Link to MusicIn today's episode, we learn the great antiphon from the washing of the feet on Holy Thursday: Ubi Caritas.Where charity and love are, there God is.The love of Christ has gathered us into one.Let us exult, and in Him be joyful.Let us fear and let us love the living God.And from a sincere heart let us love each other (and Him).Where charity and love are, there God is.Therefore, whensoever we are gathered as one:Lest we in mind be divided, let us beware.Let cease malicious quarrels, let strife give way.And in the midst of us be Christ our God.Where charity and love are, there God is.Together also with the blessed may we see,Gloriously, Thy countenance, O Christ our God:A joy which is immense, and also approved:Through infinite ages of ages. Amen.

Notre Père and Ubi Caritas Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986) Notre Père [Sung in Latin] [English translation:] Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Ubi Caritas (from Quatre Motets sur des thèmes grégoriens pour chœurs a cappella, Op. 10) [Sung in Latin] [English translation:] Where charity and love are, God is there. Christ's love has gathered us into one. Let us rejoice and be pleased in Him. Let us fear, and let us love the living God. And may we love each other with a sincere heart. Where charity and love are, God is there. “Notre Père” and “Ubi Caritas” were recorded by the Houston Chamber Choir in the Grammy® Award-winning album “Duruflé: Complete Choral Works” released in 2019 by Signum Classics.

Paul Mealor has been described in the New York Times as, the most important person to emerge in Welsh music since William Mathias. He rose to global attention when his motet Ubi Caritas et Amor was performed at the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton in 2011. That same year he became the first classical composer to hold both the classical and pop chart No 1’s at the same time while his single, ‘Wherever You Are’, a piece for The Military Wives Choir, reached UK Christmas No 1. Born in St Asaph, North Wales, Paul now splits his time between Anglesey and Aberdeen where he is Professor of Composition. Richard and Gideon caught up with Paul ahead of his US premier of Requiem at Carnegie Hall as part of the DCINY commemoration of The Great War. During the episode, the boys discuss Paul’s overnight fame, his pledge to defend the city of Aberdeen, and what it‘s like being the Warren Garland of classical music.
On September 23, 2018 when Pope Francis visited Lithuania, I had an opportunity to make music on the organ, together with choral polyphony and Gregorian chant while he was visiting Museum of Genocide Victims in Vilnius. The performers were chamber choir "Aidija" and Schola Cantorum Vilnensis", led by Romualdas Grazinis and myself at 3 manual digital Johannus organ which stood inside a special tent in front of a huge crowd in Lukiskiu Square. My role was to improvise versets and accompany Gregorian chant. Towards the end we were not sure when the Pope would appear so we kept performing a mix of Tu es Petrus and Ubi Caritas... If you want to find out what happened, here's the audio recording.

The emotional, some say spiritual, effect music has on us is notoriously difficult to put into words. It’s sort of like analyzing why something is funny. The reality ever exceeds our verbal grasp. Why are minor chords sad and majors happy? Why, when you hear a song from your childhood is there a superglue of emotion attached, bringing you instantly to those moments long ago? This week’s guest is one of the greats in the choral music world. If you enjoy music with a lush, cinematic sound created for multiple voices on the exquisite side, Morten Lauridsen is your man. The most frequently performed American composer of choral music, Lauridsen is a National Medal of Arts recipient (2007), he was composer-in-residence of the Los Angeles Master Chorale (1994–2001), and has been a professor of composition at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music for more than 50 years. His work has been recorded on over 200 CDs including five with Grammy nominations. We’re talking serious musical gravitas here. On November 11, 2018, a massive concert for international television is being held at the Brandenburg Gate in Germany to mark the centenary of the end of World War One. In addition to Welsh composer Karl Jenkins’ Mass for Peace, the other piece selected is Lauridsen’s beautiful Lux Aeterna. I predict not a dry eye on that night. You can imagine my surprise when, during the interview, the great man spontaneously began playing a portion of his classic O Magnum Mysterium to explain why the notes for the word “Virgo” ground the piece in a special way! In this interview, you will learn: Why every artist has to risk failure; as not trying guarantees failure How Lauridsen became a late bloomer as a composer, at age 50, and maybe how you can, too Why poetry deserves a massive revival The importance of stillness and quiet for human serenity and creativity The mysterious way in which music connects us to the divine Resources mentioned in this episode: O Magnum Mysterium performance Lux Aeterna performance Profound talk by director Karl Paulnack to music freshmen at Boston College Conservatory CD album, Morten Lauridsen: Lux Aeterna; Madrigali; Ave Maria; Ubi Caritas CD album streaming, Lauridsen: Mid-Winter Songs Connect with Morten: www.mortenlauridsen.net The Patrick Coffin Show is 100% listener supported. Karen Clark first visited our program when Matthew Fox spoke to us of Hildegard of Bingen. Karen sang "O Virtus Sapientiae" by Hildegard. Listening to the exquisite music, something stirred in me and got up and erased all my plans for September and wrote “the call to sing a sacred song.” So it's perfect that Karen Clark returns today to not only sing more Hildegard, but sacred songs from all times and places, proving that this soul call is truly universal. You'll hear sacred songs from ancient China to 21st-century America. You'll even get to sing along to "Ubi Caritas"!

With Mark Lawson. Joanna Lumley and Robert Lindsay star in Trevor Nunn's new production of The Lion in Winter, taking the roles made famous by Katharine Hepburn and Peter O'Toole in the 1968 film, the tale of a dysfunctional family Christmas with the Plantaganets. Kathryn Hughes reviews. America Ferrera, the star of TV show Ugly Betty, discusses making her British stage debut as the alluring publicity-seeker Roxy Hart in the musical Chicago. She also reflects on her famous TV role, and how she prepared for it. Welsh composer Paul Mealor received an unexpected boost to his career when his choral piece Ubi Caritas was chosen to be performed at the Royal Wedding earlier this year. He discusses how Ubi Caritas started life as a secular rather than a sacred piece, and why he wasn't in Westminster Abbey on day itself, despite receiving a much-coveted invitation. Songs and Meditations 1. Introduction 2 A Meditation Song with Tibtan Bowl from Atamira (a Hathor guide) There is a desire within each of us to find that inner tone or quality that reflects who we truly are. We seek to find a place within ourselves that allows us to feel ultimately received. This internal space allows us to feel we are truly loved, just the way we are.3 Releasing into Spirit The quality of our expression into the outer world reflects the quality of our inner world. This inner tone or vibration is the quality that others sense intuitively. 4 Ubi Caritas et Amor, Deus ibi Est (chant and meditation)Where Tenderness and Love abide, There is GodRevealing those qualities of tenderness and love that are in our lives reveals where God or Spirit resides in our lives. Who we are is a reflection of that Spirit of God which vibrates, sings and lives within each of us. Let yourself relax and receive. Feel your feet and let the sound move through you. When you are ready, let your Spirit sing.5 Our Ancestors and Our Spiritual Gifts How is it that your soul has received the gifts of your ancestors, and fashioned these gifts into your own life's tapestry? How have you integrated what you see as a shadow gift into your life? Can you imagine that your ancestor's souls created these gifts, both of the light and of the shadow, just for you? And that your soul has chosen to receive them? In some fashion you have received all of these gifts, and made them your own.6 O factura Dei – a meditation song The prophet within each of us knows that Spirit is present. This internal sense tells us that because we are present, God is present. And because God is present, loving tenderness abides for All.
