Born out of a moment where the band nearly called it quits, this record feels less like a debut and more like survival — raw, unfiltered, and emotionally uncompromising. We get into that turning point, the chaos that shaped the album, and how tracks like “Nothing Is Original” set the tone for everything that followed. From confronting OCD and religious trauma on “Can We Watch Something Happy?” to pulling lyrical influence from voices like Sylvia Plath and Virginia Woolf, Piper opens up about writing without filters and treating lyrics as poetry. We also touch on creative control behind the self-produced record, navigating identity in hardcore, and balancing intensity with catharsis — all while building something entirely their own. Progressive metalcore pioneers Born of Osiris released their brand-new album ‘Through Shadows', on July 11th, via Sumerian Records. You can never accuse this band of stagnating, but even the most hardcore of fans will find themselves taken back by how much experimentation is going on here. Although that's not to suggest that it isn't evidently Born of Osiris and not filled with aggression, intensity, and brutish heaviness, because it is. Bigger, bolder, better. Slovenia's most awesomely audacious, genre defying metal pioneers Within Destruction will release their new album ‘Animetal', on April 11th, 2025, via Sumerian Records. ‘Genre-defying' – those are the words every fan of Within Destruction should be well aware of, especially those that have been there since the beginning. You simply cannot put this band in a box, and shouldn't want to, as their creativity comes from their freedom to do what they want. The album is heavily inspired by anime both lyrically and sonically, with a heavy focus on some of the plots and protagonists within the genre. The album plays out like a dystopian neon-lit fever dream, weaving more melody into their sound than ever before while retaining a firm grasp on the spine-tingling metallic aggression that put them on the map in the first place. In this interview, we spoke to guitarist Howard Fang about the new album, going into detail about the creative process and the experimentation that has led them to this point in time. We talk about their personal satisfaction with what they've created here, early reactions to songs, fan expectations, and so much more. Interview by Kris PetersWithin Destruction, Slovenia's most awesomely audacious, genre-defying metal pioneers, have officially announced their next chapter with the reveal of their upcoming album Animetal set for release on April 11, 2025, via Sumerian Records. To mark the news, the band has dropped their electrifying new single Cybergirl, accompanied by an official music video that plunges listeners into a dystopian world where the lines of reality are blurred. Packed with relentless riffs, soaring melodies, and their signature, anime-inspired electronic elements, Cybergirl epitomises Within Destruction's ability to innovate and push boundaries while staying rooted in the chaos of modern metal. In more good news, the Slovenian futurists have also announced their return to Australia on the eve of Animetal. Having truly transcended their deathcore origins, the band's once relentlessly brutal sound has flourished into a cyberized, anime-inspired, and unpredictable concoction. Fans of sheer guttural force fear not, however - as fellow Europeans Distant will be tagging along to bring their downtempo slams to Australia for the first time ever. With Melbourne's Gravemind rounding out the bill, this is a psychotic trio of modern metal sure to dazzle and pulverise.HEAVY caught up with Within Destruction's frontman Rok Rupkin recently to discuss the album and tour."If you listen to our other records and then listen to Animetal there is quite a bit of sound difference," he measured when asked to describe the new album musically. "The reason why that is the case is because we have decided to stray our own path to set ourselves away from the industry. Not only through the sound but also visually through art, through music videos and band members as well. So any time someone would listen to our song or see our album, they would immediately say I know this is Within Destruction. We wanted to build our own brand, in a way."In the full interview, Rok talks more about Animetal and what Within Destruction were going for musically, how their sound has changed since their previous release, the anime aspect to the album and how they fit in together, the early days of the band and where they fit in, musical growth and how much Within Destruction have left in them, their upcoming shows in Australia and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

The group was founded by vocalist Danny Leal, who remains the central figure of the band, known for his powerful growls and charismatic stage presence. The band released their debut album, The World Is Ours, in 2010 under Sumerian Records. This album set the tone for their musical direction, featuring heavy breakdowns, aggressive riffs, and a raw intensity that resonated with fans of the genre. Songs like "Intermission" and "Scarface" showcased their ability to merge brutal metal elements with catchy hooks, setting them apart from many of their peers. In 2012, they followed up with their second album, Red. White. Green., which continued to build on their established sound. We are joined by BAD OMENS guitarist Joakim "Jolly" Karlsson and DERISION CULT mainman Dave MCANALLY on this week's edition of The Loaded Radio Podcast Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, BAD OMENS emerged onto the American rock scene in 2015, founded by the trio of vocalist and producer Noah Sebastian, guitarist Nicholas Ruffilo, and bassist Vincent Riquier. The band expanded its lineup with the addition of guitarist Joakim "Jolly" Karlsson and drummer Nick Folio. Their inaugural self-titled album, released in 2016 under Sumerian Records, garnered critical acclaim, setting the stage for their musical journey. BAD OMENS would continue their sonic exploration with the release of "Finding God Before God Finds Me" in 2019, accompanied by a deluxe version in 2020. The momentum surged with their third album, "The Death of Peace of Mind," unleashed in 2022. This release featured the sleeper hit "Just Pretend," marking a significant milestone in BAD OMENS' career as their biggest hit to date. In the podcast, "Jolly" discusses the band's creative process, the upcoming tour with BRING ME THE HORIZON and much more. On a contrasting note, DERISION CULT emerges as an industrial metal project hailing from Chicago, Illinois. Propelled by caustic lyrics and thrash guitars immersed in a dystopian soundscape, their albums serve as poignant reflections of contemporary societal challenges. Fronted by Dave McAnally, DERISION CULT's lyrical focus delves into themes of manipulation and media influence perpetuated upon the public. In an age where news and discourse aim more to evoke emotions than stimulate critical thinking, DERISION CULT takes a stand. Th second portion of the podcast features DERISION CULT mastermind Dave McAnally who discusses the outfit's latest LP, "Mercenary Notes Pt 1". Exploring the ongoing narrative of "Mercenary Notes Pt 1", DERISION CULT delves into the pervasive themes of overstimulation and corporate-driven manipulation within the public sphere, all aimed at boosting product sales. With an extensive background in the advertising industry, mainman Dave McAnally draws upon decades of firsthand experiences to craft a collection of tracks that serves as a survival guide for navigating the challenges of maintaining mental health in a media-saturated world intent on stirring hysteria and sensationalism among the masses. Joining forces with producer Sean Payne, who contributes the classic Glitch Mode Chicago Industrial sound to the tracks, Dave McAnally shares his vision for pushing the boundaries of production quality. "Mercenary Notes Pt 1" boasts a star-studded lineup of guest contributors, including Chris Connelly (MINISTRY, PIGFACE), Reeves Gabrels (David Bowie, THE CURE), and Justin Broadrick (GODFLESH). Chris Connelly takes the lead vocals on one of the album's standout singles, "Deaf Blood," a track accompanied by an animated video crafted by Empire Animate based in Vancouver. The infusion of diverse talents further enriches DERISION CULT's sonic landscape, elevating the project to new heights within the industrial metal genre. In a musical landscape marked by both the dynamic rock soundscapes of BAD OMENS and the industrial metal resonance of DERISION CULT, these two projects offer contrasting yet equally impactful perspectives on the contemporary challenges facing society. While BAD OMENS reaches new heights with their melodic prowess, DERISION CULT digs deep into the gritty complexities of modern existence, creating a unique dichotomy within the realm of American rock and metal.

Hoo boy, where do we even start with this one? In 2017, Ash Avildsen, the head of Sumerian Records and son of the guy who directed Rocky, conjured into this world American Satan against all of our wishes. Chronicling the rise of badly named fake band The Relentless, it is posited as a retelling of Faust. It's more or less a teenage male's fantasy of being a rockstar, and a surprisingly low-quality one at that, in as much as it looks like shit. This flick's morals are dubious at best and it boasts some absolutely bonkers covers, in addition to a full roster of Sumerian Records bands and Larry King in his final screened appearance. You'll learn how to fail upward with the Devil and you get Bill Goldberg as a tour manager. All the while excusing and encouraging straight-up misogyny and pushing the ew factor out the wazoo. Did we mention mega creep Drake Bell is in this too? In order to see how this stacks up against actual life on the road as a touring band, Dylan brought on Connor Appleton from Come Mierda to suffer Sumerian-style through the trials and tribulations of The Relentless.  Content warning: sexual assault discussed Track featured is "Warzone" by Come Mierda off their demo. We had the pleasure of interviewing Bad Omens over Zoom video. Bad Omens slither through boundaries, only to ultimately choke convention in the process. The quartet—Noah Sebastian (vocals), Joakim “Jolly” Karlsson (guitar), Nick Ruffilo (bass), and Nick Folio (drums)—materialize with ghostly atmospherics, striking hooks, and the tingles of sensual high-register harmonies uplifted by cinematic production. Racking up over 250M worldwide streams to date and earning acclaim, the band presents an uncompromising and undeniable vision on their third full-length album, 'THE DEATH OF PEACE OF MIND' (Sumerian Records). The group's 2016 self-titled debut, 'Bad Omens', yielded fan favorites such as “Glass Houses” and “The Worst In Me” which eclipsed nearly 25 million Spotify streams. On its heels, 2019's 'Finding God Before God Finds Me' spawned “Dethrone” (13 million Spotify streams) and “Careful What You Wish For” (10 million Spotify streams). Along the way, they toured with numerous marquee acts and received tastemaker praise. After their first headline tour was canceled mid-way at the top of the global pandemic, the band found themselves at home in Los Angeles with plenty of time. Where they absorbed and imparted a different palette of unexpected inspirations. Channeling what the frontman describes at times as a “cursive sound” they embraced newfound confidence and boundlessly loose creativity. Anything went in the studio, and all “rules” were broken. Noah and Jolly wrote, produced, and engineered the music themselves while GRAMMY® Award-nominated producer and songwriter Zakk Cervini (Halsey, Grimes, Poppy, blink-182) lent his talents with the mix and master. Challenging himself, Noah decided to “make a track sampling items around the house, none of which were musical instruments”. This ultimately became the framework for the first single “THE DEATH OF PEACE OF MIND”. Claps puncture the icy soundscape as his voice stretches from a breathy moan into an evocative and entrancing hook, breaking from a whisper into the seductive chant, “It wasn't hard to realize. Love's the death of peace of mind.” It culminates on a climactic scream uplifted by a distorted crunch. By speaking it aloud, Bad Omens offer a level of comfort and empathy, with a sinister shroud. At the same time, they also give rock music a sexy new shape on 'THE DEATH OF PEACE OF MIND'. We want to hear from you! Between the Buried and Me have blazed their own path  and done things their own way now for some twenty years and change. So with a pandemic raging and nothing much else to do, they decided to record the follow up to their 2007 opus Colors, lovingly titled Colors II (Sumerian Records). Whether you go the Wikipedia route and call it new wave polka grunge or the band's route and call it adult contemporary progressive death metal, it kind of all fits and this is why the band is so endeared by its fans or, on the flip side, at arm's length to outsiders. Either way you slice it, Colors II is epic, colorful, and wildly entertaining. Just ahead of the August 20 release date, Buke had the chance to chat with vocalist and keyboardist Tommy Rogers about the new album, how it came to be, and behind the scenes. They also take a look back on Colors as well as band history and Tommy's background in music, becoming a vocalist, and how he came to play the keyboard. Time is spent on how the band doesn't pre-plan going into a new album and just how much time and effort goes into getting everything just right and sounding good, length of albums and the band's position on folks that say their music is too hard to get into, Tommy's solo work, and a discussion on their upcoming tour called An Evening with Between the Buried and Me. This is an excellent chat so dig in and enjoy!9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

Ash Avildsen is the Founder/CEO of Sumerian Records and was the Founder/CEO of The Pantheon Agency. For the past eight years, Ash has been a key player in the new wave of hard rock music as both an agent and a label owner. Discovering and developing acts like Asking Alexandria, Black Veil Brides, Animals As Leaders and many others from before the bands had ever toured or put out albums. Ash is also the director of his debut film “What Now.” Favorite Success Quote: “Success is not the key to happiness, happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be happy” ~ The Buddha Key Points: 1. Success Does Not Equal Happiness One of the common misconceptions of the modern world is that success automatically equals happiness. While it is true that many successful people experience tremendous levels of happiness, this is not due to their success, it is a product of their character and mindset. Do what makes you happy, do what makes you fulfilled, do things that no one would have to pay you for because you are so passionate about it. At the end of the day, you can't take a single dollar you earn with you, all the material accomplishments and “things” will fade away and all you will be left with is your experiences and the impact you had on the world. So do what you love and don't worry about the money; your happiness is contingent on your experiences and your attitude, not your bank account. 2. Don't Let Haters Get to You “You have made enemies? Good, that means you've stood up for something at some time in your life.” ~Winston Churchill. If you set out to accomplish anything big in your life, regardless of what it is, there will be haters. There will be people who tell you that you can't do it, that you aren't good enough, that you'll never succeed. Ignore every single one of them. No one great every accomplished anything by listening to the doubters, people who feel the need to try and bring you down are often suffering from their own insecurities and fear that you will succeed and they will not. Learn to accept criticism and ignore “trolling” your life, business, and relationships will all be better for it.   3. You Have to Have Faith That You Can Do It “Whether you believe you can or can't, you're certainly right” ~Henry Ford Everything starts with faith. The faith in yourself, your abilities, and your perseverance. You must have faith that if you put in the time, money and effort, you will inevitably succeed. How could you not? When you are educating yourself, learning from the best, taking massive action and learning from that action; success is inevitable. Have faith in yourself and faith in the process, and at the end of the day, you will achieve the things that you desire. 4. Try to Improve Your Batting Average No one is perfect, no one “bats 1,000,” but most of us have significant room for improvement in our lives. Take time to examine each area of your life, examine the results that you have achieved. What are you batting in health? In wealth? In love? In personal growth? Be honest and brutal with yourself. Figure out what you need to improve on and then take action. Life is nothing except for a never ending cycle of challenges and growth, if you aren't growing you are dying. Stay in the land of the living; improve everything. 6. Do it Yourself  We live in an age of men who lack self reliance. Society and technology have made us soft. Small occurrences that used to be minor bumps in the road are now considered catastrophic set backs. One flat tire, one broken bulb, one business project where you don't know exactly what to do, one fitness program that doesn't map out every second of your workout, and we are screwed. Learn to be independent, do things yourself. Do not rely on others for help or affirmation, just do it! If you don't know, than follow Tai Lopez's advice and “Just darn google it.” Do not allow yourself to become dependent on anything or anyone, do it yourself and make your own destiny.
