Talking Tigers, the Official Richmond podcast

Two Richmond young guns are special guests on the latest episode of Talking Tigers. Hugo Ralphsmith, interviewed in the podcast’s studio, discusses the impressive progress he’s made in his wing role under Adem Yze’s coaching, plus the overall development of the Club’s exciting, youthful, playing group. Tom Sims, meanwhile, gets a “grilling” from esteemed Tiger veteran Nathan Broad in “Broady’s Zingers”. Also on this week’s show, the TT team analyse Richmond’s bold performance against Greater Western Sydney last Saturday and pay tribute to the likes of Dion Prestia, Tim Taranto, Jacob Hopper, Toby Nankervis, Tom Lynch, Sam Banks, Ben Miller and Kane McAuliffe for their excellent efforts throughout the contest. The “Going up the Country” segment features a small Victorian town where one of Richmond’s greatest-ever players grew up. In “60 Years of MCG Memories”, the focus is on arguably the best Grand Final fairytale story in League football history. And in “Hidden Tigerland”, club historian Rhett Bartlett has a fascinating tale about Richmond ‘Immortal’ Jack Titus. “Snow is blissful, it's pure, it's white, it's serene, it's a siren call. But it's also very dark, it's death. The darkest white is the perfect analogy for an avalanche,” said New York Times bestselling author Eric Blehm on Episode 35 about his latest book, The Darkest White, chronicling the life and untimely passing of legendary snowboarder Craig Kelly. Widely regarded as the Michael Jordan of snowboarding, Kelly was a pioneer in this uniquely American sport, and in his book, Blehm dives deep in to Kelly's life and his pivotal role in the history of snowboarding and splitboarding. Blehm also goes into remarkable detail about the 2003 La Traviata avalanche in the Selkirk Mountains of British Columbia, Canada, where Kelly and six other skiers lost their lives, including Truckee local Kathy Kessler. Our chat with Blehm covers a bit of the history here in Lake Tahoe, a bit about Kelly and an insightful discussion around the human factors involved in the tragic avalanche. For anyone immersed in skateboarding during the late 1970s, Tom "Wally" Inouye remains an indelible figure. Among his numerous magazine covers, his three iconic Skateboarder covers stand out as hallmarks of his influence. Born in Los Angeles on January 22, 1959, Wally's journey into skateboarding began in 1967 when he repurposed his sister's roller skate wheels into a makeshift board. In '73, Wally earned the nickname "Wally" after inventing the wall ride, a revolutionary move that would shape the sport. In '76, Wally turned pro and signed with Sims, dominating magazine coverage unlike any other at the time. He even pulled off back-to-back Skateboarder covers in '77, cementing his place in skateboarding history. Wally ingeniously launched Inouye's pool service in '76 a clever ploy to gain access to backyard pools for skate purposes! By posing as a legitimate pool service, Wally and his friends could drain the pools, skate, and then refill them without arousing suspicion. This also inadvertently provided Wally with valuable intel on prime skate spots.Wally's passion for sideways sports extends to snowboarding, which he embraced early on after forming a solid friendship with his sponsor Tom Sims.  Wally was even lucky enough to test out the first snowboards made by Tom Sims! Wally instantly fell in love with snowboarding after Tom opened his eyes to this new sport that turned his local mountains into giant skateparks and the best thing was snow was so much softer than concrete. In 2019, Wally's contributions were recognized with induction into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame. His pioneering spirit helped shape both skateboarding and snowboarding into the vibrant lifestyles and sports they are today.
