The world lost pioneering Down syndrome advocate Carl Erskine on April 16, 2024, at the age of 97. Carl and his wife Betty, were involved deeply with the Special Olympics and charities which aimed at helping people with developmental disabilities such as his son Jimmy. Carl Erskine was a MLB All-Star, World Series Champion, ally of Jackie Robinson and the last surviving member of the “Boys of Summer” Brooklyn teams of the 1950's. To honor Carl's life, we revisit our episode with documentarian Ted Green discussing his film 'The Best We've Got: The Carl Erskine Story'. As Ted says in this conversation, Carl and Betty are the perfect embodiment of what is on Jackie Robinson's tombstone. “A life is not important except for the impact it has on other lives“. In this episode, we are joined by excellent Ted Green our only returning guest of the series who has just authored a new book, Treetime. The book explores Teds lifelong adventure with trees and tree folk. Since earliest childhood, and with Windsor Great Park as his playground, Ted has been asking questions about nature and our environment. Treetime is a collection of tales from over 80 years spent observing, questioning and caring for the natural world and all its wildlife, especially fungi, trees and birds. Ted is one of the most influential tree experts I have ever met, and his influence extends far beyond I think even he realises sometimes. This book is so important for anyone interested in the environmental world, especially those with an interest in trees, landscapes, ecology, carbon, soils, fungi, farming, conservation and so many other areas too. One very interesting thing with this book is its written the same way that Ted talks, which means you are constantly taken on stories and journeys throughout the book, but also his thoughts in interesting studies and research ideas, or theories on various matters. Giving the book a really rich value in helping guide future Phd studies and inform us of areas we need to know much more about. I cannot recommend the book enough and its really a vital learning tool for anyone interested in the environment. All proceeds also go to support the Arboricultural Association and you can find the book on their website here: https://www.trees.org.uk/Book-Shop/Products/Treetime-Ted-Green Guest: Ted Green https://www.alismty.com/ Be sure to check out the podcast on all usual podcast platforms, and on social media. Ted Green is a documentarian whose latest film, ‘The Best We've Got: The Carl Erskine Story', will be airing on PBS SoCal July 4th. Ted's film is an in-depth look at Carl Erskine, a Dodgers pitcher whose son Jimmie was born with Down syndrome 63 years ago, a time in our country's history when segregation plagued humanity. Carl and Betty, when faced with the inevitable institutionalization of their son, which was the option that was customarily given by the medical community to protect the integrity of their family unit, made the choice to take their child home and raise him. A decision for the time that took great courage, taking some of the first steps to change the narrative of Down syndrome. Ted Green further discusses his Christopher Award-winning documentary “The Best We've Got: The Carl Erskine Story,” the former Brooklyn Dodgers' star's decision to raise his son with Down syndrome at a time when children with special needs were often institutionalized – and how that decision continues to have positive effects for children with special needs today.
Filmmaker Ted Green discusses his Christopher Award-winning documentary “The Best We've Got: The Carl Erskine Story” about former Brooklyn Dodgers' star Carl Erskine, a humble man of faith whose actions led to greater racial equality in baseball and wider inclusion of children with special needs in our society.
Ted Green is a director, producer, and writer who fell in love with the art of storytelling through film and has made several documentaries, many of them about sports, but also focusing on people and events that celebrate the triumph of the human spirit. His newest film, "The Best We've Got: The Carl Erskine Story," is about Carl Erskine, a baseball player who played a seminal role in two of the great human-rights movements of the past century, first as a teammate and close friend of Jackie Robinson, then as a pioneer in the fight for people with special needs. Carl Erskine and his wife Betty gave birth to their son Jimmy and discovered he had Down syndrome. Instead of institutionalizing him, they found themselves at the forefront of another fight for the recognition of the marginalized. Erskine went on to play a pivotal role in the development of the Special Olympics. https://youtu.be/_Kc7SVByMD0 Ted Green also talks about the Erskine Personal Impact Curriculum, which is designed to teach themes of inclusion, diversity, and acceptance using the stories of Carl and other individuals featured in the film. The curriculum has been distributed to schools in Indiana and beyond, with more than 70,000 books distributed so far. The goal is to inspire the next generation to positively impact the world. **Who You will Hear**Guest: Scott Hoffman (CEO of International Literary Properties)Co-host: Luna Tang (Cloud Service Delivery Manager at Klopotek)Co-host: Dwayne Parris (Senior Consultant at Klopotek) Purchasing rights of music works as a means of investment – as Michael Jackson did to the majority of the Beatles' catalog, is not a novel concept in the music publishing industry, yet in the book publishing world where people are reluctant to part with their copyrights, this concept still remains fresh and rarely-touched. Scott Hoffman and his team at ILP (International Literary Properties) not only think about it, but they also act on it. He tells us in the conversation how ILP was founded, how it works in partnership with various parties (publishers, authors, and literary agents), and how it has established its position in the value-added chain. With extensive real cases, he explains to us the ways that ILP makes long-term investments in literary estates (especially on backlists) and how they maximize the value of these time-honored works, as well as how these practices make ILP a meaningful complement to the value-added chain in rights management. For more information about ILP, the authors, and the great works it represents, please visit internationalliteraryproperties.com. In this week's first segment (2:54 to 13:57), hosts Brent Butterworth and Dennis Burger opine about a new report from Strata-gee.com about consumer trends in difficult economic times, and speculate about what all of this may mean for hi-fi, especially given how luxury-focused our hobby has become. Next up (14:27 to 28:28) they springboard off an article about the 60th anniversary of Stereophile to discuss how that publication changed the way we read and write about audio, how the industry has changed since the magazine launched, as well as how much it has changed since John Atkinson became editor in the late 1980s. Finally (29:09 to 47:43), they dig into SoundStage! Hi-Fi's coverage of the 2022-2023 EISA Awards. What are these awards, how are they selected, who votes on them, and which of the awards resonates most with Brent and Dennis? Later became the GM of the Rangers. * Boston Bruins- Wayne Cashman- Tall and rangy Power forward who played on Phil Esposito's left wing giving Espo the time and space to become one of the greatest goal scorers in NHL history. Cashman was also a feared fighter could score goals as well- Cashman later became an assistant coach for the Rangers. This week, Ted Green joins us from Metuchen, NJ, where he is president of the The Stratecon Group, a strategic marketing company for the consumer electronics industry. Ted's career spans more than 30 years, all in the CE business. His work has taken him from mass merchant & specialty retailing…to manufacturing, distribution, and... now strategic marketing and journalism. He may be best known for his influential and sometimes controversial Stata-GEE newsletter, which gained a ton of new subscribers, recently, thanks to his reporting on the challenges facing CEDIA Expo planners as the Covid-19 Delta Variant led to a mass exodus of exhibitors just weeks before that show. I consider Ted a good friend and I appreciate how he ruffles feathers in the industry, just as long as I'm not the subject of any of his stories. It's another edition of Midday Culture Connections, with Dr. Sheri Parks. Today we’re asking the question: what is courage? From sacred texts to screenplays to the daily news, our culture is filled with references to courage as an element of character that makes a person worthy of respect. We see courage in the physical bravery of soldiers and first responders. But courage is also the moral strength to do what’s right, when doing so can be hard, or dangerous.Today, we’ll look for examples of courage in the Central American migrants now suffering at the southern US border…in political leaders who’ve put principle above party…and in victims who’ve found the strength to forgive great wrongs. And we’ll ask: what does courage mean to you?Midday’s senior producer Rob Sivak, sitting in for Tom Hall, is joined today, as we are each month on this series, by Dr. Sheri Parks, Vice President of Strategic Initiatives at the Maryland Institute College of Art, and author of Fierce Angels: Living with a Legacy from the Sacred Dark Feminine to the Strong Black Woman. Also with us in the studio is Dr. Ana Patricia Rodriguez. She is an associate professor of U.S-Latino and Central American Literature at the University of Maryland College Park. Dr. Rodriguez left El Salvador as a child when her family emigrated to the United States. She has been closely involved with the immigrant community through her volunteer work as a Spanish interpreter for asylum-seeking migrants, and her work with the children of undocumented immigrant families here in Maryland. This conversation was livestreamed on WYPR’s Facebook page, and you can watch the video here. The audio clip of Eva Kor in today's program was taken from a longer 2015 Google Talk conversation with Eva Kor and Ted Green, director of the documentary ----Eva,---- and moderated by Mike Abrams.
Hello dear listeners! I hope you like the new name and look of the podcast. We are now on Instagram at: @peaceonfourstrings I'm delighted to share my first solo ukulele track with you-- my original arrangement of "Kumbaya." I love this song for its simplicity; there's something therapeutic about the repeating melody. I had the chance to sing and play this song with my family last week as we celebrated the life of my uncle, Ted Green. This recording is dedicated to Ted's memory and to my wonderful extended family. I hope the music brings healing energy to your day, too. Arranged and performed by: Jessica Sammis, ukulele (AND special thanks to my husband Charlie Nilles for recording this podcast!)
In Episode 058 of the Pathway to Promise Podcast Dr. Brad Miller has a fascinating conversation with documentary filmmaker Ted Green of TedGreenfilms.com. Ted Green is an award-winning filmmaker whose has created films which share stories of the triumph of the human spirit profiling people like Championship basketball coach John Wooden, Military Veterans and Eva Kor who survived terrible medical experiments as a twin by Dr Josef Mengele at the Auschwitz Concentration camp. It was Ted’s latest film about Eva which was the primary topic of this interview. Ted tells Brad about what he looks for in a great story to tell on film. This includes the tension in the life of the subject which includes overcoming adversity experiencing a beautiful story arch with speaks to the hears of people. He goes on to share how important it is that the subject leaves an indelible impression on the people they influence in their life. Such was certainly the case in the story of Eva Kor the focus of Teds film “Eva:” Eva Kor and her twin sister were separated from her mother at age 10 at the Auschwitz death camp and subject to unthinkable medical experiments by the “Angel of Death” Dr. Josef Mengele. Of 3000 twins experimented on Eva and her sister were among only 300 to survive the war. Ted Green tells Eva’s story of survival of the death camp and then her incredible courage and perseverance to tell the story of the Josef Mengele twins and simultaneously led a worldwide manhunt for the doctor who authored such pain and death. The most memorable part of the conversation about Eva was her decision to forgive Dr. Josef Mengele and the Nazi’s in 1995 which led to backlash and persecution in the aftermath of her decision to forgive. it was the choice to finish with forgiveness which led to a life transformation for Eva which she shares with Ted Green in the film and which she teaches now to a generation of school children through an educational program based on the movie. This is truly a story of life transformation through telling the story of forgiveness through Ted Greens film and in this fascination conversation he has with Dr. Brad Miller on this Episode 058 of the Pathway to Promise Podcast. The mission of the Pathway to Promise Podcast is to help people overcome adversity and discover their promised life of peace, prosperity, and purpose. Dr. Brad Miller June 2019 (#) Brad Miller 1:17 My privilege today to have with us Ted green of Ted green films, who is a filmmaker of some really, really awesome films that have showed the human spirit in some really neat ways, shows how people have overcome great adversity will go, in one particular case about a woman who was in a Nazi concentration camp, and we'll talk about her in just a minute. But, Ted, welcome to the pathway to promise. Ted Green 1:42 Thanks, Brad. I really appreciate it. Thank you very much. Brad Miller 1:45 Awesome. Well, you're a great storyteller, and I enjoy your work. But you started off your storytelling in the newspaper business and somehow navigated to film but tell us a little bit about your story about how you got to where you're at today. Ted Green 1:57 Sure. And actually, I'll start by saying that I still can consider myself a journalist, rather than a filmmaker, I'm just operating in a different medium now. But after college, and then I went to grad school in Chicago for journalism. And then I, I was going to be nothing but a sports writer, nothing else. That's all I was going to be. And then I was sitting at home for maybe six months, striking out and every job opportunity and one popped up in a tiny little town in Florida, where I was going to be a news copy editor. And I was going to have no part of that. But my parents said, you're out the door, you're taking it and I said, Okay, I packed up my, my three fish into the U haul. And then I ultimately did end up on the sports side of...

The life of an ABA player is discussed in the third episode of the Over and Back Classic NBA podcast’s summer series — Basketball Mysteries of the 1970s. Jason Mann is joined by Indiana Pacers great Bob Netolicky, who played all 9 seasons in the ABA, and Ted Green, who has produced documentaries on Pacers legend Roger Brown and coach Slick Leonard. Discussion topics include: How the ABA forced innovations into the pro basketball world, including bigger salaries and a wide-open style of play; on- and off-court highlights of the Pacers from 1969 through 1975, where they won three ABA championships and appeared in five Finals; the excellence of Roger Brown and how he’s been forgotten among the great small forwards of all-time; tales from Netolicky’s club in Indianapolis, including sneaking in an underaged Spencer Haywood and giving visiting players free beer the night before games; Slick Leonard’s legendary motivational tactics, including nearly attacking Neto with a hockey stock; how it felt to win a championship in 1970 after blowing it in 1969; why Netolicky was never tempted by the NBA; whether the ABA ever felt stable; and how the former ABA players have forged a deep brotherhood all these years later. Netolicky and Green are both part of the Dropping Dimes Foundation, which helps former ABA players who are dealing with financial distress.
