What would you do if you weren’t afraid? Kara Goldin left her Vice President job at AOL to launch Hint Water with one simple goal: Make water that tastes great. Finding herself overweight, with low energy + adult acne, Kara discovered her diet soda habit was the culprit. To entice herself to drink water in its place, she added “hints” of fruit flavor to plain water. This was the inspiration behind the fastest growing, #1 flavored water in America: Hint. Today, Kara shares how she uses rejection as motivation, balances work with raising her four children and how “success” looks different for each of us. Get your favorite Hint Water ready because this conversation will have you racing forward with ferocious optimism! SHOW NOTES: Huffington Post listed her as one of six disruptors in business, alongside Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg. Teamwork: Growing up with five siblings, two over 15 years older than her, she had great role models. As a leader in the community, Kara's mother taught her to "love what you're doing" while her dad was an innovator for the brand Healthy Choice. "Just go for it. Stop worrying about what could happen. Instead, enjoy the journey." Kara encourages us all to look at our accomplishments to be reminded of our own success, including friendships. "Passion trumps experience." Learn more about Hint Water. After the sudden death of her 12-year-old son Jack, Anna Whiston-Donaldson felt lonely, heavy with guilt and uncertain if she could ever be happy again. Anna began to courageously share her family’s tragedy + the puzzling, unclear territory of grief in hopes of helping others, first through her blog and then her New York Times bestselling book Rare Bird and children’s book A Hug From Heaven. Writing has helped Anna find comfort + strength. Today, Anna shares how to find hope within impossible circumstances, positive ways to cope with grief and support others navigating darkness. If you’re grieving a loss, or love someone who is, this conversation is for you. SHOW NOTES: After Jack's death, Anna was unable to find resources for her grieving daughter Margaret. This inspired Anna to write children's book A Hug From Heaven. While home from college, Anna's mother unexpectedly died from a brain hemorrhage and although she was the "heart of the home", her family was unsure how to process the grief. "When you have community around you, willing to acknowledge your loss, that helps strengthen you." Anna leaned into her faith as a way to be close to her mom. Isaiah 43: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. "Life is full of "and". Sadness and joy." Helping others who are grieving: The most important thing Anna + her family received after Jack's death was acknowledgment of their grief. Fearing that Jack died alone, Anna met the paramedic that stayed with Jack until he was taken away from the scene, recalling the singing birds from the trees. Luke 1:37: For nothing is impossible with God. Against the odds, Anna unexpectedly finds out she's pregnant with a healthy boy named Andrew Luke. Anna's advice to those who feel hopeless: I made a concerted effort to let myself feel, acknowledge + live with pain. While that was happening, gratitude found it's way in. Real joy + real hope are possible in every circumstance. Get Anna Whiston-Donaldson's New York Times bestseller Rare Bird and her children's book A Hug From Heaven. In my late twenties, I did not believe in myself. Before I realized I had a story worth sharing – or in the truth that we all have a story worth sharing – my longtime friend, Rusty Keeley, believed enough to invest in having me speak to his company. He was my first client. That inflection point launched my speaking career. He then directly and indirectly introduced me to more than 100 speaking clients. He wanted nothing out of these introductions other than to see a life-giving story spread into a marketplace. Subsequently, he’s challenged me as a friend and board member to dramatically grow as a speaker and business owner, not for my own self interest, but to better the lives of others. It’s no surprise, then, that Rusty, CEO of Keeley Companies which does $500 million in revenue, describes his job as: “I get to make sure there is food on the table for the families of 1,800 Keeley’ns. I take that very seriously.” It’s his people-first mentality that has both grown his company’s bottom line 100x during his tenure + that has built the unmatchable culture that keep “Keeley’ns” thriving. It’s also why we chose to partner with Keeley Co. as our first ever sponsor of the Live Inspired Podcast. Today, I'm grateful to share with you Rusty's generous heart, caring spirit + business intel that will inspire you to choose significance over success. SHOW NOTES: What's a Keeley'n? Keeley Companies are dedicated to the safety, well-being, and career growth of every employee, called Keeley'n, and continuing to strengthen the culture his father Larry Keeley instilled when starting the construction arm of the business in 1976. At 27 years old, Rusty joined the Keeley team and today is blessed to work with both his father + father-in-law. Julie Keeley, Rusty's wife of 25 years, continually inspires him to pivot success into significance including their work with World Pediatric Project, an organization that heals critically ill children around the world. Heal a child, change the world. Through WPP, the Keeley family welcome a young Jamaican boy named Ryan into their family and provided him with life-saving medical treatment, love + education. Find the opportunity: During difficult times, Rusty seeks opportunities to make an impact including partnering with the Urban League to provide tens of thousands of St. Louis families with food throughout the summer. KeeleyCares, the philanthropic arm of the business, focuses on children, health, community and education while creating a close-knit culture within the organizations. Twenty years ago, Greg Holder left corporate America because of an unyielding ache to make a difference. Since then, Greg has been lead pastor of The Crossing, non-denominational church, passionately calling tens of thousands of people from a diverse spiritual backgrounds to consider what it means to follow Jesus in today's world. Today, Greg shares how many slowly, over-time begin to lead less satisfying, less fulfilling, less hopeful lives and how to break that cycle. This conversation will remind you that your life has significance and you have the potential to change the world through your life’s impact. SHOW NOTES: Over 20 years ago, Greg left corporate after being called to be a pastor because of a longing desire to make a difference. We're living in a VUCA - volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguious - world. “People are longing for a world view that gives us a way out of a VUCA world, while acknowledging we’re in it.” Here I stand, I can do no other. Greg leans on his trusted community to collaborate when he’s being called into something more. Faith is not living in denial. Desire to flourish yet accept settling: We play it safe and surround ourselves with people exactly like us and attempt to blend in by being ghosts of ourselves because we forget we were made to make a difference. It’s not doubt that’s toxic to faith. It’s silence. By getting permission to ask hard questions, particularly in faith, Greg has been able to explore the answers, even when their may not be “answers”. “My dad left a legacy that I don’t think he fully appreciated. He set off so many chain reactions of love and goodness.” Spend less, give more. As part of Advent Conspiracy movement, thousands of people have chosen to celebrate Christmas in a counter-cultural way. Greg shares the story of a son who gifted his dad coffee beans with a note requesting they only drink the coffee together while having meaningful conversations. The open-handed generosity + hospitality Greg recieved while doing mission work around the globe has been life-changing for him. "I’ve been on the receiving end of meals that I know cost more than any meal I’ve served to a guest. That’s as humbling as it gets." Cultivate a culture of listening. In these particular days, Greg seeks to continue to learn by having conversations where truth can be spoken and where we listen to each other. Learn more about Greg Holder here. Mary Marantz would have been her family’s third generation of loggers in rural West Virginia; an impoverished life filled with days of hard, dangerous work. But, one choice Mary’s father made sparked a much different path for her: He used what little money he had to buy learning materials to prepare her for school as he saw education as her opportunity to lead a big, beautiful life of her choosing. Mary joins us today – a Yale graduate and recent author of the book Dirt: Growing Strong Roots in What Makes the Broken Beautiful – sharing what it was like to grow up in a deteriorating, single-wide trailer and, more importantly, with a father who would sacrifice it all to ensure she had a bright future. Today's conversation is beaming with resilience and hope and will inspire you to find comfort and appreciation in your roots. SHOW NOTES: Giant tin can: Mary grew up in a deteriorating single-wide trailer with a leaky roof, mushrooms growing out of the carpet and missing floorboards. One part firecracker, one part sassafrass: Mary attributes her stubborn determination to her grandma Goldie who cinderblock by cinderblock singlehandedly took down a garage on their land. Mary was healed from a lifetime of hurt and estrangement by her mother while writing her book Dirt. Mary + her father had a complex relationship but he dreamt of her life beyond rural West Virginia. Highlighting her once-shameful trailer and her father's calloused hands were symbolic and purposeful. While on the trajectory to follow in her family's logging footsteps, Mary instead became the first to attend college and went on to graduate from Yale Law School. The spark that changed a generation: At 4 years old, Mary's father wanted her prepared for kindergarten so he purchased homework books and encyclopedias on an installment plan. "I'm living proof that education and just one adult believing something better for you can change everything." Mary chose to honor her father's sacrifice by finding significance over success. Jillian Michaels is a world-renowned fitness expert, distinguished nutritionist and wellness entrepreneur. As one of the original trainers on the hit reality TV series The Biggest Loser, Jillian Michaels has built an empire in the health + wellness arena including being an 8-time New York Times bestselling author, publishing numerous successful fitness DVDs and launching the award-winning Jillian Michaels Fitness app. Today, Jillian opens up about her struggle with childhood obesity, facing ridicule from her peers and the infliction point that provided newfound confidence and triggered an appreciation for fitness to provide empowerment in all facets of life. You’ll leave this conversation with a plethora of practical tips + step-by-step instructions that will inspire your mind + body. SHOW NOTES: Her parent's divorce sent 12-year-old Jillian into a spiral where she became obese + was ridiculed by her peers until karate became a powerful, positive force in her life. With newfound confidence after her passing her 2nd Degree Black Belt test, Jillian gradually began to appreciate fitness as a means to empower people in all facets of life. "Life doesn't stop kicking you. Fight your way out of the corner." When starting on The Biggest Loser, Jillian was hesitant of this unprecedented reality television format but saw it as a "life or death intervention" for contestants that were severely obese. Commitment to change: To trigger commitment, Jillian needs 3 things to occur with clients: Hit rock-bottom. Take responsibility. Experience success. "We don't engage in destructive behaviors because we're weak, lazy or stupid. We engage in that habit because it meant our psychological survival." "He who has a why to live can bear almost any how." - Friedrich Nietzsche To find your "why", Jillian uses leading questions that ignite emotions to be a compass that wakes you from a comfortably numb state. Try this exercise: For two weeks, set an alarm to go off every hour to take inventory of what you're doing and how it makes you feel. In Jillian's formula for a healthy lifestyle, 7-8 hours of sleep is critical + uncompromisable, 12 hours a week is dedicated to emotional and physical well-being with the remainder for work + running a home. "When you fail, it's an opportunity to learn + is preparing you for the next person, place or thing waiting around the corner in life for me to be better." After failure, Jillian gives herself grace by reframing the negative as a positive, then identifies the lesson to incorporate into future growth. JILLIAN MICHAELS' LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. Join me every Monday for a quick burst of inspiration on our Live Inspired Podcast Monday Moments segment as I share this timely poem. May you know love. The kind that makes you better, that challenges you to grow. Walk in loving kindness and you will feel the invisible tether that connects us all. May you live a life of purpose. Seek knowledge from young and old. Different and same, gentle and sharp. Live with your eyes wide open. See the beauty, the goodness, the miracles but also the struggle. Dare yourself to make a difference in the world. May you notice divinity in unlikely places. May you stand in awe of the world around you. And find wisdom in both the sunshine and the rain. Pause. Breath. Listen. The trees will tell you secrets if you let them. Let them. - Unknown *** My new book IN AWE is now available... and became an instant bestseller! “The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson "It's not about you." These are the first four words of one of the bestselling books of all time. Through the principles put forward by Rick Warren in The Purpose Driven Life, we are reminded that to discover what most stirs our heart, ignites our passion and elevates our lives: We must begin with the surprising + unpopular truth that it’s not about us. In other words, to obtain the best of our lives we must... stop believing that it’s all about our lives. On Live Inspired Podcast ep. 58, Matt Emerzian shared how he went from a senior vice president at a major music marketing company working with Hollywood's elite to shifting into a life of purpose. Hear how he made this shift, the impact it’s had and what it means for you here. Want to achieve greater success, impact more deeply and savor an even better life? Want more vibrancy and joy? It turns out the greatest returns in life are rarely discovered in what we receive, but in what we give. Because, ultimately, we don’t long to be merely happy, busy or successful. We desire to be useful, honorable, and compassionate. We yearn to make a difference, to belong to a community and to share love with others. In a world as divided and negative as ours, what better time to start than now. *** My new book IN AWE is now available... and became an instant bestseller! The greatest problem with communication is we don’t listen to understand. We listen to reply. When we listen with curiosity, we don’t listen with the intent to reply. And this began long before a global pandemic. Most of us live near, worship with and socialize among individuals who are similar to us. Join me every Monday for a quick burst of inspiration on our Live Inspired Podcast Monday Moments segment. During this season of full of challenges, change and the unknown it's more important than ever to recognize that some of these difficulties can be used for new birth, reconciliation and hope for the future. Today, I share a poem written by Samuel Ullman that emphasizes the optimistic power of youth. Youth by Samuel Ullman Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life. Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite, for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust. Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing child-like appetite of what's next, and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long are you young. When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at twenty, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch the waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at eighty. *** My new book IN AWE is now available... and became an instant bestseller! Join me every Monday for a quick burst of inspiration on our “Monday Moment” segments. Today I share a story of one of my heroes, Amy Crawford. Amy is a 5th-grade teacher who has a profound way of elevating the kids in her classroom and inspiring others to recognize the meaning and power within their work. Cleaning her classroom before leaving for the weekend, Amy found a remarkable poem that would soon change her life. This poem was written by one of her troublesome students. I Am The Piece That Never Fits I am the piece that never fits. I wonder why people hate me for who I am I hear the cry of loneliness that comes from me I see my sad, strange, different self in the mirror I want someone on my side I am the piece that never fits. I pretend that words can never hurt me I feel the urge to run away from myself I touch the wet tear from my eye-rolling down my face I worry my future will be me, myself, and I I cry because I am the cheese; everyone is the mouse I am the piece that never fits. I understand that no one likes me I say that there is no place for people like me in the world I dream of a place where I actually fit in I try to make new friends, And I hope to, but still I am the piece that never fit. In time, with love, with grace, with intentional focus, by surrounding him with supportive friends and introducing him to new mentors, the little author of the poem began to fit in. And it all began with one person. One person. Today, he’s a college graduate, gainfully employed, happily married, and passionate about life. Without a doubt, he most certainly fits. If you're looking to start making a difference, certainly start at home. I also encourage you to become involved with an organization that changed my family's lives: Big Brothers Big Sisters. I recently interviewed my Little Brother Travion House on Live Inspired Podcast ep. 260. Listen to how a 10-year-old boy taught me resiliency, courage + love. *** My new book IN AWE is now available... and became an instant bestseller! "You can't always choose the path that you walk in life but you can always choose the manner in which you walk it." - John O'Leary Rebekah Gregory is a shining example of not letting circumstances define our lives. Just feet away from 2013's Boston Marathon explosion, Rebekah was severely injured and spent the next 56 days in the hospital. Yet, she and her son Noah choose not to be left shattered and instead choose to live vibrantly. Refusing to be labeled a victim, Rebekah shares the challenges she's overcome since that life-changing moment and how in the midst of overwhelming pain, there is still hope to be found on the other side of tragedy. Her resilience, faith and courage will remind you that our best days remain in front of us. SHOW NOTES: As a child, Rebekah's biological father was an Evangelic preacher yet abusive to her + her mom, teaching her to rise above trauma for a better purpose. "Obedient preacher's daughter" mask: Rebekah learned the importance of making herself happy before she could make others happy. April 15, 2013: Just three feet away from the explosion, Rebekah never lost consciousness + remembers scanning the crowd for her 5-year-old amidst detached body parts and shrapnel from the pressure cooker bombs. "I didn't want it to be it. I knew I had not lived my life in the way that I wanted to die in." For the next 56 days after the explosion, Rebekah endured surgeries every other day to help her recover. Rebekah relied on faith and her phenomenal medical team throughout her recovery believing she is here for a bigger purpose and her support system, including the medical staff. Eighteen months later, Rebekah made the courageous decision to amputate her leg - a pivotal decision that helped her move forward. "We can spend all day talking about problems but my blessings outweigh that, and so do everyone's." Although difficult, testifying against the bomber amazingly closed a chapter + birthed a whole new perspective on the tragedy. Rebekah chose to use being an amputee as a mark of survival + began doing things she never thought possible including passing the Boston Marathon finish line with her prosthetic leg "Felicia". I want to give people hope because everyone's life blows up in their face. Rebekah's Angels provides mental health treatment to children + families that have experienced trauma. Learn more here. Seventeen years ago, my wife Beth + I were seeking to make a difference in the community and could think of no better organization to serve with than Big Brothers Big Sisters. Soon after, we were connected with a little boy that would change our lives. In walked a 10-year-old boy, with a huge, goofy + joyful grin named Travion House. By serving with BBBS, we thought we'd be making a difference in someone else's life. Instead, it was our lives that were profoundly changed for the better as we were taught about resiliency, courage, love + life really looked like. Today, as our communities across the United States are fighting for equality, Travion will shine a light on where we're broken, where we've been redeemed... and how we as individuals can choose to make a difference today. This is an urgent + important conversation that will inspire you to take action + be a change agent in our world. SHOW NOTES: I found someone like me. I found people that were different. Travion grew up the youngest of six with a single mom that'd work multiple jobs just to provide. Feeling alone, he struggled in school. "I did not know how to handle my hurt. I did not know how to channel the hurt. What my actions did were say what my heart could muster up to say." Any change that happens must begin with you. Gradually, Travion improved his grades and graduated high school early. He credits his success in knowing he was loved + it gave him something to live for. "I had to break the foundation in order to lay the foundation in my own life." "Though racism is here, we don't need to respond to it in the same way we did back then." You must respond well because your response will bring forth fruit. Choose wisely. In bad soil we must sow good seeds. To somebody I wanted to hate, I showed love. There are two things you can control. The uncontrollable + the controllable. If you can control it, change it. If you can't control it, find a way to get around it. Hurt people hurt people. Healed people heal people. After watching the murder of George Floyd, Travion prayed for the police officer. Start understanding. If we understand each other's hurt, we can move forward in a better direction. Great change happens one to one. Get involved with your local Big Brothers Big Sisters chapter. Join me every Monday for a quick burst of inspiration on our “Monday Moment” segments. “A man dies when he refuses to stand up for that which is right. A man dies when he refuses to stand up for justice. A man dies when he refuses to take a stand for that which is true.” - Martin Luther King, Jr My friends, our very lives begin to end the moment we stay silent about things that matter. The only way we begin to achieve true inclusion, diversity and justice is by taking a stand against what remains an utterly broken system for so many; to see with new eyes what we’ve far too long chosen to ignore; and to raise our voice boldly, courageously, loudly against hatred - ALL hatred - spewed from both sides of disagreements. Yes, even when it means losing advantages we’ve enjoyed or status we’ve been given because of it. We do this important, life-giving work one person, one conversation, and one action at a time. We do it when we seek to understand and not simply judge. We do it when we step in with love rather than slump indifferently away in fear. This isn’t just the job of protesters, politicians, or police departments. It’s our job. And it’s time to go to work. Because a man can live when we begin to stand up for that which is right. A man can live when we choose to stand up for justice. And a man can live when we choose to take a stand for that which is true. I was silent years ago. I won’t be anymore. *** My new book IN AWE is now available... and became an instant bestseller! Learn how to rediscover your childlike sense of wonder to unleash inspiration, meaning and joy. Does your life look different than you imagined it would? In 2008, Katherine + Jay Wolf were newlyweds and parents to their six-month-old son when the unimaginable happened. Just 26 years old, Katherine suffered a massive brainstem stroke. After a rare, life-saving surgery, Katherine spent nearly two months in a coma-like state. With her faithful husband Jay by her side, Katherine had to relearn how to breathe, talk, eat... and eventually thrive. While no one wants terrible pain or unbearable tragedy, this couple is a tremendous example of finding hope in the midst of the storm. Today, Katherine + Jay Wolf remind us that suffering isn’t the end of our story, but the beginning of a new story. SHOW NOTES: At 22, Katherine + Jay tied the knot in an unusually perfect November day in Georgia before seeking adventure together in California. April 21, 2008: When their first child was just 6 months old, Katherine suffers massive brain stem stroke without any warning and does not wake up from a coma-like state for almost 2.5 months. As a stroke survivor, it was the brave surgeon who performed a meticulous 16-hour surgery that gave Katherine the ability to sustain life, in spite of some disabilities. Every year, they celebrate April 22 as Katherine's second birthday. "I can't eat. I can't walk. I can't take care of my son. I can't do anything. I'm a mistake and I should not even be here." - Katherine Wolf after failing her ninth swallow test. Our lives are all stories that have many chapters and much complexity. Fully live into the story we have, not the one we wish we had. Jay credits faith + community to lift them up in healing + beyond to flourishment. "It was a surreal vision, a waking dream, a stark reminder that perhaps in the breaking of precious things, something even more precious than we can imagine might be unleashed. Perhaps in the breaking, we can find the healing we long for." Live Inspired community member Therese asked: how do you cope with the uncertainty/fear of the future and what your health holds? Live Inspired community member Robbie asked: What advice would you give healthcare professionals - specifically those who work in the rehabilitation field? Since they credit neurosurgeon, Dr. Nestor Gonzalez, in saving Katherine's life three times, they named their second son after him. Get a copy of Katherine + Jay's latest book Suffer Strong. Join me every Monday for a quick burst of inspiration on our “Monday Moment” segments. Have you noticed it is frequently the people who say the least about themselves who have the most incredible stories to share? On this Memorial Day holiday I wanted to share one such example of a heroic, humble servant who never needed to tell you how great he was. In a world where we too frequently celebrate people based on their physical beauty, social following or professional successes, Bill Skinner reminds us what a true hero looks and acts like. [Click to tweet.] Today, make sure that the humility, sacrifice, life and death of these heroes continue to shine brightly through the lives of those of us lucky enough to live on. *** My new book IN AWE is now available... and became an instant bestseller! Shannon Miller is widely recognized as one of the iconic gymnasts of USA's Magnificent Seven 1996 Olympic team. Two decades later, she remains as one of the most decorated American gymnast in history. Yet, even the greatest of champions face uncontrollable factors -- like a rare cancer diagnosis. Today, this mother of two, author, sought-after speaker + survivor shares some of her contagious focus + determination. You'll learn her perspective on some of the most memorable moments of her gymnastics career, her devotion to advocating for women's health + how she empowers others to breakthrough personal challenges. SHOW NOTES: "I didn't realize training 6-7 hours a day wasn't normal." - Shannon on growing up in Oklahoma. Shannon credits her parents in keeping her balanced + humbled while training. At 9-years-old, Shannon idolized the older gymnasts she trained alongside before learning about Mary Lou Retton and Nadia Comăneci. "I was never one of those kids that thought 'I want to be an Olympic gold medalist.' It was always about making it to the next step. I had an important focus on what do I do today to get there." As long as you're willing to work hard, anything is possible. Just weeks away from the 1992 Olympic Trials, Shannon broke + dislocated her left elbow after a potential career-ending mistake. Instead of giving up, she focused forward + became a more well-rounded + driven athlete than before. Instead of allowing the pressure to overwhelm 15-year-old Shannon at the 1992 Olympics, she changed the narrative in her mind to use the crowd + circumstances at supportive motivation. Shannon earned two silver and three bronze medals at the 1992 Summer Olympics, securing the record for most medals won at a single Olympic Games without winning gold. Although Shannon missed out on an all-around gold medal by the closest margin in Olympic history, finishing 0.012 points shy, she only sees the positive in the accomplishment. "It's not about the medals. You give 100% + do your best." "There is no Olympic medalist that stands up on that podium alone. You don't get there by yourself." Shannon credits her not only her fellow gymnasts but the broader team of parents, coaches, physicians, teachers and community in her success. During the 1996 Olympics, Shannon was part of Magnificent Seven, recognized for their camaraderie, enthusiasm, spark + unlikely triumph in winning the first team Olympic gold medal for USA gymnastics. At 19-years-old, Shannon retired from competitive gymnastics to focus on her education. In February 2011, Shannon was diagnosed with a rare form of ovarian cancer motivating her focus on the importance of health. Live Inspired community member Jody F. asked Shannon: When was your darkest time + what would you tell someone listening trying to come back to the light? SHANNON MILLER'S LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? I'm an avid reader so I can't commit to just one. 2. What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? Focus. As a child, I was able to focus on two things: school + gymnastics. As an adult, we're pulled in a million directions, every minute, every day. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? My computer for my photos, but that's backed up. There is nothing worth going back into a burning house to get. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? My husband. 5. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? Focus your energy. Today my goal is to help one woman focus on her health. 6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? Ride the wave. Life will give you ups and downs. Hold on tight and keep going. 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? Shannon Miller is someone who focused on faith, family and doing her very best each day. *** My new book IN AWE is now available... and became an instant bestseller! This uplifting + timely conversation will remind you that the best of our days do remain in front of us. SHOW NOTES: Steven's first gig in music was with his brother at Opryland Park in Nashville, TN after high school. "A man with an experience is never at the mercy of a man with an argument." The inspiration for Steven's hit "Cinderella" came after tucking his two youngest daughters into bed - despite their protests to stay up and dance - reminding him to cherish those little, meaningful moments. Steven shares the touching story of how his oldest daughter Emily's prayers were answered when they welcomed three adopted children into their family 20 years ago. Recognizing a need, Steven + his family created Show Hope to help families with the financial burden of adopting children. Learn more about Show Hope + the over 7,000 families they've helped here. "You only have so many moments with your Cinderella." A year and a half after writing "Cinderella", 5-year-old Maria passed away in a car accident. Steven has settled that God was + is there in every dark moment of our lives. "God, at times, restrains even himself from charging in and ending every evil + wrong thing." "God wept greater than we ever could have imagined weeping because God created the life of Maria and knew the devastation." "The hope + belief that God is with us has sustained us." The Chapman family made the difficult decision to keep Maria's legacy alive by speaking of her often and even creating Maria's Big House of Hope, an orphanage that cared for thousands of children that are medically fragile in China. Steven enlisted friends Brad Paisley, Lauren Alaina and Tasha Cobbs Leonard to release "Together (We'll Get Through This)." Diane Rehm spent almost four decades on-air interviewing iconic cultural + political figures on The Diane Rehm Show, and she represents the very sound of National Public Radio. Often described as the "diva of discussions", Diane has the unique ability to own a strong opinion on matters but also the uncommon ability to remain open to other's opinions. Naturally curious to others' perspective Diane possesses an amazing combination of steeliness + vulnerability. Today, Diane opens up about her latest book When My Time Comes + the opposing arguments for + against the right-to-die. You'll also learn about her longstanding career in radio, working through crippling anxiety early in her career, how she overcame debilitating neurological voice disorder and why she sees herself as the "luckiest person". SHOW NOTES: When Diane was 19, her 49-year-old mother died from liver disease. In her last of countless trips to the hospital, she begged to die in order to be released from the pain + suffering. Eleven months later, Diane's father died of a broken heart. "We are all going to die. It's part of the life circle. Accepting that, planning for it, talking about what it is that you want at the end of life is what I am encouraging people to do." As a Serbian Orthodox, Diane felt pressure to marry an Arab just months before her mother's death. Feeling relief + freedom after her father died, Diane got a divorce. After stumbling into radio, Diane experienced severe anxiety daily for nearly 2 years until her bosses uplifting + encouraging messages gave her the confidence. Diane has interviewed countless political and cultural figures including Fred Rogers, Bill + Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. "When each person comes into the studio, what I see is not a bigger-than-life human being but rather a human being." In 1998, Diane was diagnosed with spasmodic dysphonia, a neurological condition that affects the quality of her voice. Ten years after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, Diane's husband of 54 years John Rehm expressed his need to die. For 10 days, he stopped eating, drinking + taking his medication before passing. Right-to-die advocate: Diane encourages individuals to move past the fear of death to have conversations about end-of-life care. "Find your own passion. Be open + ready to the possibilities." "He was one of if not the greatest teachers of humankind that I've seen in my lifetime." Diane shares that her interview with Fred Rogers was her most memorable interview. Listen here. Rachel shares her latest book Live Love Now and tackles the biggest challenges facing kids today and equips adults to engage them with humanness and heart, compassion and honesty to discover the deep, life-giving connection everyone is longing for. This inspiring conversation will help start your week on fire! "As parents, we can’t prevent the stress our kids experience at school or in society, but we CAN give them coping skills… we CAN allow for emotionally healthy experiences at home... we CAN emphasize meaningful measures of success despite the one the world shoves down their throat.” "In a world that looks for the quick fix, that prefers to numb the pain rather than do the work to heal, that resists the need to talk about hard things like mental health, we often walk right past ourselves and our loved ones in times of struggle. When we do, we forfeit the chance to connect, heal, and strengthen through a loving response." "The truth is not the end. The truth is the beginning." Lauren Daigle is the fastest-selling new artist in the Contemporary Christian genre of the last decade. Critically acclaimed for her unique, soulful + soaring vocals, the singer-songwriter is sincere, down-to-earth and has unwavering faith. Today, the 2-time Grammy Award winner shares how her Louisiana-roots cultivated her appreciation for music, the uplifting inspiration behind her lyrics, and how rediscovering her childlike wonder helped her find greater joy in life. Lauren also shares how she previously embraced a period of stillness amidst a whirlwind of success, how it propelled her forward into her next fruitful season + what it could mean for you during the COVID-19 pandemic. SHOW NOTES: "We're on the precipice of something extraordinary. If the whole world is still and experiencing a level of silence, great things come on the other side of those experiences." “I need to learn to love change because it is inevitable.” Lauren grew up in Lafayette, Louisiana surrounded by a culture of music, passion + creativity. Music was a formative way of learning, a way of life + a way to come out of hard, dark times. As a teenager, Lauren was homebound because of the immunocompromising virus cytomegalovirus and music became a way to stay motivated and out of depression. "Being still showed me the future." "My life experiences allow a texture, tone or an emotion to come out in my voice." After high school, Lauren helped build a church on a mission trip to Brazil. While there, she saw how religion can separate others + learned to see people for who they are versus what they believe in. "There are so many things in life that make us more alike than different." Before becoming an award-winning singer, Lauren wanted to pursue a career in doing pro-bono law for human trafficking victims. "If you're in a place in life where you have dreams, things you're hoping or longing for and they don't seem to be in close proximity, surround yourself with as much influence as you can while being diligent and persistent in the work before you." Lauren shares the meaning behind some of the lyrics to "This Girl", "Look Up Child" and "You Say". December 25, 2017: After working herself into exhaustion, and many would say at the height of her career, Lauren took close to a year off of work to "be still". Lauren relates that period to pulling back a slingshot before being propelled forward + fruitful in the next season of her life. As her world tour is on pause because of the coronavirus, Lauren again plans to get lost in the stillness to let her mind, heart + spirit be refreshed + revived. Learn more about Lauren Daigle here. My friends, the coronavirus pandemic is affecting each of us in some way. I urge you, Live Inspired community, to keep you + your loved ones happy + healthy. I want today's episode to instill some sense of normalcy and provide positivity + hope in this uncertain time. Sunday marks the 25-year anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing. Many of us were left searching for healing + hope after the deadliest domestic act of terrorism in our country's history. Two mired in darkness were Bud Welch, a father of one of the victims, and Bill McVeigh, the father of Timothy McVeigh. Before learning about the astonishing forgiveness that led to an extraordinary friendship between Bud + Bill, Jeanne Bishop shares her own transformative journey to reconciliation. Jeanne, author + law reform advocate, details what led to finding forgiveness with the murderer of her sister + brother-in-law. Today’s emotionally powerful episode will inspire you to see the hope, freedom + joy that comes from forgiveness + reconciliation. SHOW NOTES: Jeanne's Story April 7, 1990: "I'll see you tomorrow," were the last words Jeanne said to her younger sister Nancy before she was tragically murdered along with her husband + unborn child. Love is stronger than death. In Nancy's final moments, she drug herself towards her husband, using her own blood to write "Love You" which gives Jeanne peace, knowing that she died in love. Hating someone else is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die. Wanting Nancy's memory to be life-saving + life-giving, Jeanne forgave the killer in order to free herself. After 22 years, Jeanne wrote the killer a letter expressing her forgiveness + offering to visit him in prison. He wrote back sharing his remorse + showing how he grasped the enormity of his crimes, giving Jeanne justice. From murderer to friend: Jeanne has formed a bond with her family's killer, having hope + expectation that he passes along every bit of good he can do whether he's in prison the rest of his life or not. "The more I get to know them from you, the worse I feel about what I did." - Nancy's killer to Jeanne. Bill McVeigh + Bud Welch's Story: April 19, 1995: A truck bomb placed by Timothy McVeigh exploded outside Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 people including 23-year-old Julie Welch, making it the deadliest domestic terror attack in US history. Sister Roz, a Catholic nun who councils prisoners at the infamous Attica Prison, introduced Bud Welch (Julie's father) to Bill McVeigh (Timothy's father). Realizing the hate Bud harbored for Timothy was not healing him, he sought to break the cycle of retaliation, revenge and bloodshed. "Vengeance begets vengeance; hate breeds more hate. Reconciliation is altogether different; it changes us and changes the world, one human heart at a time." "We will only defeat evil with the amazing, forgiving reconciling love of God." The Survivor Tree: Julie would park under the only tree that would provide relief from the sweltering Oklahoma summers + it survived the attack. Bud sees that tree as a living symbol of Julie. Learn more about the tree here. Do you cry? Not feeling that he deserved to cry over the loss of his son, Bill finally felt free to cry after Bud acknowledged his son's humanity. "There is hope. There is light. You don’t have to be mired in darkness. You don’t have to be pinned under a rock of defeat, hate, anger + disappointment. God wants to lift you into a life of freedom + joy." Join me every Monday for a quick burst of inspiration on our “Monday Moment” segment. "Don't expect a great day; create one." [Click to tweet.] - Bob Proctor With so many restrictions on where we can go, who we can see and what we can do, it feels like we're in the movie "Groundhog Day". You know, that movie where a cynical, insolent, self-centered weatherman named Phil Connors (played perfectly by Bill Murray), is doomed to repeat the same day of his life. After days + weeks of monotony, Phil feels isolated, lost, hopeless. Today, let's not only expect a great day, but let’s strive to actually create one. I want today's episode to be that reprieve, instill some sense of normalcy and provide positivity + hope in this uncertain time. John Tesh has spent more than 45 years as a multi-faceted internationally recognized journalist, composer, broadcaster and concert pianist. Yet it's his incredible story of courage, resiliency, relentlessness, faith, achieving and humility that I gravitate towards. Join me as John shares inspirational stories + insightful wisdom on overcoming life's biggest challenges, including a terminal cancer diagnosis. Today's conversation will inspire you to move forward despite any setback you may receive in life + buy into the truth that the best of your journey remains in front of you. SHOW NOTES: "I didn't get a trophy for just participating... I tried harder because I respected my dad." John's reflects on band teacher Dr. Thomas Wagner and the importance of working the process. "Anytime I had success in my life, I was working a process and staying in a lane." Stubborn rigor: John found himself average or below average at most things. Although he didn't have the skills, he'd always find a way in. John wanted to attend a performing arts college but his father enrolled him in North Carolina State for textile engineering. Bit by the radio + television bug, John tried to drop classes but broke the honor code and was kicked out of college. For 6 months, John lived in a tent at Umstead Park in Raleigh until he got a job sweeping floors at WKIX. 36 months later, John was anchoring news in New York City. 'Show up and don't take no for an answer.' Be found ready. While developing film at WTBD, John would memorize + recite news scripts, one day earning an on-air anchor spot. "I always felt failure was chasing me. I was developing the skills so if they had to lay me off, they'd be laying off four people." Visualization has been important in many aspects of John's life including his iconic concert at Red Rocks. "Pick a lane and don't let anyone take you out of that lane." Beyond visualization, credits Romans 4:17 in speaking your future into existence. John tells how he fell in love with his wife of 28 years, Connie Sellecca, and her disciple and honor. May 3, 2015: John was diagnosed with a rare form of prostate cancer and credits divine healing to his recovery. Each morning, John visuals his day, practices gratefulness and speaks to his pain about God. When writing Relentless, John would write a chapter and have Connie read it back while editing. Join me every Monday for a quick burst of inspiration on our “Monday Moment” segment. "Whatever you water grows. Whatever you pay attention to and focus on gets bigger. Attend to what you want, not what you fear or despise." – Dr. Henry Cloud There is no denying that we're in the midst of a crisis. Don't believe me? Turn on your nightly news. Yet, a bit of context around our media is important to understand. In 2017, Harvard Business Review reported that 19 out of 20 stories shared by the media are negative... and that's unemployment was at all-time lows and markets at historic highs, not during the midst of a global pandemic. We know that what we focus on grows in our consciousness so it's expected that depression + isolation will rise, triggered by the 24-hour negative news cycle. And yet, there is so much good in this world. Today, let's focus on that. We can choose to not only can flatten the curve but create a movement that reminds the world: In spite of today’s adversity, there are helpers showing up, there’s reason for hope and there remains certainty that the best is yet to come. [Click to tweet.] In the midst of a 24-hour negative news cycle blaring how lousy the world is, we want to counter with messages of individuals, families and entire communities choosing to Live Inspired Together. And I need your help! Send me examples of individuals in your community taking positive action to make things better. It could be your spouse cutting the grass for an elderly neighbor or your cousin beginning a food drive for those in need. It could a story you read about a billionaire donating a 737 packed with supplies heading for NY or a video you watched of a child donating their allowance. From families singing on their decks to individuals cheering for health care workers – forward your favorite stories over to podcast@johnolearyinspires.com! We’ll be showcasing some of them on a video very soon. Cathy Heller is igniting a movement of helping people everywhere find a deeper sense of purpose and encouraging us to make a soulful contribution to the world. In addition to being a wife + mother, Cathy is a business + life coach, musician, author and host of the wildly popular Don't Keep Your Day Job podcast. When I first asked Cathy to meet with me, I expected to spend the majority of our time sharing her expertise on how to shift into more meaningful, fulfilling work. And then life happened... the world is now in a radically different place and yet I find this a divine appointment. Cathy often says “purpose is the opposite of depression” and she is truly lifting up others to be the happiest version of themselves. Today, Cathy shares her story of courageously taking control of her destiny and how you can, too. SHOW NOTES: Growing up, Cathy was surrounded by trauma, violence and instability - leading her to question her worth. As an aspiring singer-songwriter, Cathy moved to Los Angeles + landed a record deal before being dropped a few months later. She viewed this as validation to just "grow up, get a job + be unhappy." Is there any other way I can do music? Unhappy selling commercial real-estate, Cathy learned that songwriters license music for film, TV + advertisements. For a decade, Cathy wrote songs for popular shows including The Office, SNL and Parks and Rec, plus brands including Coca-Cola, American Airlines. McDonald's and Old Navy. Using her personal expertise + experience, Cathy began offering online classes for aspiring songwriters that evolved into a significant revenue stream. Encouraged by the success of her online courses, Cathy launched the Don't Keep Your Day Job podcast that inspires listeners to find more purpose in their life and get paid to do what they love full-time by interviewing creative entrepreneurs on their success. "We are sitting on a gold. What we are missing is seeing the possibility. We're missing momentum which only comes from taking action." "There are so many special, holy people in the world. If you dig long enough you'll weed your way through the people with an agenda and you'll find the real ones." You're a masterpiece. You are a piece of the master. We need you. God doesn't make extras. Those powerful words from Rabbi David Aaron ignited Cathy's calling. "The opposite of depression is not happiness. The opposite of depression is purpose + belonging." "Everybody will say all the reasons why something won't work and the entrepreneur finds the one reason it will. That's true also about people of faith." Cathy sees hope that the coronavirus pandemic will be a gift and an opportunity to emerge more fulfilled + happier. Pivot into seeing the possibilities instead of succumbing to fear. Life is 10% what happens and 90% how you deal with it. Cathy's grandmother overcame the Holocaust + the Depression and chose to look for the possibilities. In today's turbulent + uncertain world, Cathy encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to start with what's possible + take action. Stop to feel it, give yourself compassion, take action. Cathy stresses the importance of learning to self-regulate, being mindful of our feelings + mental wellbeing as the first step in seeing possibilities. Cathy has hope that the current state of the world is an opportunity to unify + support others. Listen to Cathy Heller's podcast Don't Keep Your Day Job. What is the best book you’ve ever read? Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse, Full Catastrophe Living by Jon Kabat-Zinn and The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron. 2. What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? Trust. I trust the world, my abilities + my business but I don't think I trust that I'm seen + loved by my husband because of what I've been through. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? My computer because I love being able to encourage others. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? My grandfather Ben, my mom's dad. He died right before I was born and I've always felt he's watching over me. 5. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? My grandma would say, "Before you do something, think what someone else woke up with today." 6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? You are going to be okay. You have a huge role to play in the world and please know you're more than enough exactly how you are. 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? Cathy made me believe that I had so much value and because of that I gave to others and lifted them. Dick started chasing his dream of being a college coach by coaching junior high. What is it that allows a failing team to become one that is successful? The leader has to set the tone. "I want to be everybody's friend. I look for the good in people." Today I welcome back Gregg Easterbrook, New York Times bestselling author + guest on one of the most popular Live Inspired Podcast episodes of all time. When Gregg joined us in January 2019, the market, health + longevity were at all-time highs, unemployment at all-time lows and really no reason for fear... Yet we were drowning in fear. My friends, as we are inundated with fear-driven headlines + media coverage about the coronavirus, Gregg once again reminds us that the world is better than it looks. Today's conversation is packed with reassuring fact-based optimism that will inspire a positive perspective during today's pandemic... and whatever challenges tomorrow may bring. SHOW NOTES: Pollution, discrimination, rate of heart disease + cancer are trending down. Life expectancy, education, living standards, middle-class income, human freedom are trending up. "Being an optimistic is not being a Pollyanna. A Pollyanna believes there are no problems. An optimist believes that problems can be solved." "I’m optimistic that we can fix the coronavirus and whatever problem comes after it.” As Gregg is doing his part to defeat the coronavirus, he remains optimistic by looking at the recent history of similar problems and their outcomes. The further you look back in history, the more optimistic you become that the current strategies will work. Gregg recalls 1968's devastating Hong Kong Flu and notes that none of the public health steps that are being taken today were taken then. "The stock market is going to take care of itself. Every past big decline in the stock market including in 1929 has corrected itself and became a gain within 1-2 years." How can I have optimism, happiness and social connectivity during the coronavirus pandemic? Acclaimed happiness expert Shawn Achor reminds us that it’s in the darkest times that we need optimism, gratitude and social connection the most. After spending 12 years at Harvard earning dozens of distinguished teaching awards, Shawn went on to become a New York Times bestselling author of The Happiness Advantage and Big Potential, deliver a TEDx with over 19 million views and work with 30+ Fortune 100 companies. Today, Shawn joins me to talk about coronavirus and what you can do to be happy and feel connected during this season of unprecedented adversity. You’ll leave today’s conversation with research-based reasoning to be optimistic and 3 practical tips to increase during any season of uncertainty. SHOW NOTES: During high school, Shawn recalls the Branch Davidians + how the Waco siege gave him insight and compassion for people trying to understand conflicts. Shawn is fascinated by how some people can rise out of a challenge and use it to propel them forward while it can paralyze others. As a volunteer firefighter, Shawn unexpectedly was accepted to Harvard and granted a military scholarship. His admission essay focused on his hunger to expand his small world and how he'd want to remind his peers how privileged they were. Expectations affect gratitude: Quickly, Shawn recognized that many of his peers' expectations were met in attending Harvard and didn't experience the same level of gratitude because his acceptance was not expected. Rather than embracing the gift of the moment, we often are too focused on looking forward. While doing research on Harvard, Shawn saw that success wasn't yielding happiness because your brain adjusts to what the goal is. Does success = happiness? If people become happier, raise their gratitude for the present, deepen social networks or raise their levels of optimism, then success rates rise dramatically. "Happiness during good times is more of a luxury item. When things get difficult, happiness has an even more beneficial effect." "In the darkest times is when we need optimism, gratitude and social connection the most." "Happiness is not irrational optimism." "Optimism allows your brain to be the most adaptive possible when the negative occurs." Rational optimism: starts with a realistic assessment of the present but maintains the belief that eventually my behavior will matter if linked to the right people. While teaching and researching happiness, Shawn courageously shared he was battling depression. While battling depression, Shawn learned that the majority of our happiness is interconnected with each other. In his book Big Potential, Shawn shares groundbreaking University of Virginia research on how our very perception of reality is transformed by the presence of others. If someone who is genetically predisposed to pessimism can make small tweaks to their day, they can experience impactful change. Three practical tips to increase optimism, happiness and social connectivity: Each day, practice scanning for 3 new things that happened in the last 24 hours that you're grateful for. When anything positive happens, jot it down on a piece of paper, throw them in a bowl and read back through them at a later date. Take a few minutes to send a positive message, email or text to someone which will create a ripple effect and a reciprocal loop. "Happiness is not the belief that we don’t need to change; it is the realization that we can." Get Shawn Achor's New York Times bestselling books Big Potential, The Happiness Advantage and Before Happiness. To combat all this negativity and fear around coronavirus and the other uncertainty we face, I created a 21-day challenge to inspire our community to focus on what they can control and to remain ferociously optimistic that their best remains ahead. It's hard to believe it's been four years since my first national bestselling book On Fire hit bookshelves. Since then, it's sold more 200,000 copies, been translated into more than a dozen languages and touched, impacted + elevated lives across the world... but it's individual stories of impact that ignite me the most. To celebrate, I want to share two stories On Fire has blessed me with in the last four years. The first being one of the countless experiences that dramatically touched me and the second being a question I am frequently asked about the many stories featured in the book. I hope that today's episode will remind you of the gift and liberating freedom of unconditional love. SHOW NOTES: Like my mom, I share how one dad chose love, crediting On Fire. After his daughter read On Fire, she's convinced and convicted in choosing life. "I didn't write On Fire to be on airport bookshelves. I wrote On Fire to remind one person at a time that they have the ability to change the world." "It's not called On Fire because I got burned. It's called On Fire because of every single thing that happened after the explosion. It's a reminder of grace." Is this good enough for me to stay the same? This is the life-saving question Laura McKowen, author of We Are the Luckiest + one of the foremost voices in the modern recovery movement, asked herself. From a horrific DWI to the painful incident that left her 4-year-old daughter in danger, Laura shares her personal journey in choosing sobriety with the utmost vulnerability + candor. But this is more than just one person's journey of using addiction as an invitation to living more intentionally. Today's powerful and thought-provoking conversation will inspire you to practice self-forgiveness and free yourself of shame and guilt. SHOW NOTES: Writing a letter to "2012 Laura": Laura started blogging about her journey to sobriety, not for others but to heal herself. During her college going-away party, Laura recalls freely drink around her family and how the buzz finally allowed her to cope with the struggles she was facing. Laura would chase opportunities and social situations to drink and even gravitated towards a career in the booze-laden advertising industry. While not always problematic, drinking allowed Laura be free and get the love + attention she wanted. The wake-up call: It wasn't after a horrific DWI, but when Laura left her 4-year-old daughter alone in a hotel room overnight that Laura knew she had to make a change. The natural question with alcohol addiction is “Is this bad enough that I have to change?” but Laura feels the question should be "Is this good enough for me to stay the same?", followed by "Are you free?" "My worst nightmares happened and I created them." Laura shares how she's been able to move past shame + guilt towards mercy. Our pain, obstacles, and struggles are invitations to a bigger life. If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you. If you do not bring forth what is within you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you. - Gospel of Thomas Be honest: Laura encourages those struggling with addiction to share their struggle with another person. Relationships are hard. Amber + Guy Lia, owners of faith-and family-friendly production company Storehouse Media Group, join us to share practical advice on some of the most common issues that trigger friction in partnerships. Married for 14 years, Amber + Guy are proof that a typical couple can break the reactionary cycle of outbursts and embrace the opportunity for growth as individuals and as a couple. Whether it's poor communication, busy schedules, different parenting styles, or another culprit, this husband-wife team offers easy-to-apply advice to counter adverse reactions to these triggers. Today's conversation will offer hope that anger + frustration can shift into peace + joy -- and it's not as hard as you think! SHOW NOTES: Find a rhythm that works for you. To balance writing with raising their four children, Guy + Amber carved dedicated time to work together by waking up at 2 a.m. Although Amber's first childhood memories were positive, she recalls dark periods which she attributes to her parents being raised in a strict separatist cult. “In the midst of all the conflict, my parents were incredibly devoted and exceedingly generous.” Guy’s parents were in a car accident when he was a child, causing conflicts in their relationship. After a massive heart attack, his parents learned a new way to love each other and present a better model of parenting. "I thought I was getting Prince Charming and he thought he was getting Princess Perfect and we were both falling short of that idea." From marriage to parenting within three months: Not having an opportunity to solidify the foundation of their friendship and marriage relationship caused stumbling blocks early in their marriage. Having been around kids her entire life, Amber did not expect the internal identity crisis she faced. Triggers will always be there. Stop reacting in anger and frustration, and start responding in more gentle, Biblical responses. When you're no longer friends... To rediscover why she fell in love with Guy, Amber wrote down one thing that she appreciated and valued about him. When you're weary and exhausted... being involved in their community eases the burdens Amber + Guy carries. When your marriage ebbs and flows... commit to "check-ups" with your significant other once or twice a month to openly communicate needs and problems. "Being proactive in our marriages prevents us from being reactive in our marriages." "Making our spouses happy is not our job but should be our delight." "Some of our biggest marriage triggers don't result from what we do but from what we neglect to do." "There is nothing anger can do that love can't do better" Get a copy of Amber and Guy Lia's book Marriage Triggers here.
