We're back with another AFTN Soccer Show packed full of Vancouver Whitecaps, Major League Soccer, Canadian Premier League, League1 BC, and Canadian college chat. Vancouver Whitecaps' coaching search is over and the new man at the helm is 51-year-old Dane Jesper Sørensen. The former Brondy and Denmark U21 head coach bring a wealth of experience to Vancouver as a player and a manager. We delve into the appointment and ponder what will the hire mean to the 'Caps? Some fans are enthused, some feel it's underwhelming, but we won't know until the season plays out. The appointment sees every MLS coaching search complete. We look at the other hires around the league this year, including Robin Fraser to Toronto FC. A surprisingly underwhelming appointment or a shrewd one? Plus we look at some coaching extensions in the CPL. We've two feature interviews to bring you this week. First up is part one of a two-part interview with TSS Rovers Sporting Director and co-owner Colin Elmes. This episode we chat with Colin about the successful 2024 for the Rovers, look ahead to what 2025 might have in store for them, as the Whitecaps potentially await in the Canadian Championship, and talk finances, losses, and the question everyone always asks, what is all that share money used for?! Turning our attention to the college game, 2024 was a very successful one for BC schools. None more so than UBC Thunderbirds, who achieved an unprecedented USPORTS double on the men's and the women's side. We chat with UBC midfielder Joven Mann about a great year for the team and him personally, his footballing journey through the Whitecaps, and the adventure that now awaits after he was selected by HFX Wanderers in the 2025 CPL draft. Here's the rundown for the main segments from the episode: 01.27: Intro 07.45: The Whitecaps finally have their man - welcome Jesper Sørensen 29.50: The MLS managerial merry-go-round is complete 45.47: Ghotbi and Dos Santos given CPL extensions 53.40: TSS Rovers' Colin Elmes Interview - Part One 98.05: UBC Thunderbirds' Joven Mann interview 118.35: Wavelength - Nine Steps To Ugly - Bobby Charlton's Haircut

We're back with another AFTN Soccer Show packed full of Vancouver Whitecaps, Major League Soccer, and Canadian Premier League chat. It's that sad time of the year. A time of endings. Teams' seasons are done. Players and coaches will be moving on. Leagues are over. The college season finishes and champions are crowned. What are we to do with our lives now?!! Well, talk about all of it for the next couple of months on the podcast of course, and look ahead to all of the seasons next year! The Whitecaps season came to a fighting, but also frustrating, end in LA on Friday night. The narrow 1-0 loss to LAFC in their third and deciding first round playoff match-up brings to an end a 50th anniversary season for the club that feels that it could, and should, have given so much more. We look back at the LAFC game and ponder what's next for the club, the players, and Vanni Sartini as we move into 2025. Was this year one of progression, regression, or just more of the same for the 'Caps? Turning our attention to the CPL, we look back at Cavalry lifting their first North Star Cup league championship, unpack some of the things coming out of Commissioner Mark Noonan's State of the League address, delve into the runners and riders for the confirmed two team league expansion in 2026, and revisit last week's chat about what we feel is wrong at Vancouver FC. All of this plus we look at a fantastic week for college soccer in BC, as UBC Thunderbirds win a historic two U SPORTS national championships and Capilano Blues go on an upset run for the ages to win bronze in the CCAA. Plus Prolapse continue their residency as our Album of the Month, there's more Britpop songs, and Goldie Lookin' Chain make a storming comeback in Wavelength. Here's the rundown for the main segments from the episode: 01.27: Intro 06.55: Capilano Blues defy the odds to win CCAA bronze - my week at nationals 14.03: UBC win historic double U SPORTS championships 18.40: Whitecaps season ends in LA 43.35: Was Whitecaps' 2024 season one of progression, regression, or more of the same? 59.55: Whitecaps have some key player decisions to make 67.42: Does Vanni continue as 'Caps coach into 2025? 80.10: Miami playoff loss will cause tears of disappointment and joy! 91.00: Cavalry beat Forge to lift the CPL championship 106.25: Mark Noonan's State of the CPL address 127.10: CPL expansion - the runners and riders and where the two new teams should be 145.50: What's wrong with Vancouver FC - part two 163.10: Wavelength - Goldie Lookin' Chain - Full Kit 168.40: Trump and football - past, present, and future

Most recently, you may have seen Claire on the sidelines of the 2023 Grey Cup championship game as part of the TSN broadcast. She is a 2-time Canada West libero of the year and even nabbed the CIS Libero of the Year title in 2010. Claire's dreams didn't stop when volleyball ended though. Her dream of becoming a TV broadcaster for TSN was also on her list… and much like she pursued her volleyball dreams, she went after the TV dream too. The best part is she feels the best stories in her life are yet to come… but stop for a bit and listen to this one. But be careful, you may be inspired to put in a whole lot of work after you do. 'Take care of your body – it's the only place you have to live.' (Jim Rohn)  'As a young trainer I thought I could do everything. Now  as an older trainer I realized that there are some things I do really, really well, and those are the clients I like to work with because that's when my best attributes come out' (Cale Dougans)  Every body needs to move.  When the subject of slowing aging comes up, invariably there is immense polarization over diet and nutrition, use of medications or alternative therapies. But one area about which there is general agreement, is that keeping your body moving is fundamental to health. Regular exercise, whether through sport, resistance training, cardio workouts, work activities or the activities of daily life positively affects the body and the mind. One of the most important ways that anyone can take care of their body is through staying physically fit and active.   Many national and global guidelines have been issued on the recommended minimum quantity and frequency of exercise for health but many adults don't even meet these minimum goals. Self-isolation and lockdowns during the pandemic further restricted opportunities for working out.  In today's program we explore some of the factors that keep people from exercising and becoming fit, and discuss programs that aim to help seniors restore and maintain functionality.  Cale Dougans is a personal trainer and one of the key professionals that accelerated my recovery and rehabilitation after spinal surgery. I began to train with Cale when I retired and took up ballroom dancing as my main fitness and fun activity. I badly needed help with strength, flexibility and posture. The trust I developed in his kinetics knowledge and training skills, by working with him prior to my surgery, was important in helping me overcome my fear of re-injury during rehabilitation.   Cale grew up playing competitive baseball and basketball. His passion for sports led him to study at the University of British Columbia, where he completed his Degree in Human Kinetics and competed for the UBC Thunderbirds baseball team in their inaugural season.  As a young undergrad working in the UBC Student's Recreation Centre, Cale was part of the early days of the Changing Aging Program, which specialized in functional fitness for older adults.  With over 20 years of experience in the fitness industry, Cale is the director of The Studio at Envision, where he manages the daily operations of the training floor, as well as training his personal clients.  Cale recomends Make an honest assessment of yourself before you start an exercise program. Check in with your doctor to help you assess risk factors that may require starting slower in some areas  Do your research before picking a trainer and be sure that they have experience in the areas you need. Some work with elite athletes, others specialize in sports injuries, others work with older adults. Find one that is expert in what you need.  Build a long term relationship so your trainer knows you well and realise that your training needs will change over time.  Reach Cale at The Studio Website: https://www.envisionphysio.com/ Email: cale.dougans@gmail.com  To learn how you can decelerate your aging trajectory,  stay vibrant and vigorous, or start your own online business in wellness and anti-aging: Contact  Dr. Gillian Lockitch https://linktr.ee/askdrgill   Email: askdrgill@gmail.comSchedule a complimentary Living Younger Discovery Call at https://bit.ly/3LbWvSV    Order your copy of Growing Older Living Younger: The Science of Aging Gracefully and the Art of Retiring Comfortably at www.gillianlockitch.com

For each "Champions Corner" episode, we do a little blast-to-the-past to catch up with former Gryphon student-athletes who helped secure some of the greatest championship moments in U of G history. To this day, the Guelph Gryphons have been crowned national champions in football just once in program history. The year was 1984. The Gryphons put together an unforgettable playoff run, culminating with a 22-13 victory over the Mount Allison Mounties on Nov. 24, 1984 in the Vanier Cup, which was played at Varsity Stadium in Toronto in front of nearly 20,000 fans!Joining us for Episode 27 are a pair of proud Gryphon alum from the '84 Gryphon football squad, who had front row seats to watch the Gryphon fans storm the field and tear down the uprights at Varsity Stadium on that cold, November day. From the offensive side of the ball, we have Jed Tommy joining us! Jed wore No. 23 for the Gryphons and was the team's bruising fullback who was named Team MVP of the '84 team. Jed suited up for the Gryphons from 1981-1984 and was inducted into the Gryphon Hall of Fame in 2004. After his playing days as a Gryphon, Jed went on to put together an outstanding CFL career which included earning the title of Grey Cup champion with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 1986. Also joining us is Pat Tracey, who was a starting cornerback on the Gryphons 1984 Vanier Cup-winning team. Pat played football for the Gryphons from 1982-1986, serving as a key piece of a loaded Gryphon defence. Following his football playing days at the University of Guelph, Pat Tracey went on to put together one of the most decorated and respected collegiate coaching careers in our country, with over 30 years of coaching experience in Canadian university football. Pat's coaching career started at his alma mater, where he was actually part of two more Yates Cup championships with the Gryphons in 92 and 96. He was at Queen's University from 2000-to-2013 (and was defensive coordinator of the Gaels 2009 Vanier Cup team) and currently serves as defensive coordinator out west with the UBC Thunderbirds. Pat Tracey's impressive coaching resume also includes a pair of stops in the pro ranks, with the former Gryphon coaching with the Ticats in 1998 as well as with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers from 2014-15.Jed and Pat share some vivid memories from the Gryphons run to the 1984 Vanier Cup, with the full episode available on Thursday, Jan. 7 across all major podcast platforms.

My, how a decade flies by! Today, we start the mini-series by inviting former UBC Thunderbirds’ quarterback Billy Greene to the VL-Pod. Yes, we talk plenty of Shrum Bowl memories, but we also talk about the quarterback’s high school career, his 2011 award-winning campaign with the ‘Birds. There’s also time to talk about his new career and the mentors who have played such a huge role in his life. Kyla Richey is a mentor and role model for young Canadian athletes. Being able to share her journey has been something she doesn't take lightly. But she also wants young women to realize that life is not always what it appears to be. Although it may seem as though she has a picture perfect reality, she has experienced deep loss and great pain with the loss of her brother and subsequent battle with anxiety and depression. This conversation explores our need to share our lives vulnerably and the quest to end the stigma that we need to have our lives together to happy and successful.  Kyla Richey is currently captain of team Canada women's volleyball. She has played for over ten years with the senior national team and has so far played seven years of professional volleyball around the world (Germany, Turkey, Italy, Greece, Azerbaijan, Indonesia, and Peru). She played for the powerhouse UBC Thunderbirds where she won five back to back national titles. Despite a very successful sporting career, Kyla has had her fair share of ups and downs. The summer before her senior year of high school, her two best friends were killed in a car crash while she was away competing with the Junior National Team. More recently, her younger brother died six years ago and since then, has been struggling with the realities of balancing this life with her grief. An advocate for younger athletes, she wants to bring attention to the daily struggles that we all try to burry. Whether that is dealing with confidence, learning how to step into your true self, balancing athletics and grief, or battles with mental health, Kyla wants to bring it all to the surface. Talking through these issues and being as real as she can be on social media and on her website (re her blog), Kyla hopes that she can foster community and relationship between individuals who might relate. With dreams set high on qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, she is working hard to inspire both teammates and individuals in her volleyball circle worldwide.  Consider supporting the podcast monthly by joining the Patreon community / Connect with Andrea and The Couragecast on IG or Facebook Shop our Amazon Affiliate / www.thecouragecast.com

The UBC Thunderbirds are arguably the most decorated sports program in Canada. Last year, Blake Bill, former football coach for the Calgary Dinosaurs, led the ‘Birds to a thrilling Vanier Cup victory to bring the team back to relevance. But 33 years before that, coach Frank Smith developed the football program and built the team into a Western Canadian hegemon. This documentary explores his team’s rise from perennial boxing bags to 1982 and 1986 Vanier cup champions using audio from CiTR archives, interviews with key players, and coverage by the Ubyssey in the 80’s.Producer: Olamide OlaniyanOlamide is a third year UBC student double majoring in Economics and Political Science. He got involved at the station when he started his show, Soul Sandwich, and has since fallen in love. He is interested in the ways that we can tell sports stories and the ability athletics has to affect culture. This is his first dive into radio documentary.

Well that's it all over for another season. Exciting along the way but disappointing at the very end. That was Vancouver Whitecaps year. A 2-0 loss to Portland Timbers in their Western Conference Semi-final second leg match at BC Place on Sunday evening brought the 'Caps season to a sudden stop. We look back at the game, the few highs and the larger woes, and hear from both coaches, Vancouver's Carl Robinson and Portland's Caleb Porter. Just what went wrong, which players simply didn't rise to the occasion and what does this season do to set the 'Caps up moving forward and what changes do they need to make to take that next step? But there's still another game to come at BC Place this week. The Canadian men's national team are in town to face Honduras on Friday. We take a quick look ahead to that World Cup qualifier and hear the thoughts for Whitecaps President, and former Canadian player and manager, Bobby Lenarduzzi. And there's still time for a quick look at some more successful Canadian sides this weekend - the Ottawa Fury and the UBC Thunderbirds. Even Steve Nash has a few things to say to us. Have a listen!

Chivas v Vancouver Whitecaps. An uninspiring game that produced several talking points. And we're here to cover as many of them as we can. Episode 48 of "There's Still Time" is a Chivas post game special. Michael and Steve look at all the game's talking points from the two goals to the controversial first half sending off. How unlucky were Chivas not to come away with all three points? How did it take one sub to change the game almost single handed? And what happened to that attacking style and flair that we saw in week one and was promised on the road? A lot of questions and a lot more besides. We try and answer as many as we can and look at all of the Week 2 action in MLS. And there's still time to turn our attention to more local matters, as we chat with UBC Thunderbirds head coach Mike Mosher after his team's latest victory over cross city rivals SFU. We look at the win and the recent back to back Championship win and bring you news of what Thunderbirds will be playing for the Whitecaps U23's this summer. Have a listen!
