Daniel Monks: Acting and Activism in London Theatre

After arriving onto the London theatre scene. Daniel Monks has established himself as one of the most exciting actors around. He is now currently back at the Donmar Warehouse in Benedict Andrews' adaptation of The Cherry Orchard. He was last seen on stage in Jamie Lloyd's acclaimed production of The Seagull where he played the iconic role of Konstantin opposite Emilia Clarke and Indira Varma. Now as Pyotr Trofimov, he is once again demonstrating his prowess as an actor to audiences, and it is likely we'll see more spellbinding performances from him in the future. In this brand new interview with Daniel Monks, he talks to us about his London theatre career, looking back on highlights like The Normal Heart and The Seagull. He talks fondly of his time coming to London from Perth, Australia and the journey he has made from writing and directing to coming back to acting.  In our interview, Daniel also talks candidly about the ongoing struggles disable actors in the industry face, commenting specifically on the recent controversy around Shakespeare's Globe's casting of Michelle Terry in the role of Richard III. Still, he is encouraged by the progress made in London with actors like Lizzie Annis and Francesca Mills also delivering strong impacts on the industry. We also talk about the trailblazing directors he's worked with like Benedict Andrews and Jamie Lloyd who Daniel praises for having such courage to reimagine classic works. He also praises outgoing artistic director Michael Longhurst for his vision and openness to reimagining Richard III as Teenage Dick, bringing his talent to the consciousness of London audiences. It's a fascinating discussion and we look forward to seeing what else he does next in the future.

Daniel Monks is an award winning theatre and film actor who hails from Perth, Western Australia. He received an AACTA nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role for the feature film Pulse, a story about a disabled teen who undergoes radical surgery to turn into a beautiful woman in a bid to be loved and embraced. Daniel wrote the script and worked with his close friend, Stevie Cruz-Martin, as a director. It's a film that helped launch his career as an actor in both Australia and London, where he has performed opposite Emilia Clarke in The Seagull, and where he won the Best Performer in a Play award at The Stage Debut Awards for his turn in Teenage Dick, Michael Lew's darkly comedic retelling of Richard III.When I first watched Pulse, I saw an actor who brought a complicated and conflicted character to life on screen with deep empathy and understanding. We open the discussion by talking about the origins of Pulse, leading Daniel to reflect on the almost ten-year journey between that film being shot and now. In that decade-long career path, Daniel has also starred in Australian films like Sissy, and Timothy Despina Marshall's new film, In the Room Where He Waits. His place in the world of theatre and film as a gay, disabled actor has seen him become a leader in his field, forging a path for his fellow queer and disabled actors. We talk about the weight of responsibility that often comes with the role of being a leader, while also touching on the push for diversity on stage and on screen, and how Daniel navigates that when it's often driven by non-disabled, cisgender, straight, white people. As you'll hear in the following interview, Daniel is a 'bucket list' interview guest I've been eager to talk with for years. I was fortunate to chat with Daniel's mum, Annie Murtagh-Monks, a few years ago about her work as a casting director, so it was quite wonderful to hear about the conversations that she has with Daniel about their work. Daniel also talks about the support that filmmakers like Stevie Cruz-Martin and Hannah Barlow have given him throughout his career.I recorded this ahead of the world premier of In the Room Where He Waits at the QueerScreen Mardi Gras Film Festival, where it received Queer Screen Completion Funding. This stunning drama sees Daniel play the role of Tobin, an actor who slips back home to Australia for his father's funeral. As he waits out his two week quarantine period, he is haunted by the presence of the previous tenant in the room. This riveting film sees Daniel command the screen in a way that will have you leaning on the edge of your seat - not because of how tense the film is, but simply because of how compelling Daniel is to watch. The film will no doubt screen down the line at other festivals, so please keep an eye out for it.This is a long, deep dive discussion which I'm proud to be able to share with you all. Make sure to seek out Pulse, Sissy, In the Room Where He Waits, and visit National Theatre At Home to view The Seagull.Thank you for listening to this episode of The Curb podcast. Zurin Villanueva talks "Murder Mystery 2", playing Tina Turner in "Tina: The Tina Turner Musical", and the time she auditioned in front of Lin Manuel Miranda! About Zurin: On Broadway, television, and film Zurin Villanueva has been performing professionally from the age of 15. Her first professional role was reenacting the narratives of enslaved children for Nickelodeon's program Nick News. At 16, she won Amatuer Night at the Apollo with her tap group, Loud and Clear. She trained in ballet, jazz, tap and modern in New York City but most notably at the Dance Theatre of Harlem. At 17, she was awarded the American Theatre Wing scholarship for most promising students at LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts as a Drama Major.  Zurin debuted on the professional stage at Arena Stage prior to graduating from the now Chadwick Boseman School Of Fine Arts at Howard University earning a BFA in Musical Theatre. Zurin made her Broadway debut amongst the living legends, Audra McDonald, Billy Porter, Brian Stokes Mitchell, choreographer Savion Glover and director George C. Wolfe in Shuffle Along.  Zurin's most cherished roles were Charlayne in Ain't Misbehavin', hand picked and directed by Andre DeShields. Whom recently received a Tony and Emmy for his role in the original Broadway Cast. Then went on to star as Josephine Baker in a new self-titled musical, directed and choreographed Maurice Hines, "the" rap dance icon of Hines, Hines and Dad. Since going to Broadway Zurin has continued non-stop. She performed as an original cast member in Mean Girls, The Musical, becoming the first Black Plastic "#blastic" when she debuted as Gretchen Wieners. In her New York principal debut Zurin starred as Dionne Davenport in Clueless The Musical opposite Dove Cameron. Ben Brantley of the New York Times deemed her performance “appealing”. Pre pandemic Zurin recently played Nala and Shenzi in The Lion King on Broadway. She also starred in Teenage Dick, a high school adaptation of Richard the Third at Pasadena Playhouse as Lady Anne. The LA Times called her portrayal “searingly honest”. Although Zurin has many talents she will always be an actor first. She is also a writer, having written poems since she was a child. Zurin is currently working on her first feature film. Last but never least she has started a coaching business built to teach actors new to Broadway how to successfully navigate the business without burn out. Luke Sheppard and Jenn Weber are two creative geniuses currently teaming up for the smash hit, "& Juliet", as the show's director and choreographer, respectively. The two discuss the instant connection they had and where the concept for the show originated. While making "& Juliet" was originally a stretch for him, Luke recalls how it was also the most satisfying and fun he's ever had directing a show. The two recall how their journeys with "& Juliet" began, and how the workshops helped in getting the story and tone right. For Jenn the most exciting part is collaborating with the director and writer. The two take pride in the show's culture where there's room for support and honesty for each other. While Jenn and Luke's stories on how they got into theatre differ, the two share a common approach when it comes to pursuing their dreams: not taking no for an answer—a true testament that rejection doesn't mean failure and that you don't have to follow the traditional path that most people take to get to where you want to be. Luke Sheppard is a British theatre director known for his work in the West End and on Broadway. He studied at the University of Warwick before going on to train at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). Sheppard's directing credits include the West End productions of "In the Heights," "The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13¾," and "The Comedy About a Bank Robbery." He also directed the Broadway production of "& Juliet," which opened in 2019. Sheppard has won several awards for his work, including the Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival for "In the Heights" in 2016.  Jenn Weber is a choreographer and director who's also a double Tony Award nominee for the 2022-2023 Broadway season with nominations for Best Choreography for her Broadway debuts of “& Juliet” and “KPOP”. She made her West End debut as the choreographer of “& Juliet” and collaborated with Disney+ as an Executive Producer and Choreographer for a new film version of “The Hip Hop Nutcracker”. Her Off-Broadway choreography credits include “KPOP”, “Teenage Dick”, “Cruel Intentions”, and “Stockholm”. UNCSA alumnus Gregg Mozgala, after years of performing on some of Off-Broadway's finest stages, is enjoying a well-earned banner year. He recently completed a national tour playing the title character in “Teenage Dick,” a modern take on Shakespeare's “Richard III” centered on the experience of a high school student with cerebral palsy, and this summer he appeared in “Richard III” itself, alongside film and theater star Danai Gurira, in the Public Theater's revered Shakespeare in the Park season. This fall he will cap off the year with his Broadway debut in Martyna Majok's Pulitzer Prize-winning “The Cost of Living,” reprising the leading role he performed in the play's premiere at Manhattan Theatre Club in 2018.Gregg can credit that success not only to his acting but also his producing skills. In 2012, determined to make disability and people with disabilities more visible on the nation's stages, he founded The Apothetae, a New York-based theater company dedicated to the production of works that explore and illuminate the disabled experience. The Apothetae has developed several new plays and adaptations from and with both established and up-and-coming artists — disabled and non-disabled, Deaf and hearing — and it is through The Apothetae's commissioning program that playwright Mike Lew completed “Teenage Dick.”In this interview with Pier Carlo Talenti, Gregg describes how an understanding of his cultural lineage as a disabled performer led him to create a company that celebrates displaying disabled bodies and their stories with unassailable authenticity.http://www.greggmozgala.com/http://www.theapothetae.org/

Teenage Dick, Written by Mike Lew, was commissioned and developed by Gregg Mozgala's own theater company, The Apothetae, which is dedicated to productions that illuminate the disabled experience. “Exhilarating. It suggests how much richer the theater will be when it is truly open to artists of all kinds. Not just because those artists deserve employment but also because the canon of classics deserves reimagining to match our world.” Lew says, “We set out to re-examine disability politics from Shakespearean times to our time, through a dark comedy that mashes up Shakespeare-talk and Tik Tok.” Join us as we sit down with Mike and talk all things Teenage Dick.

Jonas Eklöf, Editor in Chief of Swedish literary magazine Vi Läser, reports on the presentation ceremony in Stockholm today. Traces is a forensic crime thriller set in Dundee based on an idea by Val McDermid and written by Amelia Bullmore. Molly Windsor (who starred in Three Girls) heads the cast as a technician in a forensic laboratory who is still coming to terms with a traumatic event in her past. Critic Stephanie Merritt reviews the six-part UKTV drama series. Mike Lew’s darkly comic take on Shakespeare’s Richard III - “Teenage Dick” - has its UK debut at the Donmar Warehouse in London. Samira talks to Michael Longhurst about his vision for the theatre after becoming Artistic Director earlier this year and to actor Daniel Monks about playing this canonical disabled character.
