. *Look for natural fabrics, high quality details (metal zippers, lining). *Search for stamps and markings that show authenticity and age. *Make sure you know the store's policies (especially its return policy). *If you like something, buy it. Don't pass it up because it won't still be there! Antique malls + consignment stores: *Look for the vibe of a booth (you can generally tell pretty quickly). *Don't be afraid to haggle because many of these items sit for a long time. *Look up and down (lighting and rugs). Facebook marketplace: *Put app on your phone for easiest local searching *Search every day and save anything you like to train the algorithm *Make an immediate offer and offer more or less depending on how its priced and how much you want it *Join local buy/sell/trade groups as well as Instagram subscription groups that share good listings amongst themselves (The Makerista, House Friends (a design club for design enthusiasts) *Find a buddy who loves design and is always hunting too. Estate sales: *Estatesales.net is the best site to find local sales. *Look at photos and descriptions ahead of time. If you see something you want, go early on the first day and beeline to the item. *If you're browsing or just looking for deals, go on the last day and offer less. Here are the 3 takeaways from this episode: 1) Be prepared: Dress for easy try-ons (leggings and a tank top) plus a cross body bag so your hands are free to shop. Pack hand sanitizer, a tape measure, and make sure you have your phone for photos and to Google items. 2. Educate yourself on the store: Consider location, store policies, whether you can haggle or not, the overall vibe and prices, which are the best days to go (generally early in the week). 3. Keep an open mind! You might pass up pieces that could really work for you. And don't get too discouraged that you give up. Thrifting is a game of frequency and having fun, even when you don't score big.
