Maybe you've been there, too. There's a sponsorship, sometimes a fairly high-profile sponsorship, and I have gotten asked to write it about it in an ad or email…but, there wasn't really a strategy. That is not the way to get the best ROI, the most juice for the squeeze.Sponsorships truly succeed when they tie into the value proposition of the brand.

There's not too many things they agree on, but one of them is that they need to restrict the economic growth, development, and technological development of the Chinese economy.”The Trump administration has been more aggressive with tariffs, but the Biden-Harris administration has not rolled back these tariffs. The potential impact of the U.S. elections on global trade partners like Canada and Europe is far-reaching, depending on who takes the presidency.[09:44] Tariffs, Deregulation, and TaxesTariffs decrease growth and more inflation, which are negative for equities. They lead to higher interest rates than would have occurred without the increase in tariffs. There are significant differences in deregulation policies between Trump and Harris, with Trump supporting deregulation in sectors like energy and finance.[15:10] Michael: “The overall impact of all of these competing policies is likely to be relatively small, and to some extent it depends on the sequencing of the policy as to what the outcome for growth, for inflation, for equities, for rates, what that looks like through time.”The economic impact of their policies varies. Deregulation is generally positive for growth; regulation has more nuance behind it.Michael explains that a Trump administration would renew all tax cuts and possibly implement additional fiscal stimulus.Conversely, Harris seems committed to renewing tax cuts for those earning less than $400,000 and introducing tax increases for the wealthy.[19:37] Key Takeaways for Investors[20:39] Michael: “The best course of action is to look through that uncertainty, figure out long term investment goals and stay focused on those and stay invested again.”Michael advises staying invested and focusing on long-term goals, emphasizing that long-term investment goals should guide decision-making.Other factors like economic growth, inflation, and central bank policy have a greater long-term impact on portfolio performance.Michael encourages investors to stay invested and focused on their long-term goals despite the market uncertainty.About MichaelMichael Sager is the Managing Director and Head of Multi-Asset and Currency Management at CIBC Asset Management.  He is an experienced financial expert with a rich background in portfolio management and economic research from prestigious institutions like Wellington Management, JP Morgan Asset Management, the European Central Bank, and the Bank of England. Brij Khurana, fixed income portfolio manager at Wellington Management, says that if either political party sweeps the election in November -- winning the presidency and control of Congress and the Senate -- the result will be higher bond yields, because the market will price in greater financing of deficits, but he notes that a divided government, the market will price in a bigger fiscal contraction regardless of who the president is, bringing yields down. Khurana says the Federal Reserve should already have been cutting interest rates but will start next month, although he is expecting a slow, methodical cutting process rather than knee-jerk cuts in response to any data changes. On the stock side of the investment world, Matt Harris, chief investment officer at The Hausberg Group says that the volatility that surfaced early in August hasn't given him any reason to distrust the trend, which remains intact on a long-term basis and which he does not think will be broken despite heightened volatility between now and election day. Household debt is a good investment as the US economy remains strong, Jeremy Forster, portfolio manager at Wellington Management, says in the latest Credit Edge podcast from Bloomberg Intelligence. “We do still think that the US consumer is in really good shape,” he tells Bloomberg News' James Crombie and Bloomberg Intelligence Senior Credit Analyst Arnold Kakuda. Forster expects “compelling” returns in fixed income for 2024, which he thinks will be the year of the bond. In addition, Wellington likes financial sector and electric utility debt. Forster and Kakuda also debate liability-driven investing and risk in the banking sector as interest rates stay high. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Paul Braverman was a cultural force behind the growth and success of Wellington Management which currently has over $1.3 trillion under management.  Since retiring in 2007, he has served on over 17 boards of directors, including boards of public and private companies and nonprofit organizations. In this episode we discuss the most important drivers of board success. We love our listeners! Drop us a line or give us guest suggestions here.   Big Ideas/Thoughts/Quotes: “I think the culture of Wellington is its most sustainable competitive advantage. It always has been, and the culture is basically the name of the book (I wrote) entitled: Client, Firm, Self: The History and Culture of Wellington Management Company. We believed that we existed for the benefit of our clients and that they always came first, and then the firm, and then the individual.” What was there that allowed Wellington to sustain that very, very, very strong culture for so long? What we all observed how devoted the founders were to each other, how they watched over each other, took care of each other, helped each other's families. If there were problems, we watched when one of the partners passed away how well they looked after his spouse, things like that - -  we learned by observing them. I said in my final speech when I left the firm, I learned more about life at Wellington than I did about the investment business just by watching the character of these people and how they conducted their lives and treated other people. How does a board help maintain the culture of the company for which it serves? The board, I believe, sets a tone at the top, and it is a tone that we exist for the benefit of our clients or our customers. We are accountable to the shareholders. We need to take care of our employees. We need to take care of the cities and the locales that we do business in to help wherever we need to help philanthropically, and to set that tone for the rest of the company. It's not just always business and always profits. You're not going to believe this, but I never had a budget all the years that I was there. Reputational Risk: with a company like Wellington Management, which works so hard to create the culture and to create the reputation of the company – it often becomes one of, if not the, most valuable asset of a company. It's one of the most important responsibilities that a board has. The amazing thing about it, Joe, is as hard as we worked on it, as strong as it was, it's still fragile. It's always fragile. It can just be one incident.  Board of One My worry is that a specialist who doesn't have the broad experience, when we finally get to the point when we have to decide about a cybersecurity attack or something, I don't want the decision to be in a vacuum by one person. Role of a Board chair I have chaired a few boards, I chair one now, and what I say to the other board members is, "Before we start, I just want you to know one thing. I work for you, you don't work for me, so I'm here serving you." I think that helps a lot. I'm very transparent. I reach out to them all the time seeking a wider audience. I set the agenda with the CEO, and I meet with the CEO once a quarter privately to make sure to see how the company's doing.  I try to keep myself out of the board meeting as much as possible, other than to make sure everybody stays on track as far as time and that we cover the key points.   Board Chair and the CEO. If they aren't working well together to make sure that the board is being effective, what does a board member do? To the extent that you don't like something that's going on, you have to go to your chair because at some point, you're violating either the prudent man rule or your fiduciary responsibility. We're fiduciaries so you're going to have to report it and you're going to have to do something about it. Either something has to change, or you have to change in terms of moving on.

In 2023, two major insurers joined a growing list of companies that will no longer offer new home insurance policies in California. In Florida, the situation is worse, with more than a dozen large home insurance companies retreating from the state. Both states have seen devastating property losses due to extreme forest fires and hurricanes - risks that are only increasing due to the changing climate. But why can't the insurance companies simply adjust premiums to reflect the changing risk that climate change is bringing, rather than leaving a market entirely? Because like many economic models, insurance risk is assessed based on historical data (in some cases, by law), which is not particularly reflective of future (or even present) risk. Dr. Spencer Glendon, Founder of Probable Futures and former Head of Research at the investment firm Wellington Management, returns to Climate Now to examine how much our historical experiences can be used to inform how we should respond to our rapidly changing world, and how the roles of quantitative data, empirical analysis, and storytelling may need to shift for us to make the most of our collective wisdom in preparing for challenges of the future.Follow us on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram.Contact us at contact@climatenow.comVisit our website for all of our content and sources for each episode.

And under current conditions, Khurana says he is frequently asked why to go with bonds when cash can generate nice returns in bank certificates of deposit, to which he notes that bond prices are cheap right now, making this an ideal time to consider lengthening maturities as the Fed is looking at moving to the next phase of the rate cycle. Sonali Patel Wilson is Managing Director and Director of Alternatives, Americas at Wellington Management where she is based in the New York City area. She sits on the investment committee of the Harry and Jeanette Foundation in Baltimore and she is the trustee of EWAAB Encouraging Women across All Borders, which helps college aged women and non-binary individuals build their confidence to enter STEM and finance fields. She previously held various positions at PIMCO focused on account management in the alternatives area and has held various investor relations and analyst roles. Our conversation traces Sonali's roots and the path her parents took as immigrants from India as well as the entrepreneurship and sacrifice that served as the backdrop to her childhood. The entrepreneurship journey took them from lobby convenience store stands to real estate and the focus was on studying and academic achievement and, always, hard work. We move then to her journey into investment and finance and how she found her voice and style in developing a network and some of the surprising turns that that journey took. This discussion infuses Sonali's personal and professional lives, in which she followed a tradition of "breaking with tradition" in her own choice of life partner, and this has given her a new appreciation for diversity and inclusion. Sonali has numerous interests that are close to her heart and many of them relate to STEM and finance and getting those areas more diverse. In particular her work with EWAAB (Encouraging Women across All Borders) is impactful in this respect and we discuss what drives her to do more in this area.
