On this installment of The PAPER STREET Podcast, Becky and Shawn chat with veteran Director of Photography Eric Oh about his background, career, and all things cinematography: what it is, what it isn't, and why it's more than just knowing the technical aspects. Some folks may have heard of The Five C's of Cinematography (Camera angles, Continuity, Cutting, Close-ups, and Composition), but Eric suggests a few additional C's that are equally important to a DP's success: Collaboration, Compassion, and Communication. The hosts also talk with their globe-trotting guest about filming around the world, shooting during the pandemic, and some of his upcoming features, including recent Fantasia Festival selections THE FIGHT MACHINE and THE BREACH, as well as Paper Street Pictures' horror-comedy SORRY ABOUT THE DEMON. Plus, a fun round of 'Rapid Fire 15' with Eric, Becky's Deep Cut Slasher of the Week, THE SOUND OF MUSIC, the chiaroscuro of Caravaggio, the tastes of Toronto, and more! Greetings programs! Canadian actor Mark O'Brien has been working steadily since the mid-2000s with roles in CBC's The Republic of Doyle and AMC's Halt & Catch Fire, and movie appearances in Denis Villeneuve's Arrival, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett's Ready or Not, and Noah Baumbach's Marriage Story. This week sees his feature film writing and directorial debut, The Righteous, arrive in cinemas nearly a year after its premiere at least year Fantasia Festival. Grappling with themes of faith and guilt, The Righteous stars a who's who of Canadian talent including O'Brien himself, Henry Czerny, Mimi Kuzyk, and Nygel Bennet. It also picked up three Canadian Screen Award nominations this year including best original screenplay and best supporting actor for O'Brien himself.I sat down with Mark this week on Zoom to talk about the film. We're back with even more great Fantasia Festival coverage. Both Rachel and Dakota did solo interviews with directors who had their films screened at the best genre film festival in Canada. Dakota talked with Mark O'Brien, the director, writer and star of the Canadian horror film The Righteous. They talked about what horror films influenced Mark, finding the right cast members in two Canadian icons and getting to talk with Justin Chon about being a triple threat while he acted in Blue Bayou. Rachel talked with Travis Taute, the director of the South African action thriller Indemnity. They talked about the stigma of mental health, especially in men of colour, the grizzly side of firefighting that isn't talked about and struggling to figure out how to shoot an action film when you can't have actors too physically close to one another. The inimitably stylish worlds of American Film Noir and pre Nouvelle Vague French crime cinema collide in the most commanding display of technical execution ever implemented in translating the artistry of the heist to the silver screen. After getting caught in the crosshairs of Hollywood's blacklisting during the McCarthy Era, director Jules Dassin found himself excommunicated to France, with nary an opportunity to reinvigorate his career in sight. With a meager budget and a cast of relative unknowns, including himself, Dassin set about making a film which reflected his desolate state of being, basking in the fabulously dark aesthetics of Film Noir and aided by all the salacious attributes of contemporary French cinema at his disposal. Rififi is most famous for its thirty-six minute long heist sequence, which plays out in almost complete silence. It is a high watermark for both the genre at large and for technical filmmaking in the abstract, as meticulously planned and executed as the crack team of jewel thieves demonstrate themselves to be throughout the film. We are joined this week by fellow The Twin Geeks staff member Stephen Gillespie, who has just returned from his double dose of festival coverage alongside Calvin, doling out the details for the highs and lows of both Fantasia Festival and Japan Cuts. We follow up last week's documentary discourse of Robert Epstein's The Celluloid Closet (1995) with his earlier, more resounding success, The Times of Harvey Milk (1984). All of this and more from your independent resource on classic and contemporary cinema.Timestamps:0:00: Stephen and Calvin go to Fantasia Festival11:13 Stephen and Calvin go to Japan Cuts26:00 The Times of Harvey Milk (1984)38:22 Rififi

Glasshouse, directed by Kelsey Egan, is a South African film about a family living in a green house during a pandemic that causes people to lose their memories and a mysterious stranger appears that upends the families tight bond. We also chatted with Danielle Kummer and Lucy Harvey, the directors of the documentary Alien on Stage. The doc follows a group of bus drivers in Dorset, England as they are mounting a stage production of the classic horror film Alien and how it became an unlikely hit. Hello amigos Welcome to the klangwerk Radio Show!! This is episode 237, this week we have Vinz at the decks
Born in a small Minnesota town straight out of a David Lynch film, Chad Ferrin spent his formative years on a farm. The brutal winters, social isolation and exposure to violent animal slaughters influenced the predatory and survivalist themes he would later explore cinematically. In 1988, Ferrin sold his home in Minnesota to finance his first film, UNSPEAKABLE. Lloyd Kaufman, president of notorious genre production house Troma Entertainment, took a personal interest and distributed the film. After a multi-year relationship producing, writing and directing for Troma, Ferrin sold his 1968 1/2 Ford Mustang to finance his independent hit, THE GHOULS. Called “Haskell Wexler’s MEDIUM COOL revisited”, hailed by Variety and a winner of numerous international festival awards, THE GHOULS was an underground commercial and critical success. Ferrin immediately followed up with EASTER BUNNY, KILL! KILL!, a film teeming with dark humor and social commentary in the vein of Russ Meyer and Dario Argento. In 2009, SOMEONE’S KNOCKING AT THE DOOR took the festival circuit by storm with tried-and-true psychedelic grind-house style. In 2015 Ferrin was hired to bring the acclaimed graphic novel THE CHAIR to the screen. The success of that collaboration with producer Robert Rhine was followed up on the Fantasia Festival hit PARASITES and the gonzo, horror comedy EXORCISM AT 60,000 FEET.
As it wins audiences over at Fantasia Film Festival, director Ryan Kruger joins the boys to talk about his directorial debut, “Fried Barry”. Ryan talks about the 1980’s Sci-Fi films that inspired his tale of a drug addict being abducted by aliens and then going on a bender, and why he wanted to display the less glamorous side of Cape Town. In the intro, former guest and current friend Jahsaudi Perkins joins the boys once again to talk one of the films that he watched while working. Randy watched a Criterion Channel film starring Nick Nolte’s mustache. Clark talks about Thomas Jane, again. To wrap things up Russ and Clark share their slightly differing views on “The Oak Room”, from this year’s Fantasia Festival. Listening on an iPhone? Don't forget to rate us on iTunes! This amazing event brings us independent cinema from around the world and we chat about some of the films that have piqued our interest. Welcome to Slasher September scaredy cats! Today we’re watching 1984’s installment in the classic franchise: FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE FINAL CHAPTER. We talk a little bit about horror conventions, different Jasons, John Carpenter, new HALLOWEEN scores, and the return of Tom Savini. We play a guessing game, Dave talks about the 2017 Netflix flick THE LODGERS, and Chris tells us about a Fantasia Festival leftover, HARPOON. Then we really get into it and talk about great vs absent gore, small budget 80s slashers, Crispin Glover’s dance moves, machetes and faces, confusing settings, unexplained film reels, tons of rain, fake helicopters, safety on set, Jason’s fingernails, exploding cars, inflatable boats, harpoons to the groin, kill confirmation, chopping tents, the Trollhunter, and strategies for confusing Jason. We're hitting our stride here at 9to5 (dot cc) as keep going to see movies at what has so far been an incredible edition of the Fantasia Festival. Today, Jon and I talk about the social networking horror thriller Antisocial and Danny Trejo kicking some serious zombie ass in Zombie Hunter. The post 9to5 Goes to Fantasia 6: Antisocial and Zombie Hunter appeared first on 9to5 (dot cc).
Jon and Keith again tackle two wildy different films with Go Down Death and OXV: The Manual. Go Down Death is a black and white tribute film to the strange absurd film making of yesteryear and OXV is a mathematical, philosophical romance story about measurable luck. These sure do sound like Fantasia Festival films don't they? They sure do! The post 9to5 Goes to Fantasia 4: Go Down Death and OXV: The Manual appeared first on 9to5 (dot cc).
