Guled Mire is a policy advisor, and writer, speaker and community advocate ~ On the podcast, we’ve talked about topics like slacktivism from an academic perspective. We’ve discussed the Christchurch Principles and ideas like freedom of speech and democracy online. But in this episode, we’re chatting to someone who lives and breathes activism, both in our material world and in our online spaces. Guled Mire is a Fulbright Scholar and a Fellow at the Cornell Institute for Public Affairs. He is senior policy advisor by profession and a writer, speaker and community advocate in his spare time. Guled uses his platform and profile to facilitate courageous conversations about racism and discrimination in New Zealand and to discuss the things we need to do to build a truly inclusive, welcoming society. Guled is a big fan of having open conversations about mental health and is a founding member of the Third Culture Minds Charitable Trust, which supports young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds to get the support they need. In this episode, Guled gives us insight as to what it’s like to be an activist in the online space. Where does he think the online space is most powerful? Why is having access to other people and businesses meaningful - and why can it also be dangerous? How can people be effective allies to support marginalised people in the online space? What’s it like to show up as an individual and present views that challenge and outright go against the status-quo? Trigger warning: this conversation does discuss the Christchurch mosque attacks. Guled uses an example in this episode that references the Crusaders - and for anyone who is not from New Zealand, you’ll likely be able to deduce this from the story Guled tells - but just for added context, the Crusaders were, and somewhat controversially still are, the local rugby team of Christchurch. Rumya Putcha is an assistant professor at the University of Georgia, whose research interests centre around post-Enlightenment, colonial and anti-colonial thought ~ Are you someone who has donned your Lulu's, put on the self-timer, struck a yoga pose and captured a photo to post on Instagram, maybe without even going a class? Have you ever added a motivational quote or hash-tagged the word namaste under said Instagram post? Perhaps you're more like me, a casual observer whose feed delivers a steady stream of ubiquitous aspirational yoga imagery. Whenever you see it, you can't help but feel a tug of inadequacy - because in our online sphere in particular, yoga imagery has become a symbol for female empowerment. Discipline. Self-care. Enlightenment. A commitment to reaching for a higher calling. But have you ever stopped to ask - why does so much of the imagery and aspirational ideals surrounding yoga centre white women (often young, conventionally attractive white women)? What is the pull of the pose on social media? What are the people who partake in yoga culture online trying to signal? And is it possible that some good intentions fall flat..? Today's guest is Rumya Putcha, an assistant professor of women's studies and music at the University of Georgia. Her research interests centre on post-Enlightenment, colonial and anti-colonial thought, particularly around constructs of citizenship, race, gender, sexuality, the body, and the law. I discovered Rumya's work after a friend sent me one of her blog posts entitled, Yoga and the Maintenance of White Womanhood. In that article, Rumya unpacks how yoga imagery and yoga puns have become a signaller for white virtue, inclusiveness, and an individual spirituality that cannot be criticised. She explores why this is a damaging and concerning trajectory - and in this episode, we explore these ideas further in conversational form. Topics include virtue signalling, appropriation, namaste puns, neoliberalism, the colonisation of yoga, the performance of spirituality, spiritual bypassing and more. Shownotes: Find out more about Rumya's professional work here, or to have your mind blown, take a look around her blog, Namaste Nation. Tweet your thoughts to @SelfieReflect

I am so excited to share my interview with Heather Erickson. Heather is a wife, mom, Bible teacher, author and worship leader. Heather is also a co-founder of The Chara Project, a ministry to help women of all faiths learn to study the Bible. Heather shares her insights on how you can find joy in the Bible as well as lead your children to Christ. Find Joy in the Bible Heather starts off sharing how her parents’ love of the Bible made it easier for her to want to know the Bible and its teachings for herself. She candidly discusses how at one point she questioned everything. Eventually, Heather said she read a scripture about loving God with all your heart, soul and mind. She dug in deep and realized when she loved Jesus with everything, she couldn’t turn away. She said of this experience, “It took me being willing to walk away from what my parents believed, step into faith for myself, and say, ‘Do I believe what they have brought me up to believe?’ I see it embodied. I see it completely lived out. Am I willing to actually back it up? And when I backed it up with my heart, my soul and my mind, that’s when I realized, this is the real deal.” Lead Children to Jesus Her parents love of the Bible and their example of living its teachings set the foundation. As a result, Heather points out how her parents let her spread her wings and also find out for herself. From her experience with her own parents, Heather shares advice to parents. She says to never give up, do the foundational things and let children navigate for themselves. Towards the end of the episode, Heather shares what she has learned from teaching her children from the Bible. She agrees that many times the teaching happens in everyday moments. Heather also talks about how studying the Bible herself has helped the teachings to be anchored deep in her heart. Understanding the why of the Bible and not just a checklist of things to do has helped her go from mom fails to mom wins in teaching spiritual things. The Chara Project Heather has been involved doing Bible studies with women of varying faiths in Utah for many years. She and two of her friends wanted to create a safe place to ask questions and help women learn for themselves. The Chara Project was born The word “Chara” is a Greek word meaning “joy.” Since Heather and the other co-founders believe joy is what you get when you understand the Bible, the word fit perfectly. After choosing the word Chara, Heather and her co-founders discovered they could also use the word as an acronym to teach a simple method of studying the Bible. Listen the episode for all the details of the acronym but here is what each letter stands for: C – Context H – History A – Author R – Read A – Apply Using Different Bible Translations I really loved the discussion Heather and I had about using different translations of the Bible. Heather explained that reading different translations is like looking words up in a thesaurus. Varied translations open up your understanding and help paint a better picture of what God is teaching. Partner with God Heather believes that aligning her heart to God allows her to have a closer relationship with Him. This relationship with God is something she believes she can mirror to the people around her, including her kids. Above all, Heather wants her children to see Christ through her and that journey has started with finding joy in the Bible. Relationships are hard. Amber + Guy Lia, owners of faith-and family-friendly production company Storehouse Media Group, join us to share practical advice on some of the most common issues that trigger friction in partnerships. Married for 14 years, Amber + Guy are proof that a typical couple can break the reactionary cycle of outbursts and embrace the opportunity for growth as individuals and as a couple. Whether it's poor communication, busy schedules, different parenting styles, or another culprit, this husband-wife team offers easy-to-apply advice to counter adverse reactions to these triggers. Today's conversation will offer hope that anger + frustration can shift into peace + joy -- and it's not as hard as you think! SHOW NOTES: Find a rhythm that works for you. To balance writing with raising their four children, Guy + Amber carved dedicated time to work together by waking up at 2 a.m. Although Amber's first childhood memories were positive, she recalls dark periods which she attributes to her parents being raised in a strict separatist cult. “In the midst of all the conflict, my parents were incredibly devoted and exceedingly generous.” Guy’s parents were in a car accident when he was a child, causing conflicts in their relationship. After a massive heart attack, his parents learned a new way to love each other and present a better model of parenting. "I thought I was getting Prince Charming and he thought he was getting Princess Perfect and we were both falling short of that idea." From marriage to parenting within three months: Not having an opportunity to solidify the foundation of their friendship and marriage relationship caused stumbling blocks early in their marriage. Having been around kids her entire life, Amber did not expect the internal identity crisis she faced. Triggers will always be there. Stop reacting in anger and frustration, and start responding in more gentle, Biblical responses. When you're no longer friends... To rediscover why she fell in love with Guy, Amber wrote down one thing that she appreciated and valued about him. When you're weary and exhausted... being involved in their community eases the burdens Amber + Guy carries. When your marriage ebbs and flows... commit to "check-ups" with your significant other once or twice a month to openly communicate needs and problems. "Being proactive in our marriages prevents us from being reactive in our marriages." "Making our spouses happy is not our job but should be our delight." "Some of our biggest marriage triggers don't result from what we do but from what we neglect to do." "There is nothing anger can do that love can't do better" Get a copy of Amber and Guy Lia's book Marriage Triggers here. Today I had the pleasure of talking to celebrity chef, filmmaker, and all around great guy, Pete Evans. He co-hosts the #1 show in Australia, My Kitchen Rules which is in its 10th season and is shown in 160 countries. He’s written a ton of books and cookbooks, he’s created the show The Paleo Way, and has a great podcast called Recipes For Life. You may know him from the documentary The Magic Pill, which everyone listening has probably already seen on Netflix. He’s an amazing, positive force in Australia and the world, and it may not be apparent from our brief talk. We only had an hour so I’m going to have him on again because there’s so much more to get into. I’ll get a better recording situation next time. You’ll notice the quality wasn’t so great due to the recording service we were forced to use. A lot to enjoy in this episode though - he brings up some really creepy stuff about the dietitians association of Australia colluding to discredit and silence himself and a prominent doctor who advocate for people to lower sugar in their diet. Absurd, but true. These are the last few days you can pre-order the Food Lies film on Indiegogo. We really need your help to get this finished. We’re not taking any outside funding and have so far used much of our own time, money, and resources. It’s really coming out fantastic, and I can’t wait to share it with the world. Pre-ordering is the only way to have your own copy and share it with family and friends and you’ll get it a couple months early. It’s also the best way to show your support for this podcast and getting this information out there. I really appreciate all the support so far and can’t thank this awesome community enough. Price - has he been mentioned every episode? The power of an ancestral diet is undeniable - changes unfolded in real time on film as people got off their diabetes medication and got healthier The trial of Professor Tim Noakes (listen to Prof. Noakes in episode 3) was going on at the same time so they decided to film that as well Dr. Gary Fettke has also been silenced by the dieticians in Australia. He’s an orthopedic surgeon who cuts off limbs due to diabetes yet he was silenced for telling patients to avoid sugar Had great stories from Nina Teicholz, Joel Salatin, and Lierre Keith (all friends of Food Lies film/this podcast) Original cut of Magic Pill was more controversial and inflammatory but Pete wasn’t comfortable with that The president of the Australian Medical Association called it a dangerous film and tried to get it taken off of Netflix. He’s now been replaced… He’s working with Dr. gary Fettke to get the dietary guidelines changed in Australia Dr. Gary Fettke got ahold of some internal files showing Dietitians Association colluding with multinational food organizations to have himself, Pete, and other members of the paleo community silenced or discredited The more films and information about ancestral eating, the better Carnivore movement - Shawn Baker and Mikhaila Peterson - it’s good to fight against the vegan propaganda and prove meat isn’t harmful, but in fact beneficial Pete put up a $1 million bet if those dietitians can prove that the grass fed, grass finished steak and vegetables he served his family for dinner can be proven to be harmful As a chef, why would you use the blandest foods in your cooking? The pasta, the bread, the plain starches that add no nutritional value or flavor. Instead you can use the most nutrient dense and delicious foods possible - all the low carb foods Nora Gedgaudas and her life changing book for Pete, Primal Body Primal Mind https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/9571633-primal-body-primal-mind They went on a speaking tour together over the course of 2 years Food should be something you can eat straight from nature, full of nutrients and flavor. How can we implement a change even in the school system where kids are taught what to eat and how to cook? Do you wrestle with the hot topic issues in our culture? Do have a hard time wrapping your own mind around them? Are you looking for ways to start having these conversations with your children of any age? If you answered yes to any of those questions, this is an episode we hope you will find very helpful. Leila Miller, our guest, considers this day and time an age of unreason. Far too many issues of the day are looked at and judged using human feelings in the name of mercy. We need to use our reason and most importantly, we need to teach our children to use theirs. The understanding of the objective truths in today’s tough moral issues will keep us rooted in Christ, our Catholic faith, and freed from the yoke of secular slavery. Please consider financially supporting our Podcast Our Guest: Co-author of Made This Way: How to Prepare Kids to Face Today’s Tough Moral Issues (with Trent Horn), Leila Miller worked in advertising before becoming a wife and stay-at-home mom. From home, she wrote a regular editorial column for The Arizona Republic before starting her blogs, Little Catholic Bubble and LeilaMiller.net. Leila is active on facebook and has been featured on Catholic television, radio, and in print. Her previous two books, Primal Loss: The Now-Adult Children of Divorce Speak and Raising Chaste Catholic Men, address in simple terms the Church’s timeless teachings on marriage, family, and the moral education of children. She and her husband Dean have eight children and several grandchildren. Scripture – “I appeal to you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” – Romans 12:1-2 Saint Quote – “It is Jesus who stirs in you the desire to do something great with your lives, the will to follow an ideal, the refusal to allow yourselves to be ground down by mediocrity, the courage to commit yourselves humbly and patiently to improving yourselves and society, making the world more human and more fraternal.” – St. Pope John Paul ii
My business coach asked me to make a list of 3 women I admire at the beginning of the year, and the various reasons why I look up to them. Two of them were women in the online business space, and the third was a personal friend of mine, Meg Schweitzer. When I was prepping for this interview, I went back to look at what I had written about Meg: Unapologetic about who she is and the career she chose and owning it. Amazing mom to the sweetest/best kids Making self care a priority, being strong/lots of muscle, and not losing sight of her own identity. Highly prioritizes relationship with her husband. Immense strength and resilience, physically and emotionally We get into ALL of these in the interview. I have so much respect for Meg, and can't wait for you to get to know her! Megan have known each other for years through our partners, and she's mom to daughter Ryleigh (age 9) and son Klaus (age 5), and is a high school teacher and wrestling coach. WHERE IT ALL STARTED Meg chose to start wrestling back in high school (for a very surprising reason!) and wrestled from 1996 - 2008. She was the first female to win OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association) a total of 4 times, competed on the world team for Canada from 2005 - 2007, is a fifteen time national medalist, won the bronze medal at the Pan American Games in Brazil in 2007 and was the alternate at the Olympics in Beijing in 2008. PERSONAL LIFE, BODY IMAGE, & GRATITUDE Meg and I talk about everything from her relationship with the scale over the years and how that's translated to her current life, how she wants to parent her kids to have a healthy relationship with food, exercise and their bodies, and some of the biggest areas of her life that she prioritizes on a daily basis to show up as the best version of herself. Given our shared love of lifting heavy weights, it was especially fun to have Meg explain how she embraces being a woman, her feminine side and making muscular sexy. She breaks down the misconception that continues to linger that women have about getting bulky and looking like a male if they lift weights. What I love most about this interview is how Meg's pure appreciation for life shines through, and is such a great reminder to treasure every moment and make the most of the lives we've been given, along with the bodies that carry us through it. There is so much packed into this interview, I can't wait for you to listen. Spoiler: by the end of the interview she had me crying. Today's guest is breaking down how to build new habits from the ground up for any area you're trying to shift, whether it's a eating healthier, a new workout routine, or quitting smoking. Executive Health Coach, Elizabeth Shermanshares her powerful personal journey through some health struggles, how she found total health for herself, and how she coaches high functioning executives, and entrepreneurs to change their life using simple and sustainable habits. Elizabeth has an incredibly interesting story with switching careers, to selling everything to liver permanently in Mexico. One of the best parts of this episode was the section around Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Elizabeth covers some of the main areas that we can use to re-program ourselves with new habits by modifying unconscious routines and old belief systems we may have had in place for years without realizing it This is a tool that can make all the difference to building new habits and breaking old ones that are no longer serving us. Elizabeth teaches us the full cycle that NLP dives into, including that the words that we use matter, our experiences dictate our thoughts, and that there are logical levels of change: 1. Environment 2. Behaviours 3. Capability 4. Beliefs & Values 5. Identity The way Elizabeth explains it, we will continue to sabotage ourselves until our identity is in full alignment with our goals, both subconscious and conscious. Some of the other major takeaways from this episode: The hormonal impact of our food choices, sleep, and exercise on the other areas of our life. Why our bodies become more sensitive to our environments with age and what to do about it Learning how to understand the way our bodies communicate to us How to use a fictional version of your future self to help guide your desired behaviours Can't wait for you to hear this one, it's totally fascinating to see how deep we can dig to change our habits successfully and re-program old beliefs. I'd love know ONE habit that you are going to try and change by applying what Elizabeth taught around Neuro-Linguistic Programming! Self care is becoming a bit of a buzz word lately, and the first thing we tend to think of when we hear about it is massages and bubble baths. Some of us don't like baths, and both of those activities are costly in either time, money or both. It's not something that the average person has time for on a daily basis. That's why I was so excited when I hopped on the phone with my fellow #girlboss friend Brittany of Wild Woman Strong a couple of months ago when she started telling me about her latest and greatest idea. She had come up with 12 Pillars of Self Care, and they break down self care in a way that makes you realize how simple it can be to add in regularly. Not only is Brittany my own go-to person when it comes to self care, she's always coming up with new and manageable ways for women to fit a little self-care love into everyday life, and her 12 Pillars say it all. Brittany makes self care inclusive and available to anyone, with any budget and any amount of time (or lack thereof) on their hands, and honestly? This list makes self-care seem much less abstract and out of reach. The way she has categorized self-care is a remarkable example of what happens with a little attention is paid to the small details in our lives that we might be overlooking, and how we can make self-care an everyday occurrence for maximum benefit, rather than a special indulgence when we're lucky. According to Brittany, here are the 12 Pillars of a balanced self-care routine: SOUL Practicing Presence Practicing Gratitude + Kindness Practicing Discomfort MIND Maintenance Learning Creation BODY Sleep + Rest Nourishment + Hydrat ion Movement CONNECTION Yourself Others Mother Nature Brittany also shares with us some of her personal story and how self care become so crucial in her own life, including a serious bout of depression. For the full story, check out this podcast interview on my former podcast Fit & Nourished Mind with my co-host Kate. We interviewed Brittany in episode #21 and it remained our most downloaded interview ever! This girl is a nomadic strength coach and yoga teacher originally from Chicago, IL now living in the Netherlands, and she created Wild Woman Strong to encourage women on how to build effective self-care routines so they can feel strong and empowered to tackle any adventure they choose. I'm going to be part of Brittany's brand newSelf-Care Mentorship program found in the show notes, and will be sharing my full experience afterwards. Apps, right? Who needs 'em anyway? I have to be totally honest, never did I think I would do a post about apps. I've never been much of an app person and kind of scoffed when I would see people flipping past pages of them on their phones. But, in the past year or two I've come around and now find myself depending on a handful that actually improve my quality of life from my physical health and mental well being, to continuing to help me learn and grow every single day. I wanted to share this list so that you can take advantage of them as well. Bear in mind I have an iPhone, so if you are using an Android or different type of phone, these exact apps *may* not be available. 1.Moment Some information has indicated that we pick up our phones an average of 150 times per day. That's a clear indication of how attached we are to our devices a lot more than we need to be and that's where this little app comes in handy! The Moment app tracks phone usage, including the number of times you pick up your phone in a day, how long you spend on it each time you pick it up, and total time spent on it in a 24 hour period. Plus, it can even give you an exact breakdown of which apps you're spending your time on. Yes, it might seem a little scary, but it's a huge wake-up call. It forces you to take responsibility for your time, and no more making excuses about being too busy or having no time when the app is showing that you spent 3 hours scrolling Instagram yesterday. Yes, that's a real-life example - this is why I use the app to keep myself in check! However, on my now more limited IG time, I'd love to connect over @emilygoughcoach,it's still definitely my favourite place to hang out. 2. HRV4Training This is a paid app, and it's a bit pricey. I would rarely ever bother spending money on an app, but in this case, it's been completely worth it. I first heard about the app a couple of years ago and it tracks your heart rate variability to help you determine correlations around the physiological effects of different kinds of stressors. What I love about it is that it's a great tool to give tailored feedback and help people better learn to listen to their bodies, and when used over time, it can help you pinpoint particular factors that change your heart rate variability and affect your physiology. How it works: The app utilizes your camera, which means you don't have to use a chest strap or anything like that. Hold your finger over the camera for 60 seconds when prompted, breathing normally. Measurements are best done first thing in the morning. You'll then be asked a short series of questions about your workout the pervious day (or rest), stress levels, mental and physical energy, menstrual cycle and stress. It will even ask about things like sleep quality and quantity, along with consumption of alcohol or if you've been travelling, all of which have an enormous impact on our health. The app will then give you a rating that, once you have a baseline established, will help you determine if you should do a tough workout, take it easy, or recharge your batteries as much as possible. It's best used over time for optimal results, if you're going to spend the money on it I would definitely suggest using it every morning if you can. Such a cool tool and I've found it to be incredibly helpful! You can find more info about the app here, including all of the various types of measurements, and how you can use it to your benefit to support your health (and training.) 3. Insight Timer This is officially my favourite meditation app. It's simple, user-friendly, and easy to navigate, with thousands of totally free meditations at your fingertips. I love how the app has broken things down and cross-referenced meditations so that you can search according to: Length of time (anywhere from 1 minute to 60+ minutes) Guided vs. silent or music only Topics, such as abundance, body image, overcoming fear, anxiety, forgiveness, & strength and resilience Teacher This is especially helpful if you're struggling with a particular issue, are short on time and don't want to dig through pages of meditations to find one that will fill a couple of free minutes you're able to squeeze in, or if you find a particular teacher that really speaks to you and you want to see what other meditations they offer. My personal favourite right now is Sarah Blondin, she has an unusual and beautiful story-telling style of meditation that's incredibly calming. While I don't meditate every single day (yet), I usually take advantage of the practice at least 3 - 4 times per week. I highly recommend it, it's an incredibly gentle way to start the day, or can help you calm down in a stressful situation. 4. Tabata Stopwatch Pro If you're not familiar with tabata-style workouts, they're generally 20 seconds of work and 10 seconds of rest. Seems easy, right? I can assure you that you will be breaking a sweat in under 5 minutes, ha! However, I don't often perform actual tabata workouts. Instead, this is a really handy timer that can be set to allow for warm-up, working-out time and rest time as you see fit, especially if you are switching exercises at all. For example, let's say you're doing a 20-minute workout with one minute of back squats and one minute of lunges, alternated for the 20 minute time frame. This makes it super easy to customize the timer to suit your workout so you're not constantly resetting your timer. What I love most about it is that it saves precious time from the workout itself where you would normally be constantly checking your phone to see where you're at. I don't know about you, but when I'm working out, I check my phone as little as possible so that I can concentrate on the task at hand. This app make it super easy to fit in whatever workout you have planned. 5. Podcast App You didn't actually think I'd make it through this list without listing the podcast app, did you?! I listen to podcasts every single day, whether it's while going for a walk, cooking/cleaning, running errands or driving. It's one of my favourite ways to learn, and there are so many amazing podcasts these days! Listing all of my faves in the episode! I'm of the belief that there's always more to learn and room to grow, and a great podcast is such an awesome place to start, and the best part is that you can be listening while you're doing other things. If you don't have an iPhone or access to iTunes, some of the options can include Google Play, Spotifyand Stitcher, AND the Room to Grow podcast is available on all of them! Simply open the app and search "Room to Grow" under podcasts, or click on the links I attached for you ;). Now I want to hear from YOU! Show Notes Find your copy of Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert here! Watch I Am The Greatest speech here! Holding Space: Basically you put down the wall, take down the guard, and listen. That’s it. Listening is one of the hardest things to learn. We’re constantly waiting to get in the next word; to have the last word; we’re thinking about what we’re going to say WHILE the other person is talking. So holding space and non-violent communication is allowing the person you’re talking with to have the room, to speak freely and know that they’re being listened to. As the person holding space your perspective might be challenged. So how can you respond, instead of react? How can you stay grounded in my truth, in what you believe in, and come from a place of understanding? Shift Your Perspective: How can you be open in the way you look at life, a situation or conversation? When we shift the way we think, it doesn't mean we give up what we believe in. Instead we allow some new light to be shed on our pre-existing ideas. Stand In Your Truth: Communicating from a place of honesty and upholding your core values. How can you share your experience while staying both grounded and receptive? You’re not trying to prove your truth, you’re just communicating from that place. Maybe this new perspective enhances your truth and makes it stronger, or it makes more room for other truths. The Driver: I love the idea about being the driver and the passenger. I think it’s something we can all relate to because at one time or another, most of us have been a driver and most of us have been a passenger. As the driver there is a lot of responsibility and attention. Being the driver of a conversation, situation or stance in life doesn't mean being aggressive, controlling or dominating. It means there is an opportunity to come from a place of inspiration, empowerment and motivation. The Passenger: You can't control what you can't control. Being the passenger of a conversation, situation or place in life, doesn't mean being passive or submissive. Instead you come from a place of understanding, trust, attention and compassion while staying grounded in what you believe in. We're All On Our Way Home: What does 'On Our Way Home' mean? It means we're all trying to reach that place in our lives that feels whole, balanced, centered, honest and true. It's the place where we feel most aligned, full of joy, and like ourselves.

BACKGROUND At approximately 6:00 p.m. on 5 December 1945, an HF/DF signal fix was obtained for Flight 19, placing its location somewhere within a 100-mile radius off the east coast of Florida, but that would be the last trace of the squadron's existence. It wouldn't be the last tragedy of this story. Around 7:27 p.m., two Martin Mariner rescue planes were launched from NAS Banana River, FL to conduct a search. Three minutes later, one of the planes, PBM-5 "Squadron Training No. 49" would send its "out report" over the radio, but it too would never be heard from again. About 20 minutes later, a tanker cruising in the area, the SS Gaines Mills would report seeing an apparent explosion, with flames leaping 100 feet high and lasting for 10 minutes in the vicinity of where PBM-5 should have been. The ship would search for survivors or floating wreckage but would find only a pool of oil and it is believed all 13 crew members aboard PBM-5 perished in that explosion. At least with PBM-5, there is a likely explanation of their fate but with Flight 19, to this day there is none to be had. The lingering question may sound simplistic, but it can be put before every speculative answer ranging from the commonplace to the paranormal -- "Where did they go?" BACKGROUND The fate of a US Naval training flight, designated as “Flight 19” remains one of the American military’s most enduring mysteries, but also one of the signature stories from the legendary region known as “The Bermuda Triangle.” On December 5, 1945, a squadron of five Grumman TBM Avenger torpedo bombers departed Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale, Florida at 2:10 p.m. on what should have been a routine overwater navigation training exercise. After successfully completing their practice bombing runs and some course change maneuvers, the formation radioed that they were not sure of their location or heading. Several hours later it was clear that the squadron was lost and their situation was dire. Flight instructor Lt. Charles Taylor, USN would make his last transmission around this time and it would be the last he and his 13 airmen would ever be heard from again. A rescue operation was launched, but it too would suffer a terrible tragedy. Was this merely a series of unfortunate but explainable errors and Flight 19 simply fell victim to the natural danger of the sea, or would they be claimed by the purported treachery of the Bermuda Triangle? It’s the inaugural episode! In this wondrous celebration of amateurish podcasting, hosts Marcel and Matt punt way too many things, discuss the Saison beer style, have some beer (more than a few, actually), and talk about what to drink while watching Blade Runner. They also complain about not having a name for the podcast, but through the magic of time travel, the name is now confirmed, dear listener! They review Citizen’s Pacifist Winter Porter and Marcel goes on a bit of a rant about why BJCP hall monitors deserve to be imprisoned. It's a Holiday Edition of Beats & Eats. On this Christmas Eve, Nick Gelso travels to Brookline for a Holiday tour of The Washington Square Tavern. This is a "return visit" of sorts, as Gelso visited with The Tavern back in November, talking with BNE2, Chef Barret about his POPUP dinner. The POPUP was a resounding success and today, we speak with the Tavern's Executive Chef Kevin Des Chenes. In addition to his work at this great Gastro Eatery, Chef Kevin has been making waves all over the Celebrity Chef circuit with his appearances on, Food Network's Chef Wanted with Anne Burrell and The Celebrity Stage at The Atlantic City Food & Wine Festival. Surrounding all of Kevin's recent success, is his great passion and devotion to charity. It's always been quite impactful to me that the culinary community always makes a priority to give back to those who are suffering or less fortunate. As you'll hear in today's episode of Beats and Eats, Kevin's current charity is one that is very close to mine and Ty's heart, Michelle's Place for Breast Cancer Research and Awareness. Our association coincides with Chef Kevin's via Gillian Larson, and her Reality Rally Charity weekend in Temecula, California. Chef Kev explains why charity is so important to him and why he's working so hard to raise funds for Reality Rally/Michelle's Place. Additionally, we speak about the Holiday Season at Washington Square Tavern in Brookline. Chef Kevin talks about the great things happening at the Tavern on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and, of course, New Years Eve. Lastly, we spend a portion of time discussing the restaurant industry, the US Foods - Sysco merger, and how it will impact the independent operators, and general best practices in the BOH of a well-established, bustling Gastro Tavern in Boston.
