This week, Tommy is joined by actress Lacey Chabert who became an icon in pop culture history by playing Gretchen Wieners in Tina Fey's beloved movie, Mean Girls. Since then, she has accumulated countless credits to her name, including starring in over three dozen Hallmark movies. But now she is spreading the holiday cheer by joining Hot Frosty on Netflix, which hit #1 on the charts within 24 hours of its debut. Today, Lacey opens up about why she wanted to join this whimsical Christmas movie, that Lindsay Lohan cameo that lit the internet on fire, what it was like working as an actor at just 7 years old, growing up in front of the public eye, what reuniting last year with some of her Mean Girls cast meant to her, if she is down to do a Mean Girls Christmas movie, the family she formed while working on Party of Five, how even when life isn't easy she tries to find the joy, what her relationship is like with grief, why its important to allow yourself to feel sad in those moments, if she wants to return back to the Broadway stage one day, and so much more. Mean Girls is a 2004 Teen Romantic Comedy directed by Mark Waters, Mark Waters also directed Just Like Heaven, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, Freaky Friday. This movie is also written by Tina Fey and produced by Lorne Michaels. Mean Girls is the story of Cady Heron played by Lindsay Lohan. Cady was homeschooled and lived in Africa for 12 years and she is finally going to highschool for the first time… she has no idea what she is in for. Cady quickly meets the school rejects Janis Ian played by Lizzy Caplan and Damian played by Daniel Franzese. She also meets the ‘plastics' or the MEAN GIRLS, Regina George, Karen Smith and Gretchen Wieners, played by Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried and Lacey Chabert respectively. Really this movie is just the story of Cady navigating through having no experience with North American highschool and being THRUST into a friendship with Regina George… and all the comedy that comes with that. Also, Jonathan Bennett plays our love interest Aaron Samuels.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Zurin Villanueva talks "Murder Mystery 2", playing Tina Turner in "Tina: The Tina Turner Musical", and the time she auditioned in front of Lin Manuel Miranda! About Zurin: On Broadway, television, and film Zurin Villanueva has been performing professionally from the age of 15. Her first professional role was reenacting the narratives of enslaved children for Nickelodeon's program Nick News. At 16, she won Amatuer Night at the Apollo with her tap group, Loud and Clear. She trained in ballet, jazz, tap and modern in New York City but most notably at the Dance Theatre of Harlem. At 17, she was awarded the American Theatre Wing scholarship for most promising students at LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts as a Drama Major. Zurin debuted on the professional stage at Arena Stage prior to graduating from the now Chadwick Boseman School Of Fine Arts at Howard University earning a BFA in Musical Theatre. Zurin made her Broadway debut amongst the living legends, Audra McDonald, Billy Porter, Brian Stokes Mitchell, choreographer Savion Glover and director George C. Wolfe in Shuffle Along. Zurin's most cherished roles were Charlayne in Ain't Misbehavin', hand picked and directed by Andre DeShields. Whom recently received a Tony and Emmy for his role in the original Broadway Cast. Then went on to star as Josephine Baker in a new self-titled musical, directed and choreographed Maurice Hines, "the" rap dance icon of Hines, Hines and Dad. Since going to Broadway Zurin has continued non-stop. She performed as an original cast member in Mean Girls, The Musical, becoming the first Black Plastic "#blastic" when she debuted as Gretchen Wieners. In her New York principal debut Zurin starred as Dionne Davenport in Clueless The Musical opposite Dove Cameron. Ben Brantley of the New York Times deemed her performance “appealing”. Zurin's tv/film credits include Detroit where she played Martha of the Vandellas. She has guest starred in Insatiable on Netflix, and has a recurring role on Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Pre pandemic Zurin recently played Nala and Shenzi in The Lion King on Broadway. She also starred in Teenage Dick, a high school adaptation of Richard the Third at Pasadena Playhouse as Lady Anne. The LA Times called her portrayal “searingly honest”. Although Zurin has many talents she will always be an actor first. She is also a writer, having written poems since she was a child. Zurin is currently working on her first feature film. Last but never least she has started a coaching business built to teach actors new to Broadway how to successfully navigate the business without burn out. A native of Brooklyn, Zurin Villanueva calls NYC home when she is not working. Nesta is in a fight for her life as the nightmarish Kelpie drags her to the bottom of the Oorid. This scene is truly one of the most unsettling in the series so prepare yourself. As she struggles against the creature's hold, Nesta search for her power leads her to the Mask. And once she puts that on, it is game over for everyone, especially her attacker. Zach Fortais-Gomm and Liz Campbell from Realms of Peril and Glory (actual play podcast) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Liz's choice Mean Girls. Mean Girls is a 2004 teen comedy written by Tina Fey and directed by Mark (Freaky Friday) Waters. It stars Lindsay Lohan as newcomer Cady, a superb Rachel McAdams as Regina George the rich popular leader of The Plastics, Lacey Chabert as Gretchen Wieners and Amanda Seyfried, in her breakout role as Karen Smith, the sweet but dumb member of The Plastics. Cady arrives at High School having been homeschooled previously in “Africa” and befriends two outsiders Janis and Damien who convince her to befriend Regina and The Plastics to take revenge. Even if you haven't seen Mean Girls you will have seen the numerous GIFs and memes (93 and counting) it has spawned - ever worn pink on a Wednesday?!? It has quite possibly become the defining teen film in popular culture. Despite some aspects having aged like (according to Zach) milk - the casual racism and sexual relationships - questionable whether underage grooming by male teachers was funny even in 2004 but Mean Girls is top tier teen film. [supsystic-tables id=245] Recommedability scores for Mean Girls were high - with fives from Liz, Zach and Helen and strong scoring across the remaining categories gives a very high overall rating of 4.28. "Fetch" is happening in The Batter's Box, as Krystina Alabado joins us for Episode 80! Alabado starred as Gretchen Wieners in Mean Girls on Broadway from March 2019 until the show's final performance in March 2020, and has authored a phenomenal stage career that now spans more than a decade. Her other credits include the touring production of Spring Awakening, American Idiot and American Psycho on Broadway, and Lazarus at the New York Theatre Workshop. In addition to everything Alabado has accomplished on stage, she's also a tremendous Arizona Diamondbacks fan! This week she joins host Al Malafronte to revisit some of her fondest memories growing up in Phoenix during the glory years of one of baseball's most successful expansion teams. She's currently living out every diehard fan's bucket list with a mission to visit every Major League stadium (and even keeps score when she goes!) Her stories from the stage and stadium are nothing short of awesome, as we talk about anything from the Diamondbacks' 2001 World Series run to her experiences working with both Tina Fey and David Bowie. In the spirit of our theme, we also brought back 7th Inning Stretch trivia, as Alabado tested her baseball and Broadway knowledge in an attempt to join our prestigious 'Winner's Circle.' We even had a guest appearance from her husband/diehard baseball fan/fellow Broadway veteran, Robert Lenzi (South Pacific, Tuck Everlasting, Tina) who served as her lifeline during the game. This conversation was a blast and epitomizes a true celebration of our two greatest passions. Mean Girls (2004) and Mean Girls 2 (2011) It's 2021 baby! We're not making any predictions, we're not even going to wish anyone a happy new year. Instead, we're just barreling in and hoping that this year doesn't kick our asses as hard as last year did. So, in order to get comfortable, we decided to take on a movie that we absolutely adore, and then look at its disappointing sequel. We hope you enjoy! And just remember, you're a Glenn Coco, not a Gretchen Wieners in our eyes. Black Lives Still Matter! If you know me, then you know that I have many different interests, many of which are not the most hip or popular. I am going to be having a series of sorts on my podcast where I explain to you why I love these things in hopes that you may learn a little bit more about me and so that I can maybe peak your interest regarding these things. I'm starting off this series with musicals (Broadway or otherwise). It's definitely a niche interest and it can be difficult to understand or even like, but lemme try to convince you why you should give it a chance. I'll explain how the experiences in my life have shaped me to be a musical fanatic, the technical aspects of the music that make musicals so genius, and some reasons as to why people have a hard time getting into musicals in hopes that I can change your mind by getting all of the excuses out of the way. Though I am no musical expert, I do have many years of listening to show tunes under my belt, so I think I can give you the Yen's Declassified of musicals/Broadway. Before you even begin to listen, one reason why you should give musicals a chance is because only in the musical world can Gretchen Wieners have a surprisingly deep moment while she battles an identity crisis. Yes, that's right -- there is a Mean Girls musical. So, take a chance on me, and have a listen as I tell you why I love musicals and why you should, too.
On this week's episode hosts Cassie and Daniel discuss the exciting events of the week. Cassie tells Daniel about a new winery that opened down the street from her. Daniel tells Cassie about going to see Lizzo at a small venue in D.C. and calls it a religious experience. The hosts celebrate local wine month! Cassie drinks the Carboy white blend (from a carboy growler!) while Daniel opens a bottle of Bourbourseville Cab. Sav. Cassie heads to the heartland with a group of murdering mean girls in the case of Shanda Sharer. Daniel heads down to Florida for the case of the deadly con artist in the murder of Elaine Parent. If there was a breakout star from last year‘s Broadway season, it would undeniably be Ashley Park. Her portrayal of the hilarious but lovable Gretchen Wieners in Mean Girls earned Park nominations for seven separate theatre awards last season. But as I found out when I sat down to speak with her, those are qualities that she also portrayed in her first Broadway outing five years earlier, is an ensemble member in Mamma Mia! during the show's 12th year on Broadway. Can you believe that it's been fifteen years since Tina Fey's first screenplay, Mean Girls hit theaters? Fifteen years since the world was first introduced to Cady Heron and Regina George. It's been fifteen years since Gretchen Wieners tried to make "fetch" happen. It didn't happen. (At least I don't think it happened.) And it's been fifteen years since Glen Coco received four candy canes!Mean Girls is a timeless film. There's really no other way to describe it. It's timeless, not because it reminds us of better times, but because it reminds us of real times. Everybody can relate to something in this movie. We all knew a Regina George; "the Plastics" were in each of our schools. Heck, they may even be in our offices today. The situations are real. Even as horrible and as awkward as they are, we've all been there, or at least we know someone who has. We have all lived it.Mean Girls is a piece of each of us which is why it is so universally loved. It is also why it's the next movie that Val, Tracy, and Jake discuss. Listen as they talk about why believe that it holds up after a decade and a half. They also share some of their favorite quotes and scenes. There is a lot of laughter and fun involved. Only listen if you're prepared to enjoy yourself. Do you have any thoughts about Mean Girls that you want to share with us? What about any other feedback or maybe there is a movie you would like us to discuss on an upcoming episode? Let us know at podcast@moviesthatmakeus.com. Molly wants to see more of the two of them together. #teamjingleyFunniest quote: "Occupied in observing Mr. Bingley's attentions to her sister, Elizabeth was far from suspecting that she was herself becoming an object of some interest in the eyes of his friend."
