After a Dream is dedicated to French masters of the 19th and 20th centuries. They include César Franck (1822-1890), Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924), Claude Debussy (1862-1918), Maurice Ravel (1875-1937), and Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921).In the interpretation of Meneses and Budu, Fauré's Après un Rêve combines fervor and serenity. When the duo performs Franck's Sonata, the dialogue between the instruments nods to the expressiveness of singing and the eloquence of speech, as their phrases inquire, affirm, and exclaim. In Vocalise-Étude en Forme de Habanera, the variety of sonorities, flowing ceaselessly in this recording, imparts to Ravel's composition a sense of musical time that seems much more expansive than its minutes—a recurring perception throughout the album. Ultimately, After a Dream showcases the paradox of memorable interpretations— the sensation that music arises solely within them and belongs exclusively to them.Tracks1. Synopsis On today's date in 1972, a most unusual chamber work by the American composer George Crumb had its premiere at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Ideally, and "impractically" according to Crumb, it should have been heard, not in a concert hall in March… but in the open air… heard at a distance across a body of water, on a moonlit evening in August. The work was entitled Vox Balaenae, which is Latin for The Voice of the Whale, and it's scored for three masked musicians, performing on electric flute, electric cello, and amplified piano. Crumb writes, "The work was inspired by the singing of the humpback whale, a tape recording of which I had heard two or three years previously. Each of the three performers is required to wear a black half-mask or visor-mask. The masks, by effacing the sense of human projection, are intended to represent, symbolically, the powerful impersonal forces of nature. I have also suggested that the work be performed under deep-blue stage lighting." In the opening of his piece, marked "Vocalise... from the beginning of time," Crumb quotes, with tongue firmly planted in masked cheek, the famous sunrise theme from Richard Strauss' "Also sprach Zarathustra," used to great effect in the opening of the Kubrick film "2001." Midday on Music continues now in the studio of our sister station, WTMD in Towson, where we are fortunate to be joined by members of the Mount Vernon Virtuosi Cello Gang. The founder of the Virtuosi is Amit Peled, an internationally acclaimed ‘cellist and conductor and, for the past two decades, a professor at Hopkins' Peabody Institute conservatory. Peled founded the Mount Vernon Virtuosi five years ago to provide professional opportunities for young musicians, and to bring music to people young and old throughout the Baltimore-Washington area, in venues that are not restricted to just concert halls. The Mount Vernon Virtuosi Cello Gang is a rotating ensemble composed of Peled and five of his gifted Peabody student cellists who frequently tour the country. The Gang currently includes Shawn Hsu, Paul Lee, Rachel Taylor, Natalia Vilchis and Jiaoyang Xu. For today's Midday mini-concert, the group performs three distinctive works beautifully arranged for six cellos: Georg Golterman's Serenade, Op.119, No. 2; Sergei Rachmaninoff's Vocalise; and a Brett Howland medley arrangement of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah and George David Weiss's What a Wonderful World. You can find video of today's performances by the Mount Vernon Virtuosi ‘Cello Gang on the WYPR YouTube page. Andris Nelsons will conduct the piece "Trumpet Concerto: night-sky-blue" on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. along with Sergei Rachmaninoff's “Vocalise” for orchestra, which closes with the composer's substantial Symphony No. 3, a late work characterized by scintillating orchestration. Olga Scheps was born in Moscow in 1986, the daughter of two pianists, and discovered the instrument for herself at the age of four. She began studying the piano more intensively after her family moved to Germany in 1992. At an early age she had already developed her own unique style of keyboard playing, which combines intense emotiveness and powerful expressivity with extraordinary pianistic technique. Among those who discovered these talents was Alfred Brendel, who has encouraged the young pianist. A holder of scholarships from the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben and Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes, she completed her studies with Professor Pavel Gililov in her adopted home of Cologne in 2013, passing her Concert Examination with Distinction. She rounded out her training with Professor Arie Vardi and Professor Dmitri Bashkirov. Olga Scheps now performs with great success in world-famous concert halls such as the Elbphilharmonie, the Berlin and Cologne Philharmonie, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Cadogan Hall London, the Zurich Tonhalle, and the Suntory Hall Tokyo. She is a sought-after guest at festivals like the Rheingau Musik Festival, Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Kissinger Sommer, Heidelberger Frühling, Klavier-Festival Ruhr, Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, MDR Musiksommer, Lucerne Festival am Piano, ACHTBRÜCKEN Festival in Cologne, Mozart Festival Würzburg, Mersin Festival in Turkey, and Menuhin Festival Gstaad. Since 2009 Olga Scheps has been an exclusive Sony Classical artist. Her debut album ‘Chopin' immediately won an ECHO Klassik award. The two recordings that followed, ‘Russian Album' (2010) and ‘Schubert' (2012), were also highly praised by the press. Her fourth Sony Classical CD was released early in 2014 and features Chopin's Piano Concertos nos. 1 and 2 with the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra. The success of her solo-album ‘Vocalise', published in 2015, was surpassed by her latest album ‘Satie' which Olga Scheps has recorded on the occasion of the French composer's 150th birthday: It reached top 1 of the German classical music charts at first go. Her CD "Tchaikovsky" was released in October 2017 and she broke new ground with the album "100 % Scooter - Piano Only", on which she recorded arrangements of the most famous Scooter hits by Sven Helbig. In March 2019 Olga Scheps' album “Melody” was released, containing pieces spanning four centuries, from Bach to Aphex Twin. Her recording of the Weinberg Piano Quintet with the Kuss Quartet was released in late 2019. Olga Scheps is a Steinway Artist. Rami came from a musical family with a composer father and a piano-teacher mother. He started writing music as early as age 6! But the dedication required for his piano playing superseded his composition days until later in life. There are some fun stories and anecdotes from this musical family you will find during our chat. So.... what does a concert pianist think about practicing? The answer may surprise you! The preparation of a concert pianist and how to create a self-managed international concert career! What is Rami's teaching philosophy, especially given that he's written a book on piano teaching? You might find it surprising as well! "Art imitates life, and life imitates art." Rami's musical life is closely tied to his personal life through travels, joy, and tragedies. The stories are recorded in his compositions. In this edition of In The Ring With Eusebius McKaiser, I ask whether Professor Adam Habib, director at SOAS, is a racist who should be fired for vocalising the N-word in a webinar with students. There are many complexities that these bald questions raise, and with the help of some excellent guests (Lovelyn Nwadeyi, a social justice strategist; Rob Berkely, who works on anti-racism in the UK; and Kopano Ratele, an academic psychologist and author), we work slowly and systematically through all of the linguistic, ethical, political and leadership issues that this incident has forced us to have a necessary public discussion about.
